Приєднався 3 гру 2020
Jon's Motorcycle Rescue and Review was born out of my passion for motorcycles. I love riding, reviewing, buying, servicing, restoring, and improving all types of motorcycles. I am especially fond of mid 1970's through mid 1980's Japanese motorcycles. My goal is to share my experiences with the motorcycles and the products used in their restoration and improvement.
1980s Muscle Bike Showdown - Yamaha XS1100 vs FJ1200 vs XJ1100!
In this fun ride comparison video we're riding Yamahas big-bore, air-cooled muscle bikes of the 1980s and I'll pick a winner at the end! The bikes featured are the Yamaha XS1100 Special, Yamaha XJ1100 Maxim, and Yamaha FJ1200. These are four recent restoration projects and each of these bikes has been thoroughly gone through and upgraded with suspension, handlebar and brake mods that unlock their sporting potential. Though these great bikes are often overshadowed by the Yamaha V-Max 1200, they still offer impressive performance (among the quickest bikes of their time), classic styling and mechanical simplicity compared to the later bikes. Which one is the winner? Let's find out together!

World's Fastest Motorcycle! Suzuki Gen 1 Hayabusa Review 1999-2007

I'm super excited about this weeks road test review video! Thank you Krit for providing the review motorcycle! This time, I'm reviewing Suzuki's gen 1 GSX-1300R Hayabusa. When introduced in 1999, the Hayabusa was an incredible 15 mph faster than the previous king of speed, Honda's CBR1100XX Blackbird (which only outpaced the Kawasaki ZX-11 by a single mph)! In fact, the Busa was so fast that go...

There were two CBXs, two 1983 CB1100Fs, a 1969 CB750, a 1980 CB750F, and a 1981 CB900F. All of the bikes were in beautiful cosmetic condition. The owner gracious...

Improving Your Classic Motorcycle - Little Changes Make A Big Difference!
I had to pay the rent and it needed work. I love that bike.
My era of these bikes. They were the best ! My pick would be the same as yours. I had 3 of the 4 and the Suzuki was my favorite. I never had that Honda but had the CB900F sport bike. Great video, thank you!
Amazing bikes, I have a couple of FJ1200s and I had a mint XJ1100 a few years, sorely missed 😢
8:11 the laugh...😊😊
I had the same 1980 Honda 900 in the same red color and I loved it but it didn't like rain. Every time I got caught in the rain it drowned out and I would have to wait until it dried out to ride again. It's only flaw in my opinion and a very smooth riding bike. I rode it from Florida to Ohio and back once. Your video brought back memories. Thank you!
I just got ahold of a 81 GS650 as a barn find. It has the third party sissy bar and trunk on it. Can't wait to ride it... 🖖😎
Nice review . I bought an 86FJ1200 new and still riding it. Won't ever sell it. You described it pretty good 👍
Love watching your videos several times , takes me back to 1974 when as a youth I would cruise sometimes blast along the country roads in our beautiful British Lake District.
One thing the Japanese got right from that period and were superior to than most other brsnds is when fitted with stock chrome downpipes or headers they used to double skin them so they never discolourrd or turned blue as a rule anyway. Discoloured downpipes or headers is a pet hate of mine. I remember nearly all the British bikes discoloured their pipes as did BMW and many other brands as a result brand new bikes quite ofyen looked very secondhand sfter onlt a short number of miles.
The GS Suzukis from that period were really top notch motorbikes, Suzuki got it pretty much right. Thank God for men like you who bring them back to life and keep them alive.
I had a nearly new one and loved chasing round Europe for 40k miles. Hard luggage made it weave at high speed and the 4into 1 pipe I put on needed expensive re jetting. Loved it and only swapped it when I got a great deal on a zx6r. Fast , comfortable and cheap to run 😊
A great review. It was a pleasure to listen to. What’s more you nailed it!
