Multi-Head Tape Delays: Roland RE-201, RE-20 & Strymon Volante - That Pedal Show

- We compare an original Roland RE-201 Space Echo with the RE-20 pedal, Strymon Volante and EchoFix EF-X2.
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the episode. A little while back, Dan and I did a video on single-head tape delays based on our love of the Echoplex sound. You can watch it here: • Great Tape Delay Tones...
Now it’s the turn of the multi-head tape machine, specifically the classic Roland RE-201 Space Echo that debuted all the way back in 1974. We have some simple questions…
How much does the old, analogue RE-201 sound like the ‘new’ RE-20 digital pedal?
What about the EchoFix and the Strymon Volante?
Can Dan put together a Heath-Robinson pedalboard that simulates what a multi-head tape delay does?
Let’s do this - enjoy the episode!

The best thing ever are the LEGO Boards. It’s just so cool to watch whole pedals become “components.”
It's at times like this when Dan stops hiding his insane talents behind modesty and does what he can do that my jaw is constantly slackened. Blimey Charlie.
Dan’s playing.... that intro. Someone has really been putting in the time. Absolutely beautiful sir. Please keep that coming!
Glorious intro!
Agreed!
Yep, lovely stuff.
This!
And at about 30 min mark wowzers Batman!
That intro demonstrates why everyone needs a Tele (even if it won't be your main weapon of choice).
(spoiler: it will)
Hotblack Desiato
My weapon of choice is a brick. Good old brick. Can’t go wrong.
Hotblack Desiato Yeah, I’ve always been a Strat guy. Always hated the look of a telecaster. Until Dan’s red, and Oliver Thompson’s black. But, jeez, this yellow sounds better than Mick’s blue. I’m going to have to get a less expensive version of yellow.... It is schweet.
That rosewood adds some warmth to the tone.
@@tiadiad Niiiice.
Quick side note: Blue is sounding superb Mick. Almost made me forget about the tales of tone hedge I was told as a child.
Mick smiling in enjoyment of Dan's playing is wonderful. Find someone who looks at you the way mick looks at Dan
Most of would be lucky to have the Bromance these two have. Love these guys!
Watched an old episode from 2015 to relearn compression as boost - 15 mins long, tiny room, no beards. Great to see how everything has grown!
Headphones on, glass of wine, expecations high... Dan’s intro done - expectation met and almost an hour to go... that was lovely stuff Dan !
Cheers!
Well worth the wait. Possibly my favourite episode so far. A little of everything I love about the show - alll kinds of tonerdery, great playing, and I learned to love my Volante all over again! Great job!
Thank you guys so so soooo much for going back to the original intro!!! ❤️❤️
I have been waiting patiently for this. Thank you guys.
That was genius of Dan making that pedalboard to emulate what a tape delay does.
Dans build a board delay was unreal! I am pleased to hear my favourite pedal today (Strymon Volante).
Thanks a million for the awesome video as always!
I love the way you guys react to each other's playing. Dan just murdering the subtle beauty in that intro and Mick just smiles smartly at Simon with a little nod.
1974! Great vintage, Mick & I born the same year!
Just wanted to say how compelling this channel is... here you are talking about things I know nothing about, and may never use in my home playing, and the details just sort of wash over me, yet I sat through the entire show and loved it! Great work, guys. Thanks for everything you do!
Way back in 1984 one of the best sounding rigs I have heard was an old Vox Wah, into old Sound City 50 watt head, into an Altair Attenuator, then the line level signal was fed into a Roland Space Echo, then to a solid state power and out to a 4x12 cabinet. The amp reacted like a germanium Fuzz Face with the guitar’s volume knob, from clean to dirty, and the Space Echo was magical. Today I do prefer using my 65 Amps London (using the EF86 Channel) and my 65 Amps Empire (using the Plexi Channel) in a Wet/Dry configuration, but for that time the sound was great.
Love my volante. Great work fellas. Always a pleasure tuning in to these videos.
Great video! The production is so professional and we are spoiled! Thanks TPS!
I watched your original video on the Volante while we were sitting around in the hospital waiting on my wife to be induced for the birth of my son. As soon as we got home from the hospital, I went out and bought it and haven't regretted it. Now I get to be reinspired by the volunteered almost two years later!
Always get excited when you do episodes on delay. Great stuff!
