It was much much better before PSG took over, when Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Monaco and Bordeaux were all fighting for the title
Yeah, the derbies and rivalries in Ligue 1 are amazing. PSG's dominance is a big problem, the squad rules also kill the league too because they're basically tailor made for PSG. Ligue 1 does do an amazing job of develop French talent for the national team though because of those rules and the situation of the league so there is a bit of an upside.
Lates 2000’s to early 2010’s ligue 1 was great, along with 90’s ligue 1
Even the Lyon dominance there was still good title fights
Well yea, competition makes the league more interesting. Which is why man city could be really bad for the prem if they keep winning.
Agreed. Even Montpellier won in 2011-2012. Then PSG won 10 of the next 12 seasons. Who wants to watch a league where the title is decided before the season starts?
imo, historically the portuguese and dutch leagues are both bigger than ligue 1. france have 1 european cup/champions league win with 1 club. portugal have 4 from 2 clubs. the netherlands have 6 from 3 clubs. without psg they'd probably have a lower coefficient even today.
That’s true and even if you include the europa and conference league France still only have 1 and the Dutch and Portuguese teams have even more and then even Scotland, Russia and Sweden have more than France
Thats true, but thats not how the coefficient works. And to be fair the youth academies in France are extremely good at producing world class talent. Almost every football club in all top teams have atleast a French player. Most of these clubs sell their wonderkids or best player every season and still manages to make it into QF of European competitions every year so imo they are still deserved of that 5th spot. Until another league pass them in the coefficient.
@@titofernandez1500 I do completely agree although the Portuguese league has made a lot of youth wonder kids too so overtime it could flip but rn with the way France and its youth are I think they’re safe for a long while
@@pkr6639 yeah, true. But not many Portuguese players are sold until a certain age which entails that Portuguese teams are better at keeping the players and dont actually have to sell them at such a young age as French players like for example Bitshiabu, Ekitike, Doku, Lukeba, Ugochukwu, Baleba and many more from vastly different French clubs selling. Whilst the normal three clubs selling in Portugal is Benfica, Sporting and Porto. Sometimes Braga. The other teams tend to sell players domestically like for example Otavio.
This makes it less likely to see Portuguese teams other than the usual three in European places.
@@titofernandez1500 they were already passed by the dutch league last year
When your marketing strategy is Mbappe first, PSG second and then nothing what can you expect? Maybe hype up the other teams. Sky Sports will hype Bournemouth vs Brentford like it's a Superbowl main eventing a Wrestlemania!!
The thing about priemer league is that almost any game have unexpected result a lot more than any league. I mean yes man city is like 6/7 champions in premier league but man some of that season they really in the final day of the league we know they won. This year is one of it. Remember the year where liverpool and man city seperate each other 1 point and both of them are very very high point more than 90. That make every audience have to watch all of it because point is very matter. Not just for champion but for relegation. Like preimer league relegation is stupidly crazy. Like every single year we will know the 3 relegate in the final year. Becauae of most teams can be crazy good at one day while the whole time they litteraly shit
@thuantran5802 Really, that's the best argument you can come up with? Because that happens in every league. Bochum beat Bayern, Le Havre drew with PSG (but were winning until the 80th minute), etc.
It's not unique to the Premier League. It's just that the Prem is the only one to include it in their marketing.
And close title races? Again, last year's Bundesliga, 2021 Ligue 1 (Lille won), last year's Ligue 1, where Lens were within a point of PSG. Happens in every league, even if one team is particularly dominant.
Fair enough, the Prem may be better than every other league, but at least point out the unique qualities of the Prem, such as the money and the stars, rather than the usual happenings of any self respecting league.
@@thuantran5802 😂😂😂this happens in every league😂😂
It's pretty basic. If you don't show that you value your product, then you can't complain when nobody else does! Saying "We want £1 billion a year" isn't showing you value it. "The league of talents" was the right idea. Another could be to drop VAR and call it "football as it's meant to be"

This is why building international brand is so important... Everyone shits on fans outside but they play a significant role in generating majority of the revenue as a fan.
