Fixing The Handling Of My Cayman | Part 3 Porsche Alignment

  • Ever since my front coolant system was replaced due to leaking hoses, the handling of my Porsche Cayman 987.2 Sport hasn't quite been the same. It's got to be said, many wouldn't bother investigating this "minor" handling issue further, but I wasn't happy with my car. That's not the Max Revs way of life...
    The problem is that I have play in the steering wheel, with a dead and indeterminate spot around the straight ahead position when on the move.
    It couldn't be wheel alignment, as Porsche Brooklands did the wheel alignment twice, and recently when I visited an independent garage, I had the wheel alignment done again. The most recent alignment only one week prior to this video being made, all on the Hunter Hawkeye.
    Join me in part 3 of this video where I find out what's wrong with my Porsche Cayman, as I visit the Porsche handling experts at ‪@centergravitychassistuning‬www.centregravi...
    FYI. I have no business interests with Centre Gravity, and believe me I paid full price. They're not cheap, but then the best in life rarely is.
    Enjoying Life & Cars To The MAX!!

    This is really interesting results. And honestly does make me question main dealers. I had my alignment done at Porsche Tewksbury and remember asking them “do you need a full tank of fuel to do the alignment.” They said no. However, in your part two video the mechanic mentioned that it does need a full tank of fuel and that’s something said by Porsche factory peeps.
    Fair enough some bits maybe old and might need replacement to get it factory perfect but still I would expect Porsche to really go into this level of detail and tell me. People buy these cars for the fun and enjoyment factor. If the main dealers that work on these cars can’t give this services and can only follow what a computer says, is it really worth having your overall car maintenance done by them?
    Finally, great video Max. Like that your cars getting the love it truly deserves and in all honesty, in the future if you did decide to sell the car, anyone that buys it can be assured that the cars looked after.

      Point taken on the main dealer angle. As a business they make most of their money on new car sales. This is just my opinion... I reckon they are offering service purely to support customers who have bought new cars. Not because they want to offer the highest level of service quality.

      As a true Dealer Hater I need to defend them on this one. Please do the research and then a video on Dealer Operations profitability breakdown. I don't know what your profession is but this is UA-cam and old wife's tales are not mandatory. Even the alignment shop topped good facts with a bit of fudge to add value to their service. I have a car with 188k miles that does not need steering rods changed and I drive it like I stole it.@@MAXREVS

      @@BangAverageRider I’m glad someone out there notices and appreciates this fact. UA-cam has turned into a very commercial arena for many topics, whereby the outcome is driven by the fact someone has been paid behind the scenes... looking back at my previous comment above, it was born from the fact my wife was getting a little pi55ed off with all my spend on the car, and to be honest I don’t blame her. We have kids with no college fund yet and one day I’ll need a pension... I’d hate to produce content where I know I have to say something I don’t agree with, so that won’t happen on this channel.

      MAX REVS actually no issues whatsoever. Since your first video I’ve tried to simulate some of the road tests performed on your car but other than the usual camber drift, I have no complaints. So just a check up really but can’t imagine that it’s perfect. Like you, I’ll be happy to know that it will be as it came out of the factory when CG have done their magic.

      When I got out of driving several GT4s, I then noticed the steering on my Cayman wasn’t as sharp. This is to be expected. Then I drove a few other 981 base and 987 base cars, I could tell something wasn’t right with my car. Ultimately you need to get in a number of different cars to pickup subtle differences in your own. The GT4 steering is on another level, great steering compared to my 987.2

    • @parvinkukar1259
      @parvinkukar1259 4 роки тому +1

      Agree you do need to drive other caymans to notice the difference. Then you notice all the other stuff, brakes, rattles, suspension etc. And you can’t always address each one. However, some difference is just that not better or worse ie soft clutch some prefer and others don’t. I know on my car I would benefit from a short gear shifter, it’s just so loose,l.

    First off, Big respect for your passion. OMG, no shop would ever spend that much time here on a car unless it was an F1 car lol. They know you're on YT and will get them more business from their unbelievable time and effort hours. I had bad experiences with a basically new Mk3 Focus RS with alignments/tires and had to do the final adjustment myself after 3 paid alignments in the US. I would like to hear from you what the final Toe In/Out numbers are??? You should get to know what you like, not the OE numbers. FYI - nobody has ever specified the type of road (A/B in UK) for an alignment here. That seems to be a stretch of importance. Yes, solid new hardware is of course important! Why do ppl think that these things last forever. It's called preventative maintenance. You need lists of what needs replacement over large time intervals......just do them, don't wait for them to break and then complain that there is a problem and wonder why. Plastic bag over the mechanic's seat! Good luck in the US with that lol. Did you pay for his 1.5 hr+ of talking in these videos and the drive demo? That's $300USD extra here for a good shop.
    What are your alignment numbers? Too many words in his explanations......The basics are 1deg neg camber Fr, 1.5deg neg Rr and zero toe Fr and slight toe-in Rr for a performance alignment. What are his final numbers?
    Thx for your Vids!