Thanks guys. I’ve learnt a lot from this episode. Who’d have thought so much entertainment could be had from a show about guitar pedals? Appreciate the work and thought that goes in o these shows and the playing is top notch too.
Playing on this episode is simply superb.
Dan - I love how you sometimes just go to a different place when you're playing. You're a million miles away, and I love it. You both are a continuing inspiration. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and your talent.
Cheers Alf 🤓👍
Thank you for finally laying out a signal path needed for digital delays to accurately emulate the true sound of tape echoes. Lovely tone🙏
Oh it's the rack gear legend himself. Alohatone
This is great! Looking forward to a vintage digital delay episode! Thank you guys!
The joy on knowledge and creativity emanating from the two of you is inspiring!!! Thank you for a respite on a Friday you LEGENDS!!!!!
Ah, cheers matey
Absolutely stunning sounds! After years of watching this show and loving the sounds you get, I’ve finally started running a wet/dry rig for my solo bass set up and it sounds huge! Thank you for all the great advice! Now I feel tape delays have to factor into that as well!
YEs!
I've gotten so used to seeing Mick with a beard that when I'm watching old videos, it feels weird when it is missing. It's just too majestic, ha!
Love your work guys and now I know what to spend the next hour of my friday on. Cheers!
Dan, your breadboard is absolutely epic. Superb lecture on the workings of tape delay.
Whenever a video involves multi headed delay dans playing elevates to a different level! Love it! Also the LEGO board is probably one of the most interesting and informative things I’ve seen on the show.
I bought the Volante almost straight after watching your very first video on it. I'm happy to see you're still amazed and delighted by it like I am :). Your playing was very inspired this episode and really made me want to pick up my own guitar, though I must finish this day of work first haha. Also, such beautiful chords today, thank you for making me smile this morning
Just bought a used Volante earlier this week and it arrives today. Perfect timing on the video
Great Show!!!! The Strymon Volante has been whispering my name and now it's echoing in my head, in stereo no less :-) I'll use the Sweetwater link when I make my purchase. You guys are great and I love it when Dan builds the "Frankenstein" version of pedals. Cheers!!
That 201 has a lusciousness that seems unique... So warm and magical. Brings the IT factor everytime. And 74 was a good year! 😉
Yes it was! It's when I was conceived hahahaha!
Wicked and very well done. The complex route towards replicating the Space echo with all the pedals, was very clever and informative. Thank you.
Epic intro playing! Beautiful! Well done, sir!
Very nice intro by Dan. Delicate and beautiful. Wonderful!
Love the component board to demonstrate what’s happening in the multi-head pedals - really well done.
Inspiring playing today guys! Loved it. Good delay sounds like this make it hard to put the guitar down! I had forgotten how good the Volante is, have to break mine out again. I also got it after you did the initial show on it and was blown away.
I have been fortunate enough to be able to invest in gear featured on the show, like said Volante (and, if I'm very honest, the Ripply Fall and the Cali hanging out on the board), I must express my appreciation for your approach of returning to gear over time. It is a deeply valid pedagogical thing in itself to look at something more than once, and a deeply cool habit for two such gentlemen as yourselves on the internet. When it could be all churn through new stuff, you take an enlightened approach and treat favorites in a rich and curious way rather treating them as covered. It's a great help and just an excellent thing for those of us lucky enough to score some of the great stuff you guys help us understand.
The build-a-board section is too cool. Bravo!
I was on a camping site (no wifi, except at the reception) listening to the podcast version of this episode. Thank you for another great episode. 55’28”, that’s what it’s all about.
Thank you gentlemen for all the glorious sounds!!! For us, the difference between the pedals and the real thing is the space and feel. With the real units the sound is whole--one big beautiful hunk of tone! With the pedals, it is the sound of the guitar and an obviously added "other" sound behind it (the delay). When we recorded out debut album last year we had the chance to shoot out at the studio a real Roland Space Echo RE-201 with a pedal version and some plugins as well, and a real 1970's Maestro Echoplex EP-3 with, again, pedals and plugins. Not even close!!! Actually both units were also used in the mix for vocals!! Just superb!!!
The frankenboard concept is easily one of my favorite additions to your videos. Fantastic video guys! Been hoping to see an RE-20 debut on here!
Dan, you are a genius! I was hoping you would do this again and you did not disappoint! Wow! You seriously need to make a Delay themed t-shirt!
