They’re all good..,then there’s Bonnie..,
amen! and Emmy Lou
They are greatness. She is the goddess
When bonnie Raitt squares up on the microphone like that hold on to your seat!
Ms. Bonnie still sounds like she did back in the day. Such a strong voice
I am just in love with Brittany Howard's voice. Everyone sounds perfect. And Bonnie oh Bonnie...
Is there anybody cooler than Bonnie on stage with a group of greats? Always grins and waits her turn, then KILLS it! Love her!
Dig😎
Right on! I think she owes me one-third child support, if you know what i mean.
@@NilsFerry 😂
Remember the no nukes concert ? She's awesome
To think she learned that slide from Lowell George.
Bonnie voice makes this song
The most quintessential Americana song written by and performed originally by a Canadian band ( except Levon ), love this lineup, love Levon R.I.P.
I'd say The night they drove old dixie down is quite high on that list to.
WOW! And the look on John Hiatt's face while watching Brittany Howard sing is awesome. She did great with all those veterans up on stage
I noticed this - for sure young gurl gots some pipe! Yeah man love to hear more from her
Her band is called Alabama Shakes. Good stuff!
I concur
you just named the 2 singers I was gonna ask to have ID'd so thanks and
amen re: Brittany Howard, such perfectly shaped phrasing for the verse she sang
this is a helluva lineup for a great song ... & wouldn't want anything less than that for Levon & his other gone mates
@@dananthony7529 Oh, That's who that is! She's good (Brittany Howard).
Bonnie Raitt gives a volume to this life so rare in its soul...notes expressed like none other than angels in sincerity and heart.
That’s the truth , been listening since I was 14 years old , now I am that old woman ,in angel from Montgomery , bless her for all she has given us !
indeed Bonnie
So true
Very true. Too bad she butchered the lyrics.

Bonnie pointing 👉 up
Levon smiling down from Heaven ...
The Reverence in this version was beyond the beyonds.
Greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇺🇦 🇮🇪 Groovy man...Groovy....
And a RIP shout-out to the other singer who made this song great, Rick Danko. And of course to one of the best songwriters to come along - Robbie Robertson.
So sad to realize we won't be seeing another one like Levon on this planet.
Respect for all in this performance. Especially Brittney and Bonnie
Love how Bonnie and Emmy Lou give each other a hug as the music starts.
What an honor to be a part of that ensemble.
Bonnie is stunning and that voice of hers gives me chills !
Bonnie Rait is UNDERRATED ! !
What a talent
No, she isn't. Underrated is overused 😊
@@KSpirit54Exactly! She’s a legend.
@@KSpirit54I don’t think people even know what the term even means anymore!
Booker T!
GOAT
what a performance!💖💖💖💖
Bonnie Raitt is simply incomparable.
You are correct. I also love Susan Tedeschi. Their voices are the some of the finest and both can represent on the guitar.
Love Bonnie Raitt!
It's just incredible . the effort of the others , and then Bonnie just does her thing , totally natural.....
I have a Stratocaster. I have a slide. Now tell me how I can get that TONE.
Love Bonnie since I was 16 years old !
I love most of the people on this stage. Many of them I am personally close with. The musicality is palpable. But, without doubt, Miss Bonnie is the one that literally brings tears to my eyes every time I hear her. I love you, B.
OK, you might know who that incredible piano player is, making the whole song, but no mention that I can find anywhere. I hate it when that happens with "celebs" that get all the attention and they leave folks like that out.
I've heard all my life of how beautiful Emmylou Harris is. She truly is, and has class too. My thanks to all of them for this fine gathering that they did! Bonnie Raitt too! She's so good.
Every bit as beautiful with silver hair as she looked 40 years ago.
But where was Robbie Robertson, he wrote the songs Levon sang.
Robbie says he wrote all the songd. He had a falling out with the other members. Those guys thought Robbie stole form them
My husband and I took our oldest son to see Nitty Gritty Dirt Band October 2012, they played this at the end combined with Will The Circle Be Unbroken, we were in the third row, center, everyone was on their feet singing along and tears rolled down our cheeks, Tristan included, he loves Levon, of course!!❤❤❤❤ This is a wonderful tribute, love everyone on that stage and yes, recognized Brittany immediately as well as everyone else of course!! Bravo 👏
My name is AnnaLeigh, after this song. This means so much to me. Thank you, Levon.
Yep, I agree David P...have to admit I was just waiting for Bonnie to sing...nice tribute to Levon!
wow not seen this before. Fantastic that Richard thompson is recognised in this company. So under-rated here in the UK. And, when i first heard Brittany Howard, I thought how great she would sound on this song. During her solo you can see the warmth and admiration in the eyes of the older guys in the band. To have been part of that song's creation 50 years ago and hear it being delivered again like that must bring a new level of enjoyment and meaning.
