Whenever Lemon mentions a catalyst's "Magic Adjust", he makes it sound like it's a static trait of the weapon. It is for the Pyro Flame and a couple others that don't scale, but the rest of the catalysts' magic adjust changes as your stats change. It's not like a normal weapon's Attack Rating, where it shows up as X +Y, the Magic Adjust shows up as a single number that changes based on the stat it scales with. Basically, the inherent Magic Adjust and the Bonus Magic Adjust are shown together as one number, so different catalysts have different level ranges at which they're best. Here are the best catalysts by level (based purely on magic adjust, there are some other factors, like availability and dark damage boost). So I notice that Lemon usually used the Prepare to Die Edition when he needs to modify his starting equipment. You can do that in the Remaster too, using DSR Gadget. You can't modify your stats or level, but you can give yourself items. That's how I do weird themed runs, myself.
I just wanted to say that you finally got me to purchase Dark Souls. Over the last month, I have binged your entire catalog of the Souls games, and as an early birthday gift to myself, I got the first Dark Souls game, and am going through my first run, technically second.
Hey thanks for the shoutout! I typed this whole thing up before I even saw you did that! Math you say? Oh do I love me some Dark Souls Math! The Damage formula is a little interesting - the way it is calculated is based on the attack rating of your attack compared to the defense stat of the enemy in question. Here are the thresholds: Attack / Defense > 8, Damage = 0.9 x Attack Attack / Defense between 8 and 2.5, Damage = ((-0.8 / 121) x (Attack / Defense - 8)^2) + 0.9) x Attack Attack / Defense between 2.5 and 1, Damage = ((-0.4 / 3) x (Attack / Defense - 2.5)^2) + 0.7) x Attack Attack / Defense between 1 and 1/8, Damage = ((19.2 / 49) x (Attack / Defense - 1/8)^2) + 0.1) x Attack Attack / Defense < 1/8, Damage = 0.1 x Attack For the Taurus Demon fight, with a Spell Buff of 100 and Fire Surge actually does 0.6 * Spell Buff per tick (not 0.38), you attack would be 60. Next, Taurus Demon has a Fire Defense of 88, but is located in an area where enemies defense is multiplied by 1.27, giving him an actual fire defense of 111.76. These are area defense modifiers, and are used to progressively increase enemies attack and defenses as you move throughout the game (this means that a blue crystal golem in the Archives is much stronger than one in Darkroot, for example). Taking 60 attack and 111.76 defense, we get 0.536, which is in that 4th threshold. So running the numbers, the damage comes out to 9.988 per tick. There is an interesting quirk in how Dark Souls handles damage number on screens between bosses (with the on-screen healthbar and regular enemies). For bosses, the game will round up in display (so 10 versus the Taurus Demon), but a regular enemy it would only show up as 9. This doesn't really affect anything, but it is interesting to note. It is generally only noticeable on the 4 Kings fight - next time you fight one, take a look at the damage you are doing to each wraith versus the health bar at the bottom - it may be different by 1 point!
As an added side-note; attack multipliers (such as the RTSR) affect the formula before damage is calculated, and damage multipliers (Power Within) affect it after damage is calculated. If you were to take the Taurus Demon and add on the RTSR, your attack would jump to 25.3 per hit, more than 2.5x your damage. Attack mults are super strong at lower attack ratings.

Technically you CAN get Fire Surge from the beginning. There's a glitch involving parry that can take you to Sen's Fortress without ringing any bell and also another glitch to makes Iron Golem send you to Anor Londo without killing him. After you get there you just need to get into the painting (don't forget the doll) and loot the spell. Biggest problem is: you can't rest at any bonfire from the moment you get into Sen's, otherwise you'll softlock yourself or you'll need to defeat O&S for the teleport... At least you get checkpoints on the way since once in Anor Londo you'll repawn at the start of the stage if you die and the same goes after you enter the painting. After you get the spell just use a Homeward Bone and go back to the last bonfire you sit at (not sure if you need to leave the painting before using it). No need to kill any boss on the way either except the Asylum Demon (and there's also a glitch to leave the Asylum without killing it), just make your way to Sen's gate through New Londo > Valley of The Drakes > Darkroot Basin > gate I'm not sure if those glitches work on the Remastered version tho
I am 100% sure the Sen's Fortress entrance works because I've done it on remastered and from what I've seen on Google the other 2 should work as well as long as he is willing to damage but not technically kill some enemies on the way there with something other than fire surge.
@@stewartumberger3661 nice to know they still work on remastered, but what about having to damage enemies? I can't recall any that you can't just olé around
@@PABGVRG You need to parry and riposte a knight for the Sen's Fortress skip which does like 10 damage if you use your fist, hit the iron golem on the correct frame to cancel the grab to teleport you (not sure the exact amount of damage or other requirements), and you need to kill the asylum demon and then quit before he completely dies to get the key early from the dying knight. All of those need you to damage an enemy, and since you won't have fire surge something else will be needed. So if he were alright doing that he could complete this challenge.