Great review 👍🏻🍻👏🏻🎸
I'm 70 yrs old , rode bikes for a decade in my youth , till I could afford a car . Got over my mid life crisis with a 1985 Yamaha SJ 750 cop bike , then had an end of life crisis when the marriage broke up and found the bike of my dreams , 2010 Suzuki Bandit 1250s with 17,000 km on the clock and living the dream . Way more bike than I can utilize fully as reflexes and confidence not what it was . However I know the power is there ,and when I give her a squirt , I Crack a smile that does not go away . The sense of freedom is the same on a modern bike , but better. ABS , injected and I'll ride till hey take my license off me . New Zealand .
I have a 1980 GS1100LT, a one year wonder. Has the 16 valve TSCC engine and chain drive. Its a period correct beast
There is no way to use all that HP. But it is very cool.
79 XS1100 was my second street bike, loved it, put drag bars on mine as well. Went though 2 motors, finally traded it in for my dream bike a brand new 06 V-max. Which I will ride forever!
No doubt a great bike but for me its too ugly to live with in keeping with the modern bikes nowadays.
The six pot bikes sound great like the formula one multi cylindered cars before they went hybrid.
What a fantastic beautiful top quality motorbike, hard to believe it's age . To me its much more lovely to look at than Suzukis current bikes. Some of the new bikes are so damn ugly compared to the 70's and 80's models. Ugly seems to be the in thing nowadays save for a handful of retros ! Or maybe I'm just getting old lol, I'm 68 now.
Who does your OEM painting/pin stripping ?
I painted the side covers and did the pin striping on this one myself. I'm not a professional, but I was happy with the end result. If I have a bike re-painted, I'll take it to a professional. Cheers!
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Where did you get the factory pin strip tape?
I have painted many bike parts with "Colorite " paint and if you put many coats of clear on them they can be buffed out to a better finish then the factory
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I looking to have a Gs1000 painted to the Wes Cooley replica
@robertvitale5263 Very cool! Where are you located?
what a lovely sound❤
Right on!
Absolutely loved the video, thanks for putting it together - your work, expertise, and knowledge are appreciated! 👍 Those 85 mph speedos were good for a couple of shifts on a Liter Bike....🤷😂 That particular colorway FJ 1200 will be forever gorgeous! 😍 In a word, iconic.
I agree. Having been in my early 20's in 1986, the red & white FJ1200 was the symbol of ultra high performance road bikes. In the summer of 1986 I had a friend who was tearing through the Willmington Notch road in the Adirondaks Mtns of NY on his '85 FJ1100 on a daily basis. There were a lot of other guys at the time riding standard style Suzuki GS 2 valvers of varying displacements and a guy with an old Z1. None of those guys could stay with my friend on his FJ1100. I can still remember walking around it while it was parked and just being in awe of it. It looked fast even when it was standing still. Heady stuff in the summer of '86!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The 1980s was a great era for motorcycles. Cheers!
Right on! The FJ1100/1200 exudes effortless performance. It is in another league in terms of performance compared to the earlier generation of superbikes. Cheers!
🤩👍🇺🇸⚖️👁️👁️⚖️🇺🇸👍👍🏁🏁
That kick starter that went forward would give you a good rap in the shin, should your foot slip off the pedal. I did love my Super Hawk, though.
Ouch, I believe it! The Super Hawk is a truly iconic motorcycle. Cheers!
New subscriber , I love how the XJ looks w the faring. It does scream the 80’s but that’s what I like. Lol, beautiful bikes, I’ve been looking for something from this era.
Thanks for subscribing! Good luck in your search, there are so many great bikes to choose from that were produced In the 1980s. Cheers!
@ I think I may buy a 81 Sabre 750 I’m going to look at it tomorrow.
@bumstead1383 Nice! I've owned one previously. Hopefully, the one you're looking at won't need carb work. Good luck!
My first bike was a blue 1976 CB360T. Lots of good memories. It would be fun to ride one again. Perfect bike for putzing around town and for getting out on the 2-lane highways.
I agree! Those are great bikes for tooling around town and exploring the countryside. Cheers!
The FJ was part of me arc to only buy the most powerful bike I could afford at the time. I replaced it with a 2001 ZX9R, bought new.
