I always helps to hear another person explain what electrical symptoms are being experienced. In this situation the ignition switch connecters between the plugs, and sotter contacts does not connect power to the brake relay, so no brake lights. I think these ignition wire harnesses are replacement quality despite the wire and wire insulation being a good reasonable quality. It's a waste of copper.
Thanks Juan I do try to describe things in a little bit too much detail sometimes in my videos. Some people get it , some people don’t but I make them for people just like you that appreciate the extra effort so welcome to the channel we’re very happy to have you.
Hi Clay, I would like to point out that out of all the videos I have watched on this issue , you point out exactly what anyone will need to do to get this repair done right. Much appreciated.
Thank you Clay for taking the time to educate those of us who are older than ECM's and PCM's and computers...My DD is a 72 C/10, I just got a great deal on a 2002 3/4 ton Chevy Express. Turn the key on all the lights bells and whistles work but no crank. Climb under the van and short the solenoid, fired right up! I'm thinking the Ignition switch. Already bought a new battery and starter so hopefully the switch will do it. It does turn rather hard, have to wiggle the key so...Thanks again for the insight!
Well, that’s because I have things that I live by like it’s not only how to do something but why you were doing it in the first place… I’m glad it helped you out. Welcome to the Channell. Very happy to have folks like you.
Just a FYI for folks with 96-99 OBS trucks and Surburbans. Most of this video applies. There is no gear where it goes under the key. It is slotted to match the column. It installs pointed toward the column. Match the tab to the install point. There are two screws that hold it in place. The top one is nearly impossible to get to. I cut the tab off with a multi tool and replaced it with a different type of screw that you can get to with a screw driver. A socket won't fit.
Thank you Clay,, My key lock is getting looser and harder to turn on start up windows and locks are acting like they have half power and some fuses under hood bearly light up the test light .I cleaned and checked fuses and box both compartments it helped a bit until I found this video.thank you for your help I just ordered the new lock and key .and your so right,I can do it to. Peaxce brother.
Thank you bro I've done change the ignition coil camshaft sensor now I'll do this thank you for your in-depth video if you can do it anybody can do it right right👍🏼😊
Awesome video clay! Thanks for the that! Got the same vehicle but mine is still cranking… starter is engaging good battery but it won’t stay on what do you think? Thank you
Electrical portion of the ignition possibly if I’m understanding you correctly, it shuts off as soon as you let go of the key That’s assuming that there’s not a security light flashing on my dash sorry I didn’t see this message before
Thanks for the tips and encouragement clay great video! My 98 suburban was broken into last year and ever since I’ve had weird electrical issues. For instance with the starter jumping early making a loud ping on the flex plate when turning key to accessories, as if the truck thinks I’m cranking it for a millisecond but quits. Then the climate controls would cause the ABS and other dash lights to turn on and the air cuts off. Other times it would be the lights on the shift indicator still on or the 4x4 push button module not shutting down after pulling the key out. Some real electrical funk going on. Everything in my mind and UA-cam is telling me the ignition harness would cure my problems. Thoughts?
Well, the only thing that comes to mind from experience is I’ve had several fuse boxes on Chevrolet that get corroded on the inside in between the wafer boards so I disassembled them clean the corrosion out and put them back together together. I can’t say for certain that that’s your problem. Obviously, you would also want to check the grounds. From my experience. Them are the two major problems. It’s also possible that the electronic part of your ignition is defective as well sometimes after years and years of use like 25 in your situation it’s very possible that it is worn out and not making proper connections inside the steering column
Hey Clay I replaced my ignition switch on my Silverado. It will start but now when I start the truck my odometer goes off. I have no blower or ac. No wipers and no access to my 4x4 can you help in any way?
Really good video Clay. I'm just wondering what is the rigid cable to the back and bottom of the tumbler with the white clip? Some jerk tried to steal my truck and popped the switch out and rotated it and got it started for one second and it quit. Now the key tumbler doesn't rotate with the key in it and seems like it's trying to pull that cable and it can't.
