Any company that saves the manual gets my vote. I actually really like the XSE Manual Hatch too. Toyota deserves huge kudos for this car, especially for the iMT and new CVT. Most major automotive magazines could care less what Toyota does. They see every car they make as an “appliance”, and falsely so. I think this is easily among the best in class and would be my vote despite its minuscule size.
This is something that if you buy and do proper maintenance, it can easily last you 15 years without issues.
Me with my 22 year old Camry
Corolla lasts forever that's why I got it
CVTs suck! Keep the Manuals alive!!🤓
Good to see the 2019 Corolla Hatchback with the manual #savethemanuals
#savethemanuals
The corolla new cvt has already been recalled, lol.
#savethemanuals
@Nobby Barnes same man
I'm just about to learn manual this summer 2019.. but #savethemanuals lol
This would be great for a daily driver. I looked at Auto Trader and found plenty of these XSE manual hatches for just under 22K which is a pretty good bargain for a car you can probably drive 300k miles. Love that Toyota uses dual injection for enhanced reliability instead of the basic direct injection with all the carbon issues. Well done Toyota.
I was wondering about that! Glad to hear they still have that in these newer engines. Honda's been very disappointing with their new engines/quality and I'm worried Toyota will follow suit. Lucky, at least here, it hasn't. I heard they had to recall the CVT model already...
The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is one of the new cars I would get
Needs a normal exhaust
I'd does have a normal exhaust. If you're talking about the faux dual exhaust, you don't even notice it after owning it for a couple months. Unfortunately, it's a fad right now in the industry.
This is the EXACT trim that i want. Everything spec'd perfectly. I think you may have just sold me, Matt. Also, thanks for answering my instagram question about the infotainment!
Neat little hatchback, if I were in the market I'd strongly consider getting one with a manual.
I bought this car when I traded in my trusty 10 year old Matrix. Love it !!! I have always driven only manual (for over 40 years now) and I must say that this is the smoothest shifter I have ever driven. The Matrix felt like a truck in comparison ! To be honest, I could have done without the some of the computerized bells and whistles that come with the car (I really only use the "tablet" for music and while backing up and never bother with the intelligent shift option or the brake "hold" … but not an issue that there are what, for me, are superfluous "extras"). The Matrix, of course, was bigger and higher off the ground but this car is more of a pleasure to drive. If I had a complaint to make, it would only be that that audio input and power outlet (lighter) jacks are awkwardly placed and difficult to find in low light. The armrest is also too far back to get into easily. Minor details. All in all, I look forward to driving this car for the next 10 years :-)
Do you miss the handbrake?
The armrest can be extended forward.
@@soupyliciousNot on my SE (manual transmission).
@@rightlanehog3151 yes, I do miss it. I suppose I will get used to the brake and hold buttons with time though.
@@gabithemagyar Muscle memory will take a while to adapt. Whenever I get behind the wheel of an automatic my left foot searches for the non-existent clutch pedal.
Why oh why won’t Toyota make the big-time JBL audio system available for the manual trim? To me, it seems that manual drivers would want and pay for a booming audio system.
Definitely annoying, but I've looked online and you can get aftermarket speakers that are $100 a pair and replacement tweeters for $100 a pair. If you don't mind taking it to a shop, you could probably put a nicer sound system than the jbl in there for less money.
New subscriber from Montreal here Matt! Keep up the good work....you deserve more views!
The giant grill look is tired. But The Corrola manual hatch is a classic.
Something else to note is that this car is literally only one to two tenths of a second slower than the Mazda 3. So speed is quite adequate.
Nice review. I just picked up a 2021. Silver w/black metallic roof, XSE and a 6 speed manual. Your comments are accurate and spot on. “Slow (ish) thing fast. Traded a 2012 VW TDI SportWagen w/a DSG transmission w/80k miles. It is a great car, faster and the DSG is fabulous. It was just time. No more looking back. Love the Corolla Hatchback.
That silver with the black roof looks sharp on Toyota's build and price website. It looks like a darker silver than the typical lighter silver found on cars. Is it true that it's a lot darker silver or is it the website making it look this way ?
Mustang is heavy as a sledgehammer in comparison to the precision lightness of the Japanese clutches. Toyota has really stepped up their game!
Now that hyundai destroyed the looks of the Elantra Sport... the Corolla XSE Sedan with a manual is what i would buy.
Too bad the XSE sedan doesn't come in manual.
Why is America obsessed with SUV and Sedans? Meanwhile Japan and Europe is big on hot hatches.
@@Hboogie182 Largely due to the lower fuel costs, larger roads and parking spaces, and culture. China, Australia, and the Middle East are the same in that regard. It's more accurate to call those SUV as CUV or crossovers.
@@VoidNinja7 I live in Los Angeles. There's not many parking spaces here and it's hella crowded. But yet people still drive big SUV and big pickup trucks. I'm starting to think it's because most Americans are fat so that's why they need big cars.
@@Hboogie182 Larger cars tend to be safer and have much closer mpg with sedans now. I personally hate urban areas and prefer the suburban or countryside. Obesity could be one reason and another could that some like big cars for their economic-social status symbols to brag about. The main market for crossovers seems to be women.
I like the way you called your wife's friend a giant in such a graceful way
This is Matt's Review. Clicked Thumps up and started to watch! Thanks!!
Thank you!
Thought I'd chime in with my experience. I just went the other day to test drive a 6 speed 2020 SE sedan the other day. All in all I really like it, but a serious issue I had was the clutch. Uptake on it is VERY high in the travel, to the point where you think you're slipping the clutch everytime you shift. It's a little odd. Matt made the same comment here and I completely agree. It was definitely far higher than any car I've had. EVO X and e90 3 series, but even much higher than a manual, regular Ford Fiesta I had. It is a pretty serious turn off.
Seems just as entertaining when you're ringing out the 1st and 2nd gear as my 2.0L Civic Sedan. However, vtec kick in on 3rd for K20c2 engine and then you realize that it's a different beast. Performance on lower gear is probably similar cause Civic LX 6MT Sedan weighs 2770lb.
Toyota: doesn’t put a manual in the Supra
Also Toyota: puts manual in corolla
Yeah true. Weird decisions
Beaver Boi true. But to be fair, base Corollas always had manuals
Maxfli82 yeah but so did the Supra