my only guess is the mod used doesn't just add fire surge to your starting inventory, but rather switches the fireball you started with with the fire surge in painted world, because otherwise, you could, in theory, grab the second fire surge in the painted world and attune both for double the casts, plus the dusk ring for 4x casts while hyper mode might not last the entire length of all 240 casts against artorias, the ones you do get, combined with having the remaining casts all be while you're in RTS status, might just be enough to kill artorias
You can get the pilgrim’s key without technically killing the asylum demon by bringing it to zero health, getting the key drop, then quitting out before the victory achieved message. When you spawn back in the asylum demon will still be alive but you can just walk around them, open the door and head to firelink, go back to the asylum, skip stray demon, grab the peculiar doll, head back to firelink The next obstacle would be sen’s fortress, the gates of which can be bypassed via the deathcam glitch. The golem can be skipped via a very precise glitch involving its grab attack, which will send you flying out of bounds and into anor Londo, then you can simply enter the painted world to get fire surge and play the game normally
I could swear, that I heard "pyromancy only run is usually one of the first suggestions whenever someone expresses interest in challenge running Dark Souls [...] it's limiting enough that you'll have to start thinking outside the box but also easy enough that you won't find yourself smashing your head against a brick wall", somewhere, before.

I understand if you eventually get tired of these types of vids but until then I'll watch every one😂 I have watched every single souls challenge video you have made
I came back to this one because, hey, Lemon + Fire = Good Times, and I had a thought. If Pyromancy is so dang strong in DS1 because upgrading the pyromancy flame is super easy and you don't need any stats for any of the spells... what about a pyromancy run where you never upgrade the flame? Would the stronger pyromancies give you enough damage potential to chew through the later bosses, or would you end up falling short?
I'd love to see this challenge in ds2 as well if you could mod the spell into the game like how you modded immolation into ds1. Not quite sure how well it'd work with how low the base damage of the spell is, but at least you'd have semi reliable cast refreshes with herbs
It reminded me of Dark Souls 2, Pyromancy doesn't scale with any Stat, and turning Hollow to use the Dark pyromancy flame gives more damage, Note: Be fully Hollow. Dark Souls 2 is my favorite, too. This is pleasant to see Backlogs.
"not that one, get out of here!" oh, that reminds me of a silly video i saw once, but can't seen to find again... it was called something like "worst spells in D&D, or "useless spells in D&D". the DM kept suggesting lousy spells to a level 1 wizard, who kept saying that he wanted Fireball. finally he snaps and says, "i REALLY want to be able to cast fireball, even if it's the ONLY spell i EVER learn." the DM says, ,"ok, you can cast only Fireball." later the DM says, "i wonder how he's doing?" EVERYTHING is on fire, and you hear the wizard say, "i cast FIreball AS A CANTRIP." "oh, SHIT!" the DM exclaims! in case you don't get it, Cantrips are "level 0" spells that, to put it simply, DON'T USE ANY MANA WHEN CAST!
I dont know if the xcom videos just didnt do well or what, but i was really hoping you would back to em, they were great. Keep up the good content king

Attack / Defense between 1 and 1/8, Damage = ((19.2 / 49) x (Attack / Defense - 1/8)^2) + 0.1) x Attack
Attack / Defense < 1/8, Damage = 0.1 x Attack
For the Taurus Demon fight, with a Spell Buff of 100 and Fire Surge actually does 0.6 * Spell Buff per tick (not 0.38), you attack would be 60.

“Lemon we love u” we say in unison :)
Lemon I want to thank you for using spirit tracks music everybody sleeps on that beautiful Zelda game and I wish people played it more
I came back to this one because, hey, Lemon + Fire = Good Times, and I had a thought.
The Dan Olsen shout out was the reference I needed tonight!
Wooo! Love these Dark Souls challenge vids! Just came across your channel not too long ago and these are my favorite. Huge Fromsoft fan!
12:30 When in doubt, Spy check.
Oh hey Lemon! I'm going to send a coffee in the mail instead of a membership 'cause my credit card declined. Sorry for the inconvenience @TheBacklogs
I'd love to see this challenge in ds2 as well if you could mod the spell into the game like how you modded immolation into ds1. Not quite sure how well it'd work with how low the base damage of the spell is, but at least you'd have semi reliable cast refreshes with herbs
It’s so funny to see the 3 main challenge runners being buddies
It reminded me of Dark Souls 2, Pyromancy doesn't scale with any Stat, and turning Hollow to use the Dark pyromancy flame gives more damage, Note: Be fully Hollow.
Dark Souls 2 is my favorite, too.
This is pleasant to see Backlogs.
Watching a man go mad as he looks on his reflection is really the perfect counterpart to driving yourself mad while trying to pyromance.
I love the fact that whenever a new Backlogs video comes out, other challenge runners are there to comment their opinion.
Lemon WE know you dident sneeze we are always watching, also can you put more food in the fridge
5:40 IS THAT THE SPIRIT TRACKS THEME!!!!! I love that game and feel like it’s over hated.
The ultimate four kings-killing weapon. Go get them Lemon. Make your students proud.
"not that one, get out of here!"
oh, that reminds me of a silly video i saw once, but can't seen to find again...
it was called something like "worst spells in D&D, or "useless spells in D&D".
the DM kept suggesting lousy spells to a level 1 wizard, who kept saying that he wanted Fireball.
finally he snaps and says, "i REALLY want to be able to cast fireball, even if it's the ONLY spell i EVER learn."
the DM says, ,"ok, you can cast only Fireball."
later the DM says, "i wonder how he's doing?"
EVERYTHING is on fire, and you hear the wizard say, "i cast FIreball AS A CANTRIP."
"oh, SHIT!" the DM exclaims!
in case you don't get it, Cantrips are "level 0" spells that, to put it simply, DON'T USE ANY MANA WHEN CAST!
Heck yah new backlogs video!
thank you youtube for reminding me i joined the second channel members on accident. does this mean i get two degrees?
Sure does!

