Fixing The Handling Of My Cayman | Part 2 Porsche Alignment

  • Ever since my front coolant system was replaced due to leaking hoses, the handling of my Porsche Cayman 987.2 Sport hasn't quite been the same. It's got to be said, many wouldn't bother investigating this "minor" handling issue further, but I wasn't happy with my car. That's not the Max Revs way of life...
    The problem is that I have play in the steering wheel, with a dead and indeterminate spot around the straight ahead position when on the move.
    It couldn't be wheel alignment, as Porsche Brooklands did the wheel alignment twice, and recently when I visited an independent garage, I had the wheel alignment done again. The most recent alignment only one week prior to this video being made, all on the Hunter Hawkeye.
    Join me in part 2 of this video where I find out what's wrong with my Porsche Cayman, as I visit the Porsche handling experts at ‪@centergravitychassistuning‬www.centregravi...
    FYI. I have no business interests with Centre Gravity, and believe me I paid full price. They're not cheap, but then the best in life rarely is.
    Enjoying Life & Cars To The MAX!!

    This guy’s very knowledgeable and great at explaining things simply. I just replaced my front inner/outer tie rods (not fun) and sway bar links only for the alignment shop to tell me they can’t get the rear wheels to spec and are maxed out. This will help me diagnose the problem

    Very interesting video Max. Can’t wait for part 3! unfortunately, with Porsche’s, all you need to do is spend a lot of
    Money on them and then they are right...

    Looks all to precision to me and which is great once you leave and I’m sure you will see a difference. My only concern is that living and driving around just outside London there are so many potholes that even over a short period the geometry will be out again.

    Fantastic video Max. I've read about Centre Gravities capabilities so it's good to see them in action. I too have a 2009 987.2, my inner rear coffin arm bushes look like you old ones, I bet the rest of the suspension will have similar wear.

    Hi Max, a very interesting series of videos 👍. I've recently had a Meyle front left control / coffin arm fitted to my 987 gen 2 cayman as the ball joint started to creek and I've noticed the set up doesn't feel the same and the car is pulling to the left slightly. I've spoken to another Specialist that offers a Beissbarth wheel alignment service and they recommended that I have the front right coffin arm replaced as the Meyle product is slightly different in size when compared to the original parts, which is most likely why the car set up feels different. Originally I wanted to fit the original Porsche part however the Porsche specialist that fitted the left arm talked me into fitting the Meyle product as he believed they were vertually identical parts. I'm starting to find out how costly Porsche ownership can be as I've also recently had to replace the hand brake shoes, from now on I'm only parking the car in gear 😭

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing this information... after enquiries, this is to be expected when you change only one side of the car. If you change both sides with Meyle, you should be OK. However if only one side was faulty... it could have been cheaper to have gone original Porsche just for one side... we all live and we learn the expensive way...

      @@MAXREVS During lockdown my car was parked on the drive for three to four weeks with the hand brake on. When I came to drive it the wheels had locked, I gently rocked it back and forth and unlocked the wheels, however I got around 50 mts down the road and heard an almighty clunking sound to the rear of the car. I already had the car booked in for a service a couple of days later and asked them to remove the rear wheels. Upon further inspection I had pulled the lining away from the hand brake shoes therefore they had to be replaced and a slight hand brake adjustment at a cost of £175. The past couple of weeks I've noticed a slight grinding noise / high pitch squeak coming from the passenger rear wheel. I'm thinking it can't be the hand braking system making the noise as it's recently been repaired and the back wheels greased up etc. Like you I can't identify the noise, I've tried heavy braking to clean off the discs however I still hear the noise at low speeds 🤔

    You should be able to achieve better than a new car feeling, standard geo will understeer, some tweeks, particularly if you can accept a bit of tyre wear will improve the drive significantly

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  3 роки тому

      Yeah, you sound like you know your stuff. Centre of gravity have a chat with you about what you’re looking to achieve from the handling, and tune accordingly. I’d probably take a new Cayman to them straight from a dealership to get it dialled in how I like it.

    • @MAXREVS

      Hi there, cannot honestly say I have noticed any difference. Then again I don’t track my car. I know the Cayman R has slightly stiffer anti-roll bars compared to my Cayman Sport, so I wanted a bit of the Cayman R setup. Also I wanted new bushes on my anti-roll bars.

    Torque-to-yield bolts should never be reused - once you go past the yield point, they'll become weakened and won't effectively apply the proper clamp load if they're reused. At 26:28 you lost me. Nice advertisement. Please do not put a box wrench on my cam or strut bolt unless the next step is a crusher. You put the car through its paces and the rear alignment is correct especially on that side. Test the rear for bushing movement when it is in the air.
