I was fortunate to see them 13 times in their short existence including the Last Waltz always wanted to go to Levons barn but kids come life got in the way never made it.
✨💎 You got it, Chief. Perfectly expressed. I was too small to see them in concert back then, but I did grow up listening to them. Especially _Take A Load Off Fannie/ The Weight,_ most of all. You've just spoken for hundreds of thousands of people who were fortunate enough to experience Levon & his crew, back in the 70's & the 80's. God Bless You; may you have peace, always 💜
Everything about this song is gold, but when Rick Danko comes in at 1:55 and just belts it out, I just can't help but smile. I wish every recording of this song had him go that hard for that lyrics.
I literally was born & raised on A Cripple Creek in Kittrell, Tennessee. The old `crick runs thru my granddad's land out behind the barn. When I was a kid hearing these beautiful songs on the radio I honestly thought they were singing about our creek. That same land, I was told, once belonged to Bluegrass legend & Grand Ole Opry founder, Uncle Dave Macon. My whole family played bluegrass & old-time gospel music but, I just became a block-headed drummer. Nothing but love for The Band and everyone here enjoying this wonderful song.
"I sure wish I could yodel" Great improv sung with passion Levon Helm was at his finest in this concert, proving if any more proof was needed, what a great drummer he really was. Man, I miss THE BAND. Dylan must have pinched himself when he found these rascals.
Levon helm, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and last but definitely not least Rick Danko aka the most underrated band ever. Honestly it's absolutely incredible listening to how well they meshed as a band. Also this is my favourite live performance of all time!
Love Rick Danko, have love The Band since I first heard this song back in the late sixties when I was living in New York City, but Rick is special as is Robbie, not to take away from the other band members.
You got that right they were AWSOME! Eric Clapton said once talking about his band Cream, we thought we were the bees knees of rock, but when I heard the Band playing live I wanted to quit Cream and join the Band, but the band didn't even let Clapton join... daaammnnn!
I heard this song for the first time in my life three days ago and I´ve listen to every version of it I can find. This is the absolute best version out there, the tempo and the ending is really cool.
I wouldn’t say it’s dying, but there is a dearth of songwriters in the genre. Everyone seemingly wants to shred, but few musicians can assemble a tight, proper song.
The carnal glint in Levon's delivery, Robbie's breath-bating fills, the surge of voices into the chorus...the smiles at the end that say: we nailed it!
I remember I used to play this song for my son all the time in Minnesota. My son was a toddler back then. He loved it. I loved the song too. We played the song over and over without knowing who were the singers. We just enjoyed the song. Later on, I did some research on the song and found out that the band was called the Band and the lead singer was Levon Helm. I found out that Levon was an American and Robert Robertson, the lead guitarist was Canadian. I fall in love with the Band, especially this song. I still listen to it now. You need to listen to a story told by Robert Robertson about Bob Dylan and how they toured together. It is a wonderful story.
I was supposed to go to this concert but came down with mono. My friends went, Thanksgiving 1976. I was a junior in HS in NYC. We were all going to say we were sleeping over each other's houses, get on a flight to SF, see the show, go right back to the airport and come home. I would have been grounded until I was 40 (deservedly) and it would have been completely worth it. I've since seen every member of the Band live except for Richard Manuel. Levon was a lovely man, kindness personified. RIP Levon, Rick, Richard.
This concert film was released back in 1978 but it is such good quality it seems like HD quality. The filmmakers deserve respect and kudos. It was filmed in from a 1976 concert and the quality is ad good any thing produced today in 2022. Ahead of its time indeed.
RIP Robbie Robertson. 💔 I cried when Levon Helm died. 😭Helm was one of a kind. 💔💔💔💔 The Band was amazing in The Last Waltz. Only Garth Hudson alive now. With the deaths of Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, Levon Helm in 2012, and Robbie Robertson in 2023, Hudson is the last living original member of The Band. He just turned 86. Wow. Fricken time FLIES!!
