After I heard this, Megadeth became my favorite, and that's never changed. The woman, Diana Aragon, was Dave's fiancée, his muse. I love the totally broken voice he had in that era. Especially that album. Totally destroy attitude, that let feelings on the sleeve Before he changed to the RIP nasal thing.
Glad you came back to Megadeth. Another song I’d recommend is a personal favorite of mine called Take No Prisoners. Features a short but awesome little tapping bass fill by David Ellefson, along with the song being some of his best bass playing with the band.
me and 4 of my friends were in the official music video for this song ,, recorded at the Country Club in Reseda ,California ,, it was made for the movie,Decline of Western Civilization " The Metal Years" what an amazing video and day that was ,, Rock on Doug !!!
Please check out Death anything off symbolic. The title track is incredible or without judgement. Also the band Havok has been carrying the thrash metal torch and I would love a reaction to intention to deceive. The lyrics of these bands and the technical details are unparalleled
Great reaction!! This is one of my favorite bands and I've been listening to them a lot recently, mainly concert footage from 1992! Another favorite band of mine, more recently, is Bloodywood. They are from India and incorporate some of their traditional instruments in with metal. "Aaj" is the song I'd love to see you react to. There are a lot of surprises in there! The song is half in English and half in Hindi (with subtitles). I just subscribed 🙂
Love the LP you have in your back. I have seen about 50% of your videos on your channel. I'm pretty happy to see you have discovered too many music so important to all of us.
As a 16-year-old with a relatively new driver's license, I was blasting this song in my dad's car while scattering away from a busted high school party. The song sped up and so did I, that's when the tree jumped out in front of my car officer. Good or bad that memory is always associated with this song. 🤘🤘🤘
This is by far my favorite Megadeth song; I think my second favorite is "Mary Jane" from the same album. Great to hear more Megadeth on the channel and hear your positivity for it.
As a Metallica fan, I also like Megadeth as well and during my freshman year in highschool I had this album in my tape player and WORE IT OUT. Lots of hidden gems on this record
I just recently got into metal... well only Metallica lol. i like their vocals and lyrcisim combined with heavy (but not too heavy) music. so megadeth is something that caught my attention too and i really like them
Glad you appreciated the musical aspect, it's crazy that Dave will swear to you that he doesn't know music theory and never used it to write music. Their current guitarist Kiko says that Dave does know it, as proved by his music, it's all just inside him. Always love watching trained musicians dissect his music.
Can understand not immediately taking to Holy Wars, when I was first getting into metal and getting recommended Megadeth I gave Holy Wars a listen and didn't really love it, seemed very complicated but not what I was expecting. Eventually I tried listening to more of their music and they've been my favourite band since, so I'd love to see a reaction to Tornado of Souls (the shift in tone followed by the solo at about 2 minutes is pretty much perfect), My Last Words(Really cool riff, awesome lyrics and great solo) or Good Mourning/Black Friday (not as melodic as the other two but a very interesting composition + a really cool opening)
Since everyone is dropping some suggesions, I'll drop "Hangar 18". I think it's one of their most interesting songs musically. "Peace Sells" has a great political and social lyrics if you go on that anti-war hype again.
I'm getting back into playing guitar (as a fun hobby) after years of not even owning a guitar let alone playing. Recently I've been playing this song a bit as it's one of the ones that I've remembered relatively quickly how to play a lot of for some reason. Anyway, in the last few days I've been wondering "how would the daily Doug react to this?" and here is my answer. Thank you for choosing this one. Diane is truly Dave's muse as she has inspired a few of his songs.
Possibly one of the BEST songs he has ever written. It is truly honest. The music comp is discussion worthy. The lyrical content is also very discussion worthy. It sinks, builds, then sinks and builds again. It's so very human. Funny thing is, when this came out I was 13 and the time period was rife with "metal scare" among parent groups. I can remember my parents confiscating the cassette and not being aloud to have access to material of this nature. Too bad they didn't really take the time to figure out what is was all about.....but that is another discussion for another time. Here I am, about to turn 48, and it is still relevant and artful. Thanks Mr. Mustane.
Fun fact. I saw Megadeth at The Country Club in Reseda California playing this song for the music documentary “Decline Of The Western Civilization 2 : The Metal Years”
I can understand when people say they have issues with his voice. Dave's vocals aren't his strong point, but there's no one else I could think of who could replace him. I'm happy to own seven of their albums. There's three songs I'd like to suggest if you continue down this rabbit hole. "Looking Down the Cross," "My Last Words," and "Victory." I'd definitely appreciate your insights.
Love your take on this track, Doug! And thanks for pointing out the modalizing with the Dorian and Phrygian scales-I need to try that! I would love to hear your take on "Washington is Next," when you get to doing more Megadeth. They lyrics seem to be applying biblical prophecy to modern politics, and the bassline is just unbelievably dope.
