PIRACY at Anchor... Are we in DANGER? S04E39
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лип 2024
- Even though it’s statistically unlikely to experience piracy at anchor or to be held up at gunpoint on our sailboat, crime against sailors is a reality and does happen to unlucky sailors all around the world. As we explore new places, how do we decide who to trust? How do we protect ourselves, and how do we deal with the underlying fear of knowing that we’re at the mercy of strangers? Could chasing this dream of sailing around the world actually become the biggest mistake of our lives?

I think it also helps at least in the Caribbean that you speak Spanish, especially when trying to understand intention. This is such an important topic and you both shared your experience so well. Thank you for that. Fair winds
Thanks guys! I’ve been waiting for this episode. My wife and I are planning to cruise into our retirement and are preparing. This is THE best UA-cam presentation on this difficult and sensitive subject hands down!! Bravo Zulu!
The Canadian couple that has a catamaran did a great security episode also. Next to Atticus, they are probably my favorite.
Thanks for putting this together guys. You've dealt with an important topic in such a fun, practical and logical manner. It's of course absolutely necessary to be aware of what 'could' happen, but we can't live in the constant fear of it....otherwise you'd never walk across the street right...you guys are awesome.
You hit the nail on the head for so many solutions to problems when you made the statement that went something like this..........”the solution to the problem is somewhere in between” and the fact you are asking questions and looking at all sides is a big plus. Do you suppose this is an answer to many other problems we face? Again thanks for sharing and letting so many of us “live the Dream” have fun and be safe.
Hi guys, flare launching guns are absolutely necessary and legal. Life saving comes in many forms, spent years as motor yacht captain. Learned by experience no one can handle flare burning in there boat, yours or intruder. Last resort but effective
Necessary and legal where? Certainly not in the UK and Europe, and in the European Caribbean countries.
Michael yes. The comment I responded to specifically said “flare launching gun” Flare guns are treated similarly to firearms in many places.
There are flare guns that will shoot shot gun shells. It’s not recommend but ............
@@defylifeadventure Wikipedia discusses flare guns (and Very Pistols) in great detail, mentioning specifically the U.K. and Russia where weapons are controlled by a legal framework.
You might like to read that Very Pistols are still legally in use, but there are also plastic tube-shaped flare launchers that can be used (once only then disposed), which don't resemble a gun, however the flare is launched nevertheless. One can be legally compliant and also think outside the box (being creative) in this case and be self defensive.

Someone once asked me "Are you afraid to cruise these waters at night?" I said "Ha, I am the reason that people are afraid to cruise at night." Love View....../)____
I am the one who knocks. : )
Exceptional video! Well said and discussed without polarizing a very emotional topic for a lot of cruisers.
You guys make amazing videos, they keep you watching till the end. Thank you
Daylight is when most of the attacks on our fellow cruisers. The perps acted as though they wanted water/food and either tried to board the boats or pulled out guns. We lock the companion way at night and one morning woke up to a man with a machete. The outboard is locked to the dingy w/ stainless chain. We never carry diesel/gas on deck.
I've heard early morning or dusk is a very prevalent time for attacks because both times offer enough light so that they aren't at a disadvantage, but people tend to be off their guard.
Another very down to earth video. Well done you two and thank you for covering this touchy subject. Sail on ⛵️⛵️⛵️
That was very informative and helpful. Great to see you both happy, smiling, and joyful. We really love watching your videos in the many different places. May God continue to bless and protect you all (y'all) on your journey!!
Excellent video. Nice balanced approach to security. Thanks so much. You Buds are the bomb!
Very good. Great topic. Thank you for sharing this!
wow guys the quality of the videos is getting awesome, good job on the cutting down the quantity and upping the quality!! love this channel and the way you two take some subjects that are so real and bring then out for discussion. keep up the good work and stay safe out there! ps, loved the horror movie vibe in this video had me rolling!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Great episode! Security for cruisers requires careful thought and planning.
Outstanding video, thanks folks.
I wondered what you guys would do in the event of piracy. Glad to hear you guys have taken measures and have plan. Thanks for letting us live vicariously through your episodes and for your inspiration. You guys are amazing!
Great discussion on an important topic. Thank you and good luck.
Good one, never occurred to me that you guys would have this problem. Seems you are handling as well as possible and still enjoy he journey. Fair winds and following seas.
Loved this video so much! 🧡🖤 Stay safe!
this was very informative and well done. thank you for sharing!
Awesome video. Great job preparing! Love the cages!
A very measured and balanced outlook. Great episode. Thanks guys.
Great video with a balanced message. You make clear, how we manage risk is a personal choice. Good advice, good tips and, as always, two good people.
Such quality contents ! Great video. Thank's for sharing. 🙂
Maaaaan I do love your guys story telling and edits....Jordans creepy creep shots were really funny , happy sailing guys and be safe !! Cant wait for next video and your live stream !!
Enjoy your episodes about sailing! Great shots of the landscapes and ocean. All the best on your further adventures. Stay safe! Cheers
Very well done episode on safety. FYI, I live in SW Florida and the Sheriffs department has recommended having wasp spray for anyone who doesn't have a firearm. They say it can shoot a focused spray up to 20 plus feet and it is a very strong irritant to eyes and the face. Maybe something to consider.
If the bad guys have guns it might get them killed.
@I'm Cheech - watching from Tampa - Hi neighbor!
@@GeorgeMinton-jb8ky think about it, they can be killed regardless.

