Alot of us didn't realize, we were living in a time, when the best music ever written or sung was being played.
Being surrounded by so much talent, & saturated with so much good music, it was only natural for us to take it for granted. Long live the 70's. More than just great music, bad fashion, & a series of historic events. It is an open minded attitude; it is neighborly love; it is acceptance & respect of viewpoints & of faiths unlike ones own. It is unity & friendliness, & hospitality. The love of the greater number has cooled off in the decades since, just as Jesus warned. But the 70's still live on, because _WE ARE THE 70's, & WE REMAIN UNCHANGED_
Yeah, we did!
I was born in 1987 and I agree 60’s-80’s were the best 50’s and 90’s were also solid.
@magnificentmuttley154 great comment loved the 70s what a decade to live through ❤
I believed when it started to Ho away fast. I'll go my grave listening.to.the Greatest music Ever Written for the times . Long Live the Band and their
Brothers in this Genre of Rock Roll Blues,And Country Folk all rolled up into One of kind Bands and Lyrics. God Bless our Youth. ✌️🙏💙🩷‼️
Robbie Robertson, you will be missed. "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" are two of my favourite songs ever. One of the greatest musical geniuses to grace this Earth.
Amen
Levon was great as they all were, but Robbie FKD the whole band for money and a spotlight for credit he didn’t deserve. The band was the band no front man. Robbie copyrighted all these songs he didn’t write also
I still get a thrill down my spine when Pop Staples starts off with ' Go down Moses....'
His contribution is beautiful. What a tribute to the Ontario white boy who wrote a song this great choral family got right away.
My favorite scene in the movie. Like Mavis whispers at the end, “beautiful”.
I one-hundred percent agree.
this is still literally to this day the most artfully done piece of concert cinematography ever
delete the word 'concert'
Stop making sense would like a word
I am so blessed to be a child of the sixties. What amazing times and music!
We never knew how good we had it.
@@ianmackie8959 You got that right.
Levon said in his autobiography Pop Staples really wanted to sing that third "Go Down Moses" verse, I'd say he killed it.
Great, now I’m gonna spend double the tears every time his part comes in.
This is the best version of this song. This was the era of great musicians.
@@direwolf8124 I mean, the Staple sings . . what else can you say? Simply a swirling vortex of powerful music and love.
Thank You for telling everyone about Levon's book 💜💜
Mavis Staples makes an art out of breathing in. Insane, how much she kills in this track, even as a background singer.
...And since Mavis & Pop individually sang a stanza (thats not a verse, but usually _four_ verses) of lead vocals, that makes them supporting singers, too. Not just backing vocalists... The Staples Family. Wow! What an everlasting treasure. Someone earlier in this comment section said 100 years from now people will still be in awe of this performance. Theyre right. This is no ordinary music. It's the gift that outlasts us all & keeps right on giving. I cant think of a better Soul or Rock number that should stay in the Classic Top 40 for the next 100 years
Beautifully said. Mavis is an absolute Gem.
She gave a talk at our local public Library maybe three years ago. What a delightful woman.
I love Mavis Staples' voice. This is a wonderful collaboration.
Beautiful voice
In the beginning it feels like a sports car driving 5 mph just waiting to go, and she lets up a bit, just yes 👌
I do its the best band after GD
the admiration that the Pop's daughters have for him is inspiring :)
She got huge. Literally
No one did this song finer than Levon
I can't get over how this is shot like a feature film.
SugaryCoyote its from a feature film
That's Scorsese for ya
more or less was
Power of film emulsion.
@@Tunavi not really, he made a mess of Rolling Thunder.
You can see in their faces the profound respect and admiration all the artists have for each other. A truly once in a lifetime experience for them and the audience.
I’m 78 and here in 2024. Still great 😊

This is what Aretha referred to when she spoke of getting the spirit in the dark. People moving, everybody grooving just getting the spirit in the dark. God bless every single one of them for crossing music, genre and colour lines for making this historic piece of art. And Mavis for making us whole.
Aretha, one of e finest artists to grace our planet. Im a 65 year old man and I cried when she left us.
And now beloved Robbie is gone too. Rest in peace brother. What a legacy. "We'll be marching in the night parade."
Oh Man Robbie. Thanks for the decades of great music. Sad day for music. RIP
Pops' voice is like sunlight emerging from the clouds, wow.
Rick Danko in this gives me life.
That last note....."Beautiful."
Just the best.
I just heard " beautiful "whispered into the mic for the 1st time after 45years of playing this song 😂❤😅
This is basically the greatest thing ever.
At the very end you can hear Mavis Staples say 'Beautiful' Such a a great song done so well.
When Mavis whispers beautiful, My heart unravels!
who’s listening to this in 2020! 🔥🔥✌🏻
ME
👍👍👍👍
I would be listening to this song if it were 2222.