Right on! Those are two great motorcycles. I loved my ZX-9R. Cheers!
I’ve always loved the FJ1200. It looks gorgeous and is probably the most comfortable bike I’ve been on. It just fit me well. It would be interesting to compare it to its “Mini Me” , the 550 Vision.
Right on! I've always thought the Vision was a cool-looking bike. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to ride one or even seen a running example. I will gladly feature one on this channel if I get the chance. Cheers!
Great video. I sure miss those days. Back in 82 I bought a new 1981 XS1100 standard model on sale for 3,600.00 They were getting ready for the new maxim models. I was living in South Africa at the time. I rode that bike cross country many times, from inland to the coast. Best long ride ever. 10 year later, living in New Hampshire USA I bought a used 1100 Maxim. Had that a few years. Nice bike, but I preferred the standard XS1100.
Right on!You were living the dream, riding across the country on your XS1100. They're great bikes, especially when used as the tourers they were designed to be. Cheers!
That XS1100 is just a beauty and looks like a great all around bike. You can tell a lot of evolution happened by the time the FJ1200 hit the streets.
Right on! You're right about the XS1100, and the FJ1200 was a fantastic step forward in terms of performance. Cheers!
In the 90s I took my xs1100 special to the isle of man and pushed it hard on TT course on mad Sunday......even then nobody got past me and only a super motard gave me trouble though the mountain. Poor handling , oh yes but ignore the wobbles and weave and it never gets completely out of control . One I wish I'd never sold , replaced with xjr 1300 that had lost the soul of the xs
Right on! It's a fun challenge to push a big bike a little in the corners. The Isle of Man is a bucket list trip for me. Cheers!
great but there was FJ 1100 first, i had one and i'm still owner of the FJ1200 - love it😊
Right on! The FJ1100 was a great bike, too. I owned one previously. Cheers!
Love the FJ
Right on, they're great bikes. Cheers!
My brother still has the '85 FJ1200 I had up to 25+ years ago. The reserve is on a relay/solenoid that fails. Don't know if you can get the relay and you wouldn't know unless you run onto reserve and it doesn't work. California spec ran far too lean, if you like it hot, head into town in full gear on an FJ1200 in a heatwave. They can be made to do 170 which is getting along ok on a classic. I don't miss the clunk into 1st from cold.
Right on! Thanks for sharing your FJ1200 experiences. Cheers!
Hi Jon, great bikes, bullet proof, I would route the clutch cable past the key on the xs1100 special, looks tidier. 👌
Right on! That's a great suggestion. Cheers!
It's funny what you forget. Watching this, I recall high siding an FJ1100, while in the Army, back in the early 90's. Once that rear end let go, at a decent lean angle, there was no saving it. Such a huge bike....so heavy. It, literally, just disappeared out of my hands, and off I went into the air. Thanks for the memories!
You're welcome, I think? Sorry the memories involve getting high-sided! Cheers!
I bought my 79 used in 1981 and had it for 3 years. She was a Great ride.
So cool! They are great bikes. Cheers!
The FJ 1200 is fast sitting still :)
Right on!
To be fair the Honda made the CB1000 in 1983 and would have faired better from a performance stand point. It's tough for a 900 to compete with the 1100's. I had the 1982 CB900F Super Sport. Loved that bike. Stock and near perfect. Wish I would have kept that one. All great bikes. Thanks for the video.
I agree, the CB1000 C may have done better, but I didn't have one to test. The CB900 F is a beautiful bike. I would love to own or at least ride one if I get the chance. Cheers!
i've driven the '83 xs1100, an amazing motorcycle. A truly wonderful ride. ;'0) M
Very cool! They are great bikes. Cheers!
Always loved the XJ. The up and down from the shaft drive when on the throttle was annoying at first but I got used to it. Thankfully never had a 2nd gear failure as some of this family of Yamaha engine commonly had.
I'm glad you enjoyed yours. They are fun bikes. Cheers!