Very well though out and presented subject and great video production. Well done!! 4 year full-time cruiser here and have discussed and debated subject with lot of cruisers. Your recommendations are all good. Some additional thoughts: !. Just as on land, Avoid Trouble. Stay away from bad neighborhoods and at night. 2. Wasp spray instead of bear spray. Even for bears(!). 3. Don’t use a lock on your security bars unless leaving the boat. Just use a quick release pin so you can evacuate. Difficult enough for someone outside to try to open and the noise will wake you. 4. Prepare a plan and place to hide in the boat. Let boarders take stuff. It’s replaceable. You’re not. Avoid ANY encounter.
Very nice editing !! Thank you for your great videos and I hope of you do more of spear fishing scenes !!
Y’all are so inspiring 💕 Thank you
Great episode. Your plans are well thought out.
hey guys, that padlock is mighty dangerous. if there's a fire and smoke you'll never find the key and get out on time. Better to run a steel cable through the pinhole that hooks on to something in the cabin so you have a quick emergency release from the inside but can't be reached from the outside..... safe travels... love the channel...
a few ideas to keep safe occurred to me watching.... first! keep the key in the padlock and another close by where you can locate it in the dark blind folded with gloves on. second....that little pepper spray is no deterrent to a motivated robber or pirate.... bear deterrent is way better! Third, is sharpen that machete and make it look like you mean business and forth, hide a firearm where it is well hidden but accessible, somewhere deeper than your flare guns that I would keep a few of for attack emergencies!! Just make sure you hit your target before they board your vessel. Lastly, being well prepared with a back up plan could be enough psychic deterrent to keep the most criminals at bay. Otherwise, shoot the flare gun at extremely close range for accuracy and then put the burning assailant out with a good blast from a fire extinguisher... or reverse that order!
My thoughts as well, you have a serious weapon a flare gun and it should be one inside your birth and one easily accessible on deck/ the helm . And reloads for it . And I know you’re to young to know about the TV sires Sea Hunt but the Spear gun is handy in some situations! There’s some thinks I know that work . I love your safety bars for the cabin entry I remember when you had them made . I thought the lock was a good idea if you weren’t on board, but it’s a dangerous if you have a fire or a electric fires is ALL Smoke dude . I’m glad to hear your being pro active & Love your all in one Alarm ! Get It Installed ASAP . Retired Lake Erie Captain 🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@richardrumplik7023 100% agreed on all counts.
@@richardrumplik7023 i deff agree with the firearm, i recommend an ak pistol since 7.62 is prevelant everywere and it can be kept in a secure location.
Agree with this 100% I had the same thought.
Loved it! Thanks so much. GOD bless you both!
I think common sense is your best weapon against unwanted behavior and you two have it in abundance !! Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
Great solutions to the security vs ventilation problem! Thank you so much for the information...
Good episode.
Good info.
Thanks for sharing.
Life is good~
Thanks for a wonderful and informative video. It's always a pleasure to watch you guys. Be well, stay safe.
You nailed it. I've been wondering about all these issues and you have answered every single question I was wondering about. Thank you so much. By the way, this was the best video I've seen on this subject by far. It was a home run!
GREAT to see you Two again!!!! SAFETY FIRST!!!!!
you are brave and resourceful souls. Thank you for letting me experience vicariously through your adventures
Excellent episode guys. Haven't seen any other sailing channel cover these types of security issues. Stay safe. Cheers!
Brilliant episode- very real and very informative
Wow almost 200k it’s crazy how many subscribers you have picked up during these crazy time. Its because of your great content, editing and your relationship that makes the channel.
Great information !! Another awesome episode, I’ve been watching from the beginning and it was a great feeling to see the faces of the folks you’ve met through the years, it felt like they were my friends too 😎

