  • In the world of used motorcycles, these are two bikes that each represent a great value. Because they can be had for around the same money, I thought this would be an interesting comparison. I talk about the pluses and minuses of each machine and ride them back to back to give my riding impressions of each. Is one of these machines right for you? Let's go for a ride and find out!

The older i get the more my arthritis tells me buy an automatic. Im more likely to buy an old hondamatic 750 over the new dtc.
As usual a very informative video.

I must admit that I initially thought you were biased toward the Honda and were going to give the Kawi the shaft (pun intended). But you were open minded and essentially chose the correct bike. Haha. My only gripe that everyone does is calling it the Concours 1400 but really it’s the Concours 14. I know, I know, it’s my own little problem and I’m coping. Nice video.

Hi Jon; thank you very much for the excellent comparison video.
After having ridden a scooter, I am very much attracted to the ease of operation of an automatic bike. The Honda NC700X DCT gets a lot of my attention, but at the same time I recall a somewhat unpleasant experience from test riding the DCT equipped Honda CRF1100F, and that is the clicking noise from the transmission every time it made gear changes.I don't know how is the DCT on the NC700X on that regard.
Nowdays, automatic bikes are available as big scooters too; such as Yamaha T-max 530 and few European brands also offer mid size(for a traditional bike) so called big scooters.
I really like the smooth operation of the scooters much like the torque converter equipped cars of the modern era. I wonder which will be better, big scooter or the DCT equipped NC700X if used around town as commuter.
One thing I would like to say about the Kawasaki Concours 14, is about its muffler. I undestand it's a matter of personal preference, but to me the muffler is ugly and visually too big. It's a stark contrast to the timeless beauty of the mufflers from the original Z1 and KZ900.

The clicking on any Honda with a DCT is the DCT shifting through the gears - it is an automatically shifted manual transmission. Scooters have different types of transmissions.
I agree about modern exhausts - they are universally ugly. Not the art pieces they once were. Cheers!

Thanks for your responce Jon. Even though I understand that the clicking noise is the noise of gears being changed, I kind of like the silent nature of torque converter equipped ATs or the silent mode of operation of the scooters which uses rubber belts and variators ; but that is just my opinion.
Oh, by the way Honda also made in the past a V-twin motorcycle with a clutch lever-less automatic transmission; and it used some type of hydrostatic drive in its transmission.
The one that I drove was an JDM model; I don't know if Honda ever exported this bike to the US.

@@76Datsun280zturbo They did - we got the CB400 automatic and the earlier CB750 automatic. Cheers!

Yeah!, you are right Jon; Honda made those torque converter 2-speed automatic bikes back then.I also would like to point out that the one I'm talking about is a model called DN-01. If I'm not wrong, Honda made this bike only from 2005 to 2009 model year. It was powered by a watercooled V-twin engine displacing 680cc and featured an oil based hydrostatic transmission and also had a shaft final drive.

@76Datsun280zturbo They look like a sport scooter right? I don't have any experience with the DN-01, but it looks interesting. The 650 Bergman is a great bike. Cheers!

Hi Jon. On the Honda, do you ever find yourself reaching for the clutch? 😉

    • @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
      @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538  2 роки тому +1

Yes! However, I really appreciate that Honda left the brakes where they should be: right hand front and right foot rear. There's nothing quite like grabbing the clutch lever (rear brake) on a Suzuki Bergman 650!