And I remember your first video on the Volante, prompted me to go down to my local shop and play with one... it was the first pedal I bought when getting back into guitar! I still love it dearly and am so thrilled to see you guys rediscover it.
Probably the best intro in the show so far, awesome playing and tone! Congrats
This is my absolute favorite TPS episode. It made me love going after great simulated tape sounds. I’d love to own a 201 one day, but for now I’ve managed to get a great 2 head sound from my Source Audio Collider in unlocked mode using the Tape setting on both engines.
This was always going to be a show of gorgeous sounds, but I’m amazed at good the Volante sounds. The peak was easily Dan’s Lego multihead tape delay concoction. A superb way of breaking down the component stages and above all it sounded incredible! 👏
That Lego build-a-board is an extraordinarily clever and practical demonstration of a multi-head delay - and sounds really good. Well done !!!
Love the signal path diagram, super cool! I love this kinda stuff.
Thanks Chaps - was feeling rather unwell, started watching the show fell asleep and woke up feeling much better - miracle healing properties - have watched it again (awake this time) and the penny has dropped on what the spacing knob on the volante does (probably should have been able to work that out for myself)
This is an incredibe episode! I didn't watch it on Friday as I assumed it was a "how close can a pedal get to the sound of..." video, but Dan building a modular tape delay out of other pedals...my GOD! Please do more of these, absolutely mega!
I really enjoyed watching the end of the video that pedal board is magic!
Amazing show today guys!
Great show guys! I’ve had the heads on my Volante panned to one side for a wet/dry setup and it sounds awesome. Looks like I’ll be switching it back to stereo mode again, at least for awhile. Thanks for the inspiration!
Another quality episode chaps and a MASSIVE thank you from me! You guys have been with me for the last 5 years since I decided to stop being a wuss and join a band at the tender age of 40. You have a knack of discussing something relevant for my particular situation and to say I’ve learnt so much is up there with the understatements! There’s one episode I’ve been waiting for since it was briefly mentioned once upon a time and that is FEEDBACK. A failsafe method eludes me at home and playing live. I’ve been left hanging, waiting for the magic to happen more often than not. How about it, maybe an item in the “things you want us to try” episodes? Thanks again guys, you are awesome.
Still on lockdown in Leicester- never mind I’m definitely now inspired to go and spend several hours messing with all my delays/splitters/preamps/compressors/amps and guitars, thank you so much once again👍🎸🇬🇧
Hey guys! Thank you all so much for highlighting the Volante! I have one as well and I was curious what all you both could do with it, sounded righteous btw. Also Dan's Lego board was immense! Very inspiring and well done!!!
Namaste Gentlemen. Dan ... that’s THE best and possibly most inspired I’ve seen/heard to you play. Very luxurious...
The bag of tricks at the end was a great explanation of how delays work
Darn EPIC playing from both of you... one can really tell you boys are inspired!! Also really glad to see the old strat back!
Thank you Markus!
These guys are such a pleasure to watch and listen to. Loved the comparison of TimeLine etc.
If anyone was struggling to hear the modulation on the RE20 vs the RE201 in the clips and thought "...meh..." , here is a tip (if you have one and don't already know!) - the tape speed is controlled by the Repeat Rate knob - this slows the "tape" or speeds it up - the faster it is the straighter the sound, the slower it is the more warbly - so, head 2 on a slow speed is more warbly than tape 3 on a fast speed - both can give the exact same delay time ;)
also on the Leslie/Univibe one, the balance becomes depth/throb in Univibe setting. The RT20, as you say, for those who may have come upon one used, or whatever.
Awesome!! I've been holding off on getting the RE-20 because it didn't seem to have as much wow as I like, and knowing that you can add more using this trick completely sells me on it. Thanks!
Very helpful tip, thanks!
I don't usually comment but Dan, that intro was outstanding! Nice work!
I played it 3 times already.
That blew me away when you built that crazy thing at the end. Got a Volante coming in the mail too! Much excite.
I said it on the first “Dan-made delay”, but this is spectacular. I love Mick’s playing in the section after the headroom is added (w/Dan manipulating the pedal parameters). Just wonderful, you two absolute legends.
Love YOUUUUU!!!
-Aaron
Thanks man. And thank you for your constant kindness in comments. We feel it! X
I love my Volante so much. It replaced by El Capistan, which was also an amazing pedal, but the SOS looping on the volante is a lot more useful for me. Thanks for all you guys do.
