How could you NOT LOVE getting lots of cool, new workout equipment to test out? There's no real need to go to a commercial gym with the wide variety of equipment you've accumulated. Your videos have convinced me that it's an absolute requirement that my next house have a decent sized space that I can turn into my dream home gym.

This is true sometimes. I'm testing / showing, so you guys don't have to. Many things get donated or given away. As a side point it's actually hard to actually give stuff away. A lot of donation sites don't take exercise equipment. While I always only review things I'm interested in, not everything is long term winner. But then there's things that start to grow on me over time that I fall back to.

Great location Mike, hope you’re getting some downtime wherever you are! Working out can be addictive - it’s a lot of fun and a stress reliever. I didn’t realize just how much time I used to spend travelling to the gym, getting changed, doing a workout, waiting on machines, benches etc… finishing the workout with a shower, driving home.
Often times I’d be out of the house for about 1.5-2 hours at a time. My wife commented recently that one of the things that she really likes about having a home gym is that it is much more family friendly and we get to see more of each other. I can imagine that if you have kids, spending time in the gym and travelling etc… when you can distill those results into a 30 mins intensive session at home, then you aren’t taking 2 hours away from your kids when they need you. I think that’s important especially for those that have families as we get older. My 0.02.

Thanks Tom. I know a lot of people will say that going to the gym really isn’t that time-consuming, but I totally agree that little bit of time each way not to mention all the other variables along with it can take valuable time away from loved ones.

After almost 15 months on my Total Gym Fit Ultimate, there's no way I would consider going back to the gym to work out; I still play racquetball 2x/week there. I just don’t have the time to get "gym dressed", commute, parking (a bitch at my LA Fitness), waiting around for machines, dealing with sweat/germs, etc. Very grateful that I found this channel, found an unbelievable deal on Marketplace for my Total Gym, and for sticking with it for this long. Slide strong! 💪

Haven't been to a gym ( except hotels when travelling) for 20 years. Absolutely love training from home. My gym is my happy place albeit small I have plenty of equipment to not get bored and improvising is part of the fun. I understand people's need for socialising but it's also distraction for me personally. Each to their own I suppose. Cheers, enjoyable topic...

Home gym crew checking in. We had almost 2 years of lockdowns here so I built my home gym in 2020. Started in my garage, moved to my basement, then moved to a new larger house in January 2024. Likely will never go back to a commercial gym. 6 days a week @ 56 yrs old.

I started working out in my basement in November. January I decided to get meticulous about my nutrition and use a band/bar/board system exclusively for 12 weeks to see what I could do. Today was the start of my 12th week and I'm a total convert now. I plan to upgrade my bar and board (already upgraded the bands because one broke) and will probably never go to the gym again. I love the convenience of rolling out of bed in the morning and going downstairs to work out. I'm not concerned about how much I'm "lifting" compared to others anymore. I'm now in the 16% body fat range from just staying consistent with my exercise and diet. Nearing the best shape of my life and close to my original goal (15% body fat by April). I think that if anyone is interested in a home gym then they should experiment with low cost ideas first to see if they will stick with it but it's absolutely worth it for me.
Edit: Forgot to mention I also like how I'm done in an hour tops including "set up".
Edit 2: I also like that I now find that I'm not making excuses to "not work out today".

Like you, I started my home gym stuff during the pandemic, and I invested so much time/money into it that I didn't feel a need to come back once things opened up. The only stuff I really miss are really specific machines, heavy lifting (getting too old for that anyway) and not feeling anxious if I accidentally drop a weight during a set.
Plus, the gyms I used to frequent have a lot of people filming now. Any interest I had in coming back dies off with those people anyway.

Great points. I had a whole part in here about the “modern gyn culture“ but took it out for the sake of time. I’m probably just getting older, but it is definitely a different scene out there now. Of course I can’t judge people for filming themselves while working out.

I started dabbling in working out and going to a local gym in my late teens for about 3 years and by the time I knew I wanted fitness in my life, I invested in home equipment. I started working out from home consistently and my efforts and results were always directly related to the amount of effort, logic, and consistency I would apply. I went back to a local gym after about 7 years of working out at home. I went to this particular gym for about 4 years, it was a great experience, if anything it built social connections, confidence, a sense of community etc. The equipment was plentiful, but I would end up sticking to certain equipment after establishing a certain routine for a while. Finally, I returned to a home gym after re-investing in equipment for the past 4 years. I would have to say my success is definitely on a foundation of consistency. Now, with the knowledge I acquired online, in person at the gym, through channels like this one, I learned to apply science and mindfulness to my home workouts. This allows me to always show up and making it count. Thanks Mike for sharing as always! There is a great sense of community here as well!

Very cool topic and insights. Great points all around. Of course when I was competing and training heavy, it had to be the gym. Plus socializing with the Pros and my peers was a definite social plus. Now, especially after the pandemic closed my virtually private gym, I am getting spoiled at home, with never having to wait for equipment, or compromise my programs. Since not training heavy anymore due to debilitating injuries, I can get by with bands, suspension trainer, 55 lb Nordick DB's, Bullworker, and bodyweight. Most of my training involves Biplexes, Triplexes, and Quadplexes, with a treadmill for good measure. Seeing you in that beach scene wants me to have Happy Hour with you and talk shop.

My ideal workout situation would be a home gym with a belt squat machine, leg press, lever gym and wall mounted pull up bar for assisted chin ups and to attach a $30 cable pulley system for lat pulls and rope face pulls for rear delts. I am trying to wean away from the gym but love the energy at EOS gym. If you haven’t been to one, I highly recommend it, it’s only 10$ a month for me and they have about 10 squat racks with indoor and outdoor turf areas. They also have the sauna pool and jacuzzi I have yet to ever try. They play a new movie every day also in the dedicated cardio/theatre room. It’s total steal I find myself coming back to just to spend time there but don’t really make progress towards any real hyper trophy goals. Those goals I fine find are easier to pursue with a home gym situation where I’m not running around the gym like a chicken without a head using free machines trying to Frankenstein a workout.
    TLDR: commercial gym for environment
    Home gym for hypertrophy goals
    Thank you SBT

Over the past year I've started to take personal fitness more seriously, I discovered loop style bands and calisthenics. I have a small corner of my home that I dedicated to a "gym" and I've been good about getting 2 to 4 workouts per week. I've never gone to a commercial gym because I felt like I didn't have time and didn't want to waste money on something I wasn't going to use. That said I can definitely find time to do 30 to 45 minutes in my home gym, it's just making myself do it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You do have a wide range of equipment for your garage gym, which makes many of us envious. Having a range of equipment for the home gym trainer is important, as you have mentioned getting stale/bored with the same routine, etc. That is something I have embraced as well. I am also intrigued about the lever gym, as it seems versatile. However, does it have enough range to offer decline benching?
Since the lockdown, I have stayed with my "home" gym, and have added several pieces, including the "sliding bench trainer". With that, I may go back to the gym, but for now, I am satisfied with my home-based workouts.

Not trying to get super jacked or anything just want to focus on general health and fitness. I have a pair of Lebert Equalizers and thinking of making that more of a long term thing I will use for strength training after dropping some weight. Would be cool if you get around to those someday. Since Covid happened, I started to learn about resistance bands and suspension trainers, and haven't returned to the gym. I love the way the bands make me feel.
