You're right - he improvised all the time. If you listen to another live version of this song by him, it would sound totally different. Like Hendrix, he really never played the same thing twice. Genius.
“When I play, I play sort of like talking, you know, syllables, you say a sentence here, a sentence there and then, I’ve to stop and think for something else to keep my conversation going. But his didn’t seem to be that at all. It was fluent, he flowed when he played. He could get something going and it was like a song and it would just go on and on. Ideas continuously flowed, I don’t have that. There is not a lot of people that I hear that have that but Stevie had it.” - BB King Anything from this Mocambo show is pretty much the pinnacle of blues guitar playing.
I have always viewed SRV as an enigma, some sort of an open-channel medium who flows music seemleesly and effortlessly with intense emotion. I am grateful for the music he left us by age 36, but one can only imagine what more could have emerged from this ICON had he lived a longer life. RIP SRV, you are so loved brother! Very much appreciated the reaction, TY.
Saw Stevie Ray 4 times even the 2nd to last show he did. Alpine Valley Wisconsin the night before the Helicopter crash. Couldn't go to the Sunday show so I went to the Saturday show. Robert Cray with the Memphis Horns then SRV and of course Clapton. Great show. I told you guys I've seen around 200 concerts with some very big names.. Stevie was always my favorite.. Thank you Phil and Sam for bringing this music back. ❤
Stevie was beyond amazing, but thumbs up for Double Trouble being able to give him a solid base to soar over, and for being able to follow whatever he did.
This is one of the few covers where I feel comfortable saying it's better than the original. And the only fault of the original is that it's too short. RIP Stevie and JImi. Two legends taken too soon.
Stevie ray is great guitar player and for years I never gave him credit or listen to him because was a bigger hendrix fan but got older and it's great to hear now ..keeping hendrix alive
Stevie like some other great guitarists doesn't read music. It one of the reasons he adlibs a lot. If you listen to different performances of the same song, they vary as to his mood because he is the guitar. He and it are one. Even he said he idolized Jimmy Hendrix. He was an inspiration to him.
He genuinely has 20+ songs which should be considered GREATS. Check out Life Without You live at the Capitol Theater, Life by the Drop and Look at Little Sister live in Austin. All AMAZING
Miss him so much. A very important performance is a must see… Life Without You - live from Capital Theater A tribute to his late guitar tech - Charlie. Watch how he works through tech difficulties; the passion, and love.
Had the very good fortune to see Stevie Ray Vaughn live in 1989, just over a year before he was taken from us, and it was a master class in Guitar technique, and competence. He is one of the three best ever, along with Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. Got to see Mr. Beck as well, but I was just a little too young to see Mr. Hendrix, he passed when I was 12.
You need, if you haven't yet, watch Stevie Ray live in Austin City Limits from 1989 doing "Little Sister" where he transitioned Guitars because a string broke in the middle of the song, he cemented his GOAT status for sure and of course the original was done by Jimi Hendrix in 1967
What I love about Rivera Paradise is Stevie flowing from Jazz to blues effortlessly. I think he was truly evolving into much more than blues guitarist, starting to incorporate more jazz in his playing was starting to set him even further apart from other guitarists.
The original song was just over 2 minutes in length. This is SRV's cover of Hendrix's Little Wing Solo, which was an extended instrumental very similar to this.
@@dathorndike4908 no disrespect to Jimi ( The Master) and being a longtime Hendrix and Stevie fan of the highest order, I truly believe Jimi's jaw would be on the floor too....
Stevie used 13s on his guitar, that means the high E string was a 13. normally people use 9-42 or 10-48 string sets... it was pretty much Piano wire. Stevie's custom string gauge was.013 - 015 - 019 . 028 . 038 . 058.... Stevie was a beast.❤
One thing I heard about MR. Vaughn....he played with 12 or 13 gage strings on his guitar. Most guitarists play with much lighter strings. When they played with his guitar their fingers got sore real fast....respect for his strength!
Thanks, guys.. Stevie had great respect for Jimi, and covered several of his songs...(I read an interview where Stevie said "I don't play with much finesse.. I usually play like I'm breaking out of jail"... right?)
From Hendrix' Axis Bold As Love album, Jimi performed it live a lot and there is plenty of footage. The more of live Hendrix you listen to the more you will see Hendrix style and phrasing in SRV's playing. It may appear that Stevie is free forming or improvising on this performance, but he's often absolutely nailing much of Jimi's phrasing from some of his legendary performances. Often, when SRV plays a Hendrix tune, he'll toss in a lick or phrase from a totally different Hendrix song. Here, when he returns from adjusting the amps, to change his sound, we get a touch of Machinegun followed by a little Castles Made Of Sand. Of all these artists that died too young, Stevie lived the longest, and took it the furthest. I do recommend Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. In the 70s he took over much of Hendrix's sound after he died. Frankie is still around. And yes, he's on a similar level to Jimi and SRV.
Jimi got the idea of playing behind his back when he saw Buddy Guy do it. Both Jimi and SRV were great fans of Buddy as are most reputable white blues guitarists
Hendrix's rendition of this song from the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 is the best version I've heard of this. Stevie's version is great, but in the end he really doesn't stamp his originality on it, as it's pretty much a straight cover, but without the lyrics.
Hey guy's I actually worked a few shows with stevie ray vaughan as a stagehand check out videos from the Capital Theater in Passaic N.J that one was my favorite.😎😎😎😎😎

Every guitarist plays "Little Wing" because is such a great vamp and progression to play over as an instrumental... SVR's is likely the best in that format. The blues are freeform, the song is freeform like jazz it's about improvising, in the moment, the zone. The original by Jimi was a song with lyrics but short verses followed by the jam where he let loose his guitar... Well, she's walking through the clouds With a circus mind that's running wild Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams And her fairy tales That's all she ever thinks about Riding with the wind When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free "It's alright", she says, "It's alright" Take anything you want from me, take anything Anything Fly on, little wing

As Canadians I can't believe you have not reacted to fellow Canadian Frank Marino. One of the best guitar players ever. Live at the Agora is a masterclass in playing. Six hours of style and pure guitar bliss! Something Is Coming Our Way would be a good place to start. Frank deserves more attention.

Also riviera paradise, and his duet with Albert king! He was a legend in his own right and told Stevie “you’re the only white boy with a black daddy and I’m him” 😂

While no one can match Hendrix's creativity and magic, it takes tremendous technique to take an amazing song like this and go farther with it.
