Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
This is heartbreaking to see what drugs can do to a person. It's like watching a zombie movie.

I used to be a teacher in Fairhill and I used to drive every day through K and A. I am so sorry for these poor souls but who I felt even more sorry for were my students. These were their parents, titis, familia, etc... Lord help them.

If someone mentally ill commits a crime they would go to a treatment facility from a court order, so feed them till they die is ok right and it will keep the drug addiction growing till things get out of hand.

I’ve been through a lot in my 60 years on this planet and thought I’d seen pretty much everything, I’m not easily shocked but this is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.
I was shooting dope in the 1970's in Seattle, it was bad here then, just as it was bad everywhere. Not me, I see worse very single day here in Seattle. Philly might be a much larger city, however the patterns, the persons, the results, and devastation are the same. You can see this in any city. The devastation is everywhere, in many different permutations, and taking many forms. It is truly heartbreaking to see, the face of substance dependence is writ large for all to see, and videos like these should be required viewing for persons whether they like it or not. Perhaps then real, innovative, forward moving treatment models and concepts can address what we se. But honestly, I doubt it because persons who simply do not want to admit this takes place, or persons who choose not to accept this as real, or persons who ridicule the substance dependent person, should be taken to spend real time with the residents of the sidewalks here in Kensington, or any other large city to truly get the message, that this is here, and it is not going anywhere anytime soon...

No way it's only getting worse i live in Ohio and our governor is making our healthcare workers get the vaccine that they don't want we are having health care workers walk off the job because of what our governor is trying to do at the moment we have healthcare workers protesting for their rights our hospitals are going to be standing without workers because people are quitting their jobs and I fear our children are next to be forced to take a vaccine just to be able to attend school no it's getting worse nothing good is coming at least not for along time.

My mind is running through a ton of questions. I wonder how long they stand like that? My back would be hurting like a sob. I don’t understand how they were all basically doing the same hunched over stance. Like why are they not falling down or falling forward? Shit idk why not sit down or lay down? They are so vulnerable being in that state on the streets. I don’t even want to think about the bad things that could and well probably do happen to these people. I would think that once they leave their tent someone else steals it or takes over it? Also the same with their belongings. I saw book bags hanging from a tall fence but on the opposite side of the sidewalk. I think to keep them safe? Mental health issues were so ignored for such a long time that I think this is one of the side effects. It’s heartbreaking.

It’s called “nodding” or “dippin” it is a side effect. The heroin and or fentanyl makes them extremely tired. They are getting off on it. Feeling the high. Dippin is a part of the high.

@Tiger Low all heroin and fentanyl. Nodding out is a side effect. It makes them tired. As they are about to fall, they usually wake up and then it happens all over again.
@Tiger Low These people are a product of a mix of issues - poor healthcare availability, poor aid when you fall on hard times, mental health, focus on criminalisation instead of rehabilitation - drug problems should probably be looked at (at least in part) as a health issue.

3. Don't spend anything. (You don't need that candy bar or soda.)
4. Explore resources. (There are many.)
