I finally got an ignition lock cylinder that works. Yay. Did the three try to crank, and 10 minutes deal. On the 3rd time the security light went out. And I cranked it up. I'm so happy
Replaced ignition lock cylinder on 2001 Impala today and you most definitely do not have to take the dash apart. Simply removed the ignition bezel and popped out the old cylinder with a bent coat hanger (after removing negative battery terminal of course). It took 5 cycles to relearn/program the new part, but it worked!
How did you safely remove the ignition bezel?
Today I replaced a 2003 Impala lock cylinder following your directions. It failed.
I spent half the day doing this, and stumbled upon the correct sequence of programming.
When you get to the programming part, restore power and then:
1. Turn key to on. Security will begin flashing 3x along with battery light 1x wait in this state for 10 minutes, flash sequence will change to security 1x battery 1x.
2. Turn key off, wait 5 seconds.
3. Turn key to start, wait a second and release.
4. Flash sequence is back to security 3x, battery 1x... wait 10 minutes until it's security 1x battery 1x.
5 Turn key to off and wait 5 seconds.
6. Back to 3x and 1x, wait 10 minutes until it's 1x and 1x.
7. Turn key off and wait 5 seconds.
Car should now start.
This cycle of on, wait, off will likely be repeated 3 times before your car starts.
I hope this saves someone time, frustration and expense. I had just about admitted defeat.
Edit: I hooked the car up to a battery charger while doing this, as the car drains quickly.
Hey this maniac behind the wheel just thought your video was very helpful in my first attempt on changeing the ignition switch in my impala but you should. Have mentioned when ould be the correct time to switch the gear back into park had me bambozzelexd striaght out puzzeled about the situation you got me into, my mechanical yoda. May the tools be with you my friend. Untell the next gasket blows. Godspeed
Tim Tracy your a life saver😎
Tim Tracy
How many times did it take you to start your car with your directions?
Tim Tracy, I freakin' love you man! I tried 8 different times to get my ignition to work. I ran across your comment, and BAM!, on the 2nd repeat, it started. You're a life, money, time, and car saver. Hats off to YOU bro.
Tim Tracy--- in step 6...what location did you turn the key to that time? On..or Start?
Thank You. '03 Impala here.. This vid showed me how to remove that giant dash-wide trim piece which is covering lock cylinder, radio/HVAC, etc. I was installing a "XpressKit PLJX GM Self Learning Passlock Override" for which I needed to access the wires going to the ignition cylinder. I ended up taking the (2) 10mm head screws out and removing the entire cylinder+switch assembly out the back of the dash - which was difficult. Getting it back in was also difficult.. but the Override module seems to have cured the dreaded Passlock "Security" No-Start .. well worth the $27 and 2 hours of hassle.. if I did it again I would leave the cylinder in place thus not even having to remove giant trim piece but would struggle more upside down under the dash to access the bundle of wires.. or pay someone younger to do it..
Where can i get this passlock overide kit for 27.00 please my 03 impala wont stary
Do I understand that you able to get rid of the security lock by doing what you did cuz I'm trying to get mine out and the deal isn't going to charge a fortune and they'll just replace it
I don't want to seem rude or knowitall. But I work as a locksmith. You can remove this cylinder in 30 seconds without removing any panels. But, you do need a gm cylinder removal tool. It sneaks behind and pops it out. I won't call it easy. But I'd much rather do that then this. This man's method is good if that isn't available tho. And he teaches it well
were do you get one?
How do I change it if the key don't turn I took the dashboard half way off and took the lock box down
link to tool?
@@kevinjohnson2125 drill out the ignition... measure the key to the drill bit and mark the bit so you dont drill to far. you have to wiggle the drill bit some to get, you can then put a screw driver in to turn the ignition... mine actually turned while drilling.
Help. My key or my spare wont turn the ignition to move the gear shift i have a 2000 chevy impala also can you tell me which ignition with new key i can buy on amazon im desperate thank u
Thanks it works 😌😎👊
It's crazy how much of the dash you have to take apart to get the cylinder out. I took the ignition cylinder out of my 03 F150 the other day because I was replacing the shift tube bushings and it was super easy.
InternetDude my key won't turn how can I remove the it without it turning
how can I remove it if the key won't turn
I heard that you lift the key about 1/8" in the lock and then turn it.
Very good information thanyou
Thank you
Great video thanks!
Glad you liked it!
For everyone no being able to turn the key. Put the key in the ignition and smack it a few times firmly with a rubber mallet or a hammer with padding on it. this worked for me after a couple smacks. Smack at your own risk though. Don't bend the key.
I did this . The key turns fine now. Do you recommend I still change the lock cylinder ?
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
Hello, how are you? I have a question. A few days ago I lost my only copy of the ignition key and I have a copy that only opens the car. They told me that in those cars, the key has an internal resistance. Do you know how I can find out what type of key it uses? ?
Hey Rich, this is way late but on your rebuilding Walbro carb at 15:58 , the blue diaphragm covers the screen hole. Am I missing something?
Yes it has been a long time so i went back and looked at the video and it looks like the blue diaphragm and gasket is the same as the old one i took off and in the same place.Maybe someone would correct me but i believe the blue piece must act like a diaphragm in a pump.
Hey Rich. On the last couple steps, is it possible to remove the cylinder if the key is unable to turn?
In most cases the cylinder has to be in a different location that lock to remove.
What is black housing that comes with new switch?
Thanks. Mine started just doing nothing once in a while. I turn the key, my instruments light up, go to start.... ...... nothing. When this happens I have to turn the key on and off like 5 to 10 times before she tries to crank.