supra doesn't sell like the corolla does
Watch them make a higher performance version of the supra in the next few years with a manual
This is the only car I've deemed worthy enough to replace my Celica. Hopefully one will be in my driveway by the end of the year!
This is a very natural successor to the last Celica.
@@rightlanehog3151 yes! Update, got around 7k to put down. Now ya gurl needs a full-time job and the xse in blue flue with moonstone interior will be in my driveway 😍
@@nikkisavo7293 Be patient, there should be some good deals towards the end of the model year. :)
@@rightlanehog3151 so true. But my Celica isn't doing so hot. Kinda becoming a money pit at this point. So I may have to give it up sooner. 💔
@@nikkisavo7293 That's a great point. Don't bury a lot of good money in an old car when you could put it towards a new car that can last 20 years. I learned that the hard way ;)
Go SE manual... shi I got mine for just under 18k... great buy for the what it comes standard.. only thing they thru in on the buy was the wing, all weather mats, and 10yr/100k warranty(for 17,900, including tax & license)... was between the Civic SI and the Corolla hatch... for the price, looks, and tech/comfort the Corolla was the best buy... I was surprised to fall in love with a Toyota because I have been a honda guy since high school... owend 5 different Hondas since 96....
Toyota always has really great stereos in their cars. Toyota's 6 speaker base stereo sounds way better than the 9 speaker Mustang stereo or Kia's 8 speaker infinity system. Honestly it sounds almost as good as the mustang's 12 speaker shaker system imo. Almost. Great vid as always Matt.
Jason Dever I found the Corolla sound really low-powered and tinny. In fact the worst of any compact car.
@@jamesmedina2062 interesting. Every Corolla I've driven and ridden in has had a great stereo and really good low end.
I might get some grief for this. But I think this has a better interior that the Camry. To me it feels much more solid and high quality.
yea better then camry LE my friend got corolla the one above base model its way better interiour then my le camry but camry is bigger and defff got more power mpg is also better on my cam maybe its how she drives i get 33.8 mpg
Would like to see you review a Civic Sport hatch after driving this
Great review Matt, thank you.
Question please, for a manual transmission beginner, would you recommend this or the civic sport? I remember you saying that had a really easy manual too. Thank you.
I’m getting this in May!!!
Buy one for me too 😂😭
R X haha good question
How are you liking it so far? I'm loving mine
To see a person who drives a Mustang GT get enthusiastic about a Corolla is quite a revelation. Too bad Toyota Motor Corporation has declared war on taller drivers with reduced head and leg room in the new hatch and sedan. I wish we got the Corolla wagon sold in Europe that offers adequate space for drivers over 6 feet, their adult passengers and their gear. #WeWantWagons.
Honestly this is a car I might consider to get while trading in my 2012 Civic. I would just be terrified to drive at Sf hills lol
I have this exact trim and live in the City. It has automatic hill brakes so it's not bad at all.
Julian Boyd are the hill brakes on automatically or did you need to press a button to engage it?
Cool looking car...
Man this lil thing has been off my radar but goodness it looks awesome! At the Chicago auto show I loved the new Jetta but upon seeing reviews it seemed to lack power. This looks way more fun and i think it matches it as far as looks and it’s a hatch! I’d totally get this with an upgraded stereo system but college ain’t free and my ‘99 Cherokee is still chugging along so maybe after school I’ll get this for a dd cuz it’s average mpg is literally double my jeep lol. Nice vid and nice car!
Not fan of the big TV installed in the dashboard... Overall awesome car...
I test drove one a few days ago I found the clutch very strange. Hard to find the bite point and has a strange notch at the bottom but still nice to drive
Work it girl
Is such fun to drive a vehicle 🤔
Recently bought this car and I love it except for the substantial road noise.
What have you done to lower that noise?
@@PiLLO360 nothing unfortunately. Pandemic changed priorities...I may look into B-Quiet sound deadening in the spring when I'll be driving it more again. Hoping my next set of tires will also help but I think it's beyond the tires but just lack of sound attenuation all around esp on the highway. U experiencing same issues?
Toyota needs to put the RAV4 engine on this, great looking hatch with lots of potential!
Or the Tundra/Tacoma V8 🤩👀
JK, The Corolla needs the 2.5 as an option and the RAV4 needs the 3.5 V6 as an option. ;)
@@rightlanehog3151 maybe they could go that route of optioning the engine and keep it NA.
@@afuriousblackman or maybe the jdm 1.5 turbo hybrid...
@@keiserious I am not a fan of turbos.
Looks great in XSE trim but the SE trim looks a little under tyred, it needs the bigger wheels/tyres of the XSE. Well done Toyota
Over the winter the potholes in my town turned into craters. 16" wheels are the biggest I would dare use around here.
Yeah I have the se and the tires are small, 205/55 r16. Instead of spending extra on the xse trim I saved that money for bbs rims and nitto tires, my white Corolla hb looks way better
Looks better the more I look at it, hate how we don't get the 2.0 here in Europe. . Just hybrids and a 1.2t for us :/
You get the wagon which is much more practical than this.
@@rightlanehog3151 man I don't like the way that thing looks 😅 besides it's just an even heavier CVT hybrid, I wanted something that balances fun and practicality like this
@@mohda.9420 The Corolla Touring Sports is available with a manual and the 1.2 turbo though it would be nicer with the 2.0. This hatch is like an upgraded Yaris.
@@tkmedia3866 I just want a manual with decent everyday power bruv, is that too much to ask? 😂😭
when my 2007 matrix with 250k miles finally dies ill pick up one of these.
What tires did the corolla hatch come with? Would the tires be the reason to the road noise you mentioned or its just an insulation thing?
Maybe like the corollas of the 80s and 90s?
Sounds like 6th gear is as exactly it should be.
This new 6 speed has two overdrive gears where the 6 speed on the iM had 3!
Matt looks like he is going to a business meeting
How does this hatchback model drive compared to the sedan?
How does this compare, in driving only, to the Mazda3 hatchback?
Matt, great review! Do you think car seats will work in the back? Is this a good option for a dad that wants a bit of fun but needs to cart around kids? Lol
Thanks! Cars.com did a car seat review of this and a rear facing seat only fits if the front seat is moved up. The writer said their wife had to sit uncomfortably close to the dash unfortunately. But if you don’t have a passenger up front, shouldn’t be an issue!
@@MattMaranMotoring This is too stubby for family use unless everyone in the family is under 5'7".
You should never pass in 6th gear, regardless of whatever manual transmission car you are in.

