The most UNDERRATED Southern Rock band ever!! Doug was normal lead BUT Toy sang lead on this one - he was a Vietnam vet who when wounded, awarded the Purple Heart did not get out but went back to Vietnam to his unit & his Band of brothers!!! You should really watch the live version of this as it showcases his talent so much better!!!!
Toy Caldwell, the lead guitarist, is singing on this track. He wrote the song as well. Doug Gray sang most of the leads but not this one. There's a video of them doing this live where you can see Toy and the band.
Marshall Tucker band from South Carolina, back in the early 70s I was fortunate enough to see them live several times. Awesome group, highly talented. Toy Caldwell, the lead singer in this song served in Vietnam as a Marine
His voice sounds much like like Creedance Clearwater Revival lead singer - a strong, sometime growly, but clear male singing voice ( Fortunate Son). Enjoyed your comments and the background info!❤
Saying you never heard of Waylon Jennings…. WELP there’s an artist for you to check out. One of the biggest outlaw country artist of all time. Many songs you might recognize. Plus was in a country super group with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
Saw him perform a couple songs around the year 2000 for a Nashville Fireman's Benefit concert and Waylon was so swaggering drunk or high, he slurred & coughed through 3 songs until my date and I left the concert. It was pitiful. 😢 In his heyday he was good. Luckily the starter band was quite good so we got out money's worth.
This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.
MTB is my favorite band. I grew up on them along with CD Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, OMD, etc. All of Southern Rock and the like had a huge following in the Midwest and St Louis in general. I’ve seen them live in their original line-up. One of those occasions when you realize that there’s no substitute for live music with genuine instruments. I could make a very long list of songs, but a few necessary are: “Heard It In a Love Song” (aside from “Can’t You See”, this song would be their most commercial); “Searchin’ For A Rainbow”; “Fire On The Mountain”… but my favorites are “In My Own Way” and “24 Hours At a Time” (with Charlie Daniel’s on Fiddle).
Imagine being 19 and going on a road trip, loving Southern Rock and singing this song on the road! I am a Huge Southern Rock fan from New York. I have seen M.T.!! Among others. Oh to be a teenager from the 70’s!
As mentioned Toy was a Vietnam veteran and he wrote this song after seeing several of his buddies receive "Dear John" letters from their wives and girlfriends back home. Anybody who's ever been dumped knows the feelings expressed in this song. 10X worse when you're 5000 miles from home.
Although they might not have the overall catalog, this song and a few others are up there in the southern rock pantheon with the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
For other huge voices in Southern Rock that sound similar to this, which by the way this is Toy Caldwell here, the guy who wrote the song, check out Ricky Medlocke and Blackfoot (Medlocke was a drummer and backing singer in the early days of Lynyrd Skynyrd, before forming his own Native American band Blackfoot, where he sang lead vocals): "Train, Train" and "Highway Song". Also, he sang lead a few times on some early Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff, and it's fantastic: "Preacher's Daughter" and "White Dove". Even more similar, perhaps, is the lead singer for Molly Hatchet, probably the next biggest band in Southern Rock behind Lynyrd Skynyrd: "Dreams I'll Never Know" and "Flirtin' With Disaster". All of those I bet you would be interested in, and would probably make for great reactions.
Kudo's for taking the time to listen. You stumbled on some great music from back in the day. Many other classics, wore their music out. "Take the Highway" "Ramblin'", "Fire on the Mountain", "This Ol' Cowboy", "Heard it in a Love Song", list goes on from The Marshall Tucker Band...enjoy DEFINITELY have to get you some Waylon Jennings also. "I've Always Been Crazy", "I'm a Ramblin' Man", "Are you Sure Hank Done it This Way", "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean", "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand", and more top hits... You're in for some great music!!! Then we'll get you some David Allan Coe...ENJOY The Marshall Tucker Band
Pretty sure this is an edited version of the original. Look for the Saturday Night In Macon live version from '73. Try "24 Hours At A Time". Doug sings that one.
There's a live version by Hank William Jr. that's a good one. Toy Caldwell was a good friend of Hank's especially after Hank had a bad accident and didn't know if he would sing again.
A great Tribute to the Greats of Southern Rock…A Must Hear from the Legendary Charlie Daniels Band: “South’s Gonna Do It Again”….you will never hear a fiddle like this!
Charlie Daniels was at a show with MTB and asked if he could borrow some money. MTB gave him a large envelope of cash and Charlie said I'll get this back to you, MTB said this is a gift. These guys had class
Hard to believe the background info you’re reading doesn’t include the fact that Toy Caldwell is singing this song. I agree with other commenters here that you should check out the live video of this song. It’s amazing that Toy sang this well and wasn’t even the lead singer. All that guitar talent and songwriting talent and he could sing like this too. Phenomenal. Loved their Carolina Dreams album.
One of the ones where the live performance just hits more. Great pick though. Edit: since you mistakenly got lead singer mixed up, you owe us the live version reaction! 😁 (I own three live performance albums; Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive", The Scorpions "World Wide Live" & The Who at Leeds.
I was so so disappointed when you started playing it and you didn't do the live version. Oh my gosh you have to watch this live actually all their performances
if you haven’t heard Waylon you need to listen to him. First artist to get artistic freedom from “The Nashville Sound “Waylon, along with Willie Tompall Glaser and Waylon’s wife Jessi Colter, had the first platinum album ever recorded in Nashville.Start with I’ve Always Been Crazy and go from there with Waylon you can’t get a bad one.As for the Marshall Tucker Band there next biggest song was Heard It In A Love Song, that one shows off Doug Gray’s vocals well, but I prefer Fire On The Mountain more
...Doug is the current main vocalist, you heard Toy Caldwell(RIP), the original Main Vocalist. Here's the Amazing live version of CAN'T YOU SEE: ua-cam.com/video/dlc6xCPx60U/v-deo.html
Flautist (fla)(tist) is the correct pronunciation when it’s spelled this way. Flue tist when spelled flutist. Flutist is the older term but flautist is used popularly in England.
@@JAMESMOORE-gq4vv I bought their greatest hits double CD many years ago, and always a pleasure to listen to since high school and college mostly but still listen to most of that music from the 60’s and 70’s mostly, along with newer jazzy blues and rock ‘n roll!

