As a teenager in the mid 70s I remember reading a review of the then new 930 turbo, the content and photos of which sparked a life-long desire to own a Porsche. In the mid 80s a Porsche franchise opened in the village where I lived, and with a lot of luck, I started delivering and collecting its customers' cars at weekends - 944s, 911s, 928s, and an exquisite orange 912, which was for sale at £10,000 - hindsight!. My Porsche driving days ended all to soon when I moved on in my full-time job, returning my Porsche experiences to magazines and tv car shows. But my desire to own didn’t diminish, and on my recent retirement I finally got my own set of keys, to a manual Cayman 987.2, something very similar in size and pace to the early 911s, delivering an intoxicating surge of induction and pace as the flat 6 races to the red line. The cost of the air-cooled cars may have escaped me, but the best Porsche is the one you can afford - and that’s my Cayman!
Nice! Similar story, teenage mid 70s, and a love of Porsche cars, and some day a owner, flash forward retired 2016 and 2019 got a nice 2006 boxster s. Aloha from Hawaii!
Me too. I have a cayman R. 987. Stick. My wife has the 718, the cayman R is quicker, better handling & manual. It’s a lighter gearbox, plus there is no electrical nonsense like voice control. Everything stripped for weight. It’s a racing machine. Quicker than the stock 911 carerra
Echo Two, I traded my 05 Boxster S for a 981Spyder and I miss my old Porsche more than I thought I would. What they say about older and newer Porsches is true, “It’s a better car but a worse Porsche”.
Charles Lu absolutely correct. It’s a proper drive the 987 it’s manual not an automatic for starters. no fancy voice control or gadgets. More fun to drive the 987 but as you say the 718 is the better car.
yea definitely the best sounding one by far. The noise is intoxicating. Better sounding than any 991 generation 911s that isn't a GT3 or GT3RS (the 991.1 GTS also sounds very good but 981 GTS still takes it imo, it just sounds so much closer to your head and ears, just absolutely blasting the noise into your ears)
@@movieclipz5034 987 has the engine noise but missing that post 2012 exhaust work that all german sports cars focused more on starting around that era, 718 tries very hard to make it up with the exhaust but it only got so much attractive engine noise to work with (I personally still think it sounds quite ugly...) 981 is perfect in that regard.
Diego SP The man who designed the Cayman, Pinky Lai, calls out the 987 as the one that will go down in the history books. They’re all great cars, however there can only be one first. Listen to his quote here - ua-cam.com/video/5qt2J12aUJs/v-deo.html
Just purchased my first Porsche yesterday after years of BMW M Cars. I am happy to announce it is a 981 GTS!! And I think it's a better drive than the M4 GTS I'm getting out of. Watching this just made me forget what buyer's remorse means!
There used to be some overlap, where people crosshopped m3:s and porsches, but that was another era. Now, just get a porsche and forget about bmw. The 1m, sure, but that was also years ago and its not like CSL vs 911 of those days anyway. And im saying this as a lifelong bmw fan, gave up about 10 years ago.
@@fredriksvard2603 I agree, and I got into this F80 generation hoping to get some of that back, but when I test drive this 981, I knew it was something special. NA engines are amazing, but the gas milage on them are 😬
Gagan Gill i kinda realized this with a cayman in, hmm, might have been 2012-13 or so. Lost track of bmw after e92 and 1m, im sure m2 is good but 1) bmw has nothing to compete with current new p cars, and there are no real successors to e30, e36, and 2) there are such good options for used porsches, like older caymans/gt4 and996/997 c2 and turbo. GT3/2/rs i always thought were beyond bmw, you dont crosshop those and m cars really. Porsche still makes some somewhat lightweight track focused cars, bmw were still in that game up until e46 (csl) platform. Now i dont see how they differ from mercedes and audi really (and lets not get into how those brands stepped up in racing and with the r8 and gtr models).
I have a 981 Cayman S manual that I hunted for after I saw your video from 2012 about how amazing a used cayman S was. No regret. Best car ever. Thank you so much!
