    I just made some steel cut oat meal, sweetened with agave nectar, dried blueberries and some cinnamon. I've never been a huge fan of oatmeal (was raised on instant) but the robust texture of steel cut has made me a fan!

    Freshly made applesauce is great too.

    It still tastes like oatmeal, but steel cut oats has a somewhat nuttier taste and the texture is denser; more filling too! I switched over to steel cut oats a while back and really prefer this form to the others.

    A serving size cooked would likely be about one cup for most people. You can add the bran, cinnamon and other things when you are cooking and it would be no problem. I prefer to leave it plain and add those things when I heat up a portion the next day. That way I can change what I am adding each time I use a portion.

    Nicely present, Gretchen. Thank you for the information. I've been eating steel cut oats for a while now and find the texture is what makes steel cut oats so much better than rolled and instant.

    Well, if you are planning to eat the oatmeal right away, you will definitely need to cook for a full 15-20 minutes. The method I show here is an overnight method. Once the oatmeal comes to a boil and it's removed from the heat, the hot oats continue to absorb all of the liquid as it cools down and is stored in the refrigerator overnight. So if you just bring it to a boil and wait 15 minutes it won't be done.

      Yeah because the fridged lower temp will lower the porridge boiling point and keep cooking for that lil bit extra.

    Great tips. I made my first batch of steel cut oatmeal and I love it. The texture is so much better than the instant ones. My instructions say to boil the salted water first and then add the oats and cook over medium low temperature for about 30 minutes uncovered. I think I’ll try your way and see if it works for me. Thanks again for the great video.

    Is it okay to eat the same oatmeal that's prepared once throughout the week. Won't it be unhealthy?

  • @christopherfairs9095
    @christopherfairs9095 4 роки тому

    Or just add boiling water to the steel cut oats, put in the microwave on 20% power setting and cook for 20 minutes. No need to stir, doesn't burn or boil vigorously and thickens perfectly.

    Thank you Gretchen. You mentioned that steel cut oats are the least processed of all oat types, but aren't oatmeal groats the least processed? Are there any significant nutritional differences between steel cut and groats? Thanks.

    • @bensosnowski1128
      @bensosnowski1128 2 роки тому

      Groats are good in porridges and stews, not for a bowl of oatmeal in the morning.
      They often require soaking, and may still be chewy when prepared. Making it not ideal to eat them by itself.
      However, you are correct that they are nutritious and minimally processed

    • @bensosnowski1128
      @bensosnowski1128 2 роки тому

      To clarify, steal cut oats are groats cut up finely. Roughly equivalent nutrition value

    What is the texture of the steel cut oatmeal when it's done? Is it still a little bit chewy?

    • @NutritionXpert
      @NutritionXpert  10 років тому +2

      Yes! Steel cut oats tend to be a little more chewy than the more processed versions. That's what I like about it!

    1/2c ROLLED OATS in MAGIC BULLET for 30 to 45 seconds. Add 1c water, microwave 2-minutes. Comes out lumpy but just stir in some butter, salt, and pancake syrup or honey while still hot. Now you have a 5-minute recipe :)

    All fine and well. Yet I use the package. As I have a limited amount of fuel. And time. (Solar house, and propane.) Will share with you a thing I found. that is a real power house. Mixing a very small tin of deviled ham in at the last. Makes a strong load of protein/ fiber. That sticks with me. All morning. Learned that in the armed forces. Thank you for good show.

    A 6 minute video explaining a 3 step instructional process and not even made correctly. Bring the water to a boil first, then add the oatmeal on high for 5 minutes while stirring , then let simmer on low for 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of salt to the water before you put in on the heat also. Add strawberry slices and honey during the simmer period for flavor that is absorbed into the oatmeal.

      In 20 minutes I could make an omelet with meat, cheese, and vegetables, as well as a bagel or a muffin.
      Why on earth would I waste nearly 20 minutes on a simple little cup of oatmeal that won’t even sustain me for 2 hours?
      Not to mention the amount of time it’s going to take to clean the pot you cooked oatmeal in.
      I could buy the instant oatmeal and microwave it in one to three minutes for the exact same end product.

      She was not careful with her words, but she did show us exactly what she meant. What she showed us, was that you bring it to a boil, turn the stove off, cover it, and let it cool down. The oats will continue to cook, and absorb the water, while off-heat. After cooled, put it in the refrigerator. Heat up one portion the next day, and through the week, to eat. Hope this helps.