Wow that Roland 201 is something special. Great playing by Dan. The Tele and big Roland tape fit him like a glove.
You guys have both taught me and cost me so much. I thank you. My wife does not.
Yesss! Very excited to watch this one!
delay and reverb episodes are the best. love you
Now we're talking... This is the kinda shootout I need😍 can't ever get enough multi head delays🤘
This was MAD, love the sound of the Volante
Finally, I've been waiting for this one!
you guys are the best! love it.
You lads rule! Hope you and yours are safe and happy!
Dan, you sound great, man! I’m only a few minutes into the video, but just had to say you’re killing it!
Ah, cheers Anthony 🤓👍
The Frankenstein-board was epic Dan. You smashed it out of the park... on the flip side I think I NEED an echo-fix and a volante 😀 thanks for the much inspiring tones
You guys never disappoint!! For all my acoustic guitar lovers put that Cali and volante into your acoustic soundhole pick up chain. Then run the K&K pure mini with their condenser mic running into a seperate channel. Slight verb on both channels. BOOM! Magic!
As always, Dans genius in building this stuff astounds me. Good effort Mr Steinhardt good effort 👍👏
"OH! I CAN DO THAT!... For another time." Gents, my face hurts I'm smiling so hard. Thank you for a brilliant end to the week.
Super dooper episode! That self made multi head pedal board was really fantastic...
Great episode
Just watching this after seeing the Space Station go overhead in the early hours.....very ethereal and apt. Nice show lads.
This was awesome guys. 👍🏼😊
Hi guys. I'm really digging this episode those lasts days. I've made some adaptations and I've got a slightly different approach, but I kept the general idea. And I feel I've find something very inspiring and this setup is going to be my core tone, my home for a while. Thank you for the inspiration in the quest of finding inspiring tones ! Cheers
Excellent show as usual. Delay is my absolute favourite #1 effect; if I had to, would happily live my days with guitar - echo - amp, if I had to (thankfully I don't have to!). And multi-tap delays especially. Hank knew what he was doing, way back when.
Wondrous wall of modulating delay and echo. The Dan built pedal is massive. We will wait for the stereo upgrade. Well done.
Mick, the tones you were getting out of Blue and the Strymon were so inspiring!
1973 in the house! Good show, as usual.
Volante' just sounds awesome! Glad I scored one.
Guten Tag Dan and Mick! Never miss a show, absolutely love everything you do. Greetings from Franken, about 25 min drive from Thomann. Zeitversatztonbandverzögerungseffekt ftw!
I believe I've now completed my BA (US termonology) in tape delay and have moved into Masters degree territory! Good fun and instructional as always - thanks!
The lego board section of the video is amazing! Wonderful idea on how to show how a circuit works! The Volante has been on my radar for awhile, this makes me want one more.
First tones on the 201 and right into Brian Setzer sound!
Great show Boyz! Thank you
I found Mick’s playing that starts at 33:34 really inspiring! Excited to get home and mess around with the ol’ DD-200 and see what happens .
good stuff, i watch a lot of these head to heads. I like how it gets very comparative around 18:20, those dialed in patch comparisons are golden. Lots of head to heads dont dial things in enough, its less helpful; when its just raw patch against raw patch. Strymon products always sound so good. ha, that component build out is bad ass. TY guys.
Great stuff again, lads!
Lockdown toys arrived: EHX Octavix and an Eccos. Stacking the Eccos with a Flight Time - just loving it.
So I have a playlist of my favorite TPS episodes that I throw on as background (in addition to paying attention and learning something new time and again). This and the EL-84 episode are easily two of my favorites. Sure the Volante and multi-head tape sounds are incredible, but what really gets me is both Dan's intro and Mick's beautiful playing at 35:00. Easily some of the best from you both in all of TPS! I thought to myself 'right - I'll just learn what Mick played here by ear, and then pop over to the EL-84 episode to learn Dan's intro there'... Way more difficult than I expected, which just goes to show how incredible you both are!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Great vlog chaps that's exactly how I play. You do know ambient is the new rock and roll keep up the great work chaps.
Jesus bloody christ, Dan! Your play is getting more and more amazing!
Aweseome sounds as well. And I wouldn't have expected the consensus of the episode to be "yup, that modern digital thing is better than that tape dinosaur that is literally as old as me".
