Chemistry between the guys is palpable. I often wondered if it was because they were Canadian. Plus that song is fabulous. I love the way Neil is quietly chewing gum in between singing but the way he looks at the other guys and smiles at them often tells me there’s chemistry. And then when they all gather at the same mic to sing it’s a lovely feeling.
if u have any type of sound system esp 5.1 with your tv, run out and buy the blu ray of this...reference quality audio mix. Heck Neil Diamonds growling vocals on Dry Your Eyes will shake your walls.
Joni was amazing...in the background ...providing..her heart....I've seen Dylan, Young but never Joni...I am sad that she didnt come to me in Australia.... she is amazing... equal to any of them...
Thank you man for letting me do this! Are you kidding! Are you kidding! I'd like to say before I start ,that it's one of the pleasures of my life to be able to be on this stage with these people tonight! And you can tell the respect both Neil Young and The Band have for each other is forever genuine and authentic.Magical moment in music history!
The Band could back any artist. Those 5 guys could play circles around most musicians. The Last Waltz is a great watch and listen. The top artists in top form celebrating The Band.
@Jonathan Birch Well that's not what other guitarist's say,Eric Clapton says Robbie is one of the best. Also Robbie wrote all the Bands music so he was an extremely important member
There is a town in north Ontario, With dream comfort memory to spare, And in my mind I still need a place to go, All my changes were there Blue, blue windows behind the stars, Yellow moon on the rise, Big birds flying across the sky, Throwing shadows on our eyes. Leave us Helpless, helpless, helpless Baby can you hear me now? The chains are locked and tied across the door, Baby, sing with me somehow. Blue, blue windows behind the stars, Yellow moon on the rise, Big birds flying across the sky, Throwing shadows on our eyes. Leave us Helpless, helpless, helpless.
Thank the heavens that Martin Scorsese helped this concert live on forever. It was recorded over a decade before I was born, yet at least once a year I revisit this glorious night. Truly timeless.
Read about the story of the Cocteau room backstage and what went on in there. lets just say mr young went skiing the white slopes a lot that night. He also had a huge white rock sitting in his nose right before he came out on stage in this song. Robbie said he saw it in post production and paid a lot of money out of his own pocket to cover up the huge white rock in Neils nose. You can see it on the 40th anniversary release of this movie though. Hope that explains it a bit better lolol
I was just turned 21, living in Sonoma, north of San Francisco & innocent and naively thought I would nab tickets for The Last Waltz, but I didn’t know where or how to get tickets, I remember how devastated I was, when I got home early afternoon, from a long early morning shift, to hear all the tickets sold out in 15 minutes.😮😢
A little before my time, but, was this the best concert ever?? When you consider the participants, Dylan, Clapton, Young, Mitchell,,, there are probably others I don't even know, and who was that Director, he is pretty well known right LoL
Is there any truth in the belief that because RR's voice was far from the best, that his microphone was purposely not operative or was turned to a low setting. Looking at the clip here, he tends to stand back from the mic. Hard to believe I know but it's a fact that he never took lead on any on the group's songs.
Notice he screws up mouthing here at near the beginning. Mouthing the wrong words. Danko straightened him up plus moved him back. Can't remember Robby actually singing.
Can someone explain was there a reason for putting Joni in the shadows instead of the stage? And I don't mean this in a omg/modern woke-sense just wondering about it.
“They got it now Robbie.”. The best part of this segment.
It's because Neil Young is so hammered, that no one realized which song he was singing
The talent on this stage is mind boggling. Joni Mitchell's parts give me goosebumps each time I listen.
Joni’s backing vocal and her silhouette are incredible both.
And so instantly recognizable!
My exact thoughts also!
It kinda surprised me actually
Joni is gold
Beautiful song, before screaming. And Thats the fact.
66 years old, playing mandolin along with some of the greatest musicians of my time.
The amount of star power at this one concert was absolutely astounding

Absolutely astonishing how many legendary artists were a part of this. None better than The Band
Robbie's looking up at the ceiling like he's in heaven aww haha
They should have started the clip 30 seconds earlier. The transition to Neil's vocals gives me goosebumps every time. You can see it on Robbie's face
Its brilliant he looks so happy. Unreal
Theyve got it now Robbie
Well said.
These guys can be totally tore up and still sound better than the stars today
So many excellent performances in The Last Waltz, but always love Neil & Joni, so many fantastic Canadian musicians!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Proof positive Neil Young is out of this world. It is unreal how real his music is.
Joni was amazing...in the background ...providing..her heart....I've seen Dylan, Young but never Joni...I am sad that she didnt come to me in Australia.... she is amazing... equal to any of them...
I was graduating high school then. It was a magical time for rock and roll.
Class of 78 here.
Me too , Dakota CC , Winnipeg
Damn Neil young knew how to write a tune I almost wanna visit Ontario now lol
Class of 81. To this day still gives me chills
I saw this Movie when it came out, in 1975 or6,and to this day, I still, get chills when Joni Mitchell starts Singing!
So Awesome!
Love Neil Young!! One of the great performances of The Last Waltz!!
Nasty human being

And neil had a cocaine booger in his nose, he finally wiped it away. Fun fact.
@@melissatyree566Yes , but he still told the complete truth of the matter .....
The Band could back any artist. Those 5 guys could play circles around most musicians.
The Last Waltz is a great watch and listen. The top artists in top form celebrating The Band.
Yes, they were musician's musicians if you know what I mean lol.
Yes but I think Neil young could keep up
@Jonathan Birch Well that's not what other guitarist's say,Eric Clapton says Robbie is one of the best. Also Robbie wrote all the Bands music so he was an extremely important member
@Jonathan Birch Insane... he is one of the most, if not the most, emotionally evocative players ever.
@jonathanbirch2022 ummmmmmmmm watch Eric Clapton break a guitar sting this very same concert and Robbie step right in to shred Claptons solo.
2021 and this song is perfect for how some of us feel these days - sweet grief, tender longing
No word

