- Learn how to cook steel-cut oats three different ways; on the stove-top, in the slow-cooker oats and overnight. Steel-cut oats are the whole oat groat cut into smaller pieces with a steel mill, so they are super nutritious and absolutely delicious.
The first question most people have about steel cut oats is is how are they different from rolled oats? Rolled Oats are simply the entire oat groat (before they are cut into pieces to make steel-cut oats), steamed, rolled, re-steamed, and toasted. Basically, they have been through a bit more processing, so they tend to lose a little of their nutritional value and some of the hearty, chewy texture.

STOVETOP METHOD
1 cup steel-cut oats
2 cups water
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
In a medium saucepan, bring water and milk to a boil. Add oats and stir. Watch them closely for the first couple of minutes because sometimes they like to bubble up and over.
Cover and simmer 20-30 minutes over low heat until oats reach the consistency you like (20 minutes for chewy, al dente oats, 30 minutes for more creamy).
Scoop into bowls and serve with your favorite toppings.
OVERNIGHT METHOD
1 cup steel-cut oats
4 cups water
In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add oats and stir.
Cover and turn off the heat. Let sit overnight.
In the morning add a splash of water (or milk) to loosen the oats and heat over medium-low heat until warmed through.
Scoop into bowls and serve with your favorite toppings.
SLOW COOKER METHOD
butter, coconut oil or cooking spray
1 cup steel-cut oats
2 cups water
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
pinch of salt *optional
cinnamon stick *optional
Coat the slow cooker with butter, coconut oil or cooking to spray to prevent the oats from sticking.
Add oats, water milk, salt and cinnamon to your slow cooker and stir.
Cover and cook on low setting 4-6hours, or on high for 2-3 hours.
Scoop into bowls and serve with your favorite toppings.
I like using the unsweetened almond milk because it adds a subtle sweetness and creamy texture but, if you prefer, you can use all water for each technique and still have super creamy, delicious oats.

How long do they keep fresh for after cooked and put into containers
rolled oats cook faster for sure. once youve had steel cut, rolled is like eating mush. its very hard to go back to rolled oats after eating steel cut.

I make my steel cut oats on the stove with a can of full coconut milk. I add in one banana while it is cooking and also chia seeds and flax meal and cinnamon. It turns out so creamy with lots of flavor.

My mom just came down with diverticulitis. It's mild, but painful. We're putting her on a liquid diet and then a high fiber diet once her pain goes away because she can't tolerate the antibiotic regimen.

Hi, I make mine by adding unsweetened almond milk and pinch of cinnamon, then leave it in a mason jar in the fridge over night. Take it out in the morning pop it in the microwave for 2mins, I like to stir it halfway through. I usually leave it for a couple of mins to let it cool and that's it, perfect every time 😊
I soak steel cut oats in Thermos food jar with boiling water before going to sleep every night, in the morning it’s perfectly cooked

I made it in the Instant Pot today.
1 cup steel cut oats
2 1/2 cups water
Cook f or 4 mins, then 20 mins slow release. Add any topping after cooking. Turned out perfect!

I do Steel Cut Oats in my 6 qt Instant Pot....I set them on a timer before I go to bed (Manual for 7 minutes), and they are ready in the morning! We have hot breakfast way more often that way, and less cereal. YEAH!!

I use instant pot. 5 cups water, salt and 2 cups oats. Pressure cooker 4 minutes. I do this once a week and refrigerate 3/4 cup servings for the week. I heat for 2 mins in microwave and serve with raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and walnuts!

Megan Reeves - hi - I enjoy using an Instant pot too. Just wanted to double check the water - is it really 5 quarts, or did you mean five cups of water? 5 quarts seems like a lot for just 2 cups of oats. ...

Love method #3, which I learned from an older video of yours! Before I cover and leave, I add my raisins and chia seeds. I add nuts and cinnamon in the morning. Love all your vegan-friendly content.
We microwave steel-cut oats in approx 4" diam by 4" high Corningware stoneware mug (has a side handle). For an individual serving, we add 1/3 cup steel-cut oats with almost 1 cup hot water (the same water we heat to make tea or instant coffee), a dash of salt, and I add heaping teaspoon of chopped peanuts to reduce boil-up and for flavor. My wife skips the nuts. Our microwave is 1100 watts, so time is 3.5 to 4 minutes at 60% power (power level 6). After cooking we add 12-18 frozen blueberries or mixed berries which helps to cool somewhat the hot oats. We eat with dried prunes, dates, 1/2 sliced banana, 1/2 apple, or 1/2 fresh pear, or whatever you want. A friend likes yogurt or cottage cheese with his hot oats. Often we cook old-fashioned rolled oats the same way, but with 1/3 cup oats, add 2/3 cup hot water, cooking about 120 seconds at power level 7. In a small 600 to 700 watt microwave you could cook at about full power. We use our microwave a lot to save time. Many frozen entrees include heating/cooking directions in a microwave.

To do overnight in the slow cooker use it as a “Bain Marie”. Put oats and milk and /or water in a heat proof bowl, cover it with a lid or plate. Put it in the crock pot and put a couple of inches of boiling water in the crock pot, around the bowl. Put the lid on and leave on low overnight. The oats will be ready for you in the morning.

Favorite oatmeal toppings/ingredients are unsweetened coconut flakes, ginger powder, dried mulberries, grass fed butter, walnuts, ripe banana, cinnamon powder and occasionally chopped dried fig. I eat oatmeal every night at work!

I will try the over night on stove. Looks easy. I usually put a tablespoon of walnuts switching fruit toppings of Blue berries, Raspberries, Bananas or figs.