Yeah that by putting it on public tv stations. I’m a huge Italian football fan because it was free after school and I couldn’t afford a premier league subscription here in Australia as a poor kid.
Yeah I’ve always said that these other leagues need to produce and distribute their product as a free to air product in football starved countries to build fan interest in their product, instead they sell them for what scraps they can to streaming services no one has and even then it isn’t advertised or featured on those services and then their marketing teams are confused that no one watches or has interest their leagues 🤦🏽♂️

@@shadow_realm47 I meant when Apple offered the Pac-12 a Contract after Fox wasn't interested in renewing their TV Deal for more Money.
Ironically, DAZN owns the TV rights to the Portuguese league
The fall rests on the Ligue1 governing body and its director Labrune. First, 5 years ago they severed ties with the historical broadcaster Canal+ to pursue a deal valued at one billion euros with an inexperienced broadcaster just to have this broadcaster go bankrupt before the end of the fist season. This deal was replaced by Amazon for a much lower fee around 250 million €. The governing body kept thinking that untold riches laid hidden abroad while in fact foreign broadcasting market have been in decline for most leagues even before the Mbappe exit. At the same time, domestic broadcasters are snubbing the offer because working with the Ligue is so difficult (and other sports are on the rise like rugby or F1). The 1-billion promise to clubs was never realistic and was mostly a signal from Labrune to other clubs' presidents not to worry (when of course they should have been very worried). The Ligue-1 governing body kept acting like there was an overabundance of viewers and possible broadcasters when in fact it has been the very opposite, and their way of doing things (like changing their minds and aims every other day) is simply not conducting of good business which is why nobody wants to buy the rights. This of course puts most pro clubs in a dire situation as broadcasting rights are the main source of income (but club heads still seem to support Labrune at this point). The likely outcome: the club will have to take a haircut, forcing many to sell their talents to balance the books, as a whole the standing of Ligue-1 will drop in Europe, and PSG will even more likely dominate the league while struggling to attract talents to compete in CL. The Qataris are also part of the governing body so it's nice to see they'll have to face the consequences of their actions.

The problem with Ligue 1 is that, with PSG being so heavily funded compared to everyone else, and them being the most dominant team winning 10 of the last 13 seasons since they were taken over, it's a boring league.
I know people shit on the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, La Liga for Barcelona & Real Madrid and more recently the Premier League for Man City, but those leagues are still competitive, you get upsets, you get interesting matches etc. but as someone who's watched alot of Ligue 1 when it was on BT Sport and I was hungover as shit on a Sunday, the matches were boring, I don't know why but they were just never exciting to watch.
Was it as boring as Italian football in the 90s on channel 4?
Ligue, at least last year, was extremely defensive too
And their English commentary is really boring
Watched a match between Rennes and PSG a couple of years ago and thought this Rennes guy in midfield was amazing, look him up and its a 16 year old(Camavinga) which is what the French league delivers but I cant say its something I go out of my way to watch.
They should use this opportunity to start a ligue 1 streaming service rather than using a tv broadcaster

The only French team to ever win a CL or EL was Marseille in 1993 and that prize was overshadowed by a bribery scandal.... Including the Ligue 1 in a 'top 5 leagues' is actually very weird. There is a top 4 leagues, then comes The Netherlands and Portugal (historically, but they are closing in on France in the ranking atm), and then comes France...
Brasil Portugal and Netherlands for me are the Next 3. Brasil is legendary for wonderkids and their fans are crazy and you can get a cheap legend from them on the 2010-2014 fifas! You can actually sign Kaka and Ronaldinho for nothing!
