One of the best Megadeth songs. Not only great instruments but one of Dave's best vocal performances and meaningful lyrics. What more could you ask for? A great reaction and we got that too!

Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitar for Metallica .... when the original bass player for Metallica 'Cliff Burton' was killed in a bus accident, Dave wrote this song ...they were still friends

    * waits for the chorus to hit *
    Dave Mustaine: 😎👉🏼👉🏼
This song was written under very precarious circumstances. Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton, who Mustaine had been closest to while he was in Metallica, had passed away in a Swedish bus accident in 1986, after winning a seat on it in a game of cards played with Dave's replacement, Kirk Hammett. Metallica were out on their Master of Puppets tour, at the time. Dave hadn't found out about it until it had been on the news, and absolutely no one from Metallica's camp had brought it to his attention. His family weren't interested in supporting him. He didn't have very many friends. He'd gone out on the street, bought some heroin, and thrown an instrumental together. This song's lyrics aren't directly about Cliff's passing, though. Dave had never been supported by family members, lovers, friends, or anyone else until he'd formed Megadeth, and this song is about his aggressive disappointment towards the lot of them, particularly girlfriends who had used him while he was vulnerable. The laughs and screams played on Dave's guitar were entirely deliberate.
I think one incredible trait of this song is that it's so catchy without having a single repetition in its structure. No verses, no pre-chorus, no chorus, the solos are split into discordant quasi-harmonies; it's a very odd song, and Megadeth aren't the kind of band that can ever be replicated, because of it. This song is one of the most popular ballads they've got, without actually being a ballad. It's artistry, in the purest form.
This track is obviously from So Far, So Good...So What!, Megadeth's 3rd album, just as Set the World Afire is, and it's got the same lineup:
    Dave Mustaine - guitar, vocals
David Ellefson - bass guitar, backing vocals
    Jeff Young - guitar
    Chuck Behler - drums
This album is a secret goldmine, though whatever comes next will certainly be an eventful experience. I'll probably decide what I'd recommend, soon. Maybe something groovy, idk!!! I'm appreciating this reaction for a long time, Randi!!! Thank you for doing it!!! 🥰💙

With faint echoes of Metallica, this song carried regret, and hurt. On hearing it, I thought I was living another persons nightmare. With your explanation, I understand why.

I could sit for hours and listen to your voice. It is so soothing. If you enjoyed this song, there are nearly forty years of Megadeth to listen to. Here are a few suggestions. Theses songs come off several of the first 5 Megadeth albums. If you want a more groove like song listen to these songs, Peace Sells, Symphony of Destruction and or Angry Again. If you want something harder like "Wake up Dead", try Rattlehead and or My Last Word. For heavier Megadeth try Good Mourning/Black Friday (Lyric version) and or Holy Wars... The Punishment Due. We all look forward to your next Megadeth reaction.

Dave actually wrote this song in one sitting overnight after he was told Cliff had died in the tour bus accident. But the song has a couple of. Meanings, most importantly how his girlfriend at the time was not there for him so he had to deal with the loss of his friend, still dealing with the fact and scenario in which he was kicked out of that band, and well the most terrible part of it all the guilt he felt for having immersed himself in the world of black magic and the spell he cast on a certain Metallica member who by dumb luck had switched bunks with Cliff that night so Cliff was in the bunk where that other band member was supposed to be that night if the crash and it caused the death of Cliff and not that other band member with a Jerry Curl. Ultimately when Dave stopped taking drugs and drinking and met his current wife he never performed the song that had to do with that whole tragedy. That song was The Conjuring from their Peace Sells Album. Only Dave knows how low he got at the time he wrote this song and the woman he loved and wanted to help him didn’t give a shit, dirty bitch.

"Not yet, David Bowie. You just settle down. Whew... those pants are distracting!!!" 😅😄
A common response to seeing David Bowie. 😏
Fun fact: Dave Mustaine has said the first album that he'd ever bought is ChangesOneBowie, a 1976 greatest hits album. Heroes is a part of Bowie's ChangesTwoBowie era, covering the very end of his RCA period. It's a full circle, isn't it? 😃😄

"In My Darkest Hour" contains emotional lyrics which deal with loneliness and isolation, and was written by Mustaine shortly after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.
This version is from the remastered/remixed album (2004). Excluding the initial album, which was very positive on the re-release, the others that followed did not have the same satisfactory result, because Mustaine had to re-record a new vocal, since the backup of the original voices of most of the songs were lost. So the original version from that era is infinitely better than this new re-released version. Anyway, I recommend looking for the original versions of the released albums.

