2021 Toyota Corolla XSE - Watch Before You Buy!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 сер 2020
- The 2021 Corolla is here! The new Corolla has morphed into a mid-sized, upscale, high MPG sedan from its humble roots. We took it out to the canyons and drove it like a sports car to find out how capable it is when you push it. We found the chassis to be stiff and capable in the corners, although the XSE trim package does not turn it into an outright sports car. The underlying chassis dynamics are excellent.
Driving it around the city we found the ride to be very comfortable and the engine and transmission are decently responsive. We found it returned about 26mpg while thrashing around and driving with a heavy foot. The Corolla never complained. The CVT transmission is surprisingly good and will easily convince most people it's a traditional automatic. That's pretty high praise coming from a manual shifting aficionado who loves to row his own gears.
The Corolla has Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 as a standard suite of technology that we found works quite effectively. Our tester fully equipped was $28,845 including Premium Audio, Adaptive lighting and destination fees.

As the owner of a 6-speed Scion iM, I got the chance to drive a 2020 Corolla SE (as a loaner) for half a day while getting new brakes installed. I was pretty amazed at how much better and more fun the new Corolla is! I was very impressed! A lot of reviewers still seem to think the new Corolla is too slow and too boring. It's definitely no race car, but I really enjoyed driving the new Corolla. It's fast enough for daily driving. It's not super fast, but I also never felt it was slow or lacking for power. The only thing is that, as a hatchback fan, I wish Toyota would offer a sunroof in the hatchback! But the new Corolla is almost certainly my next car. Well done, Toyota! Great car!
A hatch for the sunroof would be nice! Here's my 2021 hatch review ua-cam.com/video/Y-KWuUosn-0/v-deo.html
Moon roof option is 2k just they aren't making them right now cause of supply
Eric, you're going to be a legend. Keep this stuff up
Thanks Cameron! Appreciate it!
I got a 2020 Corolla SE and I really love it! Definitely a lot better than the previous models. Great review by the way!
Thanks! 👍
These are 40 series tires, so not exactly super low profile. The ride quality overall is very good, but the terrible all season tires have a lot of impact harshness. A better tire would improve the ride quality significantly.
Very informative review. Keep up good work.
I like where Toyota is going with headlights.
I like the look. I think it’s right for the market.
Yeah, Eric's personality is what made me subscribe to this channel. He seems like a good dude.
Appreciate it!
I just got the exact same car I love it so much
Can't wait to see the Corolla GR when it's released.
Yeah super jazzed for that!
I have the 2021 corolla XSE and I love it so much!!!!!!
It should last a long time =)
@eduardo diamante, could you program the toyota remote connect on you car, I got the same car
@@hecsuul the dealer did it for me !!!
Thanks bro I’m have to go
Very well made the video, easy to understand, great edits.
Gained a sub :D
Appreciate it
This a kind of car's video i'll see once againg. Love Toyota Corolla SE 2020 In red barcelona.
44 million? Holy hell. I actually really like those seats. Great production, Eric!
Thanks buddy! Yeah 44 million of these. One of the top-selling cars of all time. It was #1 in the late 70s.
@@revmatchtv with 44 million units sold its now the best selling car in the world. Beating the VW beetle
I’m still driving my 2008 Corolla. I hope Toyota release a 2022 XSE trim Corolla. The 2021 XSE’s are hard to find.
I got the 2021 SE on Halloween 😁 the celestial blueish metallic
Do you recommend it? Anything you don't like about it?
@@braetonwilson4296 it runs really good and i get good mileage. It takes 13 bucks to get a full tank. Although i did have a battery issues but Toyota said it was a bad battery so they swapped it.
@@theartst7992 2021 Toyotas with dead batteries are quite common. A towing guy told me he's been towing a lot of new Toyotas due to dead batteries. Fortunately, Toyota is paying for new batteries. Thanks for sharing your experience.
BTW, is the celestite metallic color high maintenance? Like does it look dusty and dirty all the time or can you go a week without washing your car?
@@braetonwilson4296 yeah thats what a tower told me too. And nope i went 2 weeks withouts cleaning it and it looked great. It looks amazing at night too especially with the J shaped lights.
