  • Regulations are changing daily in the fight against Coronavirus in Panama. We receive word that our shipping agent will be shut down indefinitely, so we can’t get our air filter. The Panamanian government cracks the whip with the lock-down, limiting shopping hours to 6 hours maximum per week per person (at a designated time determined by your ID #), and women and men are not allowed to go into town together. The sale of alcohol is prohibited, and shop keepers are beginning to implement creative Personal Protective Equipment.

      Hah! Rigging! Checking tension on my Brothers boat, Stockton Sailing Club. Started with just me and him tapping cables, and then going to other boats at the docks, "doingggg-doinggg.... Ended up with a dozen sailors , case plus of beer, bottle of Jack; and fourteen different opinions..... Had a great time, never adjusted the rigging, farmed it out......

    With modern boat molds CNC'd from computers, we forget how rudimentary these older fiberglass boats were, and as such, assuming they are symmetrical may not lead to the best results when trying to plumb a spar. On top of that, you have to start with a boat that is trimmed correctly (Are the countertops parallel to the waterline? - it can drive you mad!) Sometimes you have to step back and look at the bigger picture to where it looks right, or tune while on the hard using a laser level. On top of that, you may want to use what you've learned about the weather/lee helm of your boat to adjust the rake in your mast to help compensate for that.
    Tuning the rig on my 1976 Westsail 43 for the first time is when I discovered that the people who made the deck mold molded it with the mast step offset to one side by 1", which meant a 2" difference side-to-side. Yeah, they were smoking a lot of weed back then! The second time I realized just how "eyeballed" these older boat molds were was when I went to mount my Monitor wind vane. There was nothing square about my cockpit molding vs the cap rail vs the mast. All of them were running at different angles so I had to do a little eyeballing of my own in order to mount the Monitor such that it looked right and functioned properly. All the best, Ted

    When you’re tuning the rig, one thing that’s helpful is to lie on your back in the center of the deck, lined up along the length of the vessel, with your head close to the base of the mast. It’s amazing, the first time I tried this, from the dock and just standing in the cockpit, I was certain that it was straight as an arrow. As soon as I laid down, looking up the length of the mast, it looked like a banana. For the first ‘quick and dirty’ stages of the tuning, this can help. LanceH. S/V Great Escape

      Cost guard regulation call for a spark arrestor on the intake on all internal combustion engines. It is not a cheap fine and the mess will serve as such device. This is truly only worth anything on a gas engine, but we know how governments see a fine as a income so let's put it on everything.

    The air filter is not an essential part for a marine engine. There is little to no dust in the air, so it doesn't filter much. It can turn black from blowby or, as you suspect from belt dust. I wouldn't postpone a trip waiting for the filter. I've had boats that didn't have a filter at all. Just my 2 cents worth.

      No way, can't agree at all with your advice. What do you think belt dust is? Or old foam particles from acoustic insulation/firewall? Or paint chips or rust particles? The engine room has loads of particulate matter (especially on old yachts) and why do you think his filter was so filthy and clogged? Use your jury-rigged filter for now but get that new filter back on ASAP bro.

    The current stats regarding the Coronavirus in Panama, there are 2528 cases with 63 deaths and only 16 recovered. Also 101 of those cases are serious. Considering the size of Panama, I think their health system is being overwhelmed like the rest of the world.

    • @abdieldimas9673
      @abdieldimas9673 4 роки тому +4

      Hi Geof,
      Those stats are correct as of today but they obviously will increase. Panama has a weak medical system but better than any other country in the central america region. At this very moment the govt is building new facilities to accommodate patients if things go worst but so far the doctors are doing a really great job. The country is ramping up testing because our scientist were able to develop our own test so in the coming days we will see many more realistic number even though we were having a good amount of testing per day and I speak for myself because I went to get one of those, it came negative and Im all fine but just dont be worry about Panama because this country have enough resources to face this situation, worry about countries were they dont have the money to bid for ventilators, do their own testing and dont have the ability to build new facilities to ease their lack of ICU. Hope each of you stay safe wherever you are.

    • @geoffgelow4241
      @geoffgelow4241 4 роки тому +2

      @@abdieldimas9673 I agree with you. Basically my implication is there is a good reason Panama is doing what they are doing. It sounds like they are doing it right and slowing it down enough to allow the medical systems to keep up with it. Some places still think this is all a joke. And I have heard a number of cruisers complain about all the lockdowns and how it is not fair. To give an idea of how serious this is, NY City had 2000 deaths yesterday just from this virus. Around the USA, the doctors are starting to die, as they do not have enough protective equipment. The virus issue, if not arrested initially, will ramp up very quickly. A resource that would normally last for months or years is lasting only weeks. There are drastic shortages of not just protective wear, but antibiotics and other drugs needed to control the symptoms for the patients.
      So, yes, I am happy to see Panama taking the drastic action needed now, to control this virus. Stay safe.
