Saving a rotting Orchid - Cattleya with transport damage

  • We have an update here • Orchid Updates - Drago...
Today we take care of my Cattleya orchid which was packed very wet, so many of the leaves and structures were very affected!
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
First we need to repot this orchid, offer it fresh medium and a brand new pot, since the old moss were degraded and the pot was unusable. I prefer self watering pots for these orchids anyway, more details here • DIY self watering pots...
After the roots are cleaned, I remove all the affected leaves and new growths. I then spray the entire orchid with hydrogen peroxide 3%, which will disinfect my entire orchid.
Moss can be easily removed with tweezers, learn more here • How to remove sphagnum...
I am also trying out Dragon's Blood, I will let you know if it does at least as good of a job as cinnamon :)

Thanks so much for your immediate response. I contacted the seller, and he stated that the pseudobulb with the affected leaves was most likely suffering from frostbite. He stated to remove the pseudobulb and treat the incision with cinnamon. I did. I think the Cattleya will be fine. Best wishes.

Hey! A few months ago I bought 3 bag baby cattleyas from Lowes and they did the same thing like in this vlog. I thought they were dying, leaves turned dark, some fell off, so I threw them away. I thought they could not live without their leaves. A week too late. But, now I know how to handle the situation if it occurs again. Thanks so much for the info.

Hi Danni, Thak you for your tutorial on various aspects of Orchid plants. I've purchased one large vanda with bloom. The plant was in much stress in transportation. After a few days I observe that the roots are very soft, some are broken and rotting at the middle portion. May I expect your advice.

Hi Orchid Girl. Love your channel. New to this one but since I now have a cattleya, was interested in making sure I did things right by it. How did the Dragon's blood work? Just curious. And could you also send me a picture of the current stage of this orchid? I know it's been four years, but PLEASE???

I know you kept it for educational purposes but wow that is so unacceptable. Nurseries should know "transport 101" DRY DRY DRY. I hope you give them a piece of your mind, again. That should never happen again to anyone. I bet though it will produce beautiful flowers just to thank you😊.

Just watched the video and I am amazed that it didn't work for you. I've never experienced a failure with this product. The disease of the plant must have been a very aggressive one. It will definitely stop all kinds of rot in its tracks. Thanks for the reply and take care.

Hi Orchid girl. I had a cattleya with the same problem as yours I did all your recommendations. But I have a very important question. When I have to water the orchid after the repotting? The substrato is wet. already. My poor plant was in really bad shape. I hope for the best. Thank you very much for your amazing videos. Zema. Greetings from Southern Cali. :)

I need your help. I just received a Cattleya Pot. Netrasiri Starbright with all healthy green leaves and pseudobulbs, except one purple one. Is the purple one suffering for frostbite or an infection? Should I remove it? This one purple pseudobulb with its purple leaves looks healthy, except for the color--the color is not black, but purely purple.

Hi Danny/Dani! I recently purchased my first Cattleya last weekend. The seller mentioned they like to dry out. How does the self watering work with the Leca for this plant? I really would love to do a self watering container, but I might not have a warm enough climate for it to be productive.

MissOrchidGirl I moved one of my phals to leca and do need to water more often but I personally like the set up so far. If the watering becomes too much, would it be ok to put it in a diy self watering pot like you did here? I am in a cold climate with a toasty apartment but do have a humidifier running. Thanks and good luck to all!

Rosemarie Farrugia Doublet if you buy 3% hydrogen peroxide then no it’s not diluted. If you buy 6% then yes. It would need to be half water and half of the 6% peroxide.