Looks like a scirocco. Love it
You're right! I didn't really notice the nose has Scirocco vibes. It's a handsome car, although I prefer the hatch for looks and practicality.
RevMatchTV totally agree with the hatch version. This is the first corolla i actually like, finally toyota is getting it right on the lineup
@@tecnogadget2 Here's the 2020 Corolla hatch review. I like it a lot ua-cam.com/video/FoQL-u60bsE/v-deo.html
Waiting for the GR corolla!
Same
They could easily just slap a small turbo on the 1.8 and take it up to a conservative 210-220hp to compete with the Veloster, Civic Si, and potentially the GTI (if it handles well enough). I would totally consider buying one if they did that. and, obviously, it would need to at the very least offer a manual
They definitely could. I think the next move will be the GR Corolla. This TNGA-C chassis is very stiff. It's an amazing platform and I'm actually excited to see what they can do with it.
The best part? You CAN get this with a manual!!
Edit: I can't wait to see the hatch manual review next!
Phil Gudet I get the manual hatch in 2 days
I have always wondered.. why hasn't Toyota created a direct competitor to the Civic Si? I think this current Corolla looks AWESOME, and I really wish they would make a competitor to the Si but in the SEDAN body. I am excited to see what the GR Corolla will look like, but.. the sedan looks SO good in my opinion!
GR Corolla coming soon.
Good question! The Apex edition should meet the Si head on except in the power front. I asked for a review sample, but they are not in the press fleet yet. The GR Corolla will be priced above the Si and close to the Civic Type R.
RevMatchTV yikes. If its priced close to the Veloster N, it should do well, but, eh, ill just shut up and wait for the official reveal
Talk about the Toyota mr2 spyder crossover it’s a hybrid as well it’s on the Page of Toyota downtown Los Angeles
DM me on Intagram. No idea what you’re talking about
Wide tires give you a smother ride (the LE), narrow tires give you better handling (XSE).
You have it backwards actually. Wider tires = more contact patch = more grip (all other things being equal).
You killed Kenny
I would say its a shame you didn't a chance to drive the manual version but realistically this is the model people actually buy.
I get the 2021 manual hatchback next week!
For those of us who keep cars for years: What is the estimated life span in odometer miles before you need to change the clutch and do you need to drop the engine to change the clutch?
This isn't something that is published, but I've driven cars on the original clutch for over 100k before selling the car with the same clutch. 2 - I don't know.
Wow this Corolla is not the same corolla I had from the 90s. Those seats look like they can actually hold you in place, The interior can even rival the older Lexus CT200H. Yeah it's power and torque is even better than the old 2005 XRS.
The Corolla has moved on from econobox. The materials are nice and the build quality is high. The seats are not super supportive but they are comfy. I’m not sure if the weight of the XRS but I’d guess it’s lighter. This Corolla is not powerful by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s adequate to get you around and it’s sorta fun to wring it out.
@Richard Favreau Hey man I agree the new corolla is nice but no need to be morbidly aggressive like that 2020 is tragic enough already and RevMatchTV is entitled to their own opinion even if you don't agree. Let's be civil here. From one fan to another have a good one.
I'm looking at the new corollas 2021. Can anyone tell me what they think would be more reliable the 1.8l or the 2.0l? Non hybrid. Also what previous Toyotas did these 1.8l and 2.0l engines show up on? as reference for me to research.
I myself got the 2020 model.with 1.8 litree along with matris 2005 with 1.8.litre too.. the engine is reliable for everyday driving, one of the best
I hope Toyota makes 200ish HP, fwd, hatch Corolla as a competitor to the golf GTI
That would be fun!
Just wait another year or two its been confirmed that a hothatch will be comming probably using the corolla chassis. After all it looks to be designed for more than commuting
Freal Solidus Auxil The GR Corolla is on the way. It should be unveiled within 6-8 months. I did a video on it very recently. ua-cam.com/video/QIxnbs1r4pU/v-deo.html
@@revmatchtv yes I know but isn't it meant to be awd, that would be more of a golf R competitor rather than a fwd GTI competitor
I’m rocking a manual 96 corolla that I’m super charging soon,
That sounds like a fun project
That will be an epic little car! Keep us posted!
