Hi Danny! I always wondered how you got your favorite cattleya and how it got its name! I wish I could find Princess Jacky here in the U.S. I am originally from the Czech Republic but came to the U.S. in 1994. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge about orchids. I started watching your videos after purchasing my first orchid in 2019 and 4 years later I have 70 orchids - thanks to you and your videos. (I also have a huge garden with 16 fruit trees, 60 fruit bushes, 4 garden beds full of veggies and lots and lots of roses and perennial flowers and an herb garden). Cattleyas are my favorite orchids. I learned so much from you. I joined the Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City and won the Orchidist of the year 2023! Please continue making your wonderful videos! I look forward to them every week! Love Kat!
"you can't see the roots in the store without the clear plastic pot" Hell yes I can! I pull those plants right out of their pots and have a good look ahahaha!! I haven't gotten into trouble yet - we'll see haha!! PS in the US, I see around half the orchids in clear plastic pots. The ones in Trader Joe's are almost always in clear plastic pots, and at Fred Meyer and Walmart it seems to be around 50-50 clear pots to non-clear pots.
***** hahahahaha you resemble my friend, she is fearless, I am too shy to do something like that but it's a healthy way of picking orchids :P oh it would be great if everyone started to switch to clear pots, life would be so much easier :))
I know this is a very old post, but for what it's worth, this looks like a C. intermedia alba x C. walkeriana alba (look up "walkerinter" on blue nanta, alba variety). The nose definitely looks like walkeriana. The petals look like they have some intermedia. Walkeriana will give you the citrusy notes. But, the Princess Jackie name is just as good, and even more special!
Late suggestion, but: Canina. The roses your grandmother made jellies and syrup from, which are very common in Europe are most likely Rosa Canina, commonly called the Dog Rose. Their rosehips are known for producing the most delicious syrups and jellies!
+Marcella Miller oh that is not the one, but I did see this one too in gardens :D roses can be so aromatic I love them :D hope I'll get a few for my terrace ;)
Keep adding these beautiful and informative videos! I've recently just included a 'sick' cattleya in my collection. I'm hoping for the best. What is the best medium and pot for a cattleya in this form? Thank you
i think i have the same white cattleya. it looks just like yours, but it never flowered for me. i bought it from the secret garden flower shop here in bucharest. and that shape of the bulbs and the shape of the leafs are similar. and i bought it half price because it had no flowers.
Oh, Ms Danny, you're crystal is working overtime! I'm going to an orchid exposition tomorrow and since my catleya orchids are only babies, I am going to buy a blooming size. So, this was timed perfectly! Your new addition is just lovely! I think someone mentioned Snow Angel. I like Snow Angel. Thanks, Danny!!
Susana1024 good luck in finding a great Catt :D here is a tip, sometimes fragrant Catts might not smell without proper light in stores or orchid shows, but if they have a weird, sort of sweet, waxy smell, they might be very fragrant in daylight and with good conditions ;)
is your dove an african ringneck? or well the domesticated version? i breed them and they have the most amazing sounds. we had a baby almost die and took him in about same time he got eyes. he had fallen out of the nest and was cold so i thought he was dead. but after holding him in my hand for a few minutes he "came back to life" we named him Noodle and he is now one of my best dads in my intire flock. when his mate is on the eggs he'll be in the nest bowl next to her. and he was a real snugglemonster when we had him inside as a young.
OMG that was too funny when Jackie laughed at buying sick orchids lolol I replayed that part about 4 times. My suggestion for a name is Jackie Alba or Jackie Superstar because she just made my morning !!!
Hi Danny,I'm glad that you like it...May I make a request please..I showed my sister your video you made with Jackie, she loves that wanted to see Jackie once again, could you please upload another video of Jackie please if you have some time!! Love, Puja
That's a real beauty; almost all pure white (which I do not have)... and, if it was my baby, I would name it "Catt-ALBA-ley-a" for sure. Enjoy it to the fullest.. :)
I purchased a cattleya and it had two sheaths which didn't exhibit a bud in it but I assumed it would flower. Within less than one week one sheath had gotten brown and yellow. The orchid is in a good location and lots of ventilation. Could this be a sick orchid or normal?
Wrinkles vs. Ridges question: I have a denphal that started plump but when I brought him home he developed the ridges. I think that I watered him enough (although I live in mortal terror of giving him root rot because he is my favourite). Normal? Should I up my watering? Provide more nutrients? Leave him alone?
somethinguncreative well den phals can develop ridges as well, depends how horrible they look like :) can you see the roots? only water when the media is dry in any case and it should be ok, if you never repotted him do repot him now and give him a fresh start, also you can check if the roots are ok.
