No it's not , it's about not being able to forgive one's self and letting the past define your identity. The God that Failed is about James Childhood in a Christian Science Household and watching his Mother die of Cancer as she wouldn't seek treatment due to her Religion. Same with Dyers Eve, but the Unforgiven Trilogy is the story of one's inability to attain forgiveness in themselves and number 2 is finding another who's is Unforgiven also and number 3 is going life alone still on that search .
It's crazy that initiallyJames didn't even want to be the singer but he did it and he is one of the most vocally animated singers. You can feel his words.
He’s the Front Man of all time. Other Front Men have to speak full sentences to the crowd to rile them up : “Are you ready?!?!” James Hetfield only has to say one word: “YEAH!”
It's amazing, isn't it? For me, it can take from a few minutes to a few months to fully grasp what a song is about. (But maybe I'm also a bit of a perfectionist.)
@@robert103515 Not on all older songs, no. He's already told us that he has heard some of these before, but it's either been years or he's never paid attention to the lyrics or seen the video, etc. This song ain't that hard to get, though. Thrash metal and heavy metal (the subgenre) in general, not that complex on the lyric department. (Simple doesn't equal bad, btw. I think it's good the world has both.)
Man, you never cease to amaze me on how quickly and accurately you figure out the meaning of lyrics. As many others have said you should do parts 2 & 3 now. 🤘🏻🖤
Thank you Knox for that breakdown…. As a Metallica fan I heard this song for thousands of times , but You have successfully pulled tears from my eyes for the third time in my life.. The first was in 1991 in my hometown in Saudia Arabia, I was 18 , the song hit me so hard I thought I was singing with tears, living the song 🥲 Metallica fanboy ever since. The second time was 2 weeks ago in the First Metallica concert in Riyadh , Saudia Arabia @50 years old. I was head banging for an hour , then this came on , I froze and stared with tears running down my face in the middle of 10k people , my daughter (17y) next to me stopped grooving , and shouted “what’s wrong daddy?!” I smiled at her and shouted “ everything is Right! ,, I will explain later!“ … I never did , I never could… until I saw this video. So thank you. This epic concert is on UA-cam, it shows how much we as a culture is evolving, might be worth a reaction. Forever a Knox Sub Adel Riyadh ,Saudi Arabia
It would be a blessing if you were to react to other 2 parts of Unforgiven, because of your fenomenal ability to understand the lyrics and because those other 2 parts have a great story that continues onto this song.Cheers bro, best of wishes to you!
This was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. And I didn’t understand a word back then. And later I never really thought about the lyrics. But now I realize how beautiful and profound they are. ❤ Thank you for dissecting this song! 😊
I just want to say, I have been watching your videos for about 2 years. you are probably my favorite reactor. you just get it. you dive deep into the lyrics, the symbolism, the video… and you always hit it on the head. you understand it so well-the reason why we all love these songs and artists
James is in my opinion one of the best songwriters ever because of the way he’s able to tell a story without directly just telling you Also this song is one of my personal favorites having had a similar upbringing to James having had very religious parents I can really connect to the message and feelings of the song that James is talking by about
Welllllll fuck. Ive loved this song since I was 14.... It took a Knox reaction and breakdown for me to understand exactly why it resonates so much. Damn knox you let me understand a song i didnt understand properly for 26 years
Having watched Part I, you are now obliged to watch Parts II and III. Wait until you hear the contrast between II and III. Really unexpected switch between those songs.
This song has 3 parts, part 2 is my favorite of the and was unironically my lullaby growing up. All I listened to as a kid was Metallica thanks to my dad. 😂🖤
I like all three parts, but the third is my personal favourite because I connect with its lyrics the most. I am the main architect of my own misery, there’s no one else to blame, but me myself and the world itself.
There is a second and third Unforgiven song as well. You should check out some of their stuff with the orchestra. Song are live but honestly it really is an amazing mix.