Right here with ya
I am. I remember them from back in 1993 - somewhere along the road I forgot about this song - until June 2020 - What a song, You just do not hear this song on the radio anymore
Wow. I found the greatest masterpiece on UA-cam.
I was only 14 when the last waltz was released and introduced me to the wonderful world of music, must have seen it more than 100 times! Thank you Boys for being one of the greatest bands in the world!
Same here
I never get tired of watching this video.
Thank you so very much Martin Scorsese for preserving this astounding concert, a little slice of heaven.
Good God, this looks and sounds like it could have been made yesterday. That, and it is somewhow even more tight than the original studio recording. Props to all.
If you look at the list of cameramen, it’s a who’s who of 1970 cinematographers
Just fyi, I've read a lot wa overdubbed.
I saw this at the theater here in Charleston WV when it first came out. Back when a theater was an experience. Large auditorium with fantastic acoustics and people had the respect to be quiet and let everyone hear and see a beautiful piece of art on the big screen. I was a teenager. Probably 14, didn’t have my drivers license yet. I absolutely loved every member of the band and every guest musician was incredible and was a treat. A once in a lifetime experience that was a gift to the people who love music and rock and roll. I wish Levon was still here and I could personally thank him for the lifetime of music I have lived since then. I will be 62 in December God willing. I wrote music, played music. Recorded music. Lived it and loved it. Watched my heroes come and go. Music is an ART FORM. And just like an artist who paints . I learned that you can write 100 songs and be fortunate to have a couple of excellent songs and maybe a few good and dozens not good at all . To put it kindly. I’m happy that I had a couple I consider masterpieces. Please forgive me for rambling. It comes with age and the way I lived my life and I inherited a lot of it. Anyway. I want to say Thank you to Robbie Robertson. He is one of my all time favorites. A class act. He has represented Rock and Roll with the highest degree of integrity. Incredibly talented, he has always been one of those people who you would say it’s obvious that his parents raised him right. Thank you for being a roll model . Someone I can look back at and remember that is where I got my start. My mother kept music in our home,. She played every instrument you could think of. From piano. autoharp. Guitar . accordion . Never had a lesson. My dad never played an instrument but he liked Johnny Cash and always had 8 track tapes playing in the Chevy on our beach trips. My big brother Bill the Preacher. Payed guitar and put bands together everywhere we went. He turned me on to iron butterfly, credence Clearwater revival. Simon and Garfunkel. Bob Dylan . Elton John. Always giving me albums for my birthday. One that always stood out was Aerosmith’s hardest drug fueled album when he was away in Seminary school. To anyone who reads this. Thank you for allowing me to ramble on. Because I’m at a point where every day is a gift. Even though times are not good like they used to be. But music still gives me hope.
The Aerosmith album was a Draw The Line and if this movie was released in 1978, I would have been 17, I would turn 18 in December. God Bless you all.
Pop Staples knocked it out of the park!
Singing with restraint. In a good way.
Yarp.
Do me a favor son, won't you stay and keep Anna lee company.
Pops and Danko back to back is like yen and yang. Roebuck barely gets above a whisper and Danko is just below a scream. One is barley swaying to the beat and the other is spazzing out with a bass in his hands. Perfect.
Travis Yates ....Danko looks to have had enough blow to kill some men. Like maybe 30 men.
Facts
R.I.P. Robbie we're still here for you in 2023
This.We need 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 of this
An absolutely great singer and human being.
RIP Levon
One of the most magnificent performances of all time.
So well said, i get goosebumps, incredible good
Rest in peace dear Robbie, The Band’s music has been the soundtrack of my life
Rest in peace all of them... :(
The Band, the 5 greatest musicians to ever play music
Dude. That harmonization at 2:51 with Levon is unmatched!
Never noticed Mavis whispers "beautiful!" right after the last note
One of the most beautifully crafted concert films ever made.
How awesome is it when Robbie cues Mavis, and the heavens open up with the second verse…
I think Robbie was enjoying it as much as we do.
@@Rockzilla404 it’s perfect in every way humanly possible
Quite simply, as good as music gets, and of course beautifully shot by Marty. Awe-inspiring stuff. People will be marvelling over this 100 years from now, I am certain.
Just what this world needs right now- Great music by great musicians- it’s nice to listen and take a break from the madness
I have memories of my parents dancing in the living room to this song when I was like 6 years old. Such an amazing song. Easily in the top 10 songs ever written in rock and roll.
Top Song ⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️
@@esthergarciamartinez2396Sure, it’s a contender at least. It’s a great creative soulful awesome song with lyrics that sound like the plot of a dream
For me the best concert docky ever produced by the greatest urban filmmaker in America - Mr. Scorsese. Just this one clip from THE LAST WALTZ should tell everyone how epic the BAND truly was during their reign in the business, and how this kind of talent like so many others from the mid 1960's thru to 1980 will never be again. R.I.P. Robbie, Levon, Rick and Richard and to the maestro of the group, Mr. Garth who I think is still alive - thanks for your sacred music! Peace.