Netherland and Portugal has bigger clubs BUT l1 is a better league. Take the average player in L1, he would be very good in eredivisie (just look at Boscagli, Walter Benitez) or in Portugal (Simon Banza, Zaydou Youssouf was 2 bad players in L1 and are two good players there)
Theya re included in the top 5 according to the level they have today, the history of the league is totally irrelevant.

I think they'll be fine; England has a strong FA and League One might be the best third-tier league in the world
lol
It's not only the TV deal offer that is going to go down because the TV partners smell blood (and see it now). Teams from other top leagues also smell and see the blood and the french league might see an exodus of players leave on a bargain, because clubs are going to need the money. Maybe PSG picks some of them but most of them will end up on England, Spain, Italy or Germany. They need to fix this fast.
Uber Taleted Farm System Ligue 1 has a ring to it
I think next season is the most interested j wjll ever be with Will Still signing for Rc lens.
Their only chance I think is to sign a longer term deal at a discounted rate from what the normal would be. That way they could get significantly more this upcoming year than they would otherwise, but it will come at the cost of future revenue
Let's face it. most people would prefer to watch the Championship than Ligue 1. It's a shame though, because Ligue 1 academies have produced some amazing players over the years, in particular from working class backgrounds and first and second generation players from the former French colonies. Zidane came from Bordeaux, Thuram and Henry from Monaco, Ribery, Vieira etc, as well as the new crop of players such as Mbappe,, Tchouameni and Camavinga.
Funny thing is that PSG was supposed to elevate the league, yet i think it actually killed it
There's only one big club in France, and that is Olympique Marseille.
now watch as apple tv buys it's broadcast rights outright and puts it behind 2nd season pass paywall
Each club in Ligue 1 pays more taxes than the clubs of the other top 4 leagues combined, that completely hinders them, on talent alone it would be much higher up
EPL, LA LIGA, SIRIE A, WILL ALWAYS BE THE TOP 3 LEAGUES ROTATING EVERY COUPLE YEARS FOR THE TOP SPOT. NO PLAYER OR CLUB WILL EVER CHANGE THAT.
Well this is hilariously bad for many reasons well before the october 1billion $ fail...
The main issue was the mediapro fiasco in 2020-2021, after the Ligue 1/2 administration (LFP) decided to sell 80% of all rights to a new unknown media (media pro).
It was shity because you had to pay 20e per month to watch 80% of the matches and 20e per month to watch canal/bein to watch the 2-3 main matchs of the weekends + champions league/premiere league etc..
After 2years and the pandemic in 2020, it failed payements. So way less money for clubs and the main media actors (canal +; bein; rmc) had leverage to negotiate lower pricing.
With Amazon and dazn coming in, it just created a shitty situation for the consumer were you had to pay 2-3 20e per month subscription to watch all the ligue 1 matches. So obviously the media group are not getting their money back thus them not wanting to spend a ridiculous 1billion$ for tv rights. If you have the time studying Vincent Labrune (president of the LFP) absurd management of the deal + huge salary, spendings, new office in central Paris etc. It is worth it: one word scumbag.
2 things:
-it was interesting before PSG were purchased, now you have 19 teams that can't be bothered because they are competing for nothing
-Ligue 1 signed a deal with a Spanish TV company (Mediapro) that promised to pay them more than what the Serie A or Bundesliga were earning. Nobody who lived in reality thought that was plausible. Indeed Mediapro rescinded the deal paying virtually nothing.
All the problems of today in Ligue 1 are consequences of these points.
18 clubs now in L1
I even watched luton matches but just never felt like watching psg much less their lower teams.
For comparison, the last time a non-top 4 league won the UCL was when Porto won 20 years ago...against Monaco no less. Ligue 1 just has more money than the Liga Portugal and the Eredivisie, otherwise it would be below them both.
As an American who has lived in Marseille and primarily watches the French league, I sadly agree with a lot of these takes. However, it is a VERY fun league to watch.