Manufacturers look at used car sales too. And a lot of times, used is the only way to get a manual these days.
Vasya Pupkin they don’t car because they don’t make any money in the 2nd hand sales. Makes no sense.
@@GamerNRetro
Well, you are wrong, so I'm not sure what to add. What makes no sense is that car manufacturers would be so shortsighted to only look at new car sales numbers and not learn form the past.
No dude. Businesses only look at who is buying their product from them. Cars manufactures only cater to new trends of buyers/leasers because that's who gives them money. They see literally ZERO dollars from 2nd hand car sales. It's the same how EA sees zero revenue from used video game sales. Why do you think the manuals are dying? Because nobody is buying them new. It's a common business practice. Would you continue to sell a product, service, whatever that people were not buying? No. @@VasyaIvanovichPupkin
Matt made comments about that in his weekly update video with the Supra. People pissing and moaning that a manual is not offered its because people do not buy it. So I have a person on my side who agrees with me. Not some guy who takes 240p movies of cars and coffee. @@VasyaIvanovichPupkin

just googled car today 10/2023 and that $25k MSRP new price you mentioned...the nearest 1 to me is a 2020 with 52k miles on it with asking price of $24k!!!!! What is going on?
I want it
Can you fit a bike in the back?
So how much would your opinion change on the direct shift CVT version of the same car?
I talk about the CVT version in my original review. It's currently my favorite CVT out of all the ones I've tested in cars. It's still a blast with the CVT.
Instead of passing in 6th, I drop it down to 4th/5th gear to pass. 6 is too slow to pass
Bring back the GT. I say.
Cool car. Like it. But It’s dangerously close to Civic Si money, which has more power, an LSD and an adaptive suspension (with the caveat being that the Si is not a hatchback).
True, but at least in my experience, the Civic feels more nose-heavy and heavier in general and the engine doesn't have as much personality as this one does in the Corolla. If I wanted Civic Si power, I'd go for a Veloster Turbo/Elantra Sport/Forte GT. They're all just as quick but feel much lighter.
Also that toyota motor will do at least 200,000 more maintenance free miles
My 2002 Camry only has 158 hp.
Bring back the Celica!
Toyota should make XSE Sedan 6 speed too😤
They do!
2 corollas in manual or 1 civic type r? I think i would pick civic type r for hatch manual.
2 Corollas.
God the new civic is so ugly
LOVE this corolla !!
I cant wait for Toyota to make a HOT HATCH model to this new corolla its going to be sick. Looks very cool... some wheels tinted windows and lower it and boom neck breaker.
Toyota4Life supposedly Toyota will be offering a sport tuned version of all the cars. A GR version at the very least and if we are lucky, a GRMN version. Considering the GRMN Yaris, that would be a pretty hot hatch.