Oh, yeah! :3 I actually subscribed to your channel before I got him so I did the basic root check/cleanse/repot in clear plastic pot thing when I brought him home-a process that seems to work well for me. His roots are good though and it looks like the rapidly maturing offshoot is producing roots of it's own. I counted 8 little nubbinz & I think he's got a flower spike. On him only the oldest cane as the most severe ridges. But I was still curious bc I didn't know if he was /suppooosed/ to do that. :)
oh hey, i just purchased this orchid! it was funny because I asked the shop assistant that when it is going to be discounted, and she was like I'll give it to you for 6 euros, she was reaaly really nice (I'm thinking of giving her a little thank you gift or something :D)... i was out of my mind, I'm soooo happy for it, I can't wait for it to release it's frangrance! I think a name like Snow Cream, or Snow Queen or something like that would be nice for her :)
Zane Leroux woaaaaaw 6 euros?? I got it for more than 10 hahaha good job :D yes give her a little present she deserves it :D it smells mostly in the morning, it just fills up my balcony hehe :P
MissOrchidGirl pardon my french, but holy fucking shit it smells amazing!!! the first thing in the morning was to smell it, it blew me away, and yes it smells exactly like you described, and the rose you were talking about is the peony i think, theres one in our garden and the aftertaste is like the same, im soooo happy about this cattleya
Hi, if you mean the sheath around the pseudobulbs then it's ok, when they dry it is easy to remove them and actually advisable, as they can be a good hiding place for pests :)
i just bought a rhyncattleanthe orchid and when i repot it half of the roots were dead :( it have still a little bit of roots but they looked really fragile... what can i do to stimulate roots growing on my orchid?? the foliage looked a bit yellow at some points but it looked healthy enough to me to buy it... some of the pseudobulbs are really plump but some haves wrinkles too :( will I get a rough time with it and what can I do to make it healty again??
Hey Dani. I recently bought a C. dolosa var alba 'Gorgeous' and can't help wonder about the similarities between your white cattleya and it. Have you identified it yet? If not, have you considered c. dolosa as a possibility?
+Trac McNguyen I haven;t identified it yet, there are a few species that really resemble it, but like no one describes anything about the scent I cannot know. This is the problem with internet, not enough description :)
+William An hello, well it could be but it could also be harisoniae alba :)) they just look so similar it's hard to tell and no one wants to describe the scent to see if it's like mine :( so I cannot know what it truly is.
hey Dani! today I visited for the first time an orchid nursery quite near our home and I purchased a cattleya for the first time (I am happy it seems i chose right even if i hadn't seen your video yet hehe), it's the hawaiian splash lea (YEIIIII FINALLYYYY)!!! I also have another catt a friend gave me but it is on rescue still :) could you please write a contact email, I have taken some fotos for you and also I could give you the details of the nursery as they do have an online store and ship worldwide and their prices are pretty decent :) lots of love, filakia
Let's call her Seraphine :) Hopefully you will post about phalaenopsis soon. I love all orchids but those (phale) are so everywhere and i love them so much :)
I think you should name it Turkey after Mouselily's Cockatoo :) I would like to add to your suggestions to buy from a reputable dealer and to ask around if the dealer you are interested in purchasing from has been used by your friends. Very nice video (as always), Dani. I hope all is well with you.
Wade's Orchids yes that is why I made the video on where to buy orchids, so that people can suggest sources to buy from, I also made a list with territories :) when it comes to NoIDs I am always heart torn because I know I cannot present the orchid and recommend it for my viewers.. but it just smells so good, and some of my viewers do have this particular store in their countries and many times they found the orchids I got because I told them about the store. So it's the best I can do until vendors will start to understand that names are important. I will actually email Floraself, present myself and what I do and why it is important for me and for orchid lovers to have an ID. Maybe they have the ID's somewhere :P
Hi Dani. I just bought a cattleya and followed most of your advices in the video in choosing the plant to buy, but there are several things in the cattleya I bought that concerns me. I bought this plant for 600 pesos which is about 11 or 12 euros. Here is a photo of the plant: i67.tinypic.com/2mqorc0.jpg This plant is quite bushy and although not all of them can be seen in the photo since its a bit dark, all in all it has 27 pseudobulbs and 8 new growths that are still tiny sprouts. One of the pseudobulbs has completely dried up and four has their leaves bent on the base which I guess have been caused by mishandling. Three of the pseudobulbs with bent leaves are already shriveled with no signs of them ever bearing flowers. The bent leaves seemed to have prevented anything from growing out. In the photo you can see one of the shriveled pseudobulbs just below the flower. I checked if the last one can still bear a flower since it is still plump and already matured and inside the bent leaf is a growing bud. So what I did was cut the leaf to make sure the bud can grow. The bent area is already turning black so I guess I did the right thing. Also, should I divide the plant? Although the pot still has quite ample space in it I dont think it can handle the orchid well once the new growths mature. I really like the bushy look on this cattleya so I'm having a hard time deciding whether to divide it or not.