Great video as ever. Nice to see a comparison of these. Personally I think Porsche got it right straight out of the box. 987 for me. And BTW those roads you're on are amazing!
from the criteria they used to pick the 987 I do think the 4.0 GTS would win. Looking forward to more of these Cayman reviews in the future. 2024's electric Cayman has to be included with that 4.0 GTS! You just can't go wrong with any of these cars.
Having driven all 3 I totally agree with all of your comments. It is worth knowing that you can significantly improve the feel of the 981 by fitting the 718 rear ARB and brace as well as dialling in more neg camber. This is about all that Porsche changed and the improvement is drastic.
Very interesting! As the owner of a 981s with x73 suspension, I have always wondered how much of the handling improvement granted to the 718 actually comes down to the suspension versus subtle changes in electronic steering. PASM is the sportiest option in the 718, but it gets major kudos and I've no doubt that it is good. Another tiny detail to keep in mind is that the steering wheel of the 718 actually has a smaller radius (I know this for sure because I recently swapped out my OEM multifunction wheel for a 718 wheel lol). I really need to drive the 718 (preferably on track), because now I'm curious about the overall differences in the way the two cars are set up.
Nice review guys, Porsche really nailed it when they came up with the Cayman models. I drive a 2.7 with a few of the option boxes ticked. I never tire of listening to the flat 6 in sports mode as it revs through 5 to 7 thousand rpm, music to my ears. Great cars with an epic soundtrack!
Have owned my 2016 981 S manual for two years now. I grin every time I turn the key and hear that normally aspirated 6 jump to life. I've never felt connected to a car like this one. There may be nuances between these three, but I absolutely love the feeling of driving my Cayman S. You can't go wrong with this car!
the best moment in time is the 981 - looks best of them, flat 6 - all the right options - Paul, don't sell it ever! Get a 2nd car if you must but keep the GTS.
No car videos feature better engine sounds than what you guys capture. I love that there are no GoPros stuck on the outside of the cars. All exterior action shots are captured from a chase car or drone or roadside...the best!
well, 981 doesn't really have the prettiest rear. 791 is an improvement but still, I feel like it could do better. I also hate the centre exhaust. It makes the car look cheap and ruins the esthetic. Thank god they split up the exhaust for the 2021 GTS model.
All the Cayman gens are great, but I've got a lot of love for the 987. 981 isn't a bad choice either, a good increase in power and kept the classic Porsche flat-6.
I remember watching your black Cayman review before buying my first Cayman. Now I'm on the 987.2S in manual, and everything spoken in this review is right. You feel the steering wheel column connected to the wheels through your hands, the 987 hydraulic rack gives you a ton of feedback, especially when it gets serious with the front wheels, it will brake your hands if you have the wrong accident. That's where the magic with the Cayman happens, because the car sits on the road in a very refined way. It has enough mass to feel respectable and safe. Then you step on it and in the curve the car feels responsive, lively, short - like a backpack. This wheelbase, the proportion and the simple suspension setup, not too wide 265 tires, all make it just the right experience, it's quite astounding because when you understand it you see how this is the perfect formula for a drivers car. Damping in my S is just right for me to daily it with pleasure. And then with a blip of the gas pedal you have a motorbike like experience. It's not only the power, it's the sound, the way the suspension flexes, the vibration. It's one of the true great sports cars of all time.
I bought my 987.2 base Cayman on the cheap and was just going to flip it for a quick buck. That was 4 years ago. I love this car! Another fantastic episode! Keep em coming!
987.2 is a timeless classic. In a world where everything has gone digital and touch sensitive, somewhat sterile. 987s offer the classic sports car feel and package. Future classic...
@@2gj906 987.2 is all Caymans from 2009-2012, including the base, S, and R (2012 only). But, I assume you're saying that the R is more exclusive (only 1621 made) and more of a future classic (cost $50k-60k) than the base and the S, which I believe you're right. But, at twice the price, with no A/C or radio, I chose the S.