      Thanks for the detailed comments Greg. First off the bat, trust me, I didn’t get any extra special treatment because I have a UA-cam channel. Unless you have a minimum of 10k subscribers, better still 100k subs, no one cares. This is what every paying customer gets from this shop. It’s not cheap mind you, the entry level labour rate for diagnosis and adjustment is around £400-450 plus 20% sales tax on top of that. In my case I had parts which needed replacement. Preventative not because they were broken. Costs all in were £500 parts and £500 labour. This is why they can spend the time with a single customer. I did not have to pay money for any extra ‘talking time in the video’ with them. This is what all customers get. The before and after settings are posted on the community tab of this channel. Sorry, I can’t post pictures here in the comments section. Go check this link - ua-cam.com/channels/tt-20dqyPzwlu1saO1KdYA.htmlcommunity

      Very Good. I can't see the After but it really doesn't matter.As long as the car drives great and you're happy. My next car will be a 981S. That's my interest in your car. It's great you're able to get that level of attention, but that is expensive. My Porsche race shop cost a 1/4 of that one and the results were equal to that 1/4. Maybe if I really bring them a Porsche then the results will be better....Cheers!@@MAXREVS

      @@MAXREVS Yes, that looks really accurate and near the zero toe I commonly see for the best. I would think you could get more neg camber in front but maybe not. Take the car to the track, that's when you can really find what the car needs next. Meet with MarkCup 70 @ Goodwood for instance. Looks like lots of good, low pressure track days there. But your car should be great for the road now. Glad you have guys that really care. Not many here....

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, and thanks for taking the time to comment. This was just part 1 of the series, more is covered in parts 2 and 3. I was thinking of installing PowerFlex polyurethane bushes. On discussion with the chaps, two things put me off. Firstly, they could be prone to squeaking. Even if you lubricate them on install, later down the road they could start squeaking. So I have been told, I cannot confirm this first hand. Secondly, there is a fair amount of labour costs involved to remove the old bushes, and replace with new. If you are going to use the old control arms, then the old ball joints could also fail. If you really were going to do it ‘properly’ on an old car, you would need new control arms, remove the bushes, then fit polyurethane ones, then install to the car. Quite a bit more expensive, and not worth the aggro for me.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  2 роки тому

      Welcome, if you love the Porsche Cayman I hope you enjoy the content here. I try not to add such costs up, but to the best of my knowledge, I think I spent just over £10k on the car. I have since sold my 987.2 Cayman… I was planning on NEVER selling the 987.2… hence the expenditure. To be clear, around £6k was probably OPC bills.
      - New coolant hoses and cross over pipe work
      - New shifter cables
      - Suspension items which were worn in this video
      - Soul performance exhaust
      The way I am wired is that I really look after whatever I own. Yes, in terms of pure finance, this wasn’t the wisest of decisions. If I could go back in time… I would probably not use OPC and a specialist independent. I was new to the whole Porsche thing, and didn’t know where to turn. Then going to OPC just became a habit as I got to know them. A Cayman is a cracking car. My advice would be to spend as much as your budget allows, get it checked over 100% by a specialist prior to purchase, so you know what you’re getting, and maybe consider an indie specialist with a very good reputation. Anyhow, I know you’re not asking about buying advice, yes I do sometimes look back and think how much I’ve spent…. it was a keeper… until it wasn’t! To bring you up-to-date I went crazy last summer and purchased my dream car which is a 981 GT4. I am truly NEVER selling this car… you can see some videos about the GT4 on the recent uploads. Given my background etc… there is NO REASON I can ever justify another sports car for myself, until the house is paid off, our family Honda is upgraded, I have a massive pension, my kids are settled, etc… etc… in short, I’m DONE and super content with the GT4. Newer cars don’t really do it for me…

    What were the specs after Porsche alignment weeks before?
    Can't imagine left front toe out leaving shop, so what happened? Machine wasn't calibrated?

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  2 роки тому +1

      I have the print outs from the OPC after both alignment attempts. Both shops use the same equipment, you’re right to call out calibration. However wheel alignment technicians just align each wheel to get it into the “green zone” on the Hunter Hawkeye. There is still plenty of wiggle room within the green zones. What I don’t have is the alignment details prior to the front subframe coming off (which was required to change my coolant pipes).
      I just suspect it was the fine tuning I was after, the Cayman exposes minor alignment defects, and I had fresh tyres on which could exaggerate issues.