Levon Helm Legend ( R.I.P ) I've watched or listened to this concert so many times........ it doesn't even need to be on a I can still go through the whole thing in my head ! A couple hits besides the obvious.... Helpless ( The Band w/ Neil Young & Joni Mitchell sounding like an angel back lit backstage... WOW 😇🎙 ) Dry Your Eyes ( Neil Diamond & The Band - starts slow & picks up tempo ) " I'm only gonna play one song for you, but I'm gonna play it GOOD" 😎🎙 The whole concert is amazing & for me I lose track of time & it doesn't even feel like a hour has gone.......... never mind 3+ ✌😎
I'm listening to this, one of the songs I heard many times in my youth, while walking to a convenience store near my house in Tacoma, on August 9, 2023, the day the writer of the song is reported to have passed away. Well, he was 80, so it's not unusual, but still it does occasion some grief, some acknowledgement of the inexorable passing of time. Come to think of it, August 9 was the same day Jerry passed away, never again to produce divine music, 28 years ago.
Not sure if it was Scorsese himself who was filming this but the way the camera fades from Rick Danko to Robbie Robertsons around 2:05 is so brilliant.
The Last Waltz was directed by Martin Scorsese so ALL the cameras are directed by him. Martin Scorsese also did The Rolling Stones. He uses their music in a lot of his movies too.
Funny how often I find myself watching this song from TLW. I don't know what it is, but seeing Levon yodel like that at the end moves me and makes me grin every time. Great song, great band, miss them all together!
The Band - Up On Cripple Creek - Live 1976 (From The Last Waltz) "Up on Cripple Creek" is the fifth song on The Band's eponymous second album, The Band. It was released as an (edited) single on Capitol 2635 in November 1969 and reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Up on Cripple Creek" was written by Band guitarist Robbie Robertson, with drummer Levon Helm singing lead vocal. A 1976 live performance of "Up on Cripple Creek" appears in the Band's concert film The Last Waltz, as well as on the accompanying soundtrack album. In addition, live performances of the song appear on Before the Flood, which records the Band's 1974 tour with Bob Dylan, as well as on the 2001 expanded edition of Rock of Ages, originally released in 1972. "Up on Cripple Creek" is notable as it is one of the first instances of a Hohner clavinet being played with a wah-wah pedal. The riff can be heard after each chorus of the song. The clavinet, especially in tandem with a wah-wah pedal, was a sound that became famous in the early to mid-1970s, especially in funk music.
Had Bob not gone electric, we'd have never heard of these guys, even after all of their excellence since Ronnie Hawkins in the late 1950s. No wonder Robertson quit after 2 decades of touring. They sure did go out with style though. The best live show ever.
Remembering the late, great legend Levon Helm on this day when he left the Earth in 2012. RIP.
I was fortunate to see them 13 times in their short existence including the Last Waltz always wanted to go to Levons barn but kids come life got in the way never made it.
One of the great musicians in rock. God lent him to us for way too short of a time.
@@hotajax None Better !!
How sad that as of today, 3 June 2021, three of five have left us: Mr. Manuel, Mr. Danko, and Mr. Helm.
Left earth already back. Takes about just a few minutes. Body lost. Being still here.
The Last Waltz, one of the best concerts of all time.
I watched the movie in a cinema two times a day for 7 days in 1979..
You’re damn right it is
I would say it was the most perfect live performance of all time ever captured on film, and the dance by Fleetwood Mac a close second...
@@deborahhatcher186 I agree!
It's flat out insane to see that many people firing on all cylinders through a whole set.
Goosebumps every time. Levon's voice while masterfully commanding those drums is absolutely mesmerizing. Forever missed along with Rick and Richard

Rick Sjoquist that part is absolutely epic and I replay over and over again. What a performance!
Levon's voice definitely got better with age.
been practicijng exactly that and nailed it now.
Secret is being completely reelaxed and taking breath into account.
sit up straight, or sstanbd up straight.. no slouching as it decapacitates proper needed breathing
I love that! And it looks like Robbie got a chuckle out of it as well :)

@@deborahhatcher186 That's because Clapton wanted to jam, and they said, "We don't jam"

According to legend, when they moved to Big Pink, it was the locals that said " There goes the Band"
Levon sang with such great enthusiasm this concert on all of his songs, this and the night they drive old Dixie down are my favorites
Something about this song, cheers me up every time I am feeling sad.
Masterpiece of world music, a true work of art!!
