Warning: Always disable the airbags before working in the vicinity of the steering wheel, instrument panel. - Авто та транспорт
You do NOT have to remove the airbag or steering wheel. If you didn't know, well you did more work than required but got it done. Once you remove the lower panels under the dash remove the lower cover of the steering column by removing the two T20 torx fasteners on the bottom and then separate the lower cover from the top cover. To remove the top cover you must look directly up at it from the floor board. You will see one external torx bolt on each side which requires a size E5 torx socket (These fasteners will look like the end of the tool you removed the other fasteners with). Unscrew those and the top cover comes right off. After that just remove the two fasteners holding the switch to the column and undo the two electrical connections and remove said switch.
Excellent video! Thanks so much! I just watched it for how to remove the airbag. I was stumped. I'm in the process of changing the clockspring because none of my steering wheel functions work.
Thanks again and keep em coming!
I also just replaced mine in a 2002 impala, just turn the wheel to the left to get behind it, DONT TAKE IT OFF!! also, you do not need a inverted star bit, I used a 6 point 5/32 bit and it fits perfectly. Also, no videos show you how to easily remove the metal plate that blocks the wire harness for the switch, there are 4 Philips screws and then 4 10mm screws that you can see real easy if you look for them, you’ll need a 6” extension and a drill/ impact driver... this guy is making it way harder than it should be!!
Best vid I seen that help me to remove my steering wheel ... can't wait so excited
Don't need take out steering wheel he just did extra work
A nice video. Teaches, in general, how to remove the Air Bag & Steering Wheel, but for the 'Turn Switch Removal' it is not necessary although it gives better access to the switch. A video publicized by '1A Auto' shows how to replace the switch without removing the steering wheel. Thanks anyway, I liked this video.
I concur... It definitely shows me how to replace the "turn signal cancelling cam"
THANK YOU!!!!! You just saved the day bro! 🖒
I appreciate all your videos
Thanks for taking the time to post your immense and helpful step by step. It helped me tons. 👍
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the informative video.
Take care!
Smashing tutorial mate :-)
Never apoligise, your helping people and its appreciated.
Hopefully that switch will fix someones impala :-)
Never seen a "J" puller (except in your vids), love the way a good tool just makes the job so much nicer :-)
It seems like those j pullers are only used on GMs.
very good video instruction, many hearty thanks sir !
Can u maybe show us where that third switch actually is they have these things called flash lights u can light up underneath the dash and show us it would be nice
Thanks for the how-to! Now I can ditch the ugly worn out Impala steering wheel in favor of a monte wheel
Great video. EXCELLENT camera work. I'm hoping I can get the switch out without pulling the steering wheel since I don't have that puller. robinsonauto video shows it being done. Tough angle but he broke it loose - position the steering wheel top hole, at the 9:00 position to give you a shot at the lower screw. Thanks for helping out the do-it-yourselfers!.
Yes it is that one screw which gives you the problem.
the horn on my 2002 impala stopped sounding UNLESS the steering wheel is turned 90+ degrees to the left, then works perfectly. would replacing multifunction switch solve this as well or is there a horn ring and contacter as in older cars?
thhankyou for your help
@ richpin wher able to a test on the switch or was it just somthing obvious, all signs point to the switch.. Any TSB on this thing??
There are 3 plug in connectors I found I have one that isn't plug into anything with only 2 wires in it. Does it go anywhere?
I don't know if you mentioned it , disconnect the negative battery terminal and disconnect the air bag connector in the right I/P junction box. its bright yellow.
+meTimetraveler If i did not you just did.
Wow!! First of all I had no clue what the multifunction switch was and that was one of the reasons that intrigued me into watching the video. Secondly, once I realized what the "multifunctional switch" or turn signal switch was I became extremely confused. The video I watched prior to this was a video to replace the same part on a 2003 Chevy impala and it only took the guy about 30 minutes. So I had to question myself, did the first guy leave out stuff in his video or is this guy taking the long way. I'd rather not take the long way to get to the same result!
I have switched out the multifunction switch on my 2004 Impala twice within the last 7 months. I didn't remove the airbag either time. I only disconnected the Neg battery cable. After replacing the multifunction switch this last time, the problem still remained. Changing the switch fixed it the first time, and the symptoms are exactly the same as before. It IS possible that the new multifunction switch is defective, but if replacing the new switch doesn't correct the problem, I'm at a loss for the reason the lights won't come on at all. The high beams will only work as long as I hold the dimmer switch in all the time.
were you able to correct the high beam issue? I just pulled my switch out but haven't bought a new one yet. I also have to hold my dimmer switch in all the time for the high beams to work. Let me know what your fix was if you fixed it...thanks
Removing the steering wheel is a waste. I changed one yesterday.
Yeah I died laughing watching this!

How do I hunt for and open are short too ground circuit?
