    Was anyone else just mesmerized by the tape moving around in the top of that thing and thinking “please don’t get tangled”

    • @priceamp
      @priceamp 4 роки тому +1

      What a great concept/design to just let the tape machine reel out and naturally reel back the tape without the slight drag of a second pick up reel. It took me awhile to realize what was going on with the tape. I assume the clear plastic cover over the tape is just tall enough to let the tape move but to keep it from not following out and then get tangled up. Did you notice the dance floor the tape slides on is of slippery metal? Similar to no pickup reel, minimize drag on the tape. Smart design.

    Just so there's no room for doubt: the RE-201 is "in lovely fine fettle" because it just came out of our workshop before going to Roland! These machines are indeed old, but with the right care and attention they don't need to be cronky or break down - and they can sound this good :D

    The RE-20 is the closest to the real thing when it comes to tape echo pedals. Even if it is a Boss which drives away some snobby people. (So many big names use it live: Josh and Troy from QUOTSA, Johnny Greenwood, Brent Hinds, Brad Paisley, Hans Magnus Ryan, Pete Thorn, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jamie Cook, Anton Newcombe just to name a few...) After trying the Wampler Tape Echo, the Strymon El capistan, TC Flashback, Line 6 DL4, Catalinbread Belle epoch, Dunlop Echoplex, Strymon Timeline, Boss DD-20 and the Ibanez ES-2, I have to say that for live situation none of these do the job better than the Boss RE-20. The only weakness is the Reverb setting but the echo modes are fantastic, warm and tape-like.... scuse me for the long comment :)

      Sorry for the delayed reply, I am a little late to the party.
      It amazes me that people get put off because of BOSS. I have been playing for around 9 years. I have played many amplifiers and pedals but always go back to BOSS. I used to have a Blues Junior, and the a Marshall, I then fancied the ROLAND BLUES CUBE. Because it claimed to sound like a tube amplifier and loved the output feature. And to be honest, the cube blows the others out of the water.
      "If it sounds good, it is good."
      Should never listen with your eyes.

      You had me doubting my system.
      I just went through it on different interfaces with a sig gen and test material.
      I reckon something in the recording process or in YT's processing (EDIT Scratch that. YT doesn't usually hurt The Stereo picture) has Summed to Mono somewhere.
      Or something along those lines.
      I couldn't get any "Space" from the Dimension D.

    I have an RE-301 Chorus Echo. It is the only vintage piece of gear I own and it's useful for the producers that want a tape loop to create lo-fi mono submixes. It sounds amazing as a standard tape delay. The chorus is actually very mellow and subtle and works really well with synth parts.

I have an SDE-3000 Delay and recently got a 80's Boss Ce-300 Super Chorus, only because I have a SDE-3000 delay. Matt's hunch and summary using his ear and musical intelligence was spot on. I read that the DD chorus has two seperate BBD delay paths, slow LFO rates, a square-ish wave, less overt modulation, and a lush stereo width. Another timely show guys. cheers

    Around 30min mark when Matt is playing with the Dimension D there's no difference in the recorded sound for us, we can't hear the effect, only when the camera mic comes in a bit can we hear it. As they switch through the preset buttons there's no difference in recorded sound. I'm sure they were hearing it as the camera mic does give a bit of chorusing sound. Am I right, did the recording point come from somewhere that doesn't include it?

    Mick what Stratocaster is that? Looks like a very unique darkly tanned shade of wood there and relic'd - what a beauty!

    Seeing the top of the Space Echo makes my anxiety go insane thinking that tape is gonna tangled up. What a piece of engineering. Does the tape ever get tangled up on one of those?

    • @Soundgas
      @Soundgas 6 років тому

      That's how it works - the tape tray holds the tape safely, but loosely so it can move. More reliable than a cartridge, and less wear than with a short loop so it doesn't have to be changed so often. You can see how to change a tape here: ua-cam.com/video/sIMzGh7Ign0/v-deo.html

      @Soundgas 6 років тому

      Tape can get tangled if the unit's not been set up right, or getting dirty (or using the wrong type of tape!)

    I had a RE-20. I liked it for a while, but after a while the self-oscillation just got to seem very samey - I'm not sure if I can explain better than that - it just felt like it was the same every time, like a digital copy. I've never used a real Space Echo, but it was never like that with my Echoplex EP4. I ended up selling the RE-20 and getting an El Capistan for, which is waaaay better. Sounds every bit as good as the Echoplex on self-oscillation, and a lot more versatility. This was mostly for DJing/studio production BTW.

      Yes, that's what we found too. Not tried the El Capistan, but heard good things. Foxpedal's The Wave has a good RE-201 emulation, Binson and Echoplex, but what really sets it apart is how it sounds when you're dubbing into oscillation - it really sounds good: ua-cam.com/video/fP9QTiCO49o/v-deo.html

      That wash button looks pretty cool. Be interested to try one someday, but for the moment pretty set with my Echoplex in the studio and El Cap for taking around. I swear I'm not employed by Strymon, but I also really love their Deco pedal which emulates dual tape machine doubletracking (from short delays to zero-through flanging) and tape saturation.

    There is something oddly satisfying watching the tape curl into the top then be fed back in so neatly.

    Some nostalgia there. I had a RE-201 in the eighties. Thank God I'm not lugging that thing around anymore. Such good small pedals nowadays available. Nice vid though and Matt has the chops and licks.

    I think the Sensor is the Two-Rock with a tube-buffered effects loop. Want one. Tax refund was like 20 minutes late getting a used Sensor from Guitar Center. I'm bitter about it, too.

    As you both have customised your guitars to your preferences, I'd be interested in a video about adjusting guitars. Changing pickups, tone capacitors, tone pots, etc. Should you change components or just buy a new guitar? I think it could prove to be an interesting topic. Anyways glorious video as usual!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 років тому +9

      Interesting. Pickups is just a minefield - nothing really objective to say that would make much sense. However, pots, caps and setup - some very useful stuff to impart there. Cheers!

      It would be really cool if both of you got Mexican Fenders or Squier classic vibe guitars and had a certain budget to spend on upgrades. I'd be interested to see what direction both of you go.

      yes yes yes! do that! :D i would really like that! having never really commented for the 3 years iv'e been watching you I really wanna see that!
      Also, I'm an electrician, so i know a thing or two about current, but i don't really understand what actually makes a buffer good or bad. What is it within the making of a buffer, pot, caps and such that makes all this so varying? materials used? if so, how to know what to get and what not to get?

    As a live thing, I simply don’t have a sonic space (yet) to have such a glorious device as the Roland in my live mix, without competition from many other band mates, but... it is a glorious sound, nonetheless. It is contrary to my nature and sonic preference, but more Tube Screamer midrange, and controlling and minimizing my penchant for Reverb and delay, makes my sound more present in the live mix.
