Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
Amazing is that less than 4 miles away is Center city Philadelphia with beautiful upscale buildings, skyscrapers, museums, shopping, and fantastic restaurants.... As different as day is to night to this area.

Man, it must be terrifyingly to think your brother might be there. You can never give up hope on someone you love. If he was in prison that would be bad but at least you would know where he was at and you could take to him. If only you could find him and move him far away from it all. Rehabs should not cost so much money! The cheapest is around 30k a month! And the most expensive is 400k a month

It breaks my heart every time I see these videos it’s my neighborhood I grew up here and to see what it has become to see a couple of people in this video that when I was younger had a good job nice house and car and to see them on drugs homeless is so sad.It’s so crazy because most of them that are homeless and on drugs just come to Kensington for a few days because it’s so easy to get what they want and they end up getting stuck here for years.I just pray that they find the strength to get help and quit..

Living in Philadelphia myself has been a real nightmare commuting to the downtown district by El train. Commuters have to ride through this neighborhood and it's very dangerous. A commuter is not safe, constantly harassed by these people on the train. A commuter was robbed at gunpoint and shot during the 6am commute. I stopped taking the El train for that reason. I pay double the fare and take the regional rail into Town. Philly is that bad...uh...yeah.

Yeah, I live in the middle of the US and started watching the Philly Captain on you tube during the pandemic. He took us there one day and I kind of went crazy. Just felt so bad about that situation. We have it in our town of 40,000 residents. There was a big article about it in our paper today. So, after the 4th I am going to try to at least help here if I can. But, I have tried to help people and it never works for me. Wow. Its like beating your head on the sidewalk, not from being knocked out on fentanyl or some other hideous substance, but from total frustration. The mayor of Philly should realize the entire country is watching the place where our nation began turn to crap. We are watching......

Plus there are different types of cars Bentleys Roll Royce Ferrari’s there is probably the same type of drug intake but it mainly in the Casinos, Plush Hotels and Mansions behind closed doors. The people are still people, God looks down on them the same. Because it’s richer and the politicians need the endorsement and fawn over the London Kensington rich the garbage is collected and cleaned up regular and the police turn a blind eye to wealthy people whatever they do. I agree with the comment below about not a few miles away is Center City with all it's skyscrapers, high rise apartments, office buildings, government buildings, and all the historical sites - the real estate tax base in Philadelphia has evaporated - so many families have left the city - there are blocks and blocks and blocks of missing houses - dilapidated buildings looking like the back streets of Manila - take a ride on the old Reading line from Fox Chase to downtown - you pass through such poverty - take a ride on the Frankford Elevated line and just watch below - better view even than through this lens. Do the Philippines have the right idea about those addicted to hard drugs?

Been watching for about a year now and it's getting worse. Reminds me of Needle Park in Zurich, but it's the whole city, not just a park. I know McPherson park is also called needle park. But god, how can they let this happen. Hep A,B,C must be rampant from the trash and needles. It's just sad. Looks like a drug dealers paradise,a drug addicts hell. I have a hunch that drugs are manufactured, or rather "tweaked " in some of those abandoned factories. I've researched and found out about the chemical factory only a couple miles away, Baker, that chemical has been found in the heroin in the area. Coincidence or no?🤔
