Great review and video Tommy ! I was considering a Toyota Camry but the Corolla seems more practical for my needs and it will be easier to drive for my aging mother .
I'm surprised that Tommy didn't mention that Toyota bumped up the horsepower and torque for the 2023 Corolla hybrid. 2022 Corolla hybrid had 121 hp and 105 lb ft of torqye and 2023 Corolla hybrid has 134 hp and 156 lb ft of torque.
Ehhh does this qualify though? Something like a Hyundai Tucson has a real transmission and a mechanical awd for much more responsive results and I would argue a more tried and true setup, than the cvt separated motor/engine system... for about the same buck.
I really like this! I've always said that if I found myself needing to buy a simple, affordable, basic _car,_ that I would probably go with a Corolla. The only thing it didn't have that I would have wanted was AWD. I'm VERY curious what this vehicle would cost. A simple, AWD hybrid car is a wonderful choice, and if it could be had for a price somewhere in the low-mid 30s, well, that's just about perfect.
@@takenpictures Ehh, I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if it's that low. So few vehicles are in the 20s anymore, and this is both a hybrid AND AWD. Those will both kick the price up, I'm guessing to the low 30s.
Keep in mind that $22,800 is before the $1,100 destination charge and it's FWD. AWD is $2000 extra. So the car in the video will be 28k out the door including taxes and dealer feees.
I like the body style of it. Too many cars are trying to be edgy instead of just have a simple design. I like the basic shifter in the center, some vehicles go over the top with that. I've always preferred physical keys/ignition. The gauges have a lot to be desired and I think Toyota could have definitely made them look nicer without costing anymore money. I'm not a huge fan of that whitish color on the dash but it isn't bad. The upper parts of the door handles really make it look cheap. Just a few minor differences would make a big difference imo. Also, if someone is shorter, idk what that center armrest will do for them. It'll be a cheap car that gets phenomenal MPGs. I'm excited to see the hatchback. Hopefully that'll be Hybrid. Also, what's up with Toyota putting the electric rearend in all these? Is it really that desired? I don't live in a place that gets much snow and I've never had issues with needing the rear wheels.
I’ve been waiting for the 23 Corolla since this summer. I want to get the hybrid with a trim other than the LE and AWD. I definitely plan to order one when they’re available.

Just found out in the comments that a 2020 model was one trim level and had features like a digital dash and push button start, so the sad cost cutting is pathetic for 2022. My 2018 Clarity basically gives me everything I'd want for the base model, vents in the back, dual zone climate, heated seats. More expensive car but no cost cutting.

@@nodak81 what kind of roads do you have where you live? I’m in Southern California. Definitely not great roads where I live in the high desert. Basic? Affordable transportation? Okay.... Where's the Mitsubishi Mirage or the KIA Rio that should be in this video. Even in base trim, a Toyota Corolla is not going to be affordable for Working class stiffs. Used to be. But now it's the type of vehicle you take out a loan, put yourself into debt, and slowly pay off. Knowing that once you do, you'll have an incredibly reliable vehicle that with basic maintenance will easily last many long years. One of the few vehicles out there actually worth taking out a loan because in the future it's still going to be not just running. But running reliably. After 5 years, you'll be lucky if those two other cars are even on the road anymore.

