  • in 1933, joe halpern was a brilliant doctoral candidate studying astronomy at the university of chicago. that august, he took a break from work and school to travel out west with his family and a friend to spend some time outdoors. he was doing something he loved--hiking--when he mysteriously disappeared, and created a mystery that three generations of halperns have spent more than 85 years trying to solve.

    The family’s description of Joe sent to Arizona is fascinating. “Is a good chess player”, “usually goes without a hat”. A snapshot of the norms of 1933.

      Always pray to Jesus, as to whether or not, you should go on any trip, that you have planned. In the Word of God, it says in Proverbs 27:1, in the English Standard Version: “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”

      @@JosephKulik2016 respectfully, I disagree. Joe was born around 1911, meaning that he was still a young boy when WWI ended. Many people today do not realise what a horrific war that was, with casualties unimaginable in the present time. It was very common for the families of the dead or missing in action never to know where their sons were buried. There were so many whose only knowledge amounted to "somewhere in France." Joe no doubt had knowledge about the pain that the families of the vanished go through.
      Additionally, this was the height of the Great Depression (when unemployment rates were even higher than have yet happened in the US during the pandemic so far). Jobs were scarce and prized--academia probably looked pretty darn cushy during that time.

      HearthCricket make sure that there is adequate cell/data service everywhere you go.
      I live in Arizona. Beyond the hand-full of cities and major roads, most of Arizona has NO cell service. Can’t even utilize any low bandwidth services such as text. One can easily find themselves 100 miles from any service and still be on an improved (even paved) road. Let alone hiking away from the road.

    • @robertnichols2283
      @robertnichols2283 4 роки тому +9

      Regina Lawson Indeed. When I heard her say that, at two in the afternoon, Joe was wanting to keep going instead of turning around, my heart sank.
      Where I live, in the Phoenix area, there’s some scenic, rugged, fairly difficult hiking right in the heart of the city. And it’s amazing how often people have to be rescued at night because they started, or turned around, too late in the day. How lucky these rescuees are that they are in the middle of a city with good cell service and rescue only minutes away.
      If/when I hike alone: whatever the allotted time period is that day, I turn around before half of that time period has passed. I also turn around when at 1/3 of my water is gone. Not to mention staying on well traveled trails if I’m alone.

In this case I guess its possible Halpern actually wanted to appear lost so he could do something else in his life. Although it doesn't seem his life was so terrible he wanted to leave it behind. This was one of the saddest of these stories. It was well told. My heart aches for the parents of all these missing, their loved ones who spend a lifetime hoping to hear something. Certainly, if there is a responsible party, it is pitiless and without a heart, to be unmoved all these years and all these people. What is always amazing about these disappearances is that there are often over the years several disappearances and searches in these parks, and it might be expected that in the initial search the remains of someone might be overlooked, but in the many other searches bodies might be found from previous disappearances. I guess people are always looking at the bottom of the glaciers to see what eventually is expelled.

    I'd say there are two possibilities:
    First is that Joe perished in the wilderness by some sort of unfortunate incident, perhaps he fell off a cliff while hiking, or took a wrong turn, and got lost. The second, and I believe more likely scenario in this particular case, is that an unhappy Joe decided to disappear on purpose, and start a new life. This corresponds much better with those letters and what Joe told his friend privately, and the sighting of him reported later on the street begging. Perhaps he meant to reconnect with his family eventually, but maybe died before he could do so, while living the tough existence of being a hobo/transient back in those times.

    Although it seems more likely that he fell into a crevasse and perished in the wilderness it wasn't uncommon at that time for young men to ride the rails seeking work, adventure, and anonymity. It would have been VERY difficult for anyone to get down the mountain he was hiking to the trailhead at Bear Lake and THEN get down the steep, winding road to any park entrance on the east side, especially in the dark. If he tried to avoid the roads, coming down through the forests and underbrush would be extremely hazardous and would have taken a long time to do so, no matter where he may have tried to exit. It's very rugged wilderness. He's still in RMNP, somewhere.

    I grew up at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park at the bottom of the Big Thompson Canyon. I know the park he went to so well my girl scout troop would go up there twice a year to clean trash. If he fell into the glacier they will never find him. And then there is always the mountain lions, the coyotes, the wolves and the Bears to worry about. Not to mention the fact if he came face-to-face with a ram he would have had his head bashed in. I have a feeling one day they will find one of his bones scattered across the forest or they will find him stuck in a crevice like the story said. I remember them pulling bodies out of the park as a child. And sometimes those bones would be over a hundred years old. It is extremely easy to get lost in Rocky Mountain National Park. And the temperatures drop drastically at night. And as high up as they were an altitude he may have gotten altitude sickness and died. There are so many caves and crevices and just drop-offs all over these mountains there is no telling where he could be. I hope and pray that they do find his body and are able to DNA match it to his family so that they may have some closure.

    I think 99.9% of the time, wilderness disappearances involve accidents and death. and, as we know, personal sightings are usually as accurate as eye witnesses to crimes so it's unlikely he had amnesia and was on the streets. It's an interesting historical piece, though, and I hope his family does get answers if at all possible.

      I’ve never been interested in conspiracy theories. The Missing 411 is just a conspiracy theory. The US has 62 protected areas of national parks. Alaska alone has 8 million acres in national parks. The total area of protected national parks is around 53 million acres. That is a lot of land and when you think about much of the criteria for national parks to be natural beauty, unique terrain etc., it’s no wonder so many people get lost. I don’t think aliens are abducting smart people from national parks or that the Soviets/Russians, Chinese, CIA etc are either or that these people went missing to enter the CIA. It seems more logical to me that incredibly brilliant people find many things very easy but outside academia, they might be less prepared for an evening hike than the 8th grade drop-out living near the park who fishes for his dinner. That’s the most logical explanation to me.

    One does not just wander out of RMNP from deep inside the park. He was already at a very high elevation in the wilderness. To get down off the mountains and then make it through and out of the park in the dark, or even in daylight, AND THEN make it to a major city where he could disappear from family or friends would be quite a feat. I guess he could hitchhike out of the park, once he got down off the mountains, and beyond, but someone still probably would have come forward if they had seen him hitchhiking, especially while still in the park. There aren't that many roads and maybe fewer in the 1930s.