I was just listening through a few songs trying to think about what might be interesting to you. The first thing I thought of was Dread and a Fugitive Mind. I recently learned to play it on guitar. It got a bittersweet vibe and makes heavy use of the contrast between loud and quiet. I might be biased but I like those slightly usual arpeggios and how they change rhythm. I like their song Lucretia. It is also on the bittersweet side of things and how the intro resolves is just orgasmic. Tornado of Souls is a great song, but if you weren't feeling Holy Wars I don't see why you would dig that one. I can also play a bit of The Poison was the Cure and Polaris. The former is just stupid fast and fun to play, while the latter has a cool triplet thing going on, but they wouldn't make for the best suggestions for the next metal Monday.
Next ones: "PEACE SELLS" from their 1986 album "Peace sells... but who's buying", a complete masterpiece, both musically that lyrically...and/or: "LAST RITES: LOVED TO DETH" from their very 1st album, with that piano introduction!! Give it a shot Mr. Doug 👍🤟🤟
Yeah, more Megadeth please! Thanks Doug, i would suggest songs like "Conquer or Die/Lying in State", and "Fatal Illusion" from Dystopia album, or "Ashes in your Mouth", from Cowntdown to Extinsion
"I walk, I walk alone, To the promised land, There's a better place for me But it's far, far away, Everlasting life for me, In a perfect world But I got to die first, Please, God, send me on my way..." I think those lyrics were inspired by something Cliff Burton used to say about dying and the afterlife... Metallica used a poem that Cliff wrote for the track 'To live is to die" similar to this ...I watched a documentary about Cliff Burton, and his sister Connie talked about her brother. They used to live w/ their parents when Cliff was in Metallica, and Connie said he would turn on Bill Graham Ministries on TV and watch in the mornings... And even though he wasn't religious, it was very odd that Cliff would quote Bill Graham Ministries about 'the Kingdom of salvation' and 'the promised land'... Even Metallica would hear Cliff talking about the afterlife from what he heard on TV; Cliff Burton died at age 24... maybe he unconsciously had a premonition that he was not going to live a long life. His death affected everyone, including Connie, who got into heavy drug abuse afterwards. When u listen to the Metallica instrumental 'Orion' that Burton had helped compose, there is a slow, sad section on the track w/ his bass... it sounded almost like he was saying goodbye to anyone listening... Even the beginning of the track sounded like a huge vehicle approaching from a distance until the drums kick in and then James' guitar starts ripping (Cliff was killed in a bus accident on tour).
In the darkest hour The heavy feeling that it brings solidly and it wants to go to anger and sadness, and it ends ins some kind of overcome or acceptance
Doug gets it. It's never been about how good Dave can sing, it's always been about the emotion and the attitude that he conveys and how will it fits with the amazing Megadeth sound.
Hey Doug! I think you would appreciate "Conquer or Die" by Megadeth off of their album Dystopia. There is a classical guitar intro with a banging guitar solo!! Thanks for all you do
I haven't been through your channel much but Megadeth has an amazing anthology and one much much larger than most metal bands their age. I suggest: Elysian Fields, Trust, Ecstacy, Countdown To Extinction and Peace Sells (But Who's Buying).
This is one of those real arm-hair raisers that, to me, are a Mustaine hallmark. Sounds as amazing and impactful as the first time I listened when it was brand new.
I love your videos, I’d love to see you take another look at Savatage again - edge of thorns is a great song, or even one of their two rock operas they wrote - streets and dead winter dead are both really interesting. If you’re looking for more Megadeth though, I’d definitely recommend Symphony of Destruction, and A Tout Le Monde
Good analysis. I agree with your scrutiny of the human feelings behind this music that you made with a simple and direct language but with all the necessary tools to understand what was in the soul of its creator.
this is my favorite MEGADETH song!! my 3 favorite song overall. W.A.S.P -forever free / Black Sabbath - lonely is the word / Megadeth - IN My Darkest Hour
Conquer or Die is the one. As a plus, it would be fitting after My Darkest Hour, from the title anyway. Conquer or die is an instrumental. Kiko loureiro is with them on it. I think it was pretty soon after him joining. He still tours with them.
I saw Megadeth in Sacramento at the Eldorado Saloon in '87 before this album came out. Dave dedicated this song to Cliff, no one had heard it yet, but it was amazing. I was also right in the front, I could reach up and touch Dave in that black leather jacket with the tassels.... good times!
Wee need you to watch Tornado of Souls!!!!!! the solo is considered as pretty much the best metal guitar solo ever. Megadeth is known for always having the best guitarists and Marty Friedman that played the solo in Tornado, is truly the best of the bests.

That's the remastered version. The Original version from '88 doesn't have those two chords at the beginning of the song.
I wondered what that was..lol.
I love the totally broken voice he had in that era. Especially that album.
Totally destroy attitude, that let feelings on the sleeve
Before he changed to the RIP nasal thing.
