Hi Barbara. I'm trying to follow the instructions and I'm confused. It says to cast on 9 st. But row 1 accrual is worked over 11 st. What am I missing?
@@heidicook2395 Hi Heidi. If you are counting 11 sts in the first row then you have a misunderstanding somewhere. My guess is that it’s the kYOk. It only uses one stitch … you knit into the stitch but keep it on the LH needle, YO, and then knit again into the same stitch … it’s a 2 stitch increase. If that guess is wrong please let me know and we’ll figure out where the miscommunication is.

Good morning Barbara, look what popped up when I turned on my computer at work this morning! Somethings are just ment to be. You are so amazing and thank you for making this pattern up, I feel like you did it just for me and it is beautiful. This looks like something I'm willing to try even though it is stepping out of my comfort zone, big time. I'll just repeat your video over and over till in sinks in. Now to pick the yarn from my stash, hum. You litle sticker I'm going to do this before I start my "Lost in TIme". Hope that gives you a big smile. Thank you, thank you and a great big hug.
Haven't given up yet but after two hrs I put it down so Easter projects get ready. Plan to pick it up tomorrow night. I did get through row 3 several times then ripped it out and started over again. Happy Easter.
Well it has been a week of still trying to get this lace version. Last night I though finally I got it but this morning there has to be something I've done wrong since there are times when the stitches at the end of the row don't work out to the 6 I need. So this yarn is looking like it's about thrashed and I am ready to toss the whole thing. Of course the needles I am using are the crappiest you can imagine and I ordered a set of 4.5m last night. I thought you had a gmail email that I might send a picture I took of this *^*&^ and if you have a minute or more you might be able to see what keeps going wrong. Thank you. Still watching this video over & over so it's good there isn't a charge for each time I hit replay, I'd be broke and I also bought the cheat sheet which I really thought was a big help. Still loving your shows. hugs
I'm quite late to this party, but would love to know how to knit as loosely as you do, Barbara. Many of my problems in knitting come because my stitches are so tight. Fighting them can cause them to fly off of the needles! Thanks for another quality video. Am starting this shawl today.
I don't know if any of these suggestions will be relevant but hey, it's the internet LOL. If you aren't using metal needles you might want to try them. Compared to the average knitter, I am actually a fairly tight knitter. I have to use metal needles with pointy tips and when I knit someone else's pattern I tend to have to go up a needle size or two. Changing the needle size might also help you. But a third thing that I have found common among people who complain that their stitches are tight is that they are unintentionally knitting twisted stitches. You might want to check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/OWGHpsYYXEY/v-deo.htmlsi=JGjbDPN6hgS1KgW5 Twisted stitches starts at 17:26
Been looking for and easy shawl with lots of pazzazz and I think I have found it. Summer kitting and a Christmas present for a classy lady. Dark blue with a little silver glitter I think. Her favorite combination and fancy enough to wear formal or casual.
Hey, just wanted tolet you know that I cast on a shawl with these instructions in a beautiful pink color from Mad Tosh and I reallyy didn't ccnnect the two until I was knitting it. The colorway is "Barbara Deserved Better" lol A really pretty pink. Using the Work Sock base which is 400 yards and to me looks like a DK. I will say its knitting up fast!
My hand is healed enough to do this very uncomplicated shawl. Thanks Barbara...at least I will try haha. When you design enough of these easy peasy patterns then maybe a soft cover book with all of them would be handy.I like something I can hold in my hands even though I purchase the patterns .
That is an interesting idea, I'm not sure how I would go about that. Publishing is such a complex thing and getting something printed hard-copy is crazy expensive. But I'll never say never.
What gave me the idea was that I have a few Leisure Arts booklets that are 11x8 and contains 40 pages which also includes the copyright and publishing information pages. I love working with that size. Well thanks for answering my question!
I think there are some services that one you have the layout done, they will take care of the printing/mailing on a print-on-demand basis. I think amazon has one and I've seen some others. www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-4-online-selfpublishers-book-write/
Hi Barbara. Thank you so much for this video. You’ve made it so easy to understand except for the ladder-like row at the neck edge for which I don’t see a pattern. Am I missing something?
Thank you very much for the beautiful, tasteful design! I will make it inserting stripes of stokinette. If I may ask, is there a way to make the upper part stretchier, other than knit the first 2 sts elongated? Thanks in advance
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thank you!! It's just that it doesn't lay flat, it takes a concave shape, which is not the case in your sample, so it must be my clumsy knitting.
Hey Barbara, love this pattern, but if I hadn't watched the video would not have known to slip knit or purl wise on the slipped stitches. I did not purchase the pattern just used the one in your description box below video, think you should check your pattern out to see if it was placed in the pattern itself, if not that would make a big difference in the results, I would think. Just letting you know. Thank you for the pattern and thank you for sharing and as always love, laughter and happy crafting.