I follow the directions you gave on a previous video for making steel but oats which is the first way you describe in this video. i think ill stick to that way because its easy. i usually top mine with walnuts and blueberries and mix stevia and cinnamon in it

I liked to add peanut butter to my oatmeal. It melts right in and adds some protein. Bananas are good also.

Love your videos Dani. Here's my experience making them in the microwave: I use a Pyrex container (without the lid). I've found that I can get the oats to really absorb the water and soften up much better and faster in the microwave. The trick is to stand by and stop and start the microwave, stirring in between, while the oats cook! I also enjoy my oats with a little Irish butter and a pinch of Himalayan sea salt. A spoon of cream if I'm in the mood. Thanks for the video!

My toppings relate to the weather or mood ... if i want something warm i add cinnamon powder & cubed apple or coconut flakes & cacao nibs, if i want something fresh i add berries
100% the same!
I make mine in the Instant Pot .... 2 cups oats (not instant) 6 cups water and 2 cinnamon sticks. High pressure for 6 minutes/natural release. They come out great.

Dani I love steel cut oats and I found quick 5 minute cooking steel cut oats at Walmart . I love them with almond milk and cook them with a chopped apple and cinnamon and nutmeg very apple pie tasting.
I like to use my Instant Pot to make steel cut oats. I make enough to last all week and divide it into individual containers for Monday - Friday and then just reheat each morning.

Thanks Dani! My favorite way to make oats, because it's the quickest (although your overnight oats are too ) is to just put boiling water over old fashioned oats (and add ons), and let it sit a minute or two. They're perfect . We call it oats +10 because we add 10 additional items (all mixed together in a big jar ahead of time ).... Add ons such as chia, hemp, flax, 3 kinds of nuts, 3 kinds of berries, cinnamon etc. No microwave or sweetners needed. Cheers 😊.

Thanks for this! I have had good luck cooking in the microwave at about 60-70% power, so just when they look like they're gonna overflow they go back down. Just have to watch the first couple of times and see how your microwave does:)

I am a massive oatmeal fan and I have it almost every morning for breakfast, I make it with a 1/2 cup of oats, 1 cup boiling water from a kettle and then put it in the microwave for 30seconds- 1minute and voila! it tastes delicious and only takes about 5 mins to make! (However I don't use steel cut oats I use rolled oats).

Hi Dani, I usually put the microwave on high and usually for 1.5min to 2 min max. Anything more than 2 min will result in the overflow. If needed, I’ll do extra 30 Sec for the 2nd time.

I used a medium Pyrex bowl, added 1/4 cup of steel cut oats, dash of salt and 1 cup water in the microwave. I set the time for 18-20 minutes at 50% power level. I kept a close eye on them. It would boil towards the top of the bowl but when the power cycled off it would go down. As it reached 17 minutes I pulled the bowl out, added frozen berries. cinnamon and some honey to sweeten. I let it finish cooking for 3 more minutes. Worked great...…..

I soak steel cut otes over night, and micro wave it for 4 minutes and then eat it with dairy milk ,coconut milk and some Marmite. It is very satisfying for diabetics.
Normally I am a Crockpot cook, but these overnight stovetop oats are FANTASTIC ! I would never have known steel cut oats could be made so easily. The least fussy topping for me would be simply take a teaspoon of natural/ unbleached cane sugar (I've bought a bag at the Dollar Tree for $1 before). Another topping I like would be maple syrup. I am not crazy about bananas, but half of a banana, sliced, would be good too. Or, maybe use the little box of raisins. Those are good. Thank you for creating and posting this.
My favorite way to eat oats is (cows)milk, pinch of salt, cinnemon and lots of apple. Yumm ^_^

Oats are my husband's favorite breakfast. He loves oats so much that sometimes he even has them for dinner as well. I like the steel cut but my husband prefers the old fashioned. I've been toying with the idea of combining the two types of oats. I would appreciate your input or any suggestions you might have. The plan is to cook the steel cut oats as usual but then add the old fashioned oats toward the end of the cooking time--so they are both done at the same time. I also plan on adding some fruit (like bananas, or dates, maybe a few diced cherries or blueberries) --I would add the dates about half way through and add the bananas and berries at the end so they wouldn't turn to mush. I would add some walnuts to my husband's bowl (cause I don't like nuts in things). What do you think, is this a good or bad one? Hi ! To prevent the excess of foam you should put a little butter or any kind of oil in your water .....you have surely noticed that you have less foam when using the crockpot method ..it is due to the fact that you grease your pot prior to cooking the oat...hope it helps for the microwaves cooking ..thank you for you recipes and tips .

I make steel cut oats overnight, every night to bring with me too work for breakfast. It works well for me, because my time is limited in the morning and I wouldn't have time to cook them for forty minutes in the morning. My favorite steel cut oats is from 365 Oats from Whole Foods because they supposedly have less glysophate.
I eat steel cut oats every morning I do use double boiler have tried instint pot crock pot but now I'm on oatbran very easy just add hot water 👍
i just bought some steel cut oats....i am not a fan of oatmeal but i think its the texture so if these are chewier maybe i will like them. I do love overnight oats...I eat cold like cereal and add whatever i have on hand....usually some pecans or walnuts...always have blueberries on hand because if i dont eat them all i freeze them so i usually grab a handful and by the time i get to work they are thawed enough to eat...plus i always mash in a banana for the sweetness...but i thought you know dried cranberries would taste good and maybe some orange marmalade idk just thinking

I cook mine in my instant pot. Only takes ten minutes! Use the delay function and wake up to hot goodness. Don't use milk to cook them on delah. Only water. Thanks for vegan meal prep video. Got my bok choy today😀