There no need to remover air bag or steering wheel !!!!! Turn the wheel around to reach the second screw ! Just changed mine 2001 impala LS
In his defense, that's how Chilton's has you do it too. Thank you for the video Rich, learned a lot!
ernest morales he must get paid by the hour I replace those switches all the time in 30 mins without pulling the airbag or steering wheel lol
Brenndon McGill Chiton got him looking like an idiot
There is no defense for this though he adds several steps that are absolutely unnecessary
Probably doing it the way GM wants it to be done
richpin where are you located i need my switch done
What do I have to do to get the air bag/horn button to come loose like he did
so did you ruin the clock spring by removing it ?
thanks a lot for the video but I put the new one in in the turn signal in the cruise control in the windshield wiper fluid still doesn't work. the cruise control worked on the old one
These instructions are for the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala (Eighth generation) Turn Signal Cancelling Cam replacement. Once you use a PowerBuilt Streering Wheel Removal Set RENTAL from AutoZone to remove the steering wheel, after you removed the airbag, then you must use "snap-ring pliers" to remove the snap-ring from the Steering Air Coil Kit GM part # 26089982, 26088931, or 26092622 aka "Clock Spring". The next step is that one must use the Lisle 57340 Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool and a small vicegrip to compress the turquoise/emerald spring, which pop the "Lock Plate Ring" GM part # 05694191 up from the lock plate. You can use picks - mine were from AutoZone - to move the lock plate ring from the lock plate... Once removed, then you'll be able to slide the "Turn Signal Cancelling Cam" GM part # 26086061 off the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247. You must be very careful NOT to disrupt the connection of the "Bearing Spring Set" GM part # 15231641 and "Bearing Kit" GM part # 26001827 from the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247.
while this was a well done video, i JUST watched another that didnt remove the steering wheel at all. I feel like that was an extra step that wasnt needed at all and if not done properly could cause a TON of issues
There is one screw which is difficult to remove with the steering wheel in place.
I'm glad you said that. I wss FREAKING OUT when he said remove the steering wheel😲 I said frick it I'll take it to a shop and they can do ALL that. Lol
Didn't have to remove the steering wheel, just used a torx bit and a 1/4" box end wrench to get the horizontal retaining screw. Also may be right may be wrong, but I cut the green and the brown wires and crimped on bullet connectors as I'm not enough of a contortionist to get to the plug on the steering column
The reason i removed the steering wheel is because the manual stated to do it that way.
Where is that cruise control wire located at from the car. When I disconnect it from the the old turn signal switch I lost it.
Everyone, you do not need to remove the steering wheel or air bags to change this switch out, good grief.
You know what's frustrating?
Losing your credit card in your steering column and spending the whole night searching for proper tools to remove your panel.
fml
can u do one explaining how fix the horn plz
Hey Rich,
Great informative video as always. The tool removal tool with the black handle, is it home made or can it be purchased? Thanks Again.
That is a one off piece i made myself.
how do you press the stering wheel back on after you remove it ?
+Adam Mohr Tightening the nut will put the steering wheel back in place.
there is no need to remove the steering wheel to replace this switch,
How long does it take to replace multi switch if you have all correct tools?
Looks like 10 minutes and 19 seconds😊
To replace the turn signal switch on your 2001 Chevy Impala, you can follow these steps:
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical shock or damage.
Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing the screws or clips that hold them in place.
Locate the turn signal switch on the left side of the steering column.
Disconnect the wiring harness that connects the switch to the car's electrical system.
Remove the screws or bolts that hold the switch in place.
Install the new turn signal switch and secure it with screws or bolts.
Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch.
Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Note: The multifunction switch controls not only the turn signals but also other functions such as headlights, wipers, and cruise control. If you are experiencing problems with these functions, you may need to replace the entire multifunction switch.
Have you ever heard of the multi function switch causing the car not to start? We have no start now and erratic fuel gage from day one. Car had been in the shop for three months from the day we bought it over this issue. Turn signals seem to work fine but the high and low beams are hard to change you have to force the switch to work.
I'm not expert but a multifunction switch wouldn't cause the car to not start.. That's a whole other circuit. The circuit for the multifunction switch runs the high beams (on/off), the windshield wipers, cruise control, and turn signals. (solving a turn signal issue right now) The problem for switching high/low beams would be part for the multifunction switch. The erratic fuel guage could be a bad stepper motor inside the dash instrument cluster, or the float is somehow damaged. The float is inside the gas tank with the fuel pump.. electrical issues are very hard to find. That's all. Did you ever get the car fixed? lol.
It's fixed and she is driving it. The car lot took care of it all.
John Rollison Awesome. :) what was your no start issue? lol. also did you have to replace the switch too?
Water in the gas tank for one, two replaced fuel pump and fuel sending unit as it's all in one. The mechanic they were using was just not fixing things right. New mechanic, better results.
John Rollison wow. water in gas tank... makes me wonder how that happen.
I'm assuming you replaced that switch
at 8:33 there is a connector that you are removing. I took mine out and it was a few days before i got to install my new one. I can't for the life of me find where it plugs in. It is the 2 wire connector. What switch does it connect to? Thank you
There is a connector under the dash next the the steering column were it plugs in.
Ya i don't see it at all.
Can't find where it goes. I don't see anything next to column
Ah, your trusty homemade romover tool.
Yes the one and only.
Where exactly does the green with white stripes and brown with white stripes actually go and I don’t mean (RiGhT nExT tO tHe StEeRiNg CaLuM) like where at next to it
Did you ever find it? Having a hard time myself
Do NOT remove the steering wheel!!!
Lets not make it harder than can be DO NOT REMOVE WHEEL OR AIR BAG can all be done just removing panels under street and top cover and lower panels... its a 2 hour job for sure but take Torx 25 bit (NEW BIT IS BEST) on lower switch screw set on torx bit and use 1/4" wrench open end to break the screw free then thumb it off by hand... save lot work from removing wheel.

30 mins
I CAN NOT REMOVE THE TOP PANEL?!?!?!?!
Waste of time removing the steering wheel, it is absolutely not necessary
OMG! Taking out the whole airbag/steering wheel is SO unnecessary! Plenty of other videos that show how to do the switch without that. Done it myself, and I'm about 1/10 mechanic skill.
Its bad
Do not watch this video, it is wrong. Steering wheel removal is not needed.
