      I've owned Jaguars since my early twenties and continue to own and maintain more than one. I've always said they each had their own soul and you don't get that when you buy an Asian car as they were actually soul-less. Jaguars are special ...that's coming from a guy who's owned half-dozen different Porsches a dozen different Mercedes a dozen different BMWs and so on.

  • @man_on_wheelz
    @man_on_wheelz 5 років тому +32

    Yet another car this guy has introduced that I've driven briefly while working at a Lincoln dealership. One of my favorites indeed, everything about this car just feels right to me. The wood on the steering wheel, the smoothness of engaging that little wooden shift lever, the effortlessness but affirmativeness of turning the wheel, being surrounded by wood throughout the interior, all the thin metal panels and pillars, the uncommon short roof line, all this combined just makes for... how can I explain it... the car feels like you're driving a fancy and expensive mechanical watch. I would love to see what it's like to spend some measurable, practical time with one of these. You know, night driving, highway driving, city driving, carrying passengers etc.

    • @YOLOnyc
      @YOLOnyc 5 років тому +8

      MAN_ON_WHEELZ ah, yes, indeed you get it! It's remarkably difficult to verbalize the feelings this Jag instills when behind the wheel.

Some roads have become impassible so people living locally have figured out how to avoid hem all together.

    The Vanden Plas is the long wheelbase, which is why he can slip into the rear seat so easily. -- On the downside: longer turning radius = no U-turns.
    It's a _very_ comfortable care.
    I had a 1991 and in 17 years of driving (not counting windshield wipers, tires and brakes) only had to replace one hose, the steering box and one tail light bulb after about 340K miles.
    The worst thing was remembering to switch on the cruise control, otherwise I'd find myself sailing along at nearly 100 mph, because there was no sensation of speed, just floating along serenly in total control.

    • @624radicalham
      @624radicalham 5 років тому +1

      340k on a 1991 Jaguar with no major repairs? That is absolute bullshit Sir and you know it. The 91s were notorious for massive problems.

    • @carnaturelovers7072
      @carnaturelovers7072 10 місяців тому

      The Inline 6 is renowned as a very reliable and strong engine. You are likely thinking of the V12, but its obvious with double the cylinders you will have double the maintenance & potential major repairs down the line especially if not maintained correctly in the first place which with the V12 it costs much more than the 6. More issues arise with it being a rarer car and parts being hard to find and/or discontinued.@@624radicalham

      My '02 3.6 X308 has served me brilliantly for 8 years. Apart from tyres and a battery, the only cost outside routine servicing was for one single lonely coil. I've had 17 Jags since '84 and had mechanical problems with one. I'm sick of the Merkel Metal freaks slamming Jaguar reliability. They are as good as any make and far more pleasant to drive than soulless German boxes. In the part of Blighty where I live, BMWs are lovingly described as "drug dealer wheels."

    Almost everyone says : the maintenance of a jaguar is very expensive, to replace parts is hell, you'd need to have a repair shop with you. All of this is not true, Especially this jaguar from this period are very reliable, the 4.0 V8 is very strong and durable. The key to a jaguar is : find a jaguar that is well maintained and loved by the previous owners. some particular parts are expensive, but they last for a very long time if you maintain it well. To replace parts is not that of a hell (maybe if you are used to simple american v8 cars only), you need a good bridge, and the right tools for it, its reasonable easy to do. my brother has an XJ8 sovereign, it has 520.000 KM on the clock, and it purrs still very satisfying

