  • This is a great commuter. If you want a 70mpg motorcycle, capable of putting up with highway speeds and racking up miles, and yet can take you work every day without hesitation. This perhaps is the bike for you

I rode this bike from NC to AZ,over 2600 miles with some other stops up north.
I keep seeing folks call this a commuter despite it being heavily capable of sport touring, in the Doug Demuro world of saying "Quirky", others I've met that hear the same thing will usually think less of the bike, despite it being in the 700cc range, which confuses me at times because it's has great ergonomics, the vibrations aren't that bad and can carry itself very well after you've gotten used to feeling where the range of the lower end torque is at and utilize the most of it. Commuter as a title for this bike is completely fine considering our lack of higher powered scooters in the US and this thing gladly fills the roles you expect it to fill.
The CB500X, still capable of highway use like any 300cc would, will do fine but the NC700X is just a step under the Yamaha Tracer which if I even think of changing bikes, that would be my "upgrade" but I like the NC too much now to consider even changing out. It's plainly the ergonomics for me I've embedded my time into enjoying anyway, I don't despise sport bikes or cruisers, the NC can plainly do what you need or want of it being city or state travel.
For your rear baggage issue, I honestly just bought the Givi top rack with my saddle bag supports and avoid the gas refilling issue completely. I used the waist strap of my assault pack on the seat and wheel well.
If I lived in the EU, I would definitely own a scooter in the 600+ range but since the US looks away from those scooters, looking at you X-ADV 750.

Valves are a 30 min job once you done it once . I would change fork oil and grease linkage bearings every 16000 (easy) . Long term there's corroding terminals to the regulator , bit tricky to get to , and i had a corroded connection from ignition switch ..both fixed on the fly but ive ridden through really deep floods many times . Regularly loosen and retighten brake fluid reservoir caps before they pita seize . Great bike .

When I'm on a motorcycle adventure, the last thing that I want to do is unload my luggage, so that I can remove my seat, so that I can put gas in my motorcycle, and then have to load it back up, again. Having just a 3.7 gallon maximum fuel capacity means that you would need to do that, frequently.
      I ride a Kawasaki Versys 650.
Not one single component on the NC700 is better than what the Versys 650 is equipped with.

Here’s what I know about single/dual front discs, it’s something to think about before complaining about having a single disc.
do you remember when you were a little kid and you had a little car that had a fly wheel inside of it that if you ran the car across the floor by hand it would spin that fly wheel, and put the car down, and it would go by itself. That is a fly wheel
when you were a kid do you remember ever playing with a gyroscope?
A brake disc is a gyroscope and it is a fly wheel. because it is a gyroscope, not only takes energy to get it to spin, but it does not like to change directions once it is spinning.
because a brake disc is also a fly wheel, it takes energy to get it to spin, and it doesn’t want to slow down quickly. It takes energy to accelerate and to decelerate
add up all the weight of a second disc in the front of your motorcycle. Do you have the disk, the bolts that bolted to the wheel, you have the caliper, you have the brake pads, you have the plumbing with the brake fluid in it. That adds up. that is called unsprung weight. It may not seem like a lot, but your suspension Hass to be tuned to absorb that weight when you impact a bump. That means your springs your suspension Hass to be stiffer than if you had just a single disc. That also means that you have to have heavier oil to control the spring rebound. That slows down how quickly your front suspension can react to the next bump and the next one especially if they are close together on the road. If you don’t think this is a problem, you need to speak to an engineer. Porch knows it’s a problem because they use titanium Lugnuts to build their wheels on just to save a few ounces.
disc brakes also have drag when you are not using the brakes. If you don’t believe me, get your front wheel off the ground using your center stand if you have one, and give the front wheel a healthy spin. It will not turn like a bicycle wheel for about 30 seconds by itself. You will be lucky to get one whole spin out of it because of brake pad drag.
hey single disc makes about 200 to 300 hp. Who needs a 400 to 600 hp front brake on a motorcycle that weighs less than 1000 pounds? You can walk that front tire up with two fingers on the brake lever with a single disc.. having dual front discs is not necessary on most motorcycles. They do not put two discs on each front wheel of your car.
I road raced motorcycles .. One of the tracks had a 3500 foot downhill straight away with a first gear turn at the end. You really needed a lot of brakes at that place.. so I tried a door front disc brake set up on my racebike. Here is what happened.
I lost about 5 miles an hour in acceleration against competitors that I was slightly faster than when I only had one disc.
race tracks are very bumpy because the cars turn up the asphalt with their high grip tires when they accelerate in the middle of turns on the exit. Before when I had a single disc I could ride right over those bumps in the machine with track Street. When I added the second disk, my machine would shatter the front end and I would drift off line.
there were switchbacks at this track where it was hard right, hard left, hard right in quick succession in one section. With the single disc, four years, I could go through that section in third gear without letting off the gas. When I went to the single desk, I ran off the track every time I tried to exit the second turn without letting off the gas, because the machine had an extra gyroscope upfront that did not like to change directions. It took longer for me to get the bike to flip/rotate.
The result of adding that fly wheel/gyroscope/extra drag/unsprung weight of the second disc, I was almost five seconds a lap slower than ever. and I was working harder to wrestle the machine to get it to turn, and to maintain control through bumpy turns.
duel disk do have one benefit. You are converting kinetic energy into heat. You can convert more kinetic energy, that’s energy in motion, if you have a place to store it, and that second disc does have a place to dump the heat, and other words, that second disc will absorb the energy of slowing down. and because There are two discs when you have dual discs, The machine will break while you are upright in a straight line instead of pulling to one side that the disc is on that you don’t even notice. But, when you have dual discs and you break into corners, it pulls your wheels straight and make sure bike stand up in the turn.. in the mid-80s when 16 inch front wheels were the rage on sport bikes, dual discs was a real problem with 16 inch wheels because it would make the bike hard to keep it leaned over in a turn while breaking because, breaking would pour the wheels straight if you had dual discs in the bike would stand up in the turn..
So don’t complain about having a single disc on your motorcycle. That second disc is more trouble than it’s worth believe me. I’ve been there