I went from a 987.1S to a 718S (both manuals). The lesser appeal to a lot of people for the 718 got me a great deal on one. My 987.1 sounded better than the 718 does, but everything else is better on the new one. And the auto rev matching is heavenly. Sure, I can heel-toe, but not as consistent as the 718 can do it for me. You guys should do the same series with all manual cars :)
Just bought an old boxter s. Next year I plan to add an older cayman s to my collection. Great videos. Glad to see you guys going strong and love your work..
I use to have a 718 GTS....I have a 992 Base and a few other Porsches but I'm watching you guys now to live Vicariously.....I have little kids and can never get out to drive. Those Aspens are great!
definitely, 981 GTS will be the go-to one in the future especially when Naturally aspirated sports cars with great sound become impossible to get and are not produced anymore. 987 R closely after. But 981 is the better middle ground that can age better from a design, reliability, and support perspective.
Nate Crabtree nope, I disagree and here’s the technicals to why: 718 GTS 4.0 sounds worse than 981 GTS (especially with the particulate filter). Near non-existent noise below 4000 rpm but due to sharing the same horrible gear ratios as the 981 (also 981's big flaw too imo), except with even more horsepower. Slow gearing with even more horsepower means that to hear that engine you’re in 100% jail speeds. Whereas the 981 makes nice sound anywhere past 2000 rpm and even 2000rpm makes a grumbly sound (but arguably a drone sound, still better than nothing). While its still got horrible gearing, at least you still get to hear something. And since it has less horsepower, you can actually ride the horrid gears and end up in less speed than hte 718 4.0 GTS. Espeically when the day comes where none of these cars are competitive at 0-60, this will matter even more. Secondly, 718 GTS 4.0 is built on an engine complying with newer emission standards and laws. It also has much less induction noise as well. Thirdly, 718 GTS 4.0 price point is much higher. As high if not more than 981 GT4 if we were to travel back in time. And I am referring to average samples around the market, not starting price (which is a horrible indication for porsches). Also I’m assuming everyone already knows this. The GTS “4.0” ‘s 4.0 engine is not the GT3 4.0 engine. It’s a much cheaper to produce engine based on the twin turbo flat 6 used in 991.2 and 992.1 911s. But stripped its turbos and bored and stroked up to 4.0. Which is why it sounds so bland.
@@ZDY66666 So it’s the sound? That’s it? Like, when people complain about turbocharging these days, I can usually understand that being due to the performance difference and the way the car delivers power. The sound is probably one of the last things that matters. The emotion and driving experience of an engine is about the way the engine performs and feels. And frankly, the sound isn’t really a turn-off for me. A naturally aspirated flat-six on its own is enough for me.
As an owner of a 981cs for the past 6+ years and having driven the 718bs for a day, I can say that I'd stick with the 981cs. 718bs felt like a better car in terms of acceleration, suspension, and overall handling. The 981cs is just a better Porsche for me. Would love to experience the 987r.
Such a great review - Thank you guys . I have never loved a car as much as my 987 manual 6. I had a 981 for a year, and only test-drove a 718 PDK - but came back to the 987. Also, I think it's the most beautiful of the lot . But any Cayman - with that mid-engine Porsche magic - can't go wrong.
Great comparison. I've driven all extensively, and found the 987 is by far the most communicative and the best choice for a weekend car. Extra refinement of the 981 worth considering for a daily or for long distances. I can't imagine paying more for a 718 and losing that beautiful sound. My solution was to take the 981 budget (~$35k) and buy a 987 for weekends + and a Golf GTI for practical stuff/long distance. The greatest weekend fun in the Cayman + serious 4-seat practicality (and still a chunk of fun!) the rest of the time. Regularly driving two very different types of car is enjoyable too. Don't think there's any going back to the feel of the 987, so sadly think this is the last Porsche I'll own. I love it.