Hi, that is a very pretty Cattleya :D ok the dried pseudobulb can be cut away, if you cannot cut the rhizome safely, you can cut the only the psb (above the rhizome). The bent leaves can be left alone if they don't show signs that they are completely severed from the psb, but if the buds didn't have room to grow it's ok, the orchid won't miss a leaf. About dividing, well it really is up to you :) there's nothing wrong with leaving it as it is if you like the bushy aspect :) you can try to use a wider pot that is not as tall, this way you will have less water held by the pot, if that was the concern. The new growths will produce the new root system of the orchid and will feed all the connected psb if they are viable :)
+MissOrchidGirl Thanks Dani. I think I'll stick with the bushy effect because I just recently watched a video in Gardening at Douentza about her monster cattleya before she divided it and it was so pretty although it ate her pot :p
Thanks for the buying tip. Now I know what to look for the next time I buy Cattleya orchid. So far the ones I bought have no problems. I saw a Masd Lollipop the other day at my local grocery store and thought it was some kind of candy, so I passed it up. Then I checked out Brads Greenhouse video on it and perhaps I should pick it up soon before it disappears. What do you know about this particular orchid? Thanks!
draco003 Masdevallias are not necessarily my favorites and also they are not the most suited orchids for my environment. They tend to be cool growing and humidity lovers, but this doesn't mean it's not for other people either, if you like it and think you can provide what it needs, why not? :)
Very informative as always, And another G~O~R~G~E~O~U~S orchid, What about White Angel dream. The flower kind of reminds me of a snow angel, Whatever you call her she's a beauty. :-D
stake a flower spike becuase i tried to find vidoes but cant seem to find one is there anyway that you can make a videos about staking the spike for the flower?
hai tran hmmm ok I will try but it's pretty easy, it's not like Phalaenopsis, when the spike grows you can start to pin it with a tie to a stake, not a clip though. This will train it to grow upwards. However I think it's best to start training the pseudobulb to grow straight first, this will make things easier ua-cam.com/video/pCOW1AIGEgo/v-deo.html
Danny, sorry for the constant questioning, but should I be concerned about this? This is an Iwanagara apple blossom I was given a few days ago and I noticed this damage a few days back. Here's a pic: drive.google.com/file/d/0B3538QX73OfiQXE4T1MwVDZ0bXM/view?usp=drivesdk
Hi, not sure if this is something to worry about, it might be some mechanical damage or sun burn, but the important thing is that it doesn't spread. So keep an eye on it, if it stays put than all is ok :)

I have a new orchid I don’t know it’s
That's exactly what I do and if anyone looks at me I just stare at them sideways until they walk away
That orchid really is exquisite! It reminds me of Jacky a little bit, because of the pristine white color.
+Carol Habicht indeed, I named her Princess Jacky in lack of an ID :)
I have one just like that species. Cattleya dolosa var alba (gorgeous white)
I know this is a very old post, but for what it's worth, this looks like a C. intermedia alba x C. walkeriana alba (look up "walkerinter" on blue nanta, alba variety). Oh my God. I have the same orchid. It's a no id too. I didn't smell it ever. It really does smell very very good. #shocked

MissOrchidGirl Thank you, Danny! I probably would bypass the orchid if that were the case. You're a peach, Danny! Thank you again.
the white one might be Cattleya intermedia var. alba or Cattleya loddigesii var. alba
is your dove an african ringneck? or well the domesticated version? i breed them and they have the most amazing sounds. we had a baby almost die and took him in about same time he got eyes. he had fallen out of the nest and was cold so i thought he was dead. but after holding him in my hand for a few minutes he "came back to life" we named him Noodle and he is now one of my best dads in my intire flock. when his mate is on the eggs he'll be in the nest bowl next to her. and he was a real snugglemonster when we had him inside as a young.