In all of my patterns I define and provide instructions for any abbreviation that I use. While it is standard to assume that a stitch is slipped purlwise unless instructed otherwise, I include this clarification in the definition of the abbreviation.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit oh ok thank you for straightening me out lol, would like to thank you again for the lovely shawl pattern, and your time in making it.
i am being brave. i have only worked on a garter stitch cowl so far, this i am casting on in fingering weight with 3mm needles! i had a merino, nylon, cashmere blend that I've been waiting to find the perfect wearable for.
I hope you have fun knitting this. If you run into any questions please do not hesitate to ask. My FB group is where you will get the fastest answers, if not from me then from other members.
I love ❤️ this simple lace crescent shawl. I have a question about “slip 1 with yarn in front. “ What does that stitch do to the shawl? I’m having challenges understanding that technique.
It simply produces a pretty edge. If you don't like working the slip stitch you can simply substitute a knit stitch and have a perfectly lovely garter edge.
Question about your comment regarding use of stockinette with lace as edge or with alternating rows of stockinette and lace: how do you do the increases without doing the lace pattern to make the shawl grow ? Do you just keep the 4 increases within the first six and last six stitches and do the rest in stockinette ? Do you begin the lace two row pattern on a right side row wherever you want ?
The increases are the edge, the lace does not make it grow at all. The increases and decreases in the lace section cancel each other out. So the part that comes after the * and then says repeat from *, at that point you simply knit instead of doing what is in the repeated section. Yes, you can begin the lace pattern on any right side row you want.
You will need to swatch to figure out what size needle you like with your yarn. I have knit fingering weight shawls with 4s, 5s, and 6s. It all depends on the yarn and what you are going for.
I'm going to try this, being a beginner I get confused with the yarn overs, Barbara do you have to do the yarn over to add a stitch, or can a stitch be added a different way?
Hi Barb what size of needle do you used? My friend likes blue-green color , since I can’t find the color I’m using of 2 strain of super fine cashmere one royal blue and emerald green together I also would like to embellish with Miyuki size 6 seed beads with lots of bling. My question is May I use a size 7 needle . I have trouble seeing with my black wooden Cir needle The only white bamboo needle I have comes in 7 . I gather you used Knit Pro needle right? Thanks I ❤❤❤ to watch you so much fun I never fail to laugh out loud which is against my character.😊
I typically use a 5 or a 6 for fingering weight shawls. You can use whatever size you like as long as it produces a fabric you like. I use all sorts of needles.
Hello Barbara. I think that you are a very nice and fun person to be around. I really appreciate this lace shawl, and I really want to make it. It's easy to follow; however, I'm having a small problem with the one where you end up with 6 stitches. I know how to do that particular row, where it's the 6-row repeat, yet at the last of where you have 6 stitches, I'm ending up with 5. What am I doing wrong?
Patrice Cooper I’d love to help you but I’m confused as to the question you are asking. Is it a different video/pattern. For this video/pattern the initial cast on is 9 and it’s just a 2 row repeat. So I’m not sure what you are referring to. If you could clarify I can try to help.
Any help on how to check the gauge on a lace swatch? I'm knitting the Midsummer Rose shawl and have no idea how to count my stitches for gauge. I need 20 stitches and 26 rows to equal 4 inches using size 4 needles. I'm new to lace, by the way.
So the best way to swatch in lace is to cast on a set number of multiples of the lace pattern. Once you've blocked it you know how many stitches are in a motif and you measure the number of motifs to determine stitches per inch. But make sure that the gauge is provided in the lace pattern. A lot of patterns simple provide stockinette gauge because people don't like to swatch in pattern.
There is a link to the FB group in the description below the video. The description has so many useful links on all of my videos. That said, here's a direct link: facebook.com/groups/WatchBarbaraKnit
I did this shawl and I’m about to bind off. I’m on the right side. Do u think it would be ok to do a row of garter/knit to stabilize, then do this bind off on the wrong side?
hello. I enjoyed your video. I just want to clarify something. Is it the same start with 9 cast ons no matter how big you want the crescent shawl to be?
Oncycle Yes. For this pattern the cast-on needs to be 9. It is possible to start with other CO numbers, but it is dependent on what you are doing in the body of the shawl.
You can use whatever cast on you like. Oddly, Long Tail is one of the stretchier cast ons. If yours is tight you might want to look into how you are doing it.
Well, the answer to that is very dependent on how many you want to add LOL. I would probably place them on the return row on the stitch coming out of the decrease from the RS row.
The only advice is to make sure that you aren't trying to do anything else (like talk or watch TV) and to check your stitch count at the end of each row until you get the hang of the pattern.
When you want to make slipped edges on the sides why or how do you know which row you can slip stitches on each end and why can the other row be knitted on each end. How does that work please? Or how can you tell which row you need to do the slopped stitches on? Thank you very much.
There are any number of ways to do slipped stitch edges - honestly, I would recommend that you experiment on a swatch and see what you personally like!
Hi Barbara, I would like to try knitting this crescent shawl. After I make my swatch and know what size needles I want, I’ll purchase circular needles. What length cord would you suggest I get to make sure I have enough room on them? Thank you!
