Coronavirus: Preparing to Sail Away from Civilization | S04E21

- Panama is starting to lock down and close non-essential businesses due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the Panama Canal has been closed to recreational yachts, leaving us with no option but to postpone our Pacific Crossing until 2021.
So, we decide to wait out the lockdowns and closures by doing some offgrid cruising in Bocas Del Toro, but before casting the lines, we need to re-provision and get Atticus ready to sail again. While doing routine engine maintenance, we encounter a problem…

I sure do admire a guy that can just dig in to almost any situation and come out on top. Great work Jordan. You do it well, very well ! ! ! He's lucky to have you backing him up every time Desiree. So much trust.
Desree, you're looking gorgeous there with your hair down & a simple white shirt.
Jordan, it's incredible how far you've come and how confident you seem with boat work now. Keep up the great work.
I like her with glasses
Instablaster...
Love seeing all the boat projects. We too have done it all ourselves. We have learned so much.
Found you channel this morning. Great videos, trying to watch from the beginning but just watched this episode now! I’m in my 35 day of COVID-19. I did not have to go to the hospital yet but I also got pneumonia. I want you to know that videos like yours are where I get my daily adventures and the hope to carry on. Thank you for sharing. Stay Safe, stay isolated. God bless, love the editing and the attention to doing things right. 🙏😊❤️
Jordan and Desirae, you two are beautiful and healthy for each other.
Count your blessings that found each other and clicked!
Two lovely people who have given me and my daughter therapeutic viewing whilst in this lock down. Greetings from overcast grey day in the UK Lancashire
glad to hear we've brought some fun into your home! thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing your cleaning of the heat exchanger. I’m contemplating to get into sailing and I enjoy watching guys like you who take maintenance serious.
Brings back so many memories. Enjoy your time in Central America. We rushed through it because 12 years ago...we thought we only had money for 3-4 years...and couldn’t wait to get to the Pacific. Enjoy your time there...don’t rush. Before you know it, you will be getting the boat ready to go somewhere cold, figuring out how to heat the boat! Love that you guys have already figured out that you should relax and go slowly. You are already living the life...you don’t need to cross another ocean to do that! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
great point! thanks for the advice!!
I'm so pleased that you have Atticus all together so you have somewhere to be and that you have been able to provision.
Glad u guys are ok. Stay healthy. We love ya
When I worked with my father who was a master mechanic. When we needed to shape a gasket but did not have the old one to use as a mask. He would lay the gasket material over where the gasket would go and "gently" tap with a ball pean hammer. This would easily cut out the shape you needed in the exact shape you need. You may have to trim if the cuts did not go all the way through, but that is simple enough.
You can do it that way, but a better way is to rub chalk, or Prussian blue on the gasket surface and then press it onto the gasket material.
This method will not damage the part the gasket is for. Tapping a gasket can damage parts especially if the part is bronze or aluminium.
Yes. It's called "peening a gasket". Done it many times, but probably not enough room in the engine compartment to do it.
I can't begin to count how many gaskets I've "peened." Yes, you do have to be a bit careful which the word "tapping" is used. If the part you're tapping against is fragile enough to break using this method, it probably needed to be replaced anyway.
Learned that from my father also, works great!
God Bless you guys as you persevere through this crazy time. We will continue to think of you and if I may, pray for your continued safety, encouragement and provision. Big love from Vashon Island, Washington USA.
thanks for your kind thoughts!!
Love you guys and how your not disappointed about going across the pacific but more ya another adventure !! Love it and stay safe
Loved Desiree’s shopping for toilet paper.😂 Great job on the engine Jordan!! Stay Safe out there!!
Bill Schey Toilet Paper on a store shelf? I haven’t seen that for a month!
Sending you both great vibes and prayers!!! Stay safe and healthy!!!
Too bad you have to delay the Pacific crossing a year, but hey one of the benefits of being a "cruiser" is you can set your own schedule. Stay safe guys! Fair winds and following seas Atticus!!
When your back I the states buying clamps filters and such always buy 2 of everything.
Well played! Congrats on having put yourselves into a situation that lets you get the best of this situation. 👍
What an incredible young man this bloke is doing all this and his wife knows what she is doing too. God bless and safe travels.
It’s going to be another Project Atticus Marathon again today!!💜
So sorry your plans have had to change, it will all work out and you will have a great voyage. Love your videos, look forward to seeing more when you can.
Your videos are a welcome break from TV! Always look forward to Thursdays!
You guys are real, no bs, fun, not depending on sex to push views. I really enjoy it
thanks for your kind words, Brett!
Hey guys! Ya'll popped into my mind when this all started and I am glad to hear that you guys are good. Stinks about delaying your crossing but now you have another adventure to explore living off grid. Great video and I have been re-watching all your videos from the beginning while I am at work doing absolutely nothing! 😜 Stay safe!