Won't sell. This XSE is already pushing 28k U.S. Dollars. Toyota Charges customers for any extra effort they need to engineer. If they were to turbocharge it, it'll be over 30K. You can get a Civic Si for less money than this Corolla. Toyota may be the most reliable Automaker, but they are no longer a good value.
Carlos Guevara no longer a good value. Are you high? Lol
@@Toyota4Life my family bought Toyotas for 50 years. Yes, 28k for a mediocre Corolla is a bad value. Unlike a fanboy like you, we actually owned Toyotas for longer than you been alive. I still own a 1974 Corona SR with a JDM 18R-G, and a 1984 Toyota Celica Supra, as reminders of my Childhood. The highest quality Toyotas were the one built in the 1990's. Current Toyotas may be reliable, but are overpriced with average quality and build assembly. Some of us know Toyotas from the ground up. I can look you in the eye and say with confidence, this New XSE is not worth 28k. My 2005 Corolla XRS was more fun and was only 16k when I bought that new. This Corolla does nothing to excite me. The quality is lacking.
I wish the Camry (At least the TRD) came in a manual.
Yes I agree. Camry with a manual and V6 is a winner.
If the Accord can do it then Camry can do it too.
His it has quick has the Ford fiesta se sedan dual clutch 6spd automatic matt

