Back then reporters were similar to police detectives in many ways. And they were much more vulnerable.

Yes it was a time that reporters were actually investigating and reporting what their findings were. Today we have dressed up nodding parrots reading from a script written by their employers. Money rules.

Investigative reporters and journalists are still being taken out today. With our short attention spans, news of suicide or accidental death barely get noticed. My heart goes out to Molly and all of those who dare to expose truth for justice.

Doesn't make sense that Molly would disappear on her own--she is too responsible and dedicated both to the Spectator and her career in investigative journalism. What a shame that the mob took her. A dark stain on American culture and history.

As the guy who is working on the book on the Molly mystery, I should share some info.
First the podcast on the Molly story is being produced by Greg Peerbolte, executive director of the Joliet Area Historical Museum. He is planning 8 chapters, which are done. He is now setting up a venue for sharing the podcast to the public.
I have created a Facebook page to share some Molly details and will give more details on the podcast when I can.
To learn more about the mystery and to read the 1978 series I did with friend and fellow reporter John Whiteside go to the Facebook page: facebook.com/MollyZelkoMystery/
Like the page and follow it. The larger the audience the better my chances of getting Joliet law enforcement to care. You can also post questions on the page and I will try to answer them.
After reading the comments posted here, I would also note a few things.
The witness did not go to the police because many were a direct pipeline to the local Mob figure Francis Curry. “Sarah” was terrified, which was clearly visible 21 years later when we found her.
She has never been identified but my book will detail how we found her and who she was. She also was not the only source who pointed to Stryker Avenue in Joliet as a likely spot to search for Molly’s body.
Molly still has family living in Joliet. They have been helpful and supportive in my efforts.
There is no one left to prosecute in this case, but the family and the Joliet area community still need closure. As do I.
Anyone who has information to share can reach me at lonnyjcain@gmail.com.

I lived in Joliet for two years, many years ago. I had a neighbor at the time-an old truck driver-who would talk about this case. He seemed to be convinced she had gotten involved with the mafia, and then something happened and she was likely murdered for some reason over money. All speculation on my old neighbor’s part of course.

Another very interesting case I never heard of. I do know that back then, mobsters would dispose of anyone who refused their machines. Many reporters have ended up dead or disappeared. I think the next reporter after this one was Dorothy Kilgallen, but her murder was totally different. With her, they used the old "overdose" game.

I drive down Stryker Ave on a regular basis which has now taken on an extra element. I hope we will be able to find her someday. With ground penetrating radar, checking out the area along Stryker Ave should be feasible in a non-invasive way which wouldn't have been possible back in 1978. Has anyone tried it?

Back in either the 1930s ish my grandmother lived in Joliet with her uncle and her father. They were contractors in Joliet mysteriously my great-grandfather by the last name of Caulkins disappeared allegedly under suspicious circumstances. Several years back I spoke with mr. Whitehead from the paper who pulled up newspaper articles and ran a story on this case but never went anywhere.

    • @paulforman2280
      @paulforman2280 5 років тому +1

Thank you for the like on the story. As I mentioned at one point in time I had enlisted the services of a reporter by the last name of Whiteside and he did quite a bit of digging as well as ran a article on this particular crime in a Sunday edition and this was probably 15 years ago give or take. However nothing came out of the article, no one step forward with any information to help us go any further. If you have a chance do a little research on this story it's very interesting the phone lines were cut to the house, some personal effects of the missing man I believe was a pair of cufflinks with a bloody handkerchief showed up a week later on the front door step. Ironically The Nanny disappear as well 😂. But I truly is a very interesting story to say the least, the house still stands where the incident took place. the house is not in a very good part of the city at this point, the family believes that he was probably under some foundation of a building they were working on at the time. It definitely is a mystery, wrapped inside of a riddle, wrapped inside an enigma. I'd love to truly find out what happened, unfortunately too many years have passed. Thank you again for your interest in the story I think it was pretty cool when my grandmother relayed the information about this, and unfortunately she has since died sobasically all I have to work with is what I was told and what the reporter Whiteside had managed to dig up which was actually quite a bit. Have a great day thanks

It also seems that she had turned a blind eye to the real possibility of harm from some very dangerous people, that wouldn't hesitate to use any means to silence her. His family or her reporting? Median family income in 1956 was $4000 a year, and I did look it up a while back for reasons related to my own family history. $55 a month in the private rental market probably was a typical rent in a middle income neighborhood.

What kind of conversation includes if your being attacked you will take off your shoes and run? Who was she talking to when she said that? And most importantly why would she say such a thing? Whomever she was telling this to knows more than they are saying. I mean why would she even be talking about such a subject? How does that conversation go...I'm having meat and potatoes for dinner oh by the way if I'm ever being attacked I'm going to take my shoes off and run. How do you work that into general conversation? Just doesn't make sense.

It's actually hard to find quality content, along the lines of heavy C. Horror stories is an excellent channel, as is criminally listed but, I've seen 'em all!
We need new murder and more horror, craftily-presented, and more often.

I wonder if her family had ever heard about Sarah's account. I would think they would have paid to have that area excavated. In fact, I'm surprise someone hasn't done it by now or at least got someone to do ground premating radar.

I spent a lot of time in Joliet because my friend lived in the apartments on the corner of Oneida St and Jefferson. You have to have your head on a swivel 24-7 there. I had someone try and sneak up on me as I was walking to my friends door. I was lucky enough hat she had the door unlocked because she knew I was coming because when I got in, turned around, and went closed the door there was a man running away. I had her cousin walk me in and out after that. I've also witnessed a gun being pulled out on a guy in her alley way because he was so messed up he kept telling his "friend" it was 6 am and he was going to be late for work (it was 6 pm btw). His "friend" pushed him up into the fence then pulled the gun out and said "If youre that f*ed up I should just rob your ass right now!". The man started crying and came up to us sitting in her cousin's Cadillac and asked up what time it was! Here we are; four white kids, in a car consoling this big black guy because he thought he was going to miss work.

During entrance via Ellis Island. Many sir names were misspelled due to communication barriers.
Hence. Different spelling and pronounciation. Of course many too changed their spelling to sound more American. The US on the end of Columbus and Stratevarious was also added for similar reasons.