I’ve just been sent a link to this video by a subscriber as I run a Cayman focused YT channel. This is going to be an epic video!! Disclaimer, I own a 987.2 CS ;-)
@@MAXREVS Max...you know..I think you have convinced me that 911's are not in my future. I am so happy with my 981 GTS. I can't even imagine what would come next. Probably a 2020 718 GTS in 2026.
@@capuchinseven people just don`t like the sound of the four cylinder, not to mention the feel. No turbo eithir makes the earlier models feel more sporting fun as you have to work the engine a bit more.
I just picked up 2018 Cayman S. In 2 weeks already had neighbours say it is loud....louder than my prior boxster 981 with PSE. Driving dynamics....no comparison. 718 all the way
I think this originally aired about 3 years ago. You guys really nailed it by choosing the Cayman R. It's a pretty rare car and has held it's value amazingly well. I've been trying to buy one, and many, especially the launch color peridot green, are selling for close to original sticker price.
I liked this review a lot! You guys know what you are talking about: a very honest view on the different generations. Also: the sound quality is superb! It's something very rare to catch the sound in such a good way in a video. Thank you very much! Keep up the good work.
@@mohibzafar4585 Not surprising. The original 987 test mule was a 911 Cabriolet! Pinky Lai got it right first time; it has the classic Porsche styling thats absolutely timeless.
Andrew Vasilakes an engine can get fixed. That’s not an issue. Here we are talking about driving pleasure. If you want a car that doesn’t break get yourself a Toyota. I don’t want to argue, but that’s the truth.
Paul and Todd is actually the same person split in two, the split personalities aside (which i love) , you can also see it by looking at their hair line, they complete each other like a jigsaw piece to its slot, I love it.
My thought exactly... Porsches numbering scheme and the fact that all three generations look so similar made it tough to tell which generation you were in each time you jumped to the next car. I need to watch it again and pay more attention to the details!
Great review as always... Recently picked up a used 2018 Cayman S (6 spd with every performance option ticked) and it is such an amazing car on the street and track. Let the purist hate on the 4 cylinder and go pick one up for a deal used and drive the crap out of it.
So glad that I discovered this channel. Really like these guys, their reviews and that they are just themselves. As a former Top Gear UK fan, I have seen so many people, shows and UA-cam channels try to recreate the dynamic of the hosts on that show instead of just being themselves. That is just difficult to watch. However, watching these guys, their takes and reviews just works and is refreshing. Thanks for filling that gap of a great automotive channel / show for car enthusiasts.
I’ve been lucky enough to own all 3 Cayman generations. My latest 718 is the best of the bunch out of all 3. Why? Because, in my opinion, the 718 has better handling, better acceleration, better tech & the best interior of all 3. I’m impressed whenever I’m behind the wheel & look forward to the next Cayman generation.
I'm very seriously considering the 718 300HP 2.0L but thinking that I might miss out a whole lot from the 981 flat 6 341hp. Both PDK. I live in a rather small city with fair amount of country roads Hope you can sway me to the 718 and not much im missing fr d inline 6 and the sound. But I can be seduced by the inline 6 and the sound. Which has better throttle response?
I've only really heard people call the 718 underrated, never the 981 at least compared to other Caymans. They're all underrated by 911 fans of course. What I definitely haven't heard though is anyone calling a Cayman overrated. They're definitely not perfect cars, but right now I can't think of a car I'd rather have than a 981S (which is good because I just spent a lot of money on one!).
Porsche CEO, - “if you want to be the fastest, the most control of the car, using the full potential of the car, there’s nothing better than the double-clutch, the PDK. It doesn’t get any better,”
I had a 97 C4S, had it for about 3 years, then got tired of it and sold it (big mistake given current prices..) and got a Lotus Elise, had that for about 3 years as well. Then got a new 2011 Cayman 987 and I STILL have it because I've never been bored by it. Still a delight every time I drive it.