You really nailed it at the end with the religious imagery. James Hetfield's mother was a Christian Scientist. She didn't believe in science or medicine of any kind. And there's a really awful end to that as James' mother came down with cancer when he was a boy. But her beliefs were so strong that she never sought treatment. No chemo or anything. James essentially just watched his mother voluntarily wither away and die. James' upbringing really influenced a lot of his writing. You'll find several song in Metallica's catalog about a childhood gone really terribly.
Metallica also does an awesome job singing through their instruments. Kirk does a great job of melodically coming in with the pre solo than building up and up with the main solo. You can feel the emotions through the guitar work. One of the many things i love about this band.
i think Metallica - Fade to Black is a very good Song for your reaction... its a nice Song with great lyrics to help to figure out with depression and suicide...
Ain't gonna lie I love that you disect the meaning of the lyrics, music and the video. You did the same with Avenged sevenfold, Nightmare. Hit the nail on the head!
This was the first song heard at 1991 from Metallica, I knew they exists before but some reason I didn’t hear them before but after I heard this song they caught me forever.
Great reaction. I so love Metallica. I've been lucky to see them 5 times in Toronto. They are so incredible live it's ridiculous❤ Much love from Canada Knox❤🇨🇦
I was only lucky to see them live once. Way back in 1987. I'll never forget it. Me and my brother were allowed to go. We were up close too. It was just the most awesome experience 😎
Every time I hear this song, it just reminds me of growing up with my mom and my grandparents. Even still, they dedicate their lives to (trying to) running all of mine.
James Hetfield is from Downey California. My uncle and James went to the same high school. James graduated a year before my uncle around 1978 I think from a different high school.
Metallica have many different styles of music, but most of it lyrics and music connected together!!! “Dyers Eve” is a good song talk about James childhood.
First video I see from you, really enjoyed it. The unforgiven was the first Metallica song that I truly loved, I was only like 10yo when my older brother got the cassette, and I remember I kept asking him to rewind the cassette so that I could hear the song once again. English isn't my native language, so at that time I could not pronounce "unforgiven" so I only told him "put the one that isn't 2" 2 meaning unforgiven II.
Knox your reactions are so good man! The way you break things down so well and makes me think about things from a different perspective is what keeps me coming back!
Oh yey, Metal Mondays! A good reason to get up this morning! You have to do Unforgiven II and Unforgiven III at some point, they continue the story of the same character (and finish it). Just a random FYI: Metalheads tend to assign each subgenre The Big Four - four bands that sort of "define" the subgenre, that are the GOATs that other bands take influence from. And, like, if you've heard something from all four, then you have a pretty good grasp on what that subgenre sounds like as a whole. We do debate on who qualifies for each Big Four, though, it's not always clear cut.
definately nailed the first rule of the guitar solo...the second is that if you do happen to accidentally or purposely stop it, thou shalt return to the beginning of it.
Love this song! Also there is an unforgiven II as well. ❤your reactions my guy. Would love to see you get into some Ice Nine Kills soon! Keep up the good work!
This song is about James's childhood and being raised in a super religious household. You need to check out #2 and #3 as well to finish out the story
Another great (but sadly underrated) track about James' religious household is "The Cure"
@@Tommy-he7dxDamn I always sleep on ‘The Cure’ now I’m going to listen to it right now.
@@kingklash666 a bit more angrier, that one.
I hope he does watch them. 2 and 3 are tied for my favorite Metallica song.

Four words; Much more Metallica, please 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Knox, ya nailed it by the end of the first chorus. The constraints were religion. James had a very strict upbringing.

I'm confused by these comments. I'm versed in sarcasm but I'm confused .
Your adorable. I gotta mute you and react by your facial expression
When heavy metal makes a ballad and nails it 1000%

Loved this song since it came out ✌️🫶 luv ya Professor
One of my favorite songs by Metallica, glad to see a Knox breakdown🤙Stay safe my man
now to do the other two parts as this is a trilogy (unforgiven, unforgiven 2, unforgiven 3)
Hell yes Knox! I've missed Metal Mondays!
The pop and K Pop definitely isn't my thing.

Unforgiven II is a masterpiece as well.
