First time watching this he is very strange.
Sean is 2/5 of the OG Mythbusters on Spellslingers. I feel like Adam would be game for it, don't know about Tori. The hardest one I feel would be Jamie. but let's make it happen!!

Mistake. When you cast Unexplained Disappearance, the Niv Mizzet card draw resolves before the spell does. It says whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, not whenever it resolves. You don't get to resolve the effect of Unexplained Disappearance, surveil, and then draw what you surveiled.
came to the comments for this, thanks. the stack is not the easiest thing to learn as a new player, but sean should know how it works. this little mishap didnt change the course of the game though and took no fun out of it, so everything is ok :)
True. On the other hand, that error didn't end up affecting the course of the game because he decided to leave the card where it was.

@@incogneat0901 if he resolved the trigger of draw on cast, sean would have got to look at a new card and make another desicion. It probly wouldnt have made any difference here. But it would make a larger difference in a different game. More looks is better in the long run

What generally makes Magic intimidating isnt the mechanics, it's the players. I used to go to Friday night magic, but people COULD NOT seem to separate a friendly game from a hardcore tournament setting. And when you not only lose, but get DESTROYED, right away, every time, it really isn't fun. I walk in there with my fun little deck I've put together from old cards, stuff I've gotten from friends and maybe a couple booster packs and sit down against a kid who has a custom formulated deck with each card carefully chosen to WRECK. And then to either have smack talk leveled at you by a 12 year old or even worse get that condescending "gg" from someone who just walked all over you, it's REALLY discouraging.
Limited Draft is the format you're looking for. Learning how to draft is an entirely different skillset but all the players are starting from a truly equal place so it's pure skill and luck and not buying power that dictate your odds of victory.
Part of the reason I stopped playing Hearthstone. Playing casual, trying to build a deck that is fun to play, getting stomped by OP combos and then mocked with the pre-set emotes/chats when I lose 0/25 or something.
In stores, the only casual formats are sealed and edh, sadly is hard to play a 60 cards casual format and regulate it.
Just needed to meet people like me, oh well. Quit MtG, for a long time anyway.
Which is why I always have a (semi)competitive deck, a cool fun deck and a planeswalker deck with me.
The sad realisation that it’s been nearly two years since the last episode 😢

They got busted
They had White Rabbit Project, but it didn't do well enough to get a second season.
They're rebooting the show with new hosts.
They already rebooted and had season 1. I have not heard if there will be a season 2 yet. The new hosts were decent, but are also still learning.
New episode of Deckbusters.
It was really cool how genuinely enthused Kari seemed to be about playing. Theres some guests that come on and theyre good sports but you figure thatll be their first and last foray into the game. But Kari really seemed to dig it. I could see her playing it again on her own.
I really wish this series would come back.
I love Niv Mizzet so much, he's like my favourite card in the game! When you can keep him up for a few rounds it's just beautiful.
Day9 can only win with Blue this season. At least he didn't win with mill this time, lol.

I like how you guys explain everything and go slow enough for me to follow. It makes me feel more invested in the game and I am learning new card synergy.

This kinda thing is why I prefer building decks on the spot rather than using preconstructed ones. Magic's changed so drastically since the days of Beta, and not all of it feels like for the positive.

Amazing episode as always Day9! Gotta call you on that improper stacking of Niv-Mizzet triggers when you cast Unexplained Disappearance (you should have drawn a card + dealt damage with Niv-Mizzet before bouncing the token and Surveiling 1), but I'm always psyched to see Spellslingers on my feed :) Thank you for making easily digestible game content for the newer players!
When Sean played Unexplained Disappearance he should've drawn first, pinged with Niv Mizzet then surveiled.

Izzet is frustrating to play against. My green hexproof deck works well against it most of the time, or an agro Merfolk deck. Haven't had much luck against them with Selesnya so far, unless they fail to counter my game changing spells. If only she had Dawn of Hope to spam angels with, or another Tribunal to Exile Niv-Mizzet.
Anything that includes blue is frustrating. I think Wizards screwed up when they created the mechanics of that color.

