The 2021 Toyota Corolla brings minor changes to the lineup, which is no bad thing since it's one of the best-selling affordable small cars around. Even better: You can get some versions with a manual transmission! But is the fully-loaded, CVT-only XSE model as sporty and fun as Toyota would have you believe? @Richard Favreau They test a mile above sea level, that handicaps a naturaly aspirated engine while a turbo-/supercharged engine won't suffer as much.
      I've never driven a car with CVT that i would call fun or engaging, but with age one do start to appreciate comfort, smoothness and mpg a lot more, that's where CVT shines.

    I had a Corolla SE as a loaner for a day and absolutely fell in love with it. Toyota really upped their game. These new Corollas are a level above the previous generation. It's not a sports car, but it certainly didn't feel that slow to me. I found it fun and sporty to give. This XSE version will be my next car for sure! And, as a naturally aspirated Toyota, it'll last forever.

      @Richard Favreau oh it's extremely easy to drive... It's a Corolla afterall. It's fun to drive in a sense because the CVT is really responsive to throttle input, aside from 1st launches. The suspension is forgiving and soft riding, but drives like a car should, not lofty like an SUV. I can't comment on its true reliability because the CVT and 2.0 engine are new designs, but given Toyota's past records, I would believe it to be reliable.

      Lol I really hope these are troll comments, the fact that it has a CVT is the lowest selling point of the car. A simulated launch gear adds little to no value.
      Especially not for that measly sub 160 wheel hp with a 13 sec 0-60 sorry Corolla lovers
      This car is pathetic, spend your money on a real car 🤷‍♂️ I mean look at the Honda Civic, quite a bit larger better to drive quite a bit quicker better transmission choices and the Mazda is the same and now with an even quicker version on its way into production, and the vastly superior interior of Mazda products. Don’t buy this dated toyota

    • @Meqanicull
      @Meqanicull 3 роки тому +1

      @Richard Favreau I'm promoting a civic that I believe to have a superior CVT with far better fuel economy to that of the Corolla and a manual transmission offering unlike that of the corolla, so who are you trying to fool?
      If you knew anything about CVT's you would know it one continuous gear and it simulates gears to the driver to control engine speeds and rpm's, as far as the launch gear, it simulates the feeling of a first gear in a normal transmission and it essentially shifts the CVT to be controlled by a normal gear and it is built to increase off the line efficiency by reducing the load of the engine and it automatically switches back to the CVT belt when up to speed. It was not built for any intentions of increased performance, It feels faster because it is controlling the load the engine and speed of the RPMs by giving it a first gear. Nothing that special, nothing that is all that desirable compared to a standard CVT.
      If you even remotely read or understood my comment you would have seen that I very clearly stated that the Mazda has a new engine option offering far more power than the corolla, I am referring to the 2.5T that has already been confirmed by mazda and multiple journalists have talked about it. The reality is this is a 2020 corolla that has done nothing to innovate aside from adding a first gear for better efficiency. How about you educate yourself before making an ass out of yourself my friend, oh and since I'm sure you wont take the time to look up the new Mazda 3 here are the power numbers(227hp, 310lb/ft) these walk all over the measly 169bhp, which in reality puts 140 to the wheels if that. I'm sure you also didn't know that being how little you know about cars as it is, and since you will try to argue the civic (180hp) which is underrated from the factory as all honda motors are. I could easily tell you several things more about what makes the civic and mazda3 superior but since I'm sure you won't fully read this comment, just as you did with the last comment. I won't entertain this conversation any further, numbers, specs, features, and performance don't lie and the corolla is lacking on all fronts try and prove me wrong.

    • @Meqanicull
      @Meqanicull 3 роки тому

      @Richard Favreau You say that but not all specs are available in a manual transmission for the corolla, I don't believe I needed to specify that the corolla has a manual offering as it was clearly stated in the beginning of this video.
      I stated the civic was a superior option and elaborated to you on why that is, since you decided to mention the Civic's CVT option. To be even more clear I never once stated I like any CVT, I will bash any car with a CVT because in terms of performance it is an undesirable option. That does not mean I can't admit that some CVT's are superior than others.
      I was speaking specifically about the corolla because the corolla is behind the competition, In my last comment I gave you several reasons why. Yes the launch gear was a good addition for both improved acceleration and efficiency but not enough to make the corolla CVT a more desirable option than the competition. Regarding the mazda, you can go ahead and say it competes directly with the civic type R in terms of price but it does not as msrp starts at 29k, and if I am not mistaken the exact corolla in this video as tested was priced at 30k. You tell me which car you would spend your 30k on? and if we want to compare msrp's the corolla XSE starts at 25k and type R starts at 36k with prices exceeding 46k. The mazda 3 is not built as a sports sedan as you claim and you would know that also if you read anything journalists have said or even mazda themselves have said. It is a mainstream compact sedan with a higher performance trim, just as the corolla XSE is and the Civic Sport is. It offers far better performace, creature comforts and awd for around the same price as a fully loaded XSE you tell me where your 30k is going? That sounds like competition to me, power numbers may be higher but people care about price and how much they get for there money making this new mazda 3 2.5T a direct competitor to the XSE and Civic sport regardless, with how close in price they are. In order to get the 2.5T you have to go to the max trim which as I stated starts at 29k and that comes with a multitude of options as standard in the trim and has 1 option for tech package meaning the price of the 2.5T likely won't exceed 33k and that is not including incentives and dealer discounts which you are far more likely to get at Mazda than you are Toyota. To put into perspective Mazda's dealer discounts and incentives, my friend just purchase a brand new Mazda 6 in the signature trim(highest trim level with 2.5T) with all discounts and incentives OTD was just under 30k with a 0% interest rate. My point is he got a brand new sedan an entire class above the XSE for the same price as this tested XSE. Mazda does this with all of their models as a family member of mine got a signature trim CX-9 with the 2.5T for 36k OTD, if you take those 2 deals as any reference. I would expect to see OTD prices as low as 27-28k for the Mazda3 2.5T making it the best option in the segment which includes both the Corolla XSE and Civic sport based on price.