Slick lil car. Wish it was roomier
Its a freaking hatch back ,
what do you expect ?
Something as roomy as my old versa hatch! Freaking a!
@@JoesGoldenGarage Toyota did so many things right with this new hatch but people accustomed to a Matrix will be shocked by the diminished interior dimensions.
@@rightlanehog3151 I got this car after driving my Matrix for 10 years. True, it is much smaller and has less trunk space. On the flip side, it is a much smoother, slicker, ride and the manual transmission feels great . Whether the smaller size is OK for you depends on how many people you generally drive around and what you tend to haul around. For me, it's more than roomy enough and the trunk can easily handle shopping trips and such.
@@gabithemagyar Great points.. A small percentage of Matrix/Vibe models were equipped with an independent rear suspension and upgraded engine but generally the Matrix was much more utilitarian. I think the seat height is also a big factor for taller drivers. I have been driving my Vibe for 14 years and it would be a big change to sit as low as the new hatch's level. Of course the new Corolla wagon would offer the best of both worlds if they would sell it to us. I hope your new Corolla is as reliable as your Matrix!
You can get se sedan with automatic? I thought so anyway
Yeah you can, I meant to say manual is only available in SE, not SE only available in manual. My mistake.

Most all CTV transmissions are crap, when a 5/6 speed manual is available I`m interested in that car!
Jayson Natividad cvt transmissions are made to fail doesn’t matter who the vehicle comes from it’s a terrible option for an auto and will not surpass the dual clutch auto in terms of reliability and heavy load use
I prefer the mazda 3 over this one from what ive been seeing on the reviews.
Thystaff Thywill Yeah, Mazda is more fun to drive but toyota is more reliable.
Mazda is 3rd on reliability. Im not sure about Corrolla vs Mazda3 reliability comparison since both are new and only time will tell. I know if you run your car hard, dont maintain it well, skip the maintenance schedule, it will make your car unreliable.

They need to make a VW R32 competitor, a Crorolla like this with AWD and closer to 300hp would be awesome!
Everyone keeps saying that. I agree, the chassis is capable of handling a lot more power. At the end of the day, it's Toyota and it's a Corolla. The fact they took it this far is a good first step.. Their bread and butter is reliable and fuel efficient cars.. I think they made this half step into the hot hatch arena to see how people take it. It's risky to jump in with that pricy of a Corolla right off. Toyota knows what they are doing and will turn the volume up to 11 if the market shows sales for it..
It is a HATCHBACK take some time to show the space that the backseat down provide s, it is not all about the bling and tech stuff, cheers!
Trans: It's a system that will be a wallets nightmare should it break down, and it WILL break down as all computer components do when exposed to heat. As much as I like all the bells and whistles with the new cars, I wish more they would make machines rather than these computers that require a computer technician as well as a mechanic.

Lighter, more fun handling than a WRX, just less power.
MAZDA 3 HATCH!!!
I did not already looked and tested the 2019 Corolla and especially its engine. But (only subjective) I am sure the new one (engine) is much "better" than the 1,3 with the 6-speed manual (I talk of the German one). Of course: In the city you can cruise at 50 km / h (about 30 mph) in 5 th gear. But for motorway or overtaking trucks / other cars it is not made. It has about 100 HP but nevertheless of course: but because of it has no turbo under 2.500 / 3000 rpm there is no fun. In my opinion it is too much downsized. I remember older cars (1,8 or 2 l petrol) with about 100 HP without turbo as well. There you felt the power much more. My conclusion / opinion for the old one: The old 1,3 l petrol engine is not great. I hope and am looking for to get a free date to check out the new one as lately as possible (maybe the hybrid, too).
Thank you for your review! It has reminded me to test the new Corolla.
Europe's new Corolla has a 1.2 turbo engine with adequate levels of power.

Are you a dolt?! A CVT, really?!
William Keith Isn’t it obvious he was being sarcastic? You might need some more coffee LOL
That color looks amazing. What a shame Toyota didn’t use a turbocharged engine for this. Would be a truly amazing daily.
Toyota screwed up by not giving this a turbo. I’d still take the Civic Hatchback sport over it because of the powertrain.
They've been hinting that a faster version is coming.
Matt Maran Motoring I hope so. This car looks so good and it’s sad it’s not decently quick.
If it auto revs for you the it’s not a manual... “auto” is the keyword

God I can’t wait for this “tablet on the dash” style infotainment to be over. Is this really what people want? It’s so ugly!
Its a fucking Corolla who cares
The dashboard

Actually, I like it. It may not look great, but I find that having the large display up at that height means I can see what's on it (e,g, GPS map) with a small, almost just sideways, flick of my eyes rather than having to take my eyes off the road to look down. It's large enough that I never have to stare at it to pick out what I am looking for.