@@jankay8569 not in the know but I would assume they probably had a exclusive period for tv use in their contract. As those expire, they are adding episodes to youtube
I waited 3 years before I plucked down for my 981 Cayman. I still think it was the greatest looking Cayman and I still think it is. The 987 just drooped too much, especially the rear end as well as the side view.
I was shopping 981S vs 987.2S in manual....ended up with a 2012 987.2 S and couldn't be happier. Coming from an Elise and 4C background, I actually preferred the drive in the 987.2. The 981's are great but they don't feel as nimble or raw as the 987's. Also I prefer the way the front looks on the 981 but the rest of the car looks better on the 987, especially from the back. My 2012 is over 10 years old and has 31k miles but no rattles or creaks anywhere. Build quality is excellent.
The 987 sounds like the sweet spot for price to performance. How reliable are they for a weekend drives ? any major issues I should know about? Since I consider a lightly used one.
This seems like a great video I like what you guys were saying but as a beginner Porsche Enthusiast the numbers are still confusing to me and I didn't know what car you guys were reviewing at the time. I couldn't tell the difference
Sorry for any confusion. And the similar colors and small interior changes add to the problem. But the exterior shots are your guide - each car is taken in sections, and we show exterior Shots of one car becoming the other when we change the generation in discussion. If you are unsure which one we are taking about, the next exterior shot will clarify. Thanks for the feedback, and we appreciate you watching!
Another great episode! Keep-em coming guys! Love my 2009 987.2 manual. So much fun to drive. It’s hard to stop putting miles on it. Like my Viper it’s a hooligan car. And there is definitely a new 4.0 Cayman or maybe Boxter in my future.
Just picked up a manual 981, also a Utah native, those are some choice roads, luckily I recognized most of them, thanks for sorting out my coming weekend plans!
I loved my Cayman R but in the suburbs, pot holes and bad roads are so much more acceptable in a GT4 981....and then there's everything else, almost the same weight in my stripped GT4 as the R, but significantly more HP, and the sound....wow. great job on this video.
Ahhh....love the video. Sometimes I feel like my 981 is the unwanted stepchild of Porsche. Visited the factory and could not find anything 981 (books, models, stickers...). Such a great car all but I just wish the new models could still house a roof rack for extra storage. Not sure why they decided to do away with that when the 911 still has the mounts for the roof rack. Give me that and a sunroof and bliss.
I own a 987.1 it's a 5 speed manual and it's a beautiful car that I love. It's not a S model but it's still a blast to drive. I did all the upgrades that were possible like seats and exhaust and suspension but I didn't touch anything related to the engine because I believe it's perfect as is.
Just comes down to priorities and budget. For me 981 S/GTS is what I’m targeting as it’s kind of the middle ground option. 718 GTS 4.0 is the dream but sadly way out of my price range.
Just came across this. The 718 is the Marketing name. If you are going to refer to the two previous models by their respective Type numbers, then the 718 should be referred to as it's Type number, which is 982. Just saying.
i'm a cayman fan that's never driven one. but that doesn't mean i don't have a favorite, of course. :) mine is the manual transmission 2009-2012 cayman S. the engine problems were behind it, with a larger displacement and power of the S version and what i consider minimal but tasteful improvements in the aesthetics, IMO it's the best. they didn't sell many of them during those years due to the recession and can be very difficult to find.
987 still feels the most connected and engaging. I have driven pretty much every Cayman model to date. As a plus the 987 are starting to appreciate nicely behind the 911 market which has gone bonkers lately. The smaller size, hydraulic steering and lines of the 987 are big selling points over the newer ones.
You guys do absolute best "in depth" reviews on cars that are for driving enthusiasts! I've tried & failed to aquire an M2CS bcuz I really need adaptive suspension (I don't get in my M2Comp). The Cayman GTS is high on my radar due to pre-owned Caymans not dropping enough in value. Porsche needs to include more options w/ base units (they're options lists are getting annoying & stupid). Hence why I've put a deposit down for a Lotus Emira! Can't wait to see your review on that mid engine Cayman competitor!