Looking into better gas tank options, but i usually ride with a backpack, so storage isn't a huge deal, but I ride 6 days a week.
    Super happy.

I've had many bikes and my last bike prior to the NC 700 was the 6th Gen VFR which is still my all time favorite however, in this dispensation in search for a fun, affordable motorcycle I had two difficult choices, an older Blackbird with insane amounts of power and comfort but far older and expensive to maintain. At my age this was a no brainer and so far so good.
Pleasantly surprised with the performance knowing this was no racer but I will soon be touring through South Africa reliably and that is a huge benefit around here.

The Yamaha MT-09 triple has a pretty canted cylinder-to-crankcase angle, as well, but nothing like this! That really is quite surprising. I wonder if that relates to its relatively low-revving spec.

You are right. I think it was started in motorcycle magazine when they compared it to a honda fit. But no one is saying its a honda fit engine. I think the comparison is based on the angle of the cylinders.

    • @Daschickenify
      @Daschickenify 4 роки тому +4

It is very hard to believe that is false. It's most likely half of a L13A, which is 1339cc and has a 73mm bore, 80mm stroke. half of 1339 is 669.5. NC700 is "670cc", has the same bore and stroke, compression ratio is within 0.1. The valvetrain and rocker arm setup is extremely similar looking. The close together rockers and distant rockers mean that the engine has been turned around, which is again consistent with the car engine. The fit's exhaust is towards the rear, while the NC's is towards the front. It also revs about as high as a car engine. Coincidence? The crank is different though, as far as I know. And no VTEC unfortunately. I wonder how easy it would be to add VTEC back in. Also, since they dropped VTEC, which profile did they pick? Probably the high RPM one.
As for the 750x, it appears to be a further development from the NC700, not related to the L series car engines. The bigger L series 1.5 liter engines retain the bore and lengthen the stroke. NC750 did the opposite.
      .
      To check out the valvetrain:
      .
      NC700, check out 3:30
      ua-cam.com/video/oWUCFoz01tk/v-deo.html
      Honda Fit, check out 7:06
      ua-cam.com/video/darifCUJf2A/v-deo.html
      .
As for being related to a car engine, that really isn't a bad thing. Honda probably doesn't admit it (I thought they did at one point?) because its less sexy to say its half a car engine. I think it's awesome that car engines are moving to motorcycles, that means WAY better fuel economy, better low end power, and likely better reliability too. I like having options, and this is now another option. I still won't give up my screamers though..