I think its my switch, but im not sure.
Cars 19 years old only has 75K on it. Was never a daily or kept outside, Ive been driving it for under 6 months and have already had to change a fuel pump, a fuel pump relay and the gas cap.
I have same exact problem. Got the part, looking at this now about to change it.
Sitting/low miles is hard on vehicles
What u do if this don’t work after putting new switch in??????
I'd love to do it this way, but I don't have the key at all. It got lost at the lake. Now what?
I have a 2005 chevy impala, I just replaced the ignition cylinder butvthe security light is still on. How do I get the security light to go off?? Please help
Did you ever get it fixed? I have a 2003 impala and it turns on and runs good but the security light won't go away
Hold the display button down on your clock until SETTINGS pops up, use seek arrows to find alarm, go to off with the 1 button, click display button again to select and done.
Think thats how i got mine out of there.
Thank you
I took off the new ignition switch and then put the old one back on and then put the new ignition switch again and that's how I got it fixed a buddy of mine told me to try what you mentioned in the comment but it did not work for me so I did the work all over again and that work. Thank you
I've replaced the cylinder and waited 10 minutes like you said till the security light turns off and it still dont start any ideas
See my comment above. A lot late, I'm sure.
Swtich or bad coils maybe
How much would labor be at a shop?
does this method is for a chavy mullyboo as well?
So, you are saying an old key will fit a new lock?
These mafuckas
how is the old key going to turn the new cylinder? unless it's keyed for it.
The new cylinder comes with a key.
What this guy in the video didn't tell you is he replaced the barrel, and not the inside mechanism. (Which is what comes with the key)
If you want a cylinder barrel and the ignition it's $130
If you just want the barrel, which this guy did, it's $50.
If you look on autozones website you can see what I mean.
Has the key code in the cylinder?
Just changed mine in a 2000 Impala LS and it started right away without having to program the new switch. Is that ok?
Same did you have any problems afterwards
@@SpartanV295nope, been working fine ever since. Lol
@@stonecrazy3 okay cool thank you
What do you do if you forgot to disconnect the battery before replacement?
It blows up .
But my key won’t turn so how can I shift the gear down
How do I disable airbags? 04 Impala. Thanx
Through stereo
I put the new one in and it don’t turn enough to get the new key out.. I’m lost
How do you recode
Yea how do you recode it!!¡!!
More shots of that "button" would be helpful. Not showing what the pick did when you pulled the lock out made that portion useless. Was it a pull or push button? Was is a sideways slide button? If it was my first time I would not know what I'm doing with the pick. Just poking it around in there scared of causing damage. Maybe you can see in there I don't know.
Sorry about that i should have somehow got a shot of the release button.
Funny , My 8 year old son noticed it immediately.
What if I don’t have the original key?
What if you can't turn your key at all
For real
Had to drill mine shoved flat head in n twist and unfortunately has to be done to pull cylinder to release other plugs
@@ismaelmeraz7922 wait what did u have to do im confused
I need to replace mine what did u end up doing please my key eont turn either
@@laterrancereaves5646 what did u do im confused too and i need to frplace mine key wont turn
Hey rich, great videos. O5 impala I did the tapping on the key to get the key unstuck. It's seems to work well now. do you still recommend to change out the lock cylinder ?
Thanks!
I honestly wouldn't do that, it would be a hassle to replace it for sure, else you can do it like me, just carry your original key for the lock cylinder and the new key to start up the car
I have a 2002 Chevy Impala and I hate the security ignition I would like it to be replaced so it works like a regular key could somebody please explain how that would work for me I would have to take the car to a mechanic to do it I don't want to use the dealer they'll just replace that whole unit and charge me a small fortune
How do u recode the lock cylinder to a new key?
I replaced mine and it started right away the security light did not come on 🤷♂️
What do you do if you lose your key?
my 2003 Chevy impala im replacing it with a new cylinder switch, but my cylinder switch has security build in it, how do i program it to the car ?
I can't turn key back to full off position. Please Help!
Put it back in park
😂😂
Watch the video and replace the lock the only thing is the car started up after I turn the key so I didn't have to program
They didnt make that too fast to get to.
That lock + coding is unusual.
Did the dashboard end up on the back seats lol, thats where i put breakables.
Yes i very carefully put the dash in the back seat so i would not smash it.....lol
I don't want to replace ignition switch I just want to tighten the switch
This is literally impossible most people here can't do this because the key wont turn just like me
Daphne Gonzales thank you that's the problem
He showed a trick to try to get it to turn. I also saw you can push in and down and that can get it to turn.
you have to wiggle it around while shaking it, it will move eventually
I tried the tapping to remove lock cylinder and still wont budge. What else could i do??? 😞😞
Try to work some penetrant lube into the key hole, let sit for a few min and then try again with the tapping and turning. The cylinders and internals get stuck over years of use. May need a hammer instead of the gentle tapping that was shown in this video
I cringe every time you use that metal trim tool on plastic trim. PLEASE invest a few dollars into a set of plastic trim tools.
As soon as i can i am going to get those plastic trim tools.
Cost me $450.00
Old method!!!
Just drop it off at your nearest mechanic because this is too much
Useless video because u didn’t tell how to code the new cylinder... and it’s tricky... but I know how...
When I turn the ignition, doesn't want to start, I have to try turning it on for a 1 minute or 2 and than it starts and also the security light comes on and smokes comes out of the tail pipe and than it disappears, not pure white, a little black and greyish. What could it be possibly? And it only happens in the morning