God, I love her, her playing, her voice, her everything, nobody ever like her
Bonnie the Godmother none better love from Scotland you always lift my soul 👍🏴
Probably one of the greatest pieces of music ever written
Robbie most certainly delivered on this jewel. He really did define the Band like no other.
John
I think you have nailed it. A superb piece of music. Defined The Band from the start.
Brittany and Bonnie I could listen to them all day long. I had the pleasure of seeing them live. OMG
I love this. I can only imagine how Britany feels being up there with all of them❤
Love her so much!!!
Lost my mom to cancer in March of 2012…Levon died from cancer a month later. A week or so after that, we were at a Light The Night cancer walk and benefit in New Smyrna Beach Florida. They had a large board up at the stage and encouraged people to write loved ones names who we lost in the last year since the last walk. I of course put my moms name, but had to put Levon’s name too. Such a great influence on my musical journey over the years…
They saved the best for last -- the one and only Bonnie Raitt! 👌👋🙏
Oh WOW, Bonnie Raitt! What a woman! 💚
I could listen to Bonnie sing sunrise to sunset. Her voice.....
Me too !
I am Immersed in the sea of dazzling time and washed by the waves of soothing time .
Brilliant .People will be listening and watching 20,000 years from now. On a DVD that is one inch wide.
Ms Raitt owned it from 5:04 to 5:31 ... Wow!
what an awesome tribute to Levon. That was one hell of a performance!!
Emmylou dont age...just gets better❤
Wow, there are some of my heroes on that stage! Sam Bush, Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, Booker T, Emmylou, Richard Thompson, Levon, et al. Fantastic!
Brittany Howard hit this like one of those unlikely contestants who come on those talent contest shows and blows everybody away. This was 2012 She was not well known yet. This is a moment that put the spotlight on her.
The look on John Hiatt’s face while she was singing says it all.
Hiatt's look is simultaneously one of total respect, and knowing that the baton has been safely passed to the next generation.
Yes, your assessment is valid, but I wouldn't want her to sit on me.
@@guyrabinowitz don't worry Joe, I think it highly unlikely she'd even want your company.
She KILLED it. Comma, period. End of sentence.
Bonnie, forever the Queen❣️
I bet you Levon was up in heaven tapping his toes to this.
Whenever Bonnie Raitt takes the stage, she outshines everyone.
Amazing how that stage didn't buckle under the weight of the talent standing on it. Vale Levon we all miss you
Anything with Bonnie signing and playing guitar is magic!
I'm 75 and I can't count the number of times I've listened to this version.
Bonnie is the best. The Band will live forever.. miss you Levon.
John Hiatt singing The Weight just awesome!!!!
Bonnie raitt. I have no words. Awesome
I adore Emmylou Harris.
What a Line -up!!!! 🇺🇸Americana at its finest. RIP Levon’ Heaven Rejoice one of greatest Songwriter/Musicians of all Time! This song has become an American Anthem
You realize the song was written by a Canadian? He also wrote The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Four of the five members of The Band were Canadian. Don't tell a Canadian that this is an American song...we disagree. Next you'll probably tell us Leonard Cohen was an American.
Jeff Delaney Yeah was talking bout this song in particular being somewhat of a folk rock anthem. Well aware of the Musicians from up north. Been a Band’ fan since 60s. Robbie Robertson’ is Mixed blood Iroquois/Mohawk’ Indian- from six nations reserve Ontario! -My G Grandmother was 1/2 Iroquois from the same Reserve in Ontario’. The Iroquois homeland was originally Upper New York State region. Robertson no doubt felt the connection with both America & Canadian roots as his songwriting reflects it -and of course Levon’s southern roots
@@ACOUSTIC_4LOVE Yes, but he is also half Jewish and raised in the streets of Toronto. Levon spent alot of time in Toronto. In the 80's he was still playing bars on Yonge Street. I appreciate your response.
Jeff Delaney -it’s all a blend as far as I see it. Music has no boundaries. People have been touched by music as far back as time stretches. Ancient Irish folk music made its way to shores of Nova Scotia and New England. African rhythms made its way round the globe and blended with Appalachia etc. I love the stuff that came from up north-from Hank Snow’ the singing Ranger’ to Ian Tyson’ and Lightfoot’ to the Guess who’ and. Lenny Breau’. The Band’ is one of the my favorites. Stay safe up there my friend
You too!
It's times like this I wish You Tube had a LOVE button!! Like is NOT strong enough!!
This just shows how great Levon was. A bunch of great musicians and this can't hold a candle to the original.