      Sales don't lie. Maybe you can ask all the people who buy a Corolla why they buy it. Most likely because they are reliable and roomy and many people just want a basic transportation from point A to B. Not to mention some of those hot hatches are only available in manual which many people cannot even drive. Most Corollas are also cheaper than those hot hatches if you look at the base models. Not everyone buy the fully loaded model.

I guess I look at getting more mileage out of a set of tires and generally speaking the less sidewall the less mileage. And also for that that amount of money there should be more standard stuff. Although I think that the car looks better than older generations. There are 2 Corollas in the family, the thing I find is for me how hard it is in getting in and out, especially getting out. It feels like you’re sitting on the ground. I don’t care for the CBT either, however overall, it still is a good reliable vehicle.

    I bought the 2020 Corolla earlier this year and I think it's a great value. I paid only $18.4k for the mid level trim ($21k after tax/fee). I mostly use it for long drives and get mid 40s MPG and have even hit as high as 50 MPG when driving long 55 MPH highway stretches (and mine is the non-hybrid). The built in voice commands are a little clunky, like almost every car, but once you plug in your phone you can just use Siri by hitting the voice command on the wheel and that works 10x better and you get the option of using Apple or Google Maps on the display. The Toyota safety technology package is also standard which was a huge selling point for me. The adaptive cruise control is a game changer for long drives and you also get blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, pedestrian/cyclist alert (auto braking), and a back--up camera. The value for your money is very high with this car.

      I hate to be "that person," but you should have gotten the manual. I also have a 2020 Corolla hatchback, and I bought it without even knowing how to drive a manual (dealership delivered it to my house at no extra cost after I wrote the check). I taught myself to drive it by watching stick shift instructional videos on UA-cam. It was incredibly easy to learn on this car. I'm a 35 year old woman, by the way, so if I can learn, then anyone can. :) This car feels like it has a lot of power. It takes off fast from a stop, and accelerates quick when merging onto the highway. I never test drove the CVT, but it sounds like the CVT neutered the power. Even if your dealership didn't have the manual on the lot, they can do a factory order it for you, in any color or trim level you want. You just have to be patient (I had a three month wait between when the car was ordered, and when it arrived). By the way, I've also come to love the tablet stuck on dash radio. I thought it looked ridiculous at first, but I'm finding that it is very convenient to have the radio controls higher up, closer to eye level.

And no regrets, it turned out to be just as fun as looks! Anyway, I got my first hamster on my tenth birthday, and except for a pause while I was in college, I've continuously had a pet hamster. They're just so cute and entertaining. Unfortunately, they only live a couple years. When one passes away, I get another. So, that's a lot of hamsters over the past 25 or so years.

    Cvt with manual mode is actually great because a lot of people cry when it stays at redline like it’s supposed to... so the paddles definitely make it more enjoyable and fun when driving it in a sporty fashion even my mom uses the OD off button and the L mode in her 2014 pathfinder she finds it nice when passing people and going up hill. I rented a 2020 Corolla driving to Florida from nj and the car basically drove the whole way with the adaptive cruise and lane keep assist... loved the car and found myself using the “B” mode in it to keep the RPMS higher also had a race with an 07 Silverado that was lifted and we were dead even but when the corolla got to redline he was getting beat... and that was the 1.8😂 think it’s silly that he wouldn’t give it a buy it because the doesn’t lose power by shifting like a geared trans

    We have three cars... A Hyundai Santa Fe (6 speed auto), a Honda Accord (6 speed manual), and a Honda Civic (CVT). In the Santa Fe I only use the manual mode when I drive down from the mountains into work (about 5 miles of 7% grade), the Civic doesn't have a manual mode so we use the L gear on the grade (Seriously the best engine braking I've ever had in a car... Down a 7% grade I need to press the gas to maintain freeway speed), and in the Accord... I use 4th gear on the grade but even then that transmission does absolutely nothing for engine braking.
    Other than driving down that grade, I leave the automatic cars in D and save the shifting for when I'm in the Accord.

Toyota saw the opportunity to hit the market extremely hard with a reliability campaign that has lasted all these years later. Today, Toyota is no more reliable than anything else. If you look closely you'll see that one is the actual exhaust tip and the other is closed off inside. It's like why make it non-functional? Seems if you're (Toyota) are going to make it look and develop a dual exhaust tip, make it functional. I have to 2020 se with the CVT. I get the rated 0 to 60 around 8 sec. Negatives are not enough storage, no android auto , cloth seats arent comfortable . Positive are better than rated MPG, over 40 city, can fit 4 adults pretty good, handling is good. Its a solid choice and 2021 now has android auto, the cvt is ok in about 90% of cases. Were ive seen its weakpoints is if u dont come to a near complete stop it wont takeoff in the Physical 1st gear leaving u dead for about 3-4 sec then ur moving. Also when you do takeoff in the physical 1st gear depending on wear it shifts to the cvt theres a jerk/harsh shift. So between 2000ish to 2600ish is were this occurs. Higher or lower then this your gold. That 1st gear shud be in all cvts it does make a difference. 👍🏽

      But Lexus is uglier in my opinion. Except that cool hatch they used to make. For 30k why not get a used Avalon?