The song Countdown To Extinction should be next! I’m sure you’ll dig it, it’s very melodic and the lyrics are just beautiful.
This is Megadeth’s finest composition if you ask me. Really beautiful melodies, interesting chord changes, and a great driving rhythm.
I just recently got into metal... well only Metallica lol. i like their vocals and lyrcisim combined with heavy (but not too heavy) music. so megadeth is something that caught my attention too and i really like them
@@Rudi.418 you should also try out Iron Maiden, started out with Metallica to but now I love Iron Maiden a lot more
Glad you appreciated the musical aspect, it's crazy that Dave will swear to you that he doesn't know music theory and never used it to write music. Their current guitarist Kiko says that Dave does know it, as proved by his music, it's all just inside him. Always love watching trained musicians dissect his music.
I saw them on this tour...great lineup. great album. One of my favorite tracks.
Listen to the whole Rust in piece record. That one is a masterpiece. Marty Friedman really came in with a fresh eye for that record.
Amazing how you pick up the keys so quickly. Megadeth definitely plays very intricate licks and riffs.
Love the melancholy of this song
Counterpoint, Holy Wars was the first Megadeth song I heard and was immediately hooked!
Since everyone is dropping some suggesions, I'll drop "Hangar 18". I think it's one of their most interesting songs musically. "Peace Sells" has a great political and social lyrics if you go on that anti-war hype again.
Whaaaa?! Doug diving deep! Nice!
Nice to see Seventh Son in the background... masterpiece album.
Great reaction, and your knowledge pours out in the best way.
Tornado of souls is the one Megadeth song that made me loving them for ever. You should give that one a try it’s amazing
Diane is truly Dave's muse as she has inspired a few of his songs.
iron maiden seven son one of the best metal albums of all time ^_^
Possibly one of the BEST songs he has ever written. Thanks Mr. Mustane.
Fun fact. I saw Megadeth at The Country Club in Reseda California playing this song for the music documentary “Decline Of The Western Civilization 2 : The Metal Years”
This whole album is a very "guilty pleasure" listening experience! I can listen to this whole album anytime!!
Megadeth Last Rites/Loved to Death. It's a pretty interesting one. Starts out with a dark classical sound...
This entire album is a masterpiece.
"Loved to deth" and "A tout le monde" ( this song made me cry, so painful) You will enjoy them
I was just listening through a few songs trying to think about what might be interesting to you.
Thanks for your upload. Again I can only recommend Ghost: "Spillways" (Studio) and/or "Twenties" (Studio)!
Check out Conquer or die
"I walk, I walk alone, To the promised land, There's a better place for me
But it's far, far away, Everlasting life for me, In a perfect world
But I got to die first, Please, God, send me on my way..."
I think those lyrics were inspired by something Cliff Burton used to say about dying and the afterlife...
In the darkest hour
The heavy feeling that it brings solidly and it wants to go to anger and sadness, and it ends ins some kind of overcome or acceptance
Doug gets it. It's never been about how good Dave can sing, it's always been about the emotion and the attitude that he conveys and how will it fits with the amazing Megadeth sound.
My favourite song. It saved my life!
Sounds as amazing and impactful as the first time I listened when it was brand new.
im really glad you liked my (and many others’) favorite megadeth song!
Yeah I remember you talking over the most interesting part of Holy Wars. Gotta listen to the songs, all of it.
HECK YES!!!! So glad you liked it!!!
I'd like to see your take on "Liar" or "Hook in Mouth" from the same album
The first song I ever heard from Megadeth. Thx for the reaction.
this is my favorite MEGADETH song!! my 3 favorite song overall. W.A.S.P -forever free / Black Sabbath - lonely is the word / Megadeth - IN My Darkest Hour
Great commentary and breakdown as usual! Tornado of souls is fantastic and she Wolf is one of my favorites... especially the acoustic version.
Great choice, Doug!
Dave Rocked this! With memories of Cliff🤘🥁🤘
Am I the only one who loved Dave's singing from minute 1? If you've felt where it comes from, you just go with it man. It's raw, ruthless, emotional
I think you would enjoy the composure of their first album. Classical, jazz, and blues, and rock that all stand together.
Thanks Doug 🤘
Conquer or Die is the one. As a plus, it would be fitting after My Darkest Hour, from the title anyway. Conquer or die is an instrumental. Kiko loureiro is with them on it. I think it was pretty soon after him joining. He still tours with them.
I saw Megadeth in Sacramento at the Eldorado Saloon in '87 before this album came out. Dave dedicated this song to Cliff, no one had heard it yet, but it was amazing. I was also right in the front, I could reach up and touch Dave in that black leather jacket with the tassels.... good times!
Love your channel man!!!!
Wee need you to watch Tornado of Souls!!!!!! the solo is considered as pretty much the best metal guitar solo ever.
Megadeth is known for always having the best guitarists and Marty Friedman that played the solo in Tornado, is truly the best of the bests.