It's a Toyota, and it's not all black and bleak like a funeral parlor basement? Wow, the light is actually reflecting. Now, break the trend of all white instrument gauges with white indicator needles. Pretty much, any color needle would stand out better.
2:59 - (in the midst of the enthusiastic sales spiel) "It's got 136 horsepower." Toyota is putting their new 5th generation hybrid with 194 hp in the soon-to-be-released Corolla Cross Hybrid. I was expecting that same system in the '23 Corolla Sedan, as well. No one expects this to be the GR, but 136 hp, with the extra battery pack weight (especially at CO elevations of over 5,000') is, shall we say, not very desirable. And Tommy knows it.
2022 Corolla hybrid had 121 hp so this is an improvement. Also 2023 Corolla hybrid has 156 lb ft of torque so it will feel peppy, only weighs 2850 pounds total.
Toyota killed it with this design! (That means it is good, lol.) Look at those headlights and the area directly between them, wtf? Look at the grille, so big, so simple, no silly-looking smiley face. Look at the badge area and those cheekbone areas at the sides, just wow. It's like a tank from some anime, yet normal-looking for the average person.
For cars with physical keys you do not have to press the break to turn them on. I do not understand why people with cars with normal keys do this. Push button start yes you do have to press the break.
So, the decontented the base Hybrid for 2023. No more keyless smart entry with push start. No more alloy wheels with aero hubcaps. Downgraded instrument panel screen. It used to be a digital display on hybrids.
That's a great update for this new "baseline" model (LE) Corolla: AWD + hybrid. All the Camrys and Corollas my family has owned have easily lasted (or could have if we didn't replace them with a newer model) 200,000 miles.
Ooh, I HATE those door handles. Didn’t Toyota learn by having those types of handles in the early 2000s? I’ve driven a 2001 Corolla and had to replace the door handles 6 or more times on both the passenger and driver side. Same with our current 2000 Sienna! In 20 years everybody will be replacing those handles too. Same problem over 20 years… stupid.
Apple car play & Android auto are now wireless. lithium ion battery pack has more power than previous nickel hydride. The Le is $1250 less in 2023. The fuel mpg range has dropped a few mpg. Toyota safety sense 3.0 is new. 8 inch screen larger. This is a absolute vargin.
I wonder if there's a way to retrofit that rear motor on a stick SE sedan, so I can electronically creep the car in stop-and-go traffic & skip those “clutch-wearing 1st & reverse gears”.
I’m confused. Why did they revert back to more primitive features for the 2023 LE hybrid compared to the 2022 LE hybrid? For example, the 2022 version had push button start, big digital dashboard display, and alloy wheels, but the 2023 version has key start, small digital dashboard, and steel wheels??
Unfortunately you’ll have to get used to it, seems like all new cars have the tablet style screen, even Ford (ahem). At least it’s not so polarizing on the outside
They have been making the AWD Hybrid Corolla wagon for the Japanese market for several years. It is probably built on the same assembly lines making our Hybrid sedans. Europe gets a longer wheel base, British built Corolla wagon which is only FWD.
I would like to get a 2023 Corolla Hybrid. But higher trims cost more. Funny thing is, they should allow you to buy higher trims cheaper, but they wont make any money then. Haha 😆 I have spoken to a number of my colleagues at work, and they said, that gone are the days where you can afford a higher trim car for less. I don’t make a lot of money, since I work for a minimum wage. Owning a home is impossible for me, because I have a condition that makes my thoughts go directly into my subconscious mind and twist my point of view to absurd levels when literally where I think I am a God of sorts. So speaking about cars, Now it’s like this - money up front and have a limited amount of toys to play with, if you understand what I am referring to. Work more for less. Sure, some people might call me delusional, but let’s be honest - anyone who are working for a minimum or high paid wage should be able to have a good amount of buying power and not like when you’re poor, you’re poor and stay that way - go back to your hole so to speak and get out of our sight. I can work harder, but my blood pressure doesn’t allow me to. I go to the gym and try to exercise a little harder and my head is ready to explode afterwards. So yeah, I am kinda stuck - Lol. 😝 I will never reach the level of famous people, that I would be counting millions and help my parents pay off their house and debts. I feel like a burden to them, but I try my best by giving them $1000 a month for mortgage payments. So yeah, the car I have now is constantly breaking apart - it’s one thing after the other. At least it’s not burning oil for now 😂. I wish there would be a miracle of sorts though. And forgive me for all this baloney I talk about, I am just trying to be a an optimist! Lol 😂

Why panic over hubcaps. You can easily get your own hubcaps aftermarket or even alloy wheels form a local tire shop for way less than a dealer would charge. Same with people who are angry about not having standard floor mats in some cars. There are so many great floor mat choices can order online that are better than OEM.
Before COVID, the real price of a base Corolla (after dealer discounts and incentives) was about $14k. If the price of this is now about $28k, that is doubling in 4 years. Affordable?
I haven’t heard that in regards to the Camry. My neighbor is the general manager of a Toyota store. He was telling me basically the RAV4 Prime was about the only thing he can’t get his hands on timely. Camrys and Corollas are fairly easy. We were just talking about this a week or two ago.

Last Japanese car with awd in basic spec was Mitsubishi Lancer from 2015. Great that Toyota has done this.
Ehhh does this qualify though? Something like a Hyundai Tucson has a real transmission and a mechanical awd for much more responsive results and I would argue a more tried and true setup, than the cvt separated motor/engine system... for about the same buck.
@@nigelwilson7395 Yes, it qualify, electric motors have a lot of torque. It is more than enough for a vehicle of this size.

I'm pretty sure it will be in the mid 20's. It's a good amount of car, for the money.
@@takenpictures Ehh, I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if it's that low. So few vehicles are in the 20s anymore, and this is both a hybrid AND AWD. Those will both kick the price up, I'm guessing to the low 30s.
@@MultiPurposeReviewer I was just guessing 20's, because once you get into the low 30's, you can get a base RAV4 Hybrid with AWD.

Aren’t we all aging? You too?
Base corolla hybrid for 22800?! Thats going to sell like crazy. Hope they can keep up wifh production.
And 53mpg!
They won’t they hardly can it’s not the chip anymore it’s certain plastic metals etc
10% car loans will limit buyers, they won’t have any trouble keeping up
@@user-tb7rn1il3q Its a corolla not bmw. I think they will sell like crazy
It would be way cheaper than that if you are talking about usd. It will be around 25k

I sure would pick this extremely reliable extremely fuel efficient Corolla over the ugly overstyled overpriced unreliable 2023 Elantra.