I’m sorry to hear you had to live in Marseille
Here's what I think Ligue 1 should do sign a deal with YT they pump money in then they allow football YT channels to air free matches Zealand could air PSG vs Lens then lollujo could air PSG vs OM basically they get 2 matches of the Ligue 1 season with 50/50 Gate receipts and merchandise split between the creator, PSG and the other club. It's a no brainier free football matches for us with 15 mins of ads at half time.
I am in South America, and besides my national league, I watch the premier league and Seria A. The problem with Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Sometimes La Liga is that there is they are a 1 maybe 2 teams league, not much entertainment in watching if PSG are going to be champions on Match day 28 or 29. (I know the premier league is beginning to suffer from the same problem, but at least there is a tittle fight until match day 38)
What I think Ligue 1 should do is accept a deal that doesn´t offer much money, but instead can offer worldwide, not expensive broadcasting (Think of Disney +) and focus on creating a narrative around the league, maybe promote some rivalries between teams (I have no clue what the el clasico is in France). Maybe focus on showing that league 1 offers some exciting form of younger football, much more physical, since they have so many young players. But definitely don´t make it all about PSG and the new 200M player. Only use PSG as the villain of the story.
Then maybe in like 6 years you can start to ask on a 1 billion contract.
Hey nice video!
More infos about all this mess if you want. First of all, all of this sh*t could be imputed to Vincent Labrune, actual president of French Pro League who handle TV right (he did also lot of other crappy thing, but it's other stories). Saying to everyone "we're gonna get the billions in right" even tough everyone in France knew that is just impossible. And in fact, that is the second time in five year of something like this happening (2020 with Mediapro who got the TV Right and in the end paid nothing)!
Currently they try to think of all kind of thing like getting some match in USA (and french fans really don't like that idea because it could cause disadvantage to a team that get 1 match less at home). But also said "Hey don't worry, we're going to create our own TV channel, and it will be 25€/month" which is incredibly stupid because in France that is way much expensive for this, and so pretty much everyone in France plan to watch the matches of the next season with iptv or streaming.
To sum up, in general in France we got really good athletes but really shitty chairman who make decision more for their greediness than the good of our sport. And the few time we got good chairman, the few people that could get more money try to take them down (like what we got currently with Marseille and greedy fans that want Pablo Longoria to quit the club, but another story too).
To play devils advocate if they don't get a tv deal does that mean it could default to free to view television, i'd watch that than spend a stupid amount of money to watch my own league.
As an American (who admittedly likes French culture quite a bit), I would love to watch a good Ligue 1 match, but there's just no easy cord-cuttimg avenue in the US. I don't frankly care if it's a "top league" (the main league I watch is Serie A after all), but it simply has to be at least somewhat accessible to get the occasional curious fan to watch a match or two
"DAZN", pronounced "da zone", is not just a random "Jake Paul boxing" company but a major sports broadcaster in Europe, holding rights to the Bundesliga in Germany, Serie A in Italy etc.

France has just been pillaged by teams abroad. The only club that can afford to hold onto and develop players at that top level is Paris. The issue isn't from a sporting perspective, it's a financial one. Without any sort of investment from the state into the infrastructure of the leagues, they will always be forced to let their UCL level players go because they don't have the money to assemble squads that can compete in Europe. Same reason Italy feels so empty now. Atalanta had a great season, but none of their players are relatively stellar. If Ligue 1 just got a bit of a financial break, we'd see it start to tick back up in popularity. No reason the best player OL could afford last season was Lacazette. Look at the names from the Monaco super team that had Mbappé. If Monaco wasn't constantly up against FFP and competition from teams that had all but guaranteed UCL slots, they probably could have held onto players like Mendy, Fabinho, Bernardo, etc. You can't argue France isn't a top league talent wise without absolutely telling on yourself. Almost half of the top competing UCL players came from a team in France. The state needs to step in and subsidize the difference in offer and expectation. If France wants their league to remain popular in Europe, they will need to invest in it themselves. If not, it's really of no consequence to the country because they're one of the only countries out of the 5 who's culture doesn't entirely revolve around football (England and Spain especially).