Christ they were great
The old black man singing was born and raised on a Mississippi plantation in 1914. He worked with artists such as Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson. Crazy to see this mesh of talent.
The old black man is Pops Staples. The Staple Singers (Pop and his three daughters) have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Mavis Staples (featured in the video) is still performing at age 80.
That's absolutely brilliant. Dude saw the beginning of rock, the prime, and the end of it up close and personal.
@@piustwelfth And Bob Dylan actually proposed to her in the early 60s but she didn’t like the climate at the time…
@@piustwelfth My wife and I saw Mavis open for Dylan a few years ago and it was like going to church 😱😱👏🏾👏🏾
Mm mm Mavis is always instant goosebumps.
1:41 this camera shot is actually genius. I am grateful for this film
Man, sorry to say but I don't believe we will ever hear JAMS like this again. Feeling happy because I've heard it and sad that it is a lost art
Amen brother
For what its worth, _Soul_ is lost from music of the present day. But make no mistake, there are still thousands of us who were raised & effectively shaped by it. No, you wont hear it in todays music. But guys (& gals) like me still play that entire spectrum from the Era. Speaking for myself Im just one of millions of "boogie children" who were fed from the high chair with Soul, Motown, & Funk. And for those like me who are also musicians, its an everyday part of life... Genuine American Soul Music is still alive & well today, just not on the radio
Lost art agreed
I'll never forget seeing this in the cinema when it was released, still awesome as ever.
Most of us were lucky enough to share this world with Levon Helm.
This NEVER gets old.
Not to type a generic comment, but this is easily the greatest piece of music ever created, complimented by some of the best filming in history
IMO this is one of the greatest concerts of all time. I've heard studio albums that don't sound nearly as good as this live concert sound. BTW, it was filmed by legendary director, Martin Scorsese. (so that could have something to do with why the filming was so incredible 😉)
You're delusional.
"Greatest piece of music ever created"? Really?
Certainly one of the greatest....When something touches our soul on this level, it IS the greatest, until the next time something touches us...and the next....It's the magic of great music...
It's 2023, and Mavis is still touring, performing this song ("The Weight") and having more fun than ever!
P.S.: Pops had three beautiful daughters.
There's a lot to love about "The Last Waltz" but Pop Staples effortlessly murdering that verse is high on the list. Look how lovingly Scorsese brings the camera around behind him and stops right when he starts singing.
Dont be so, bloody dumb
Pops Staples is the epitome of talent and dignity.
I love how Robbie looks at Rick near the end like to say here we go buddy.
Pete is never wrong ....Coked out of his head.
best version ever....love Levon...but love the Staples...they make it to the next level :)
I wish I had listened to my friend in 1975 when he said that I should go see The Band. The musicians are good but together they make the most incredible music you ever heard. And he was right, they are still the best band ever. Each one puts his heart and soul into every song. They make you feel the emotion!
Best collaboration ever
Mavis sums it up in one whispered word at the end: "Beautiful!"
As a teenager in these modern times, who have nothing but rave and SoundCloud rap to listen to, I play the drums and recognize heroes like Levin Helm. Long live good music. Peace everybody ✌️
Respect from Norway.
🤘👌🤘
Nothing but rave and soundcloud? Check out car seat headrest, mac demarco. Good music is out there you have to look for it. It’s not spoon fed to you like it was in the last half of the 20th century
Damn, you were good Robbie! RIP!
Best goddamn drummer ever man. Rest in Power Levon
Thankfully someone thought to record it so we can still listen to it and watch it.
1:20 chills up my spine every time.
very much so
The past has become the future. Time is frozen with songs like this. I yearn for the days of my youth but at the same time look forward to what’s beyond. I hope that songs like this are always part of the equation.
What a Band! One of the greatest musical acts ever THEE BAND!
Saw the Last Waltz way back when in a theatre. A timeless invigorating musical happening.
One of the truly great pieces of music of the 20th century and when Mavis sings it with them, it’s the Greatest.
Danko’s verse is definitely the highlight for me
He just changes the whole song
There are 7 excellent vocalists on this stage. I love every verse, but Mavis......holy shit....I gotta give her the nod on this here.
He’s so high. I find him to be pathetic. Just a junkie jumping around and his voice cracking. Nah he’s a mess.
Pops my, favourite verse God rest them all
Fallen Angel showed Robbie to be a great visionary, even outside of where everybody knew him in The Band. I grew up in Ontario just a few years after these guys, and as a budding keyboard player got to know some people who worked with them. I liked The Band but their nostalgia about the defeated South did not resonate with me.