I got to drive a 2014. I'd dropped in just to loop the parking lot, but saw salesman walk outside so I asked a few questions. Then he let me sit inside. Then he offered a drive. OMG that was an absolute JOY to drive! Further reinforced that I'm going to buy a Porsche...
Brilliant review, thank you. Ok, for me, and I sell Porsche, the base 718 Cayman, as bang for buck, beats them all. Fair to say, in my country, Australia, taxes kill us, so value for money is base 718/992, saving $32k/$42k respectively makes base sports cars best. My opinion of 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 is that, yes, the return to flat 6 N/A is great, but the 2.5T flat 4, is a brilliant engine. The sound? well, I’ve never had a problem with it. As for electric steering, on road and track, I reckon it’s way better than hydraulic. That’s just my opinion.
You really can't go wrong with any Cayman. I think you lose a lot of engagement by not testing them in as MTs. That's where the 981S really shines. I choose to DD one and will gladly upgrade to a 4.0L GTS MT when they drop.
After a lifetime of loud and boisterous automobiles, the 718 appeals to me. The turbo is like the hand of god. From any RPM, the twist is there and no need to rap out the motor. Coupled with the PDK, and the lightweight body, you're good to go.
When I was shopping for a boxster/cayman, the 987.2 generation got ruled out because of the PDK tuning, and the exhaust noise. There's a sizable step up in both departments with the 981 (and a stiffer chassis to boot). While I noticed the steering differences, the trans tuning was the most noticeable part for me. I liked the 987.2, but I LOVE my 981 (S).
I have driven all three and agree entirely with Todd's conclusion. I actually had a 981 GTS and sold it to buy a a 987.2 Black Edition with the same engine as the R. The 987.2 is way better than the 981. And the 718's driving feel and suspension are also much better than that of the 981.

I picked up my 981 GTS back in December to replace my ATS-V (which replaced my M235i). You chose wisely and made a great decision!
So glad I just bought 987 cayman what a beauty of a car!
I've got a 981 GTS. The sound totally consumes you at higher RPM. Even at low RPM, the growl and bangs always keep a smile on your face.
2.5k RPM...it gargles. Mmmmmmmm.
Lows revs sounds like someone slurping the end of thier milkshake with a straw
Great video as ever. Nice to see a comparison of these. Personally I think Porsche got it right straight out of the box. 987 for me. And BTW those roads you're on are amazing!
Gts 4.0 is what you needed here for a true comparison
Very true.
Sure. It would also sound the worst.
@@Meatwad650 No one really ever comments on the 4.0 GTS sound in their review videos, I wonder why!!
@@drewmorg. I know, right? They might be forced to admit it wasn't all about the number of cylinders...
from the criteria they used to pick the 987 I do think the 4.0 GTS would win.
Likewise! IMO the 2.7 is plenty fast for the public road, and means you can rev it out to hear that flat-6 noise longer. Have fun.
The 2.7 really is a gem. You can rev it out everyday.
I just got a 2007 2.7 5 speed cayman. It's amazing
I love the 2.7 beautiful car
It's like you gentlemen knew I have spent my entire week looking at 981 and 718 Caymans 👍
I know what you mean, I owned a 2014 981 (2.7) and now a 2016 981 GTS :) Test drove the 718 S, didn't like it.
the best moment in time is the 981 - looks best of them, flat 6 - all the right options - Paul, don't sell it ever! Get a 2nd car if you must but keep the GTS.
Prefer the back end of the 987 to the 981 myself, but the rest of the 981 is a nice small tick nicer. More developed interior too.
987.1 is the moment in time car. End.
No car videos feature better engine sounds than what you guys capture. I love that there are no GoPros stuck on the outside of the cars. All exterior action shots are captured from a chase car or drone or roadside...the best!
Thank you for noticing - it creates extra work, but we think it's important. Glad to have you watching!