Thanks for that
Neil Young so super. My back pages with so many artists on stage together who could ever forget that
Never be another group of folks like this.
Thank the heavens that Martin Scorsese helped this concert live on forever. It was recorded over a decade before I was born, yet at least once a year I revisit this glorious night. Truly timeless.
Hell of a drug, hell of a concert
4 Canadian Legends!! 🇨🇦❤️
The swirling organ is Garth Hudson, Canadian too=5....
@@mikemyros4142 every member of The Band apart from Levon is Canadian
@@ScorseseGirlas are Neil and Joni
I can think of a few people in my life who I want to insist that they sit down and watch this and then I will ask, "Do you understand, now?"
The best version of a great tune, the ensemble of joni, neil, and the band spine tingling. All my changes happened there...❤❤❤
Great performance. The minute before the song started was also golden, as the band was trying to figure out the key or something like that.
They settled on C major. Most other versions A major.....
I think they got it now Robbie .
This make folk feel proud to be Canadian
Same! 🇨🇦❤️
I will never get enough of this of this, girl
Prefect I love it, I wish I could have been there
Pure country-folk-rock music!
Incredible Performance.
It is what you may call a jolly good example of country rock music
Joni Mitchel hatte eine großartige Stimme
Neil is a kid again, and so am I. Bless you boys.
Pure magic
jesus, Neil's jaw was all over the place that night! There must have been extremely good stuff going around back stage
0:52 tells you how good

Great Song by a Great Artist.
❤what another great band now gone thank God and I mean this we can see it relive it. ❤
Canada’s best
Love it. Soundtrack to my childhood. Some performance from Neil being right off his Parsnip, I couldn't strum a G in that state 👏
I've never seen Neil young so happy

Incredible take!
Coke booger is the real star
It was the ‘70’s man!
Back when it was 79 percent rather than 7 percent.
Pure as the driven snow
La mejor etapa de mi vida, la que me acompaña cuando necesito escapar de esta realidad!!!
My favorite by Neil.
I was there...unforgettable
auch Neil Young war ein genialer Sänger und Gitarrist
Joni we love you now more than ever !🙏🙏👍❤️❤️

"This one starts off real slow then fizzles out altogether". Classic Neil Young
What's amazing is the bands attitude to back these people only Keith Richards has that ability to step back and be part the Band is amazing
Amazing.
Joni and Neil 🖤🖤
great smiles everywhere
the event was epic
The Band is great!
Wait a minute ! Was that Joni Mitchell singing in the shadows in the background ???
So good.
I like how they edited the 8 ball coke bugger Neil Young had hanging off his nose😂😂😂
Love them all!
Haunting ❤
EL MEJOR DUO.
Pure gold
his voice!!!
In my mind, we all have a Home, remember that, 🙂🙏❤️
I saw the rock in the nose, but now I so want to see Neil's tee-shirt! I heard it was quite a thing.... For those who might know....
They got it now Robbie
they all enjoyed it
And this version doesn't edit out the dot of coke on Neil's nose
yikes
Lmao his jaw was swinging through the hole song.
You're not kidding must of been some raw dog
@@Kegga_6 every single person on the stage!
Look at Neil during the song I Shall Be Released. Dude be really stoned out of his mind. lmao
0:52 - Canadian bios Neil and Rick exchange “been there” looks as Neil sings “Helpless.”
Canadian Treasures. Thanks to Martin Scorsese to create the Last Waltz.

Neil Young was beyond stoned. Lol.
Whos the goof on the left that keeps ogling over NY? Looks like a disco boy from NYC whos absolutely in love with Neil
Straight from the Deja Vu LP with David Crosby, Steven Stills and Graham Nash
Even with the coke booger this is timeless.
Quite good video, awesome!
Not bad for practically all Canucks :)
Take me back please, to a better time, when we had "normal" governent and not a dictatorship-in-the-making. Good music and peace, please.
Yeah, a Biden puppet dictatorship would be devastating
can't wait to see Don the con in. Epstein's jail cell

Roach clips hanging on Neil's shoulder :)
They cut the best part out at the start where Neil Young says "They got it now Robbie"
EVERYT IME I SEE THIS GUY HE REMINDS OF SOME DRUNK FROM THE STREETS ON KENORA ONTARIO
I see Neil was a lefty
LMFAOOOO
Notice the notes taped to the top of Neil's guitar. At about 2:40, not sure what for. Great music, glad I lived in the 60s and 70s
play list
At 1:45 you can see the cocaine booger dripping from 'Ol Neils nose!😂
As absolutely coked out as Neil was here, what a performance he put on.
Great song/performance tho
Neil Young within CSNY was anyway the best of
not surprised Neil was in a band with Rick James at one point..Drocaine is a hell of a crug
Huge NY fan for decades, then he came to my small city and charged $200 per for a solo acoustic show...SMH. Still love the music though.
You can see some rocks that didn't get sniffed up still in Neil's nose lmao
ive always loved that neil looks like a serial killer
A better version of Deja Vu album by CSNY
The Band is much match for Neil Young's Helpless than CSN (The choir boys.)
sounds like the band aint got a clue what key neils playing in ..some baffled looks ...but hey its neil young lol
Joni…..