I believe that you’re talking about your shift lock cable I can’t say for certain but I think that’s what that does. Sorry to hear somebody tried to steal your truck. Luckily they didn’t get very far. I would recommend replacing the steering column Then doing the key reprogram procedure that should fix up all of your issues . I believe the key Reprogram procedure is just 10 minutes on three times but you may want to double check
Question regarding the ignition switch. A mistake was made while installing a few months ago. Got it to work, but basically, the dial/teeth got moved out of the original position they should have been in. Now, the vehicle is very hard to start. I want to try to fix it. Is there any way to get it back into the correct place once it's messed up? Also, when the ignition switch was replaced a few months ago.... none of those wires were disconnected... We just removed the outer piece of the steering wheel and changed out the ignition switch. It did work for a little while.
My multimeter reads 12.5 volts only on when the key is turned to on. No voltage for accessory’s or start . Does this mean the switch itself is bad or the green cable connector I’m testing the voltage from is bad?
Honestly I can’t remember but I do know that this was not the only problem with this truck it also needed the ignition module located near the coil which was crazy that was the first time I’ve ever had to change one of them but I don’t work on a lot of S tens thanks for the kind words to Juan I greatly appreciate it and welcome to the Channell we’re happy to have you
More than likely, that’s a broken wire between your a pillar and your door. You know how you open the door and close the door all the time eventually, it breaks wires and the Warriors probably broken inside the little rubber accordion tube, allowing it to ground out so more than likely that’s the problem not your ignition switch, but good thinking that’s a possibility as well, but unlikely the problem
Hi I have read that a bad ignition switch could lead to the battery light coming on and the ac functions no longer work so have u heard anything like that? New battery New Alternator 01 GMC Yukon
Nice Video... My problem on 2000 Pontiac is that when it is very cold outside... when I turn off the car... the key does not turn all the way back. I have to press the override button which then lets me turn the key all the way back to remove. I have replaced the ignition cylinder.. but the problem persists. Any thoughts?
Hey I having prob with a 02 tracker with it turn off key out of it the headlights will come on dash lights will flicker it clicks down at fuse box would it be key switch or light switch it started this last night I woke up look out side and head lights was on
The radio in my uplander van usually stays on for 10-15 minutes after I switch the key off. But if I switch the key off then open the door it would turn off the radio, all normal for my van. However it just recently started staying on even after taking the key out and opening the door. Could the ignition be bad and causing this issue?
How do you jump the circuit to make it start im have ignition problems but dont have much time to do repairs and i need it running for the time being please help 🙏
Hi Clay, Great video! After running of the thieves that almost stole my 1999 Suburban they left me a screw driver in trade of a key. The screw driver worked for a year. Finally drilled out the ignition key lock cylinder and the new cylinder wouldn’t turn the key so pulled it out and used a big screwdriver to start the truck but I can’t turn it off unless I remove the fuel pump relay. The dashboard is lit up even though I have the ignition in the off position. Any thoughts? Thx for your opinion!
Hey thanks for the information on the ignition switch I have a question I have a 2002 Chevrolet blazer there’s a noise coming from the inside of my car and it’s draining the battery like a little humming noise when I put the key in the ignition and when I don’t put the key in the ignition noise is coming from around my radio CD player and every time I go in the car the battery is drained
Electrical portion of your ignition is probably worn out, causing the ignition not to turn off completely You could do a draw test on your fuse box, but I think ultimately it’s going to bring you back to the electrical portion of the ignition, but that would be a way that you could definitively say what it is. So I would investigate that because I’m not always correct.
Im replacing all that as well. But I'm a UA-cam and Google mechanic so. I've gotten every part done. But I can't remember where these last two wires came off or go. It's on the wiring harness part towards the foot pedals. Their both clip kinda things. Each have a black wire and a green with white stripe wire. Not sure where they go