Great episode! The parting drone shot was amazing!
Great vlog! Funny, engaging, educational. I wish you safety, adventure and wellbeing! Cheers
Great episode, and a well-reasoned approach.
Great Episode. Loved the information and the self reflection.
I've seen people use alarm on radar to give a heads up. Then turn on search light like you said to say hey "I know you are there". False alarms will occur but it's better than a complete surprise. Great info. Thanks again for sharing.
Being in the security business I've got to say you guys are spot on. No sense living in fear or the experience is extinguished. However, assess the risk and craft strategies to mitigate the risk (which you've already done a pretty good job of). I would make two suggestions. First would be to do some reading on recognizing normal and abnormal behaviors in order to establish a security baseline of your surroundings. Second would be to exercise your actions or strategies and practice the actions you would take in different scenarios. You can do that by just talking about what you would do in certian circumstances (called a table top exercise). And/or you can walk through different scenarios. Remember the body can't go where the mind hasn't been. Glad you're thinking this through so you can relax and enjoy the experience and lifestyle I'm slowly working toward. If you ever would like some help with this you can message me on FB. Id love to help however I can.
Awesome, the Buds are back! Your smiles are your best defense. ;)
Great video guys, and your very sensible about what your doing..yeah gotta love it to love it.😎🐈👍
One of the best things you can do is install a bright strobe light system on top of the boat along with a really loud 150 decibel train horn or high pitch sound of your choice... And if there's a threat have a panic switch in several locations to trip the system. If there's one thing an intruder hates is lots of visual and audible bells and whistles attention. They will run faster than they arrived. This only needs a 12 volt power source, and draws very little power.
Travis forsythe what an excellent idea
Great suggestion Travis!
Someone mentioned that a similar system was mentioned in the video. I went back and reviewed it, and I see what they were referring to. What I am talking about would be a lot more heavy duty .. a lot louder... and would flash strobe lighting in all directions, but not trying to discredit the device in the video... At least they have something similar.. .. What I was talking is much different.
@@trevorforrester3142 Always keep 2 pairs of high quality earplugs adjacent to the alarm button 🙄
Absolutely. Many many moons ago when I managed a Quiznos, I set off the alarm by mistake once. The ear-piercing sound I will never forget. A similar shrill alarm sound at insane levels is probably a very good idea.
I just love you guys so much. Always truthful an honest about everything. You guys should be #1 on utube. So real an truthful. Hugs for Tennessee..
🤗 thank you!
Nice editing! I am literally trembling!
Hey Buds!! Great episode!! This is something that has weighed heavily on my mind as we prepare to cast line to travel the world. Thanks for your honest, well thought out approach. Fair Winds
thats why I'm heading to the islands in the South Pacific where it is safe
You guys rock, I love the name of your boat, for the same reason you do.... Atticus Finch is an absolute wonderful role model, and you get that, absolutely perfect....
I think you guys nailed it.... best of luck in your adventures
I think you said it perfect, "you have a strategy" and essentially you do have a plan for your overall safety. You're aware of your surroundings, in past episodes you have avoided clusters of pirate areas, high population areas with higher crime rates. When you have the entire ocean, who needs the deal with all the crowds anyway...LOL. Awareness is key and you're on top of that. Good video...
Well I really appreciate your videos and your thoughtful commentary on stuff the rest of us kind of just wonder about it so it’s good to know. I really appreciate you guys and I loved the funny face over the deck all the time that was hilarious!
Just got a few minutes of the end of the vid now.... Im impressed with what youll are sharing
Very informative. Thank you.. Enjoy your week ahead. I so enjoy your videos. B safe B careful B Happy.