Have you had the awd in snow yet. I'll be getting one in a few years the 2014 has been nothing but great with 137k. Not a problem
Would take easily over a Model 3. Build quality way better and here in California this is more rare than those garbage Lego cars built by Trashla and Enron Musk.
I’d be willing to bet it’s the mechanical twin of the Prius awd just because both of their awd systems sound similar with the independent rear electric motor

Corolla hatch is a lot smaller than Corolla sedan. Corolla hybrid comes only as a sedan or crossover in the US.
I do like base model cars as well however I think if they put the XSE wheels it would make all the difference.
Toyota is making The XSE trim sedans in AWD without the Hybrid now and that’s the one I want!
I do not want the XSE or SE 18 inch wheels. Lots of potholes in my area which means bent rims and flat tires. I prefer the base wheels.

Wonder if the Toyota security key change will keep Openpilot from working on this model. Once upon a time, the Corolla was the preferred vehicle for Openpilot hands-free driving.
The one trim up makes such a huge improvement in looks on the Corolla, bigger wheels/tires and bumper trims, interior upgrades, for just a little bit more.
Bigger wheels with thinner sidewall tires = Rough ride and constantly popping tires on pot holes. No thanks.
@@nodak81 what kind of roads do you have where you live? I’m in Southern California. Definitely not great roads where I live in the high desert. I’ve been on low profile tires for around a decade and only had 2 flat tires. And I do Uber as a second job. So it’s driven a decent amount of miles. They’re 225/40r18 tires on 18” by 7 3/4” wheels. It’s also a Corolla. And it hasn’t ruined the ride for myself. Maybe I’m more tolerant to firmer rides or prefer it and didn’t know it. But the flat tire thing has never been a problem for me.
There will be model levels of 2023 Corolla Hybrids so you can get nicer wheels and dash electronics with interior appointments, if you want to pay. 2023 Prius is coming out around first of year. Major redesign and looks to be much sportier.
Wonder if the AWD option will make it to the Corolla Hatchback? - EDIT: It doesn't look like it according to Toyota's website. Sad.
Not all of us want a AWD Corolla. In the South and a lot of the country AWD is more $, less efficient, heavier, more costly to repair. We would like a phev or bev Corolla….are you listening Toyota!!!
Awd, hybrid, reliable, practical.. best ever sedan..
It's a Toyota, and it's not all black and bleak like a funeral parlor basement? Wow, the light is actually reflecting. Now, break the trend of all white instrument gauges with white indicator needles. Pretty much, any color needle would stand out better.
Corolla with AWD, lol! YEs cause anybody buys a corolla for anything other than fuel economy. Lets get real here...
So you got Nissan to sponsor your positive review of a Toyota model? That is frickin' hilarious!!! 🤣
Sorry guys. Good video, but that sponsorship was so cringe with a different vehicle class on your Corolla vid actually want to learn about 👎
There is no excuse for that horribly cheap instrument panel. Reminds me of the Chevy Sonic. CHEAP !
I love my Corolla. It's nice knowing when on the road you're surrounded by idiots that spend way too much money on a far inferior product.
Considering it's 2k cheaper, I'll take it!
That's a great update for this new "baseline" model (LE) Corolla: AWD + hybrid. All the Camrys and Corollas my family has owned have easily lasted (or could have if we didn't replace them with a newer model) 200,000 miles.
I remember when LE was the top trim in the camry and corolla, now its the most base trim.

My brother has a 21’ RAV4 and I do get to drive it sometimes. Can see that being a possibility with how they feel.

2020-2022 corolla hybrid only had 1 trim. 2023 corolla hybrid has multiple trims, the one shown in the video is the cheapest trim.
I'm confused. So the hybrid version no longer comes with alloys under the wheel covers and has a conventional analog instrument cluster?

Make this exact car a wagon and BOOM go the sales!
They have been making the AWD Hybrid Corolla wagon for the Japanese market for several years. It is probably built on the same assembly lines making our Hybrid sedans. Europe gets a longer wheel base, British built Corolla wagon which is only FWD.
Estimated combined fuel economy is 48-50 mpg, depending on trim and drivetrain. Knowing toyota, real life numbers should be close to estimate.
Do not like the electric parking brake
Well all new cars seem to have it. My biggest fear is traditional keys phasing out over push button.

I am taking medicine to suppress those thoughts. Because without it it’s like water, just add color to it. Kinda like insanity. Lol 😂

The problem is that many of the hatchbacks too closely resembled station wagons. Wagons are a death sentence for auto manufacturers.

I bought a brand new 2023 Toyota Carolla hybrid in June of 2023. On my first tank of gas I got over 60 miles per gallon. 😅 The car was very comfortable to drive and the pickup was better than I expected. Overall, I love this car and hope and expect it to get 300,000 miles or more.
No body, I repeat NOBODY EVER GETS EXCITED ABOUT A BASED TRIM unless they’re paid to. If saving money is the goal, you buy a used car that’s a lot nicer for less money. You can save a ton of money and get more features with say a used Toyota Avalon.