Not like the color that hits you in the face without ceremony(red) the color that happily plucks the cards from your hand(black) the color that throws giant wurms at you until you run out of defenses (green) or the color that is so ruthlessly egalitarian that it will destroy a board whenever anyone tries to pull ahead(white)

Izzet is the kind of playstyle that says "hexproof is just an excuse for me to either shoot you in the face, or just blow things up indiscriminately".

They don't use sleeves because of the effect it has on reading them when lit by the lighting I believe.

Liking the series ioverall. But you should really try to get triggered bilities in the right order. You've consistently done the triggered ability after the spell triggering it has already resolved. Usually it doesn't matter but when you get to do things like surveil before drawing the card from niv it is quite an advantage.
(granted it lost value this time because the surveil was kept on top but the concept still stands)

nothing beats getting all of your lands exiled while your opponent laughs I. Your face as he just infinitely shuffles the other copies back into the deck until you mill out.

I have a heavily updated version of the Izzet type of deck and it's easily one of my favorites. Turned it into Wizard based with Adeliz, the Cinder Wind.
Flashbacks to GRN Limited... Niv Mizzet is busted 😂
I started playing with spellslingers a few years ago, and the current decks are fun to watch! 1 thing that would make it more enjoyable is playing creatures and such after combat if they don't interact with combat, keeps your opponent guessing. Also instruct the guests of this strategy becasue magic in not only played on the board but also in the mind through bluffs and concealing information.

I love Magic, and the gameplay is edited really sweet. But what keeps me tuning in is Sean "the endless word slinger" Day 9. This sense of Humor is unique. I remember several years ago when i tuned into Day9 streams on twitch (from Germany at 3 am) just to watch some top notch Starcraft 2 commentary/coaching from sean

Sean should’ve been more encouraging at the end of the game. It’s hard enough for people to stay interested in Magic the gathering as it is because new players usually get decimated, but showing some display of encouraging behavior to the viewers may make the game seem more approachable to everyone watching.

@@dicedoom7162 I suppose they're comparable. But I feel like "Make a token" is harder than "Cast an Instant/Sorcery". And one of them is just an enchantment by itself. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but I feel like once Niv-Mizzet comes down, it acts like a bomb that will single-handedly win in a turn, and that's not really in the spirit of spellslingers.
It's more that she had no removal(or you could say she had already used it on the other flyer) :/ if she had drawn any, he wouldn't of been able to do much other then roll over and die.
@@jawstrock2215 But this is exactly the problem. You can say "well that's because you didn't have removal" in a competitive context, but it is fucking annoying to be trying to play a casual/newbie-friendly/not-well-tuned-deck and then just get one-turn-decimated because you couldn't immediately remove a rare bomb.
I do think it's easier for Niv-Mizzet to just go off than to get a massive swarm of angels from DV; drawing cards is built in to the game, it's easy to stack a deck with instants & sorceries (and Sean's was), it's not quite so easy to spam token generation without a lot of work setting up the combo.
Not if Kari had Vivien Reid in her Selesnya deck. Vivien shuts Niv down real quick... But, I love Niv Mizzet and it was great seeing him on Spellslingers.
More spellslingers pleeeease!!! This is the only show I watch on g&s anymore outside of CR.
Would be pretty coold if like Stephen Colbert or Michael b Jordan was on this.

I may have enjoyed magic as shown here, if played like this. However, everyone could not help but show off their OP 1 turn infinite deck, which turned me off magic. Now I shiver whenever I see magic cards in person.
I don't see the point in the excessive drive to win in under an X-number of turns. I play it just to have fun.
Try playing limited events, like Draft or Sealed. It's a much more even playing field.
+Julian Moretti Not even vintage decks win on turn 1 frequently. I feel like you're probably not playing against people with 20 grand worth of magic cards so i'll just assume this was a bunch of hyperbole.
Not sure if you're still doing this anymore but it would be cool to have Dan Avidan from Game Grumps/NSP on. He's a very avid player.