      Yes it was designed by ford that's why it had bad engine with plastic parts lol

    • @eldorado111
      @eldorado111 5 років тому +6

      No... actually had an engine by Cosworth, highly engineered and virtually bullet proof. Came with a timing chain instead of belt however chain tensioners do need to be monitoredif not changed out these days. Nikasol bore coating with small capacity, high flow coolant system means these cars get to optimum operating temp quickly and will never wear out their bores. Ford threw so much money at these things it was ridiculous. Go back two generations before this car and Ford made 1200 running changes to the XJ40 when it bought Jaguar, in 1989 or 90 I think, purely to get the reliability sorted - these are known as a very good car. The next model, x300, is similar to this (x308) but with 6cyl engines. Again, bullet proof and also included a supercharged version. Plastics? Don't know where you get that idea from. They were using free-range leather, double stitching and matched wood veneers. Jaguar's biggest problem at the time? Their clientelle were dying.. of old age. They had the oldest customer demographic of any manufacturer. No choice in the end but to try and move away from the classic designs to something edgier, which they have finally done. The XF's and in particular F-Type set the new direction for Jag. Tata control is good also as it's purely financial with virtually no interference. Cool cars. If you don't care what others think and don't need the validation of a German marque, you drive a Jag and reap the rewards many will never know about. ;-)

    • @V8_screw_electric_cars
      @V8_screw_electric_cars 5 років тому +2

      Well those plastic chain tensioners are notorious for breaking I wouldn't call that bulletproof, previous generation X300 with straight 6 and V12 now those were bulletproof.

    • @YOLOnyc
      @YOLOnyc 5 років тому

      Ian Sloan actually capacity is not really that large due to lack of height, there's lots of floor space with a very large trunk lid so loading/unloading is very easy, but it's only about 12" to 16" tall (it tapers towards the rear.) My trunk is even more cramped as I've got a big 12" subwoofer in the trunk too.

    Some good insights on the X-308 series XJ (1997-20003). I'm on my third and I will not make the mistake of selling this one. There are whispers that this series is going to be legendary, running well for hundreds of thousands of miles if you take care of it and don't drive it in snow (the salt is deadly).
    My 2001 XJR is more nimble than the VDP due to its shorter wheelbase. And it has mechanical suspension, not air, and its wheel size (18") and super-high performance tires (rated at 150 mph, which the car will do) still manages to deliver a nice ride. Your point about the VDP's smaller wheels and bigger tires is right on. But rest assured any X-308 model has that dreamy ride yet doesn't wallow in corners.
    If you want a genuine shock, test drive a new-generation XJ sometimes. It's brutal, at least the supercharged model. The ride will shake your fillings out. And this big-wheel epidemic is now rampant in the luxury car world. I'm reading in the car mags that even the newly refreshed big Rolls, with enormous wheels and rubber-band tires, just can't deliver the velvety ride of old. All for style!
    And another thing that makes this a good New York car: people on the street recognize Jags and like them. (We're hearing stories about Ferraris stopped at traffic lights being spat on by the non-one-percenters.)
    Another positive is the superb outward visibility, due to its big greenhouse and vertically-oriented windows. (Compared with other cars' front and rear windows.)
    The supercharger gives the car excellent driveability due more to its torque than its horsepower, but it sucks down the premium and no amount of conservative driving can change that. You're looking at 15 mpg city and 21 highway. On the other hand, I found my normally aspirated 1998 XJ I owned to be low on torque and had to drive in Sport mode all the time. The supercharger in this luxury car is not for drag racing and you'll snap the rear diff if you use it as such.
    Every year of the X-308 series, Jaguar produced only a handful -- 250 -- Vanden Plas Supercharged models for the world market. I found one on Craigslist, bought it for a song, and then the following year when I was a bit broke I made the idiotic mistake of selling it. I will never get over selling that car.

I now have an x350 handles great but you feel bumps!

    Had the 2000 XJ8. Paid nine grand for it when it had 64,000 miles on it. You really need to see the faux wood trim against black leather. That's the ultimate look. Man, those wheels looked amazing after a wash. You may know these models had iffy transmissions, and I had to put a rebuilt in mine, for about 5 grand. But that brought me up to 14 grand. Aside from the usual maintenance, insurance, and tires, and considering I had the ride for about 6 years, the car cost me just less than 200 bucks a month. (14,000 divided by 72) Why did I sell? Insurance , parking, and gas was about 600 a month. Plus, it was going to need timing chains, of which I believe it had about 5. (they say change 'em every 100,000) So, I said goodbye to the dream. But have plenty of pics and movies taken in and of it....I got to drive a Jag for six years, and take it all the way down the California coast on Highway 1. By myself, with my tunes, and no one blabbering at me.