That's the best version! Just a tad slower... . . .
There is another live version that's fantastic! I saw them in concert in the early 80's.

Saw them open for grateful dead sept 1977 at englishtown new jersey so glad I was there good vibes all day
Saw in concert. GREAT!
I got to see them in 2018 before the world stopped. They KILLED.
Needless to say, the ones sill living are a lot older now (aren't we all?)
His voice sounds much like like Creedance Clearwater Revival lead singer - a strong, sometime growly, but clear male singing voice ( Fortunate Son). Enjoyed your comments and the background info!❤

Waylons health was bad during that time.

45 years later, my favorite Band, IN MY OWN WAY.
Agreed. My favorite as well. Nobody ever talks about this gem.
MTB’s greatest hits collection is as good as anybody’s.

It sounds so good because of the SOUL!
It’s Southern rock soul music!❤
Incredible music… welcome
He was a blind piano tuner that had his name on the key to “studio” where they started.
Welcome to yet another great Southern band!
I’ve been down around Houston Texas where the sun shines most of the time…

I believe you had it right first time: the first syllable of 'flautist' rhymes with out. Good instincts. Great band great song.
Although they might not have the overall catalog, this song and a few others are up there in the southern rock pantheon with the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
And Charlie Daniel's Band
Great reaction. Keep the good work; many more to go...
That’s Toy Caldwell on vocals. He’s also the lead guitarist. Southern rock!
Toy is one of the most underrated guitarist of ALL time!!
Two massive live albums from the 70s were Peter Frampton, Frampton comes alive and KISS Alive II. I own both and several others on vinyl.

The Marshall Tucker Band
Somehow this shit got a double dose of soul. Perfectly lovely.
Great reaction! Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd and the Outlaws are 3 of my favorite southern rock groups.
And Charlie Daniel's Band
I went to sleep to this song and now I'm waking to it!
What a life!
(I own dozens of live concert albums!)
Toy Caldwell is singing lead.
Incredible music… welcome
Should look at live version.
Southern rock: Molly Hatchett- Flirtin With Disaster! Guiters are fire
These boys can really jam when they want to. Check out "Everyday I have the Blues'" by them. The best concert I ever attended was MTB.
Pretty sure this is an edited version of the original. Look for the Saturday Night In Macon live version from '73.
Try "24 Hours At A Time". Doug sings that one.
Toy Caldwell singing lead. Doug sings it now, live in concert because Toy left the band, but he’s been dead for years.
There's a live version by Hank William Jr. that's a good one. Toy Caldwell was a good friend of Hank's especially after Hank had a bad accident and didn't know if he would sing again.

Blackfoot Highway song is awesome !
This is Toy on lead vocals. This is also an edited down version
“This Ol’ Cowboy” is 🔥🔥🔥

I thought this was the live verson. It's so much longer and watching Toy sing is the best part. Also he is great on the guitar.
❤❤❤❤❤
I own only one live album, the quintessential one- "Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East".
Fire On the Mountain by MTB is tits.
I agree with a lot of comments, watch the live version it’s sooo much better!
❤
It's Toy on this one. You can hear Doug on the really nice backing vocals. I think Doug does my other favorite, Heard It In A Love Song,
Never heard of Waylon Jennings? Lord have mercy, let me get back up in my chair, because I fell over. Can't wait for you to check him out.
Now that you mentioned Waylon Jennings, you need to react to him. The more you explore new artist, the more other artist come up. Never ending.
My cuzzin George McCorkle was a founding member of TMTB
So bad you liked. Great song.😊😊😊😊😊
Yes, check out the live version, it's longer and, I believe, is better.
Ya Toy is singing lead vocals on this one, Doug sings most the other ones but this is Toy singing
Toy wrote the song and Doug was supposed to sing it, But he thought Toy could do it better, So it ended up Toy singing that song.
I had Peter Frampton Live
First record I bought with my own money, the eagles double live for 12 bucks Canadian

Wrong!!! Toy Caldwell on vocals. A Marine, Vietnam- Purple Heart Recipient.
Toy Caldwell singing.
Blackfoot
Diary Of A Working Man
Hank jrs version is very good as well!
Chris Stapleton would do a nice job with that song. And so would Gregg Allman (RIP)
Please check out the live Version:The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See - 9/10/1973 - Grand Opera House (Official)

What harmonies Doug can sing when not singing lead!

Theres a live video version
please consider the song Bright Lights by Gary Clark Jr . I really think you will dig it . try the live version .
Reminds me of Alvin Lee
No that’s Toy. In the original line up.
Actually this song is very similar to Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Great song may I suggest a classic rock song by Mason Profit song Two Hangman!