Good stuff. Love the new cattleya!
Gardening at Douentza Thanks Rachel :D
Beautiful Cattleya! My fav!
I think it might be Cattleya Margaret Stewart, I have one that is similar and it smells a similar way too
How would you suggest helping one that is dehydrated?
I just bought a cattleya with wrinke leaves like that. Should I repot now? Or get it back to normal first?
What about 'Princess Jackie'....I can hear she giggles behind! :D
teetir1981 ooooh I love the name :D good suggestion!
Hi Danny,I'm glad that you like it...May I make a request please..I showed my sister your video you made with Jackie, she loves that wanted to see Jackie once again, could you please upload another video of Jackie please if you have some time!!
Love,
Puja
teetir1981 I will try to make some vids with Jacky, she is camera shy though, doesn't act natural when I film her :P
This one reminds me of Cattleya intermedia var. alba, it might be a possible ID.
Heaven scent ....play on words for heaven sent.... 😊 very beautiful
1:15 poor orchid😂😂😂 ( in the left ( the small one ) )
That's a real beauty; almost all pure white (which I do not have)... and, if it was my baby, I would name it "Catt-ALBA-ley-a" for sure. Enjoy it to the fullest.. :)
John Benedict ORCHIDS haha nice combination of words :D yes she is so white my camera went a little crazy with exposure on the flower :))
It is beautiful tough you don't know what it is called will search for it. Thanks for sharing, love your videos. Oh who won the contest?
I purchased a cattleya and it had two sheaths which didn't exhibit a bud in it but I assumed it would flower. Within less than one week one sheath had gotten brown and yellow. The orchid is in a good location and lots of ventilation. Could this be a sick orchid or normal?
I`ll go for "Bulka", which means "Bride" in Bulgarian. :)
Cveti Ivanova yay I learned a new word :D
I’m from Ukraine originally, I know exactly what rose jam you are talking about. It’s absolutely delicious. Love your Cattleya. How is it doing today?
LOL, your Dove is so funny. It sounded just like she was laughing. :p
Trac McNguyen haha she is called a laughing dove, as a species :P
How much was this white cattleya?
So beautiful! Congrats on your new cattlya. I like the idea of a name including your dove as well. What about 'Jackie's Snowflake' or 'Snowy Dove'?
Kristin Disney Thanks for the suggestion :D I think I will go with something related to Jacky or doves :D
This might be too late but i think "Casablanca" would be nice!
How do I correct dehydration in orchids without over watering, please?
Wrinkles vs. Ridges question: I have a denphal that started plump but when I brought him home he developed the ridges. I think that I watered him enough (although I live in mortal terror of giving him root rot because he is my favourite). Normal? Should I up my watering? Provide more nutrients? Leave him alone?
somethinguncreative well den phals can develop ridges as well, depends how horrible they look like :) can you see the roots? only water when the media is dry in any case and it should be ok, if you never repotted him do repot him now and give him a fresh start, also you can check if the roots are ok.

somethinguncreative I say he is just fine, my Den Phal developed ridges after blooming as well but he is still plump ;)
oh hey, i just purchased this orchid! it was funny because I asked the shop assistant that when it is going to be discounted, and she was like I'll give it to you for 6 euros, she was reaaly really nice (I'm thinking of giving her a little thank you gift or something :D)... i was out of my mind, I'm soooo happy for it, I can't wait for it to release it's frangrance!
Zane Leroux lol I know right?? glad you found it and got it for yourself :D
Hi! I am new to cattleya orchids and am loving them. If some of the papery sheaths come off will this harm the orchid? Any advice is appreciated!
Hi, if you mean the sheath around the pseudobulbs then it's ok, when they dry it is easy to remove them and actually advisable, as they can be a good hiding place for pests :)
+MissOrchidGirl Yes the sheath around the pseudobulbs 😊 Thank you!! I was worried that I harmed it.
no harm at all if the sheath is dry and comes off easy :)
i just bought a rhyncattleanthe orchid and when i repot it half of the roots were dead :( it have still a little bit of roots but they looked really fragile... what can i do to stimulate roots growing on my orchid?? the foliage looked a bit yellow at some points but it looked healthy enough to me to buy it... some of the pseudobulbs are really plump but some haves wrinkles too :( will I get a rough time with it and what can I do to make it healty again??