Very few tributes do, Thomas. The point of a tribute--especially a live one with lots of musicians-- is not to do it better than the original artist, but to pay homage. No cover or tribute can top the original, but it's the feeling rather than pure note for note vocal imitation that makes a tribute work, and this one too. Bruce Springsteen does one, too, and he can't manage all the notes that Levon sang, and doesn't even try, but it's his regard for Levon that's clear and present. Try to enjoy it for what it is, not comparing to the master Levon.
@@liandrosmoots4931 But I didn't enjoy it. I made an observation. I stand by it. I've heard tributes and covers that I thought were better than the original. I don't know if it can be done here. Again, not because they are bad musicians, but because Levon was so good.
OK, yes, I was too fast in noting that that no covers or tributes are better than the original. You're right, some are, for sure. I do appreciate this group's effort in the tribute, and can't deny that the original was so much better; just was enjoyable for me to see so many great musicians give it a try, and even if you didn't enjoy this one, I can agree that Levon Helm was just wonderful. @@thomasflynn5366
That blueburst strat makes me weak in the knees. Blessed to own one:)
I really appreciate the inclusion of Brittney Howard.... whom I think is one of the few who will carry on that which Levon and so many others on that stage reflect, a dedication to the music that transcends ego and vanity and is just about the pure magic of the music!
They all sing and play the hell out of this song. One of the best all-star performances of this song. The Weight is timeless anyway.
I was 13 the first time I heard The Weight on the radio- it was by Jackie DeShannon, who did a good version. I had no clue about the lyrics...over many years, friends and me discussed- what could they be talking about. Now I'm 67- and have read so much about what Robbie Robertson MIGHT have meant. I guess it's like my Dad used to say- " no good deed goes unpunished."
It is timeless...still goin stromg!
The entire show is awesome. Bonnie Raitt, is above them all
brings back old times
Brittany Howard's voice shook me. Wow!!
Bonnie and Emmylou were good, as expected, but
Brittany was amazing!!
Alabama Shakes Baby!!!
@@elixermixer Hell yeah!
Sandy Shoenberger, And did you notice how John Hiatt smiled?
Bonnie Raitt is brilliant.
So many of the artists I grew up with are gone, I miss them. RIP Levon.
The first guy, Jim Lauderdale, is one of the nicest and most genuine guys I have ever met. Humble and true to the art form. Also met Booker T. Jones after one of his shows...another guy who is soft spoken and kind. I betcha most everyone on this stage is that way. Probably the authenticity of the music that makes the character of musicians authentic and approachable.
Don't think it gets much better than this. How did they manage to get all these great musicians together in the same place at the same time?
Written by Robbie (Jaime) Robertson, lead guitar of The Band. When Robbie joined the Ronnie and the Hawks (precursor to The Band) , he looked up to Levon the most. Read "Testimony", wonderful autobiography of Robbie R. for more. You'll love it.
Americana is my favourite american music genre. Greetings from Portugal.
seen this so many times, still unable to keep dry eyes
PURE GOOSEBUMP CITY! Especially that intro by Amy Helm, Teresa Williams and Larry Campbell. And Bonnie, oh Bonnie! She flips every line like she don't care but wrings out soul for days. And that's before we get to the gee-tar and that mean, mean slide of hers. Think "The Gangster" is in love - but don't tell the boys! G.C.
Rarely does one see as much talent on one stage. Amy Helm, who proves the adage the fruit don't fall far from the tree. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, who with Amy were a huge part of Levon's musical celebration of life in his later years. Bonnie Raitt.... well, enough said. Sir Richard Thompson, said by many to be the finest living guitarist. Emmylou Harris with her former guitarist and uber producer Buddy Miller. Buddy's partner in crime Jim Lauderdale. The unique voice of John Hiatt. Bassist and another uber producer Don Was. Shining light Sam Bush. Booker T. Jones, and fellow M.G.'s drummer Al Jackson and bassist Lewis Steinberg, the legends. And Brittany Howard, who along with Amy, are keeping the torch lit for the future. God bless you Levon, and all that you have mightily influenced.
another incredible musician and songwriter on that stage Darrell Scott.
@@andrewz4537 Indeed.
Bonnie obviously comes and shows them all
Levon was a good human being! He was happiest when playing & singing with groups of people. He had as much love for folks as he did talent.
This was already remarkable and then Bonnie Raitt dropped her hands from her guitar and belted out "...who set me here ...." My soul almost left my body!
Bonnie Raitt.....love everything she does
How One person can touch so many lives in this 🌎 that is a full and happy life lived.
I was very lucky to have seen Bonnie Raitt back in the 80's-90's she still sounds the same,AWSOME,as does everyone else great video!
Most of the tributes for this song go to Levon as it should, but Brittany Howard sure did Cover verse 4 just like Rick Danko did it! Thanks Brittany!!!
She did, but ole Danko was throwing nba elbows when he played
She performed the hell out of it.