Megadeth’s best song IMO closely followed by Holy Wars which is definitely one to check out.
Please react to pearl jam black or Dimash Kudioburgen SOS at Slavic bazar , he’ll blow you away with his vocal control and range, he’s considered the best singer in the world atm and I’d have to agree .

Chris has supplied a bucket load of facts surrounding the song. (Thanks for that Chris). And that's help with understanding the mind set of the writer.
This held me in an unusual state of sorrow combined with some anguish, as the telling of the story in the song carried an ability to feel some of the pain the Dave suffered at the loss of a dear friend. And the things that went through his mind during that period.
But before the lyrics cam in, I was away with the faeries. At FL490 high over enemy territory, a BUFF as my mount. the last few mile before our run in to the DZ. The night was clear, as was the radar screen. This was our time to deliver with no hinderances. Jamming equipment working well. All systems green. No turning back. 25 degree turn to line up with the target. Now heading true north.
Bang..... Bang bang. They've found us. Flack exploding dead ahead, and off the poet side. As yet, they haven't found our altitude. The explosions are a couple of thousand feet below us. Dazzled by the flack,, it's hard to adjust my eyes to the panel before me.
And the singing come in , the mood changes 100% from wild adventure, to one of solemnity, and sadness. The changes in the music were all surprises, and plentiful. Very skilfully arranged, and conducted, so as too keep everything well in it's place, and avoid a decent into chaos. I could detect the Metallica pedigree, which was fitting as a tribute to Cliff Burton..
The lyrics ran their course. Leaving the instruments to put me back in the BUFF. Bang, Bang, and the sound of shrapnel taring the skin of our plane. "Damn"!! The capt exclaimed, as some of his panel went dark. Now we're running in blind.. Explosions all around, they've found our height. More sound of metal ripping through metal, and the smell of smoke came into our masks. The run was aborted, we had no way of identifying the target. Full throttle, and taking the 60 year old bird passed her permitted envelope, into higher altitude, through 600 mph, and execute a turn far too tight for her main spar to take. Now at 270 degrees and heading for the fastest way out of this airspace, isn't enough. Still we're taking damage from flack. A missile shot past us, unable to lock on. "These guys mean to destroy us", cam through the intercom. Bang, bang, BANG, that one blew right under us, ripping big holes through the fuselage. And Capt reports we're losing height, and hydraulic pressure. Fuel gushing from the starboard wing, and engines 6 and 7 are being shut down due to fire. Can she hold out for another hour? We need that hour to reach friendly skies. Moment after this, the radio chirps into life with a middle eastern accent. "USAF bomber, we're approaching your position, and demand the you follow us. Looking out of my window, a pair of Migs are levelling off, just a few meters away. But the radar is clear. Oh no. They are equipped with jamming tech too. Capt, looked over at me, and I could see in his eyes, that he wasn't in the mood for surrendering. My stomach sank, knowing what he had in mind. Now going down through 32000 feet, we knew it was a very long free fall through -67 degrees temps. He ordered us to prepare for evacuation. And we did so, and waited for the command to bail. That icy wind cut through us like thousand of daggers. Flight engineer asked me what Capt was doing, and does he intend to go with us, of after us. I had to shrug, not knowing his intentions. The capt was a likeable type, a great leader. And always put his crew first. Somewhat a risk taker. Just last month he totalled a Shelby GT500, seeing how fast it would go, he ran out of runway before he found out. Braking too late, he skidded sideways into a solid concrete bunker, left since the last war. He walked from the wreck laughing, saying, "I'll do it next time. You'll see". No family, he was married to his career, and had no interest outside flying and fast cars. This made him unpredictable in time like these. He told us to look out for the small lake to the north west, and meet up on the north shore. He gave the order to bail, and so we did. Simultaneously, we left the half wrecked airframe, the hole in her belly was big enough for us all to go at once. Watching the feet drop off on the dial attached to the strap. A quick glance up, and one of the Migs had broken formation. Was it after us?, or the Buff? We've been train this this many time. But it's stall scary. Just getting to 1200 feet AGL. Any moment now. I took hold of the cord to release the chute. And a blinding light lit up the whole terrain beneath us, followed by a thunderous explosion. Instantly look behind, the BUFF was in a thousand pieces going in all directions, and one of the Migs got hit in the exploding B-53, and was on fire. The captain, where's the Captain. I knew what had happened, He had set the self destruct. Preventing the enemy from getting their hands on our material. The bombs were strait forward non nukes. Our adventure had stopped here is the music faded to black. What a ride. There are cliff hangers but parachute hangers? Oh for another five minutes of tis song.
