  • This video will explain and show how to remove the lock cylinder and ignition switch from a 2002 impala. My lock cylinder had frozen and finally was able to get it free but unfortunately would no longer start the car. Ended up having to replace the lock cylinder and adjust the contacts of the switch.

I fixed it a couple weeks ago...it cost $56 for the ignition and I put it in myself. I told her to never go to a dealer again.

This video helped immensely in replacing the ignition switch in a 2002 Impala LS with console shifter.
Some tips after performing this work myself on a 2002 Impala LS with console shifter. Helps if you put the parking brake on and put the tranny in 1st gear (shift knob all the way back) as that gives maximum slack on the shift cable that goes into the switch. The rubber piece that goes around the lock cylinder in the dash panel doesn't need to come out, only the circular plastic part with the ignition switch position printing on it. If you pull off the soft rubber part under the printed switch bezel, it's easiest to put it back into the dash trim before reinstalling the dash trim, and pulling on the long nubs on the back side to get it fully seated (trying to push it in later doesn't work very well). For those that are tempted to try to get the ignition switch out without removing the metal kick panel (four 10mm bolts that require a long extension), don't bother trying. It's not possible. I looked at the space alongside the switch between the dash frame and the metal kick panel and there's no way it's going to fit through there. The Chevy recall that modified the keys making the keyring end wider and fatter makes it more difficult to get the switch out if the key is in the lock cylinder compared to an original key without the recall mod. I recommend putting the cylinder back in just after bolting the switch into the dash (before reinstalling the metal kick panel); be certain to put the passkey harness in correctly or you'll be taking it back out again. One of the challenges putting it back together can be getting the metal kick panel bolted back into place. Easier if you get the front bolts started and then put the back ones in while there's still a gap between the kick panel and dash framework, and then gradually tighten them as you would with lug nuts and head bolts, rotating around to each one. Some of the metal clips on the plastic trim pieces may pull off the trim pieces and stay in the dash framework. I pulled them out and put them back onto the trim pieces. Makes it easier to put them back in. The missing ones are easy to spot and they'll still be in the dash frame. Gentle tugging with a pair of pliers gets them out.

When I was younger my parents had an 04 impala and we'd sometime have an issue when it wouldn't let em start the car and displayed a security light on the gauges, it just stayed on for around 5 minutes, we never figured out what it was. good informative video man, I love those cars

Turn the key on and let the security light flash for 10 minutes until the light stops flashing. Now turn the key off for 5 seconds and then start the car. The new lock cylinder has now been relearned...

You say when you replace both you had to have it reprogram do you have to send it to a locksmith to have it reprogram or can that be done by the owner

Sometimes just tapping the key with my pocket knife will let the key come out.