I just love that wanted dead still gets love and sponsors you
taurus demon also has resistances, which is why we're nowhere near 3040 damage
👀 Lemon with one confirmed one shot kill. Eagerly awaiting the other 139!
Fire surge back on the 360 was so good it broke the 4th wall.
Causing the console to overheat and fps fall to single digits.
Love you backlogs. Love your vids
I am all about this video over here! Praise the Backlogs
Thanks for taking the time to make this video while doing the work on the one hit.
18:35 threw me off guard, i dont think ive heard you curse before lemon!
Havent started yet, already feel the insanity.
loving the Zelda: Spirit Tracks ost choice
I recognize that music at 6:40! Thats the overworld train music from Spirit Tracks! A man of taste i see
I dont know if the xcom videos just didnt do well or what, but i was really hoping you would back to em, they were great. Keep up the good content king
17:39 close, I’m in the ceiling
For what it's worth, I don't follow other dark souls runners, just you because I like your comedy and video production values. So while stuff like pyromancy only is boring or expected for most of your audience, it's completely new to me! So I appreciate explaining all the issues with pyromancy only before diving into this one. :)
Try Barons Castle and Press Continue. I like Gamers Weekend too.
You convinced me to get wanted dead and i loved it, i hope there will be a sequel where Hannah will get her son back
Nice to see the old flamethrower getting some use.
Good run as usual.
PS. You need to clean the crawspaces in your walls, there is an unhealthy amount of dust and more pressing, a disturbing amount of chewed in half rats in here...
Also please put some snacks in the vent, I'm starving.
As much as I appreciate the ds challenge run content, I need to congratulate your excellent choice of video essayist. Love me some Dan
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos in general. They are alway entertaining to watch and you seem like a really chill and cool person. Thanks for everything man 🎉
Thank you Lemon for giving us something wholesome and interesting to watch besides Mr Beast and Olympic's controversy.
Love,
Luke
You got a WANTED DEAD SPONSORSHIP??????
Absolutely rad
I love the DS1 and DS3 more than all other challenge runs
Gonna need a firesurge attachment for my Lemon Plush now
Love you lemon. I buy the whole trilogy again just because of you :( I miss the sun
Lemon taking the easy way, even no Manus attempts due to Artorias skip. Then again, we finally got one-shot challenge results, so I'm not mad.
It's most relatable to play a Folding Ideas video in the background.
So you know, thank you for making this videos. I use then to sleep to your great humor and pasive-agresive comments. Greetings from Spain without the S 🤟
Missed chance to call your undead for thisrunn Hans. As in
"Hans, get ze flammenwerfer!"
I don’t know if you will see this lemon but I wanted to say thank you for making the best content I’ve ever seen on this platform and thank you for making my day just that bit better I truly love this channel ❤❤
The more of these videos I watch, the more my need is to buy DS1 again
Dark souls!!!! Love these vids
I always have fun trying to catch which song from chrono trigger OST you are going to use this time around! Keep up the good work Lemon!
Great video!
Artorias is a gatekeeper for these type of challenges.
I started a Soul Arrow only run a while ago. Now i'm stuck at Four Kings and Artorias.
Wouldn't recommend doing that. Late game might force you to grind a lot.
Artiorias is the warm up, im excited to see someone do manus firesurge
It's most relatable to play a Folding Ideas video in the background.
I'm surprised that 110 Industries sponsored this video, when the game's been out for a year already. And Lemon even did a challenge run on it!
Proof that Lemon will do ANYTHING for content
Okay so I'm staring at the Gwyn part of the video and nothing about how the fight actually went has been gotten to yet but my prediction is: he goes down like a weenie. y'know, being fire-weak undead and all.