I just love these videos. Thank you so much. I've commented before that my first bike was a 78 GS 400. To me, at the time it was stupid quick. Not fast. No real top end but crap it was so quick and nimble. But to be fair my comparison was an 85 4 spd. Chevette. Lol Plus I loved the kick start. Rebel without a clue. Lol. Thanks again.
Right on! It's funny how our perspectives change over time. I remember thinking the same thing about the first street-bike I rode, Honda's CB360. It could rev so high (compared to the cars I drove) and it felt quick 0-60. Good times!
As a teenager I had all the Cycle World, Cycle and Motorcyclist mags in my room. I learned how to ride sitting on my bed staring at my posters of Schwantz, Cooley, Roberts, Rainey and Spencer. My first bike was a 78 GS 400 THEN THE 86 CB 650 Nighthawk. Then the FJ 1200. I loved them all but the FJ was spectacular. Though I am a fan of the kick start. Just sold my GS 1150 G. 😢 Currently I'm running a 2012 FJ 1300 and I gotta say, it's very easy to get into speed trouble. Thanks for this channel. It fabulous.
You're welcome, Jimmy! Thanks for sharing your motorcycling experiences. You've owned some really nice bikes. Cheers!
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Thank you Jon. I grew up in MD used to ride into Gettysburg, York, and Carlisle. Up 270/40 and take some of the back roads. Beautiful countryside. I'm in SC now. The low country. Flat and boring 2 hrs to get to interesting roads. Thanks again.
@Jimmyschickenshack Very cool! I've ridden in the areas between York and Gettysburg - those are some beautiful roads! Hopefully, you live somewhat close to the ocean. Cheers!
I gotta disagree with you on the XJ1100 lol! That is a beautiful bike and I love that faring! I would take that off your hands any day! I guess it is because I grew up in the 80s lol!
Right on! The fairing design is definitely love it or hate it. I left it on just because of the 1980s quirkiness, and it functioned much better than most fairings of that era. Cheers!
My dad also worked at D&B Yamaha in the mid to late 80s. I was there on spring break with him and got to see one of the first Vmax and FJ1200s on their show room floor, as a 15 year old! I drooled over both of them but I think the Vmax was easily my favorite bike, just by how it looked! I unfortunately have never ridden one and am now 54 lol!
So cool! The V-Max was/is a beast. I remember going to the local motorcycle shops as a kid - truly magical. I rarely get that feeling going into the shops today. Cheers!
My dad was a mechanic at Maxey's Cycles in OKC back in the late 70s and early 80s. He put a turbo on a XS1100 for a customer. He said it was one of the few bikes that ever scared him. My dad was a motorcycle mechanic for decades and had rode a lot of bikes. Hearing him tell the story of getting on the express way in OKC the first time test riding that bike is hilarious! He passed away in November of last year. RIP Dad, I miss all your great stories!
Thanks for sharing your memories of your father. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
I got mine in 2005. it was stolen (probably to order) in 2009... the only thing I didn't like about it was the small tank capacity. it could do everything else perfectly and the relatively low BHP was offset by that amazingly tractable engine. I never found 'the limit' on the twisty bits and it could keep up with far more powerful bikes because it was so nimble incidentally: it arose from Honda's development test bed when they were designing the single sided swinging arm for the VFR series (the RC30). they used the engine from the Revere (which was shaft drive) and the engineers realised that in the end, they'd made a great bike. it was called the Bros in Japan and the Hawk in US and Canada... the export models had a few more of those really nice castings than the Japanese version a really great bike that could do everything well (except go touring two-up)
So cool! Thanks for sharing your Hawk experiences and insight. Cheers!
I own the model that replaced this bike, but was only produced for 1 year; a 2014 Honda CTX1300. Pretty much the same motor and same purpose. I've had it two years and I love it. Great machine. Sort of like a baby Goldwing.
@@Nygle123 Very cool! I have owned the CTX1300 previously. Cheers!
And they still run great and thanks to the internet parts are there...lol
@paulscountry456 Right on! The internet can be a real life saver on the classic bikes. Cheers!