Where is a reliable online store to buy cattleya orchid plant?
Hi, stores depend on the region, they usually don't send to other continents. So google orchid nurseries in your area :)
To me, the white orchid is a some sort of cattleyas loddigessii Alba form
+William An hello, well it could be but it could also be harisoniae alba :)) they just look so similar it's hard to tell and no one wants to describe the scent to see if it's like mine :( so I cannot know what it truly is.
hey Dani! today I visited for the first time an orchid nursery quite near our home and I purchased a cattleya for the first time (I am happy it seems i chose right even if i hadn't seen your video yet hehe), it's the hawaiian splash lea (YEIIIII FINALLYYYY)!!! I also have another catt a friend gave me but it is on rescue still :) could you please write a contact email, I have taken some fotos for you and also I could give you the details of the nursery as they do have an online store and ship worldwide and their prices are pretty decent :) lots of love, filakia
it looks like the cattleya sea breeze aka blue ribbon
Let's call her Seraphine :) Hopefully you will post about phalaenopsis soon. I love all orchids but those (phale) are so everywhere and i love them so much :)
Maria R hahaha you caught me, I don't have many Phals :P but I do have species Phals :D
I think you should name it Turkey after Mouselily's Cockatoo :) I would like to add to your suggestions to buy from a reputable dealer and to ask around if the dealer you are interested in purchasing from has been used by your friends. Very nice video (as always), Dani. I hope all is well with you.

Hi Danni, what a beautiful flower. Did you get a name for your flower? how about "White Princess"
Thank you, yep we named her Princess Jacky from my white dove Jacky :P
Susan Alexander w
Hmm, it reminds me of snow and cream since you mentioned the scent is kind of creamy. How about "Cream of Snow" or "Snow Cream." :)
***** snow cream that is interesting :D
I think that orchid is a Cattleya Intermédia, species from here in Brazil
Ian Castro Barcellos It does, but not exactly, maybe it's a hybrid of that
What about : Snow White sau Alba ca zapada ??
+Alex Donici CAD-CAM Dental Restorations I named her Princess jacky after my dove :P
What a nice Cattleya orchid, Danny!
I would name it Mountain Snow Angel. :D
Devin Rennekamp Thanks Devin that's a great suggestion :D
I know this video is super old but a good name for the nameless orchid could be Snow Lace. :-)
Hi Dani. I just bought a cattleya and followed most of your advices in the video in choosing the plant to buy, but there are several things in the cattleya I bought that concerns me. Nina Dillard I was thinking about that too :P
How about Angel's Breathe for the name
+Devin M Hi, it sounds great but she already has a name now :P it's princess jacky
+MissOrchidGirl yeah sorry about that. I didn't realize it was an old video until after I commented 😅
+Devin M no worries :) she is in bloom now btw ;)

Hi danny( DANI) is there a way if you can make a video on how to stake a cattleya flower?
hai tran Hi, do you mean stake the orchid so it grows straight or stake the flower spike?
stake a flower spike becuase i tried to find vidoes but cant seem to find one is there anyway that you can make a videos about staking the spike for the flower?
hai tran hmmm ok I will try but it's pretty easy, it's not like Phalaenopsis, when the spike grows you can start to pin it with a tie to a stake, not a clip though. This will train it to grow upwards. However I think it's best to start training the pseudobulb to grow straight first, this will make things easier ua-cam.com/video/pCOW1AIGEgo/v-deo.html
okay thank ...but yea i have a lot of pseudobulb that aren't growing upward ill just try to make them grow upward first ... thanks :)
I would name it Jacky, like your dove. Pure and white. :)
Na iskos I think I will go with something related to Jacky :D
Danny, sorry for the constant questioning, but should I be concerned about this? This is an Iwanagara apple blossom I was given a few days ago and I noticed this damage a few days back. Here's a pic: drive.google.com/file/d/0B3538QX73OfiQXE4T1MwVDZ0bXM/view?usp=drivesdk
Hi, not sure if this is something to worry about, it might be some mechanical damage or sun burn, but the important thing is that it doesn't spread. So keep an eye on it, if it stays put than all is ok :)
MissOrchidGirl Thanks Danny. I will monitor this orchid and watch out for that damage.
It is gorgeous! Thanks for making this video :D I would name it 'White Dove' or 'Jacky' ;)