Decades later, I am astonished by the beauty of the songs in the Big Pink album. Rick Danko remains my favorite among The Band. He had this Canadian innocence when interpreting the stories behind the words of Robbie’s mystic songs. I understood “The Weight” for the first time in “The Last Waltz.” It is a story of existential sadness and loneliness, hidden in a cryptic lyric, its import overshadowed by the brilliance of their playing that distracted the listener from its underlying ennui. From their expression of defeat and loss in The Weight, we come to terms what awaits us all as we make our way through this vale of tears.
Of course the Staples Singers got it right away! They got this song and put their heats into it. As did Rick playing bass and singing a verse, with that catch in his voice that pierced me to my core. It took me a few decades, but finally I came to understand The Band’s uniqueness, borne of the lost grandeur of the South. From their accountings of loss and suffering and shattered dreams, we can find some some context for our own inevitable journey to Nazareth.
Man wish they were still around to preform such great music an sound makes my day brighter every time I hear one of their songs
Isnt it something, when you stop almost ANYTHING you're doing to stop n listen to legacy pro's like this ...
Mavis Staples: "Beautiful" I can only agree...
I'm 64 now...
This song will be played at my funeral...
Need I say more...
RIP!!!! We were blessed weren't we? Im choked up and melancholy over this loss not just of a great musician but that moment in time we've all lost. what's more profound to me is the fact no one knows who he even is in my house; 😞and these are 50-60 year olds?
Saw them live at U of Mich and probably the best concert I ever attended.
Greatest song of all time.
it is one of the best folk songs i have eve heard.
Bruce springsteen save the last dance for me
Bruce springsteen
Can anyone top this? I don't think so. They can't even matched it. THE greatest BAND ever!!!!
TIMELESS
one of the greatest concerts
Robert Petrie THE GREATEST
One of ? Nope the greatest
So sorry you are gone Levon.
Bob Dylan and the band
I agree, I love him so much!!
And rick
and rick,and richard
Wasnt he magnificent?
I sure am this was the best ever recording of this song. The Staple Singers sounded so beautiful, then Pops Staple comes in next qnd just makes you feel a chill. And if thats not awesome enough then Rick Danko from the Band steps out of no where and just is ready to go. If you havent seen the movie The Last Waltz you really are missing out. First Martin Scorsese produced it. And it was on a Thanksgiving night and it was their very last concert as The Band. But it also has Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Van Morrison and on and on and on
Its as if those supporting lead verses were written especially for mavis, & for pop 🥲. Hard to imagine the idea of inviting the staples family to join in this song came long after the song was actually written. It fits like a glove, doesnt it?
This is the definitive version of the song for me
Miss, you have unearthed to absolute gems, The Band is a good group but they're not where my attention lies. The Staple Singers though, Oh my word "I'll take you there." and "Respect Yourself." Were staples(no pun intended) in my home. I'm now 53 years old and Miss Mavis still can bring me to tears, joyfully to tears faster than any of the old soul singers. I often lament never having been able to meet Pops and Mavis.
This the best concert ever. Wish I was there; but Scorsese let us see a version of it.
I believe if Danko didn’t stand next to Robbie on stage he would be be filmed as much as Garth and Richard
This performance here with the Staples was not and is not from the live performance, Levon I heard felt the live performance was missing something, so they recorded this version with the Staple Singers
David Reeves ....Bingo! Bring da facts.
@@davidreeves3396 had a feeling it was pre recorded
thats right as my memorry still ok age 68 wanna see as its all as in concert i listen & look at auditorium got message from sašo aleksander šinkovec from slovenija capt town ljubljana
You are so right!! the late 60's and 70's were the best. I recently asked my musically talented 19 year old grandson who his favorite bands were, he told me his favorites were either retired or had already passed away...(the 60s, 70s Rock bands)
Mavis Staples gives me the chills every time.
I saw the Band in college as they prepared for this concert and also saw the movie..got the poster..the best concert ever..
Well done. One of my favorite versions
Danko gets my heart strings every time
Outstanding!! Mavis Staples' voice gives me goosebumps.
Real music 🎶
we have all seen UA-cam..from its O so many highs to its O so many lows ...but clips like this are what its all about, HD perfect sound with one of the.. IF not THE Greatest set of musicians to form a Band.....TIMELESS is the word im looking for
How about 2022......CLASSIC GREAT MUSIC FOR REAL LISTENERS
Rest in Peace Robbie Robertson.
Best song ever
We're going to improve The Weight .
Really how is that possible ???
Well we'll do the song live record it on film and have the Staple singers doing part of the lead and singing back up as well.
Oh my God, you guys are geniuses 💖💖💖💖
Very moving and touching song. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it
Sublime combination of two great musical groups!