Great episode. Thanks
Awesome episode guys. Great discussion on cruiser safety! Keep the baseball bat, spear-gun and dive knife readily accessible!! Fair winds and following seas Atticus!!!
Great episode. Glad to see you are taking precautions. The thought of anything happening to luscious Desiree made my hairs stand on end. Please look after her. I'm not trying to be sleezy but I am willing to bet that the chap looking through the window was a voyeur wanting to see the two of you.
Thank you guys for providing material every week. Its been crazy here in the US and the adventurers provides my healthy dose of escapism! You are amazing and I wish I was sailing with you. 😁
great video. I loved the faces made by you when replicating faces made by a person who may show up in the middle of the night. I think when you get off that sailboat you may want to terminate your trip in Hollywood. I could see you in a horror movie like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" It was a big hit. They even did commercials with that theme. Looking forward to your first movie. Great job guys.
Thank You, Great Job as usual!
Great video thanks for sharing and be safe
If you keep that machete in easy reach during the day then when someone approaches and you aren't sure what is going on, just stand up with it in your hand and have a small sharpening stone to act like you are just sharpening it as you greet them with a friendly smile. It sends a subtle message that you are to be respected but doesn't look like a threat.
The only real difference between land life and boat life is not having official authorities at the ready to back you up, but by the time they arrive things are usually out of control or already handled, so having a plan is good thinking for either location.
The fact is no matter where you are, when trouble arrives seconds count and the police are always minutes away (or maybe more). Self-protection is ultimately everyone's own responsibility unless you want to always be a victim.
Been watching you guys for a hot min now. Love what you guys do and your passion about sailing. Keep on keepin on you two! ✌️ ❤️ happiness!!
May you always be healthy, happy, and safe! ❤️
Thank you for doing what you do, both of you :)
Nice spooky-halloween video! Security tips are always welcome
These past years of following you kids has shown how cruising Should be done, not with fear but with the knowledge that If you prepare for most things, all will be okay. Love watching every minute of your journey and hope that your passage to the West comes sooner than later.
Please keep up the good work, I always love to watch your videos and you two always inspire me to make this step one day also and travel the world over the beautiful waters!
Hey, thank you for this video and for the reminder that not everyone is the enemy. Be safe and healthy.
Love that closing drone shot ❤️

Hopefully you've made the post that you are ready for anything that might happen and it never happens and you cruise along happily forever after. Stay safe guys. You're doing great.
I immediately started thinking of how to protect you... Your pirate lights security system is exactly what my instinct was (in idea) to suggest... Install it! Love you guys! God bless you both!

Great one guys. Very honest and straightforward and real...perfect really.
Mature thinking about a contentious issue. I feel your approach shows wisdom and common sense but then your approach to just about every problem does too. Keep on doing what you’re doing and enjoy the ride.
Very informative. Thx
Very interesting, thanks. Stay safe .
Thats one thing we worry about, seeing someone approaching the boat and not wanting to interact with them because we don’t really know what they want. We could be passing out on meeting new friends and learning to know them and their culture. Its not something we are used to.
One of your best videos yet.
There's crime all over. The trick is to take standard precautions. My dog makes me feel safe. Sailing Into Freedom has some interesting episodes on all this. Another great episode.