I would argue Germany and Spain probably but with Germany it's more in the context of the fact that Germans just love sports lol I think at least 1/3 of Germans belong to local sports clubs or something like that
England is obviously fanatical too, but imo is more globalised/capitalised/etc in that more of their population is focused on other things; also, similar to Germany, they have many sports that are popular with large percentages of their population [rugby and cricket for starters, but also tennis, golf, all kinds of racing, even pub games, etc]
Italy imo has a large divide between those that love football and those that despise it [usually due to corruption, etc which is symbolic of the country as a whole], plus most of the major stadia are crumbling, their national team [both at youth and senior levels] has been mismanaged for a while now, and so on, but still manage to draw major crowds and have done very well in Europe since Juve was finally stopped from cheating [again lmao] so they're hard to place
So true, ligue 1 getting raided is so sad
Although they might not be interesting to watch but some of the best players itw are from that league. Mbappe , Camavinga , Tchouameni, Yoro ( future Star ) , Ferland Mendy , …
Why this happen, French TV no like McDonalds?
Ty, Liga Portugal and Eredevise both clear Ligue 1
More people have probably still watched more of the French league over the Saudi Pro league!😂
I watch or keep up with all the big leagues but even with Messi Neymar and Mbappe I couldn’t care less about league 1. Only watched PSG choke the champions league
I'll watch Curling or Cross-Country skiing before even considering watching Ligue 1. WNBA may be close this year.
Cailtin Clark can’t help that sorry league atleast she got a bag
I have Bein sports, and I can say that I watched the Turkish league rather than League1. And I watch the EFL over both. Too many games, so choices must be made above and beyond the top 4 and various Cup games which are must watch.
It's sheep in wolf clothing zealand
peep their stadiums attendances, fucking abysmal, only Lens had actual ful support all season
It’s not as bad as the Portugal league and I would say bad ligue 1 clubs generally have better attendance than bad serie a clubs
Nonsense! Marseille has the largest stadium in the country and it's full every home game. In fact, the Velodrome has been full every home match for half a century.
@@benficademacaufanFrance has almost 7x the population of Portugal and only 2.5x the attendance.
@@kalmenbarkin5708 You do know that these numbers have almost no relation to each other whatsoever????
Population size doesnt translate to average attendence AT ALL. As both France and Portugal are very into football, the nations liking can be excluded as a possible reason.
What even is this lmao
That's a terrible take bro yk nothing about L1 to say that...
Lyon Marsielle lille lyon could be great if they stopped turning their players out... You need to have more thsn one team that holds onto good players...
Work within your means, get rewarded beyond them. Here's hoping teams give the youth a chance and the lower teams make good runs in the French Cup.
that first joke🤣🤣
When MLS has a streaming deal before Ligue 1, that says something about Ligue 1, and MLS had the streaming deal before Messi came over.
I believe DAZN is supposed to be pronounced like "da zone" but I prefer Propa Boxing's "Dazun". Of course Zealand calls it "days in" days in eating chocolate turtles and not going on a run more like!
Why do the rights always have to be exclusive? If multiple broadcasters had the rights, leagues could make more (selling to multiple companies), and prices would be more reasonable due to the free market with competition.
Never considered Ligue 1 one of the big 5. That'd be Eredivise.
Big 4
Gotta call UA-cam
I was waiting for the punchline which is of course:
League 1 is called MC DONALDS League 1 starting next season.
ryan kent and fenrbahceeeeeeee
I did enjoy Ligue 1 in the 00s, I've not watched it since the PSG takeover.
Man I watched Ligue 1 on Benin in the states way more than the PL but I now I’m in the minority
It's not as hilariously bad as Zealand's background tho
FWIW: BeIN put on great broadcasts here in the US. Ligue 1 struggles to captivate in the way that the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga captivate an audience.
