I just made some steel cut oat meal, sweetened with agave nectar, dried blueberries and some cinnamon. I've never been a huge fan of oatmeal (was raised on instant) but the robust texture of steel cut has made me a fan!
Freshly made applesauce is great too.
It still tastes like oatmeal, but steel cut oats has a somewhat nuttier taste and the texture is denser; more filling too! I switched over to steel cut oats a while back and really prefer this form to the others.
Much more food value too..
Thank you!!!! This video deserves waaaaay more likes.
I love this video
A serving size cooked would likely be about one cup for most people. You can add the bran, cinnamon and other things when you are cooking and it would be no problem. I prefer to leave it plain and add those things when I heat up a portion the next day. That way I can change what I am adding each time I use a portion.
Nicely present, Gretchen. Thank you for the information. I've been eating steel cut oats for a while now and find the texture is what makes steel cut oats so much better than rolled and instant.
Hey Gracias!.. I´m writing from Costa Rica.
Todos sus consejos son muy saludables! Gracias otra vez!!

Well, if you are planning to eat the oatmeal right away, you will definitely need to cook for a full 15-20 minutes. The method I show here is an overnight method. Once the oatmeal comes to a boil and it's removed from the heat, the hot oats continue to absorb all of the liquid as it cools down and is stored in the refrigerator overnight. So if you just bring it to a boil and wait 15 minutes it won't be done.
Yeah because the fridged lower temp will lower the porridge boiling point and keep cooking for that lil bit extra.
thanks for this video. i am VERY new to cooking and i appreciate you making this to show me how to cook this
Frozen blueberries and raspberries are awesome in porridge
Thanks for the tips Gretchen!
Great tips. I made my first batch of steel cut oatmeal and I love it. The texture is so much better than the instant ones. My instructions say to boil the salted water first and then add the oats and cook over medium low temperature for about 30 minutes uncovered. I think I’ll try your way and see if it works for me. Thanks again for the great video.
Thanks for your excellent presentation. I am a fan.
Is it okay to eat the same oatmeal that's prepared once throughout the week. Won't it be unhealthy?
Or just add boiling water to the steel cut oats, put in the microwave on 20% power setting and cook for 20 minutes. No need to stir, doesn't burn or boil vigorously and thickens perfectly.
Thank you Gretchen. You mentioned that steel cut oats are the least processed of all oat types, but aren't oatmeal groats the least processed? Are there any significant nutritional differences between steel cut and groats? Thanks.
Groats are good in porridges and stews, not for a bowl of oatmeal in the morning.
They often require soaking, and may still be chewy when prepared. Making it not ideal to eat them by itself.
However, you are correct that they are nutritious and minimally processed
To clarify, steal cut oats are groats cut up finely. Roughly equivalent nutrition value
thx gretchen
Very useful video. Thanks!
Good advised
How long should the steelcut oats be boiled before the pot is covered to absorb the water? Thanks.
Thank u this helps
Hello from Alaska. Great video. I was doing it all wrong.
Does microwaving alter any of the nutritional properties of the oats? Thanks for your post.
Yes it does! I stopped using microwaves for over a year now I use a toaster over!
great video, thank you
nice tip
What is the texture of the steel cut oatmeal when it's done? Is it still a little bit chewy?
Yes! Steel cut oats tend to be a little more chewy than the more processed versions. That's what I like about it!
You're a great nanny, thanks for making this vid.
1/2c ROLLED OATS in MAGIC BULLET for 30 to 45 seconds. Add 1c water, microwave 2-minutes. Comes out lumpy but just stir in some butter, salt, and pancake syrup or honey while still hot. Now you have a 5-minute recipe :)
Thxxx
Once it comes to a boil, put the lid on and take it off the fire and wait 15 mins. that's it? I thought steel cut oats took a lot longer. hmmm
How long does it keep in the fridge?
Thanks for the video, I thought oats were oats.
All fine and well. Yet I use the package. As I have a limited amount of fuel. And time. (Solar house, and propane.) Will share with you a thing I found. that is a real power house. Mixing a very small tin of deviled ham in at the last. Makes a strong load of protein/ fiber. That sticks with me. All morning. Learned that in the armed forces. Thank you for good show.
In a micro wave ?
Friend 🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋
Hey Dummy,,,, when you put the top on did you remove it from heat???? Omg
Ramoo67 (I pray you get better)
Range top lol
A 6 minute video explaining a 3 step instructional process and not even made correctly. Bring the water to a boil first, then add the oatmeal on high for 5 minutes while stirring , then let simmer on low for 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of salt to the water before you put in on the heat also. Add strawberry slices and honey during the simmer period for flavor that is absorbed into the oatmeal.
i cooked it exactly the way you described and it came out all runny and still not fully cooked

Dan McCourt it will thicken over time.
And a huge comment which only actually takes 3 lines lol
Enjoy your ego baseballhunter.
Hope it tastes of jockstrap.
It takes too long in the AM, and they don't have time(you don't have an extra 13 minutes to get up and cook CORRECT oats?) get off your ass America and take the time to make real steel cut oats!
That's why Americans have to be on statans meds but have time to take them I'm a whole groat guy
In 20 minutes I could make an omelet with meat, cheese, and vegetables, as well as a bagel or a muffin.
Why on earth would I waste nearly 20 minutes on a simple little cup of oatmeal that won’t even sustain me for 2 hours?
Not to mention the amount of time it’s going to take to clean the pot you cooked oatmeal in.
I could buy the instant oatmeal and microwave it in one to three minutes for the exact same end product.
Bring a pot of liquid to a boil and putting a lid on it is a good way to end up with a mess.
Was this video made in 1437 BC, LOL
This is cooking steel cut oats not making steel cut oats
,
put uncooked steel cut oats in a bowl....add fruit & skim milk....eat & enjoy. Clean up? one bowl & one spoon
Are you sure steel cut oats and not rolled oats your break your teeth on raw steel cut oats
Followed your recipie exactly as you said and the pot boiled over and made a huge mess.
She was not careful with her words, but she did show us exactly what she meant. What she showed us, was that you bring it to a boil, turn the stove off, cover it, and let it cool down. The oats will continue to cook, and absorb the water, while off-heat. After cooled, put it in the refrigerator. Heat up one portion the next day, and through the week, to eat. Hope this helps.
I like soup momma.
I turn my nose up to rolled oats bit of a oat snob 😁
