I finished my shawl. I made it with three skeins of Lion Brand Homespun and it turned out thick, warm, and very pretty. Thanks again for this easy pattern.
Thank you, Barbara, for helping this knitting beginner! I’m coming from Crochet. So far, I’ve only knit a couple of dishcloths…. I might be able to attempt this shawl/scarf. I have some lovely yarn and I’m excited to try! 🧶🌻 Carola on Morro Bay 🐳
I've missed you!😊 I've been taking a you tube break. Thank you for this super easy crescent shaped shawl. As usual your verbal description make it so easy to work up!😊 I have a friend I want to make a prayer shawl for and this will be perfect! I always learn so much from you. 😊💗 Thanks Barbara!❣
I made a scarf out of DK yarn which is thinner than any yarn I’ve used before. The shawl is a lace shawl. I’m used to weaving in ends when making thick sweaters as there’s a lot of places to hide the ends! How would you weave in ends on a lace shawl! That shawl you demonstrated today was nice and easy for new knitters! Thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much for this wonderful pattern. You did make it extremely clear and easy to follow. I cast on and began knitting along with you, and I'm looking forward to hours of contented knitting. I love your style!
Hi Barbara, love your tutorials!! I would like to do this shawl without the holes of the yarn overs. Which increase would you recommend to replace the yo's? Would it be the same for both or would the beginning yo be different than the ending? Thank you in advance ❤
The easiest way to get rid of the holes would be to knit all of the yarn overs through the back loop when you come to them. So essentially it would change the row to k2, YO, k1tbl, knit to last 3 sts, k1tbl, YO, k1, s1-wyif. That way you get the ease of increasing with a YO without the holes. Another way to do it would be to replace the YO increase with an increase that doesn't leave a hole, like make 1. For this I would do m1R on the leading edge and m1L at the end of the row.
Hi Barbara Have you knitted the Peach color Shawl on the cover of the magazine on your top shelve behind you it is gorgeous.I just love love your tutorial so clear o understand and so much fun. Thanks a lot.
Since this video is aimed at beginners I chose a super easy cast-on. It is called the cable cast on and lets you avoid messing about with the long tail. If you are more comfortable with the long tail totally use that one.
Awesome! Couldn’t be easier. Can’t wait to try it. I was gifted a skein of Lion Brand Summer Nights that I didn’t know what to do with. Is that enough for this shawl?
I looked it up and that is 437 yards of fingering weight yarn so it would make a small-ish shawl just fine. It is an acrylic yarn so if you want to block it you would have to steam heat block.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thank you for your help. One more question: can I combine the Summer Nights (acrylic) with the same weight Red Heart Croquette (92% cotton 5% polyester). I have it in the same colorway. Thank you for again.
I like shawls that sit on your shoulders and stay there. I have a couple shawls that are that way and I’m not really sure what makes them stay there. I use fingering mostly, but my fav one that sits on my shoulders is made of alpaca/cotton DK knit in a lace pattern. I added an extra 4” bcos I had the yarn, and the tails still don’t get too long, as I hate long tails.
LOL, long tails are my favorite so most of my patterns have them. To each their own! I think I replied to you on a different video with my thoughts on staying on the shoulder.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit I should clarify that I don’t like short tails, either, just mid sized tails. Ha. If they are down to your knees, then they stretch out the shawl. Thanks for the comment.
Hi! Great instructions! I am a beginner and I would like to make a shawl like that for my daughter but, we don’t like garter stitch. Can I make this in stockinette? With a garter stitch border so it doesn’t curl up?
I want to knit this with an acrylic yarn, so I'll need to steam block the finished product. Is your padding shown at 18:04 steam proof? Are they the foam blocks that you use for exercise or are they special blocks?
The ones you see in the video are specifically made for knitting, but I also use bigger ones that were intended to be play floor in a child's space. I've never had a problem but if you are concerned you could put towels over the mats to protect them.
I have tons of yarn many are from dyer have no label. How can I identify what weight is it? Initials I though I can count the statin stren but I was wrong . Please help. Thanks 😅
Your best bet would be to use a Wraps per Inch (WPI) tool to determine mystery yarn weight. I haven't made a video on that yet but now I think I should.
I'm afraid it's not as easy as that. A YO is an increase so for every increase you need a decrease or it will change the stitch count. Most of the time an eyelet row is yo, k2tog repeated across.
When my mom taught me to knit when I was six (decades ago, LOL) I learned to use my thumb to cast on. Essentially knitting each stitch off of your thumb instead of asecond needle. I still use this c/o because it seems less fiddly than the c/o you demonstrated. Just my personal preference. Do you ever c/o with your thumb? BTW the crescent shawl is my go to, I like to add some texture or lacy stitches in the mix. Enjoy your channel
The thumb cast on definitely works, but I do not find it my best choice for many situations. It isn't a particularly stable cast on and it is a challenge to properly manage the tension on it. But if it's what you like and is your go to then more power to you!
Many thanks for showing that both Continental and English versions can be done in the same project. With one of my projects, I was knitting in English and during the project switched to Continental. In the following row, the stitches were all turned around. For each stitch on the left needle, I had to remove from needle, turn the stitch and replace it on the needle and then knit the new stitch. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.
So there are two probable culprits for that. One, you are knitting through the wrong leg of the stitch (the back leg instead of the front). If not that then you are most likely wrapping your yarn around your needle backwards. You always want to wrap your yarn counterclockwise around the needle, from left to right.

Morning, thank you for the video. Much more comfortable with written patterns. What is the name of this pattern. Trying to find on your website. Thank you
Wish I knew the secret to make a crescent shawl that was long enough in the back(not a shawlette), but without tails that hang to my knees! So, is it the way you increase the edges? Would short rows give it some depth without adding to the length, but then you can’t to stripes. I thought u may have done a video on this before.
Yes, short rows would be the answer to achieve a deep crescent but you are also right that it would cause problems with stripes unless you also got into intarsia. Unfortunately I have very little experience with short rows (I just don't like doing them) so I can't be of further assistance. You might want to look at the Color Affection shawl to see how that designer used short rows and stripes in a crescent shape.
What size of needle do you use for fingering yarn? When I look at your Lacey Crescentt it looks like a larger needle. My lacey tend to be smaller open holes I often use a 4mm or 3mm .Thanks
To get the drape I like for a shawl I typically use a US size 5 or 6 with fingering weight yarn. But it depends entirely on your tension. Just do some swatches until you find a fabric you like. And remember that the drape will change if/when you block the fabric.
Thank you so much for this tutorial/pattern. I am attending the Renaissance Festival this weekend, and am dressing in a Steam Punk costume for a change of pace, and wanted something simple to knit up that I could use as part of a Victorian look and this will work wonderfully! Also, out of curiosity, what brand are the needles you use? Thanks!
I bet your costume looked great! I use Knitter's Pride Zings for most of my tutorial videos because the colors on the tips help provide contrast. Also, I just like them LOL.
Wondering if anyone knows whether adding eyelet rows would take more or less yarn than stockinette or garter. By eyelet I mean, WS: K RS: “Ktog, yo “. Repeat WS: K. I have limited yardage and wanted to design my own shawl.