Thanks for another great video keep up the good work stay safe! Fair winds!
Great video. I was beginning to miss you guys. Stay safe and corona free. It’s wonderful seeing the professionalism and determination you guys are displaying while fulfilling your dreams. Adios till next time. 😊
A fun and good learning video episode as usual Buds ! It is great to see that the both of you are doing well. Thanks
Simply amazing how much work you guys put into each day and produce these beautifully addictive vids for me. Stay Safe.
good luck you two. safe sailing and keep us up to date.
PS there is more in the shops there than we have in our local town. The shelves where stripped bear last week. people where going shopping every day paying a weeks food each time. As one shop worker told me, they forget we have the card payment and know they've been in here everyday. they think we will not notice.
Stay corona free guys , much love . Thanks for sharing with us stuck at home and furloughed/bored people.
Good luck stay well , looking forward to seeing your next video
I really enjoy your videos, I appreciate your honesty and how frank you are with how you feel about sailing life. Thank you for sharing, I really look forward to your videos, and you’re one of my favorite UA-cam channels!
🤗😊 thanks Colby!! we're so glad our videos speak to you!! thanks for watching!
A great method to help clean a heat exchanger is to soak it much like you have done, also see if you can find a brass or bronze brush to clean the tubes. A great product to use is sold in gun stores to clean rifle bores. The brass cleaning assembly’s for gun cleaning comes with long extensions to get deep into the tubes.
Just found your channel and enjoying the videos! Beautiful scenery and be safe out there! ❤
The best thing we all can do is just hunker down and just stay put where ever we are!!!!!
You inspire me , keep going your very good at what you do. I enjoy watching and picking up tips.
Nice show today -- thanks for giving us a break from quarantine.
Just started last Friday! I enjoy it very much!
Stay safe! I enjoy watching the videos.
Best of luck guys, really enjoying your videos. We're currently locked. down away from the boat at the moment, but it could be worse. One thing this Corona virus has done for us is to make us think about. upping the power on our boat, fitting an additional freezer and a water maker so that if we ever end up in this kind of crazy scenario again, like you're planning to, we can also just cast off and live at. anchor.
Stay safe and keep up the god work guys..
Another great video - stay safe guys.
Very nice. Stay safe, healthy and happy. Great video. Good music and quality work with attention to detail. Thanks for sharing.
You two are great, stay safe and healthy out there! We are stuck in the boatyard during this whole mess :(
Wow what a story incredible
Good job with all the prep work. It will pay off.
Thanks god you've checked the air filter!!! I hope you've got the piece to replace, stay safe!!
I like you guy's channel. Seems like the real deal. Not just a youtube front.
And he sings too. Umm it’s on the road again Captain 😂😂🙏🏼 God Bless you guys to keep both of you safe.
Since the canal is closed now I guess you guys got to take the long way.... Cape Horn!!! Here we come! Lol.
Great video and all the best and stay safe!
Well done guys, really nice episode 👍
WOW! The Coast Guard here in America just intercepted a ship with 4 tons of cocaine on board and hidden inside the cocaine were 2,000 rolls of toilet paper! Who knew??
Good job guys ... Be safe.
Great video buds! Jordan, not only entertaining content but I learn new vocab which is a bonus :) ...Galvanic corrosion. hope you all are safe and healthy!
😁! thanks for watching!
Love you guys!
Love you guys
Thanks for the great Video. I’m social distancing on my sailboat in Miami,Fl. Nothing going on but the rent of the mooring.
Enjoy watching your videos.
You two please be careful,be safe 🙏🙏👍
You guys rock big time
Loved the piss take of the toilet paper raid, reminds me of the idiots panic buying here in Australia. Been following you guys for ages, and I love how your story is told, executed and continues to evolve. Great work guys. Nick, Melbourne, Australia.
You guys are so real, down to earth, likeable, and enjoyable to watch. Stay healthy & don't be affraid to make a homemade airfilter (it doesn't need a high temp rating). GL!
😊⛵😁
Great video guys!!! Greetings from lockdowned Greece!!!
That's a very good plan get away from ever one till this pass by !! Wish I could move my house like that . Be safe thank you for sharing !!!
That’s d life ,best of luck for your sailing, keep it up 👍love frm India 🇮🇳.
Heh Buds! Great to see you two... 😁❤️
And just like that, a spare air filter will now be on the spreadsheet and stored in a dark corner of Atticus. Great video as always! I hope things go smoothly for the next month or so.
TIm, I see you've been following Atticus a long time - like me. Now for a short quiz - where is Atticus's home port? I think Desiree and Jordan have an outstanding port name to go along with the boat's name! :¬) Webhead USA
That was fun with the toilet paper ;) You are getting ready to sail the Pacific...and we are putting on a wood stove to get ready for our next destinations and stay warm on the boat! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Great vid as usual. Good luck getting "off-grid"!
