The worst part is the attacker/midfielder bias that these awards have. It is extremely hard or almost impossible for a defender or goalkeeper to win an international award like this.

@@PH-jv4iknot really, in the entire history of Ballon d'Or, only 1 was awarded to a goalkeeper being Lev Yashin and 4 to center backs: 1 for Fabio Cannavaro, 1 for Matthias Sammer and 2 for Franz Beckenbauer, but even these last two were really offensive scoring a lot of goals from open game.
It always has been, since we want to see the best player in a player with the best technical abilities: passing, shooting, dribbling and so on...

As you said yourself, the ballon d'Or is not necessarily about being the best player but also being a popular player, i.e. a popularity contest. Just because someone won it doesn't mean he was the best player in the world that year.

Vinicius was injured for half of the season and can't even show up for Brazil. Bellingham was a clutch player for many ganes but his role in build up was so greatly sized down that he barely did anything noteable in the later half of the season when it wasn't offense.
Mbappe has no noteable achievement besides his 100th Ligue 1 and Coup de France if he doesn't win the Euros after being handed the easiest path into a UCL final and still bottling it + not looking hot ever since those games against the BvB.
If we argue about carrying a team and being a big game player Mats Hummels should be objectively awarded the way he carried that horrid Dortmund side to a 5th and a UCL final.
If we're talking about concistently being great this season Dani Carvahal, Kroos and almost everyone in that unbeaten Leverkusen side comes to mind.

When you take the legends out of the picture because they simply are not here anymore, he should probably be the winner. I'm not even saying there aren't better players, but this season nobody came close to his level on the highest level of football. It would be deserved. The likes of Haaland and Mbappé ghosted when it mattered the most. Bellingham was amazing at the start of the season but faded a bit by the end of it, but still should probably be the second.

The Ballon Dor is the best PLAYER in the world. It is an INDIVIDUAL award. It needs to go to the best PLAYER. Not a good player on the best TEAM. Its about individual performance, winning Champions league does not automatically qualify you for the award.

Since the Messi - Ronaldo era coincided with the rise of social networks, there's a ton of people who only know how to cover that particular horse race and now they're scared. Van Dijk and Neuer deserved their awards but ever since Ronaldo and Messi showed up offensive numbers matter 10 times more than being actually concistently good on other positions.
If Bellingham's first half of the season and Vini's second half were combined on a player it would be inarguably that player but now it's legit just a tossup to what offensive player will be in a EURO winning team.
In my opinion Kroos, Hummels, Grimaldo and Carvahal have been the best players of the season but they will likely not be awarded since the others are just popular.