The longest one you can find/afford! You can always use longer cords to magic loop smaller circumferences but you cannot stretch a cord to make it longer. For crescent shaped shawls, the final rows get pretty long and you need a cord in at least the 40 inch range.
If you would like a PDF cheat sheet for this pattern one is available on Ravelry here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/two-row-lace-crescent

De rien! Merci d'avoir regardé.
I like this design is there a way to make a crochet version ?
I don’t design in crochet so I’m afraid I can’t give you a good answer.
Awesome, learn alot thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks....that was helpful! Just what I was looking for!
Wonderful! Have fun with it!
Beauty! Class
Thank you!
So beautiful. Do you have the directions for crochet?
Thank you! I am afraid I do not crochet.
WatchBarbaraKnit Thanks so much for replying! That makes sense now. I’ll keep trying now that I know what it’s for. It’s such a lovely stitch/pattern!
Lovely. Thank you for designing it and for sharing it.
It was my pleasure!
Still struggling with this, got Covid shot and arm too sore to knit, so now I have to start over....I will prevail! Lol
You can do it!
That’s so pretty ! Can I ask what size needles you would use for finger weight yarn ? Thanks so much.
You will need to swatch to figure out what size needle you like with your yarn. I have knit fingering weight shawls with 4s, 5s, and 6s. It all depends on the yarn and what you are going for.
Me likey! I have some yarn I want to combine with your pattern! Thank you Barbara! Off to Ravelry ;)
I can't wait to see what you knit up.
Just like your pattern, a crescent shaped shawl in pima cotton
I'm going to try this, being a beginner I get confused with the yarn overs, Barbara do you have to do the yarn over to add a stitch, or can a stitch be added a different way?
I see that you found the Yarn Over video! You've got this.
this is completely awesome...thank you so much!
You are more than welcome! What color are you going to knit it in?
Usually the pattern says what pattern to knit to check your gauge. Is that what u are asking?
So the best way to swatch in lace is to cast on a set number of multiples of the lace pattern. Once you've blocked it you know how many stitches are in a motif and you measure the number of motifs to determine stitches per inch. But make sure that the gauge is provided in the lace pattern. A lot of patterns simple provide stockinette gauge because people don't like to swatch in pattern.
I love your voice anh your feeling face. And your introduction.
Thank you so much!
how can I find you on FaceBook?
There is a link to the FB group in the description below the video. The description has so many useful links on all of my videos. That said, here's a direct link: facebook.com/groups/WatchBarbaraKnit
Es una puntada muy bonita, no hablo su idioma, pero lo he entendido, gracias por compartirlo, un saludo desde la provincia de Alicante
Gracias!
I did this shawl and I’m about to bind off. I’m on the right side. Do u think it would be ok to do a row of garter/knit to stabilize, then do this bind off on the wrong side?
I want to use the stretchy bindoff u recommend in your written pattern, but on the wrong side (after doing one row of knit/garter on the right side.)
Sounds like a perfect plan!
hello. I enjoyed your video. I just want to clarify something. Is it the same start with 9 cast ons no matter how big you want the crescent shawl to be?
Yes, it will grow as you knit it.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit thank you. I'm doing this pattern now. Almost to the end.
I really needed this thank you.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Gracias! Hermoso y muy fácil 💕
De nada! Gracias.
Really nice! Thank you.
My pleasure!
Did you start off the Sugar Plum mini shawl with 9 stitches?
Is it always 9 stitches cast on beginning? Thanks 🙏🌷
Oncycle Yes. For this pattern the cast-on needs to be 9. It is possible to start with other CO numbers, but it is dependent on what you are doing in the body of the shawl.
Do you think it is okay to use stretchy cast on? Because my Long tail cast on are always so tied ,
You can use whatever cast on you like. Oddly, Long Tail is one of the stretchier cast ons. If yours is tight you might want to look into how you are doing it.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thanks for your advice,
This pattern was just what I was looking for! I would like to add beads into it, where would be an appropriate point to add them?
Well, the answer to that is very dependent on how many you want to add LOL. I would probably place them on the return row on the stitch coming out of the decrease from the RS row.
WatchBarbaraKnit thx, I will give that a try 😀
Barbara please design another lacy crescent shawl I have tried it 9 times over and over it just doesn’t end semitrically any tips? Thanks😘🌷.
Am I the only one who sees a wonderful shawl for the American Girl dolls (or knock offs) in that swatch?
It would be great for dolls!
Hi Barbara, I would like to try knitting this crescent shawl. After I make my swatch and know what size needles I want, I’ll purchase circular needles. What length cord would you suggest I get to make sure I have enough room on them? Thank you!
The longest one you can find/afford! You can always use longer cords to
magic loop smaller circumferences but you cannot stretch a cord to make
it longer. For crescent shaped shawls, the final rows get pretty long
and you need a cord in at least the 40 inch range.