Porsche 987 styling is perfection. Hydraulic steering is ace. They got it right the first time. The moment in time car.
"Show me an angle that isn't delicious." Now that's Tshirt material!
You beat me to saying that....
well, 981 doesn't really have the prettiest rear. 791 is an improvement but still, I feel like it could do better. I also hate the centre exhaust. It makes the car look cheap and ruins the esthetic. Thank god they split up the exhaust for the 2021 GTS model.
@@jankay8569 981 has the perfect rear. It's in the back.
Uh greed.
Facts.
I'm going to take this personally.
I'd argue the first gen R is more of a future classic than the 987.2, definitely a lot more exclusive, you don't see them that often in the wild
@@Lucky008aau You're right the way R is specced isn't my first choice either, it's just a Porschephile's Special
I love my 987.2. Best sound, best steering, best braking; hardly any breaking. No IMS issues.
718 gts 4.0...
Nate Crabtree nope, I disagree and here’s the technicals to why:
718 GTS 4.0 sounds worse than 981 GTS (especially with the particulate filter).
I agree. My dad bought a 981 gts and dang it sounds good...
981 is the ugliest generation too bulky
Well done guys. So refreshing to see journalists not poopoo the 718’s flat four. ...but I’d still option mine as a 718 GTS 4.0
My god, this is the best video on UA-cam. Proud owner of a Cayman 987.2. What a review,!

Correct. End of discussion.
I love it.

Funnily, each generation of Cayman can and will be argued as the underrated one.

987 for me, but I'm biased 😉
Ahhh....love the video. Sometimes I feel like my 981 is the unwanted stepchild of Porsche. Visited the factory and could not find anything 981 (books, models, stickers...). Such a great car all but I just wish the new models could still house a roof rack for extra storage. Not sure why they decided to do away with that when the 911 still has the mounts for the roof rack. Give me that and a sunroof and bliss.

Just comes down to priorities and budget. For me 981 S/GTS is what I’m targeting as it’s kind of the middle ground option. 718 GTS 4.0 is the dream but sadly way out of my price range.
I want a 981 s bad thats what im saving for from now on
Just came across this.
mine is the manual transmission 2009-2012 cayman S. the engine problems were behind it, with a larger displacement and power of the S version and what i consider minimal but tasteful improvements in the aesthetics, IMO it's the best. they didn't sell many of them during those years due to the recession and can be very difficult to find.
Your suspicions are completely correct. I’ve owned both. Go drive one. Go find one. And if at all possible, go buy one.
Clearly 100% correct. Done

Stunning cinematography. Well done gentleman.
987 is easily my favorite gen!
As you already know, love you guys' videos to bits. Amazing scenery, information and of course entertaining.
Yep just test drove both and totally agree
I have driven all three and agree entirely with Todd's conclusion. I actually had a 981 GTS and sold it to buy a a 987.2 Black Edition with the same engine as the R. The 987.2 is way better than the 981. And the 718's driving feel and suspension are also much better than that of the 981.
how does the 987.1 differ from the 987.2? Is that the 2006 compared to the 2009?
@@1ROCKY89 9A1 engine with direct injection; more power & torque, bulletproof.
The 987.2 introduced the PDK as well, and updated electronics, LED DRLs and taillights.
Great topic and video. I'm a Corvette enthusiast but am most likely to cross shop a Cayman.
"Stop being babies about it..."
Bold talk coming from the Sonic commercial bois... :p
Wait, Paul or Todd were in a Sonic commercial (the restaurant, I mean)?
@@mystery8820 No, but they strongly resemble the Sonic duo in both appearance and interaction. I enjoy watching Todd and Paul, just poking some fun. :p
I love my 987S, Race headers, sports exhaust, GT3 throttle body and plenum+tune absolutely magic. Throw in an extended sump and third radiator, H&R lowered springs, wheel spacers and its the most engaging car sensible money can buy. Sounds fantastic, just like a cup car.
how did you get rid of the CEL? if you have no cats?