@@MrAllegiant1 I thought I got animated but no. Bass players. They perform the hell out of things.
I have watched this so many times, and I still think it is one of the best performances I have ever seen. Each artist brings a unique flavour to their part, but Bonnie Raitt has a voice that just soars above the rest.
And that slide🥰
I know,she is brilliant.
When I watched this video the first time I knew them all except Brittany Howard and thought she was great too. Great discovering her and her band Alabama Shakes
Bonnie addict since 1971, when she played in my college (Grinnell) dorm lounge behind her first album. Gifted, from incredible family talent (her dad John Raitt was heartbreakingly handsome and gifted with a beautiful voice. You go,, Bonnie.
Levon Helm, this your song, this is for you with love from Spain.
As the song progressed, anticipated Bonnie taking a verse. So much talent on that stage. Think I'll seek out the Playing For Change version again.
Ja, PFC's version is a masterpiece. Keep in mind, though, it took two years to record and edit.
Just wow ! And amazing from all especially Bonnie Raitt and Brittany
These performers sure did pay respects to this iconic song.
No they didn't. They bastardized it.
It’s nice to see real musicians playing REAL MUSIC!!! Wow
No matter how many big stars are on a stage, whenever Bonnie Raitt is there she outshines all of them.
for sure, and you can see the respect on their faces when she steps up to the mic....
She does. Croz said the same. Always the best. Love from England.🏴
Clearly!
I’m here for Bonnie.
No. Not even close vocally. She was shrill. Brittany Howard smoked them all. Emmylou Harris easily much better vocalist, and John Hiatt too.
Bonnie and Emmy were my 2 crushes growing up.
I am still grieving our levon.
I will love this man til my last breathe
Bonnie OWNS this version!
Wow I've never heard Brittany Howard sing before I did not expect such an amazingly powerful voice
The girl next to Emmy Lou is unbelievable so young yet so powerful & not out of place on a stage of legends
her name is Brittany Howard
Yup, she's the one who John Hiatt is looking at with such admiration.
And her name appeared on screen if you had taken the time, and extended the respect, to read it.
Emmylou Harris is a gift from the angels above.
this is what the American music awards STILL SHOULD BE
Music knows no race, no borders and restricts no one and for ages past and for the ages to come will continually say “ALL ARE WELCOME”
Gotta love Buddy Miller and Richard Thompson as "back-up musicians!" Sweet Jesus, what a band!
And, Don Was ("Mr. Everywhere Cool ") on Bass !
Don't overlook the incredible Darrell Scott on guitar and chorus harmony!!
@@andrewz4537 Would've liked to hear more of Darrell on the mike and a gentle slide duel between Bonnie and Richard would've served up some kind of nirvana!
Help!!! Who played that magnificent piano part???? Never saw him. Incredible, the very essence of the song uncredited.
preach BONNIE, YOU SEXY BEAST OF A GUITAR PLAYER...YOU ARE OUR VOICE TOO...WE LOVE OUR VOICES BEST OF ALL.
AMERICA STILL HAS TALENT.
Amazing men..!!!!
Farming during the day and writing masterpieces at night......
We miss you Sir.
The wonderful singer/composer/guitarist extraordinaire, Richard Thompson, content to simply pay respects and 'wick his lamp down low' for the opportunity to pay respects and play just a little in Levon's honour.
Brian David Stoliker plus, he was the only "Brit" on that stage.
Quite probably the best guitarist on the stage but content to "be there", love you RT.
@@martinhardy5462 He may be the best but another backup incredible guitarist there is Darrell Scott.
I love Bonnie Raitt's soulful voice
Brittany Howard KILLED THAT! Had no idea who she was but what an amazing performance and a perfect song for her to sing
Levon Helm... I loved that man since I was 15 and I've seen him in the last waltz... Never heard of him... But this song.. Even I couldn't understand a single world of English... Made me cry intensely..... And then following history of the band and the ungratefulness of robbie robertson....
Today I have the double CD of last waltz in the car to listen to when I'm in Melancholic mood...
The night they drove the Dixie down and the weight....
At 59 I still get chills and goose bumps.... And I'm Italian in Italy....
Mauro.... I went to Woodstock (yes the festival) and heard The Band live there. I fell in love with Levon Helm and this song in particular. I'll never forget that set. The music was amazing........ I still sing this song and find a lot of comfort in it... I don;t know why, it's just a magical song........
I miss Levon Helm a lot.
@@SarahJamesJazz I wish you could tell me of hendrix...
And there in the background is Richard Thompson, arguably the best guitarist to walk the earth.
Brian Carroll this was an incredible performance . that being said I would have loved to see Richard and buddy miller get a bit more of that action .
My comment wasn’t a critique of the performance, more an attempt to enlighten people as to the quality of the backing musicians.