Deseree's TP clearing frenzy scene was fantastic! Thanks for the humor. Also, I wanted to second other's comments on Deseree's white shirt hair down look: very classy!
Watching locked into an island on the Andaman sea. We live here and were caught here at our jobs when we were about to head to our new destination. We are not sailing but it is great to watch you. Taking a swim instead of fighting was a good thing to see for all relationships. I have ruined many a relationship due to ripping the ones we love apart from us. I have learned a huge lesson after this with my new wife. We live largely in peace and she has taught me the value of cooking great food. I have grown up a lot because of carrying my own water and being ecological for the ocean. We collect plastics on the beaches in normal times. All the beaches have been closed for weeks. The turtles have returned to some beaches. The incredible beauty of your area reminds me of this area. Keep safe and sound.
Love your videos keep it up stay safe
Safe travels and good health.
Super experience sir
I think my car has been good prep for having an inboard. I've learned to expect anything and nothing. LOL
Using the manifold as a template and a small ball peen hammer as a cutter- you can hold the gaske to the manifold and cookie cut out the perferct gasket- Love you guys
Stay Safe Jordan & Desiree, Love Y'all..

FEMA is in charge now and last I heard it is a 10 year plan. Sorry, you guys. Really enjoy watching you both. Makes me feel young again. Keep well. Stay happy and keep moving.
nice guys - good job - be safe ++ cheers, from Colorado
watching everyone brush shoulders in the shops is giving me shivers right now
We are the same here in the USA , like a ghost town. And we live in a small town in PA. Stay safe and healthy.
Man that sucks yall cant make the Pacific this year, but it is a blessing in disguise. Hope the best for yall!
Hey Jordan, hope that gasket you made holds up,not sure that gasket material will stand up on the exhaust manifold with that dry riser.hope it will👍Glad to see you’re back in the water and sailing soon.enjoyed the grocery store run too😃
You Guys are so young 😁 2021 will be here before ya know it! 🍻
Nice to be handy with the engine. The covid 19 is here for awhile for sure
You guys stay safe.
Until our adventures cross, fair winds and full sails.
Jack and Billie
Love the tech episodes, and the food action. Y'all could run a huge charter boat with that knowledge. Hope all is well....Don't Panic
Here in the Netherlands most ports are closed. My friend also choose to live out at anker, but when his diesel stove broke he wasn't even allowed to dock for an hour. Really strange for the Netherlands. All things forbidden can be negotiated normally :-) Lucky he managed to fix it by him self, night times are still frosty. I am staying put in my home port.
Glad to see an upbeat mindset. Can I suggest a preventive maintenance schedule and spare parts list is in order. Thank you
I hope you guys put in enough supplies for 2 months, just in case the ports take longer to open back up. Once you leave port, they might not let you back in again. Things keep changing from day to day. Be careful out there.
It might be handy for making your next gasket to keep a very short piece of tubing you can sand sharp on one end the right size for the holes so you can punch the holes out. Little safer. Then if you have an emergency you can make a gasket quick. You can even keep a template around since it wouldn't be that big. Put it in a ziplock bag with the punch.
Bummer no crossing the Pacific. Well new adventure. 👍
Great job with the vinegar I did my oil cooler a few weeks ago with Coca Cola its about the same size but I will try the bag and vinegar trick next year.
Wish I where there, yo guys are blessed
That gasket paper is great stuff, very common composition, use it hot and cold wet and dry oil or water. As soon as it landed on the counter I was going Yessss.
I find when I need to make a gasket for a general maintenance situation it is convenient make two or three. And if the original gasket is mangled lay the gasket sheet on the engine side and whack it with a rubber mallet to impression the outlines.
That’s great, as long as you can find everything when you need it!! No 2 metre roll over there! We have to stay 2m from other shoppers. Also we’re only allowed 3 of anything. We have no flour and not much bread in our shops.s
Good idea with the chain. You could also flip the chain end to end and maybe get a bit more time out of your chain.
I love the fact that i am watching an episode that is happening now not say a month ago great work and i love keeping up to date with your life on the boat. If I could find a mechanical captian i would love to be a second mate, but im stuck in a lovely bungalow paying high taxes with no salt water and grey winters. I thinking of making some changes soon.
Be careful guys. Love your channel very nice people that actually are authentic.
🤗 thank you!!
A good tip with your chain, swap the ends of the chain around, say every 6m to a year, that way you will have equal ware on the parts of the chain underwater vs the parts that mostly stay in the locker.
Be safe y’all! I know that zone and it’s a great place to ride out a pandemic, imo