It’s got a SC12 out of a 4agze I’m looking for 150-200hp
It’s on coils and a cheap wing lmao oh and real TOMS Rays racing wheels form japan
@@micaiahflores1592 Send me a photo on Instagram if you're there. I'd love to see it.
There should be a model below the new GR model with about 200hp (2.5L)
That would be interesting! The Apex Edition has better suspension and only 600 made in manual, but the same 2.0L engine. There is so much potential in this platform. I'd love to see them come out with a Civic Si competitor for under $30K.
RevMatchTV Yes we need a Corolla “SI”, which is why i suggested using the camry engine like the last Xrs
I don't understand why Toyota makes the corolla so slow. Every Toyota car I driven is pretty fast. Canary, Avalon, 4runner, Tacoma, and tundra. They always have pull but I got a corolla and I don't like how slow it is.
big fx 4Runner is very slow actually. Corolla Is an economy car, designed for longevity and MPG. Its competition is equally slow for the most part. You want more power, you move up in class. This formula has been around since the car was invented.
Thats about to changed, hopefully
What are your thoughts on mercedes avtr?
I don’t have any. It’s a concept car with emphasis on “concept”.
@@revmatchtv Do you thing the concept looks good?
Does it have a moon roof?
Yes. You can see where the moonroof is open after 4:00
It's a two speed automatic like my first car, a 57 Chevy with a 265 V/8 and a two speed power glide automatic. Nothing new here.
So much better looking in the hatch 😭
I prefer the hatch. Here's my review: ua-cam.com/video/FoQL-u60bsE/v-deo.html
RevMatchTV would love to see a shoot out between the Corolla, Mazda3, Civic and Impreza hatch.
The Corolla isn't meant to be a race car! The Corolla success formula has always been an extremely reliable car with great gas mileage.
The Corolla is for the guy who doesn't want to be explaining to his boss he's not at work because the car broke down. Also, if you're driving 60 miles a day going to and from work, as I was, you want good fuel economy. Everything else you get with a Corolla is just the frosting on the cake.
It's a great car for its segment
Any word on CVT reliability compared to Toyotas previous auto transmissions?
I honestly can't say as I haven't done the research. This transmission is about 4 years old, so it's still early. I didn't discuss this in the video, but the build quality is very high and it's clear that the Dynamic Forces engines have been designed to go a very long time. I'd imagine a similar amount of engineering went into the transmission.
@@revmatchtv thanks Eric, I guess we'll have to see huh? We just added one of these to the family but as Toyota goes I think it'll be just fine. Great video btw
@@zalien6 Thank you! The bugs nearly ate us alive filming this! I shot the closing 6 times because they kept swarming my face! haha Congrats on the Corolla! I'm sure it will treat you well.
I'd just get the manual
@@philspaghet I know lol me too but it's for my girlfriend. I'm gonna get an 86 Hakone Edition next year . I'm already at 47% saved up for it 😎
Topanga Canyon?
Nope
Looks like a focus.
A little bit
This Car is now a certified member of the "Fun Drive Club" right now, besides the Miata, Focus, Golf, S2000, GT86, Civic, M3, etc.
Edit: Now I can't wait for the GR Corolla to be released!
The Apex will be MUCH better. This is still soft. The GR Corolla is what I'm waiting for. Before that I'm reviewing the Corolla HB manual next week.,
Hello
Hey there!
My CVT transmission has failed in my brand new 2020 toyota Corolla SE with not even twenty thousand kilometres on it it's under warranty but toyota has kept my car for over a month and I still haven't received my car back! If you're looking to buy a new car I would "not" recommend a Toyota with a CVT transmission and I strongly believe that new Toyotas are not as good!
Thanks for the info.
The Civic is a better handling car by a longshot
A back to back comparison would be cool ;)
Corolla handles is by far better than civic. Believe that
Richard Favreau ya I disagree
Toyota Brony considering your grammar skills I’ll confidently ignore that statement
Richard Favreau I literally replied, race has NOTHING to do with any of this, I don’t care if your wrong, it doesn’t matter to me if your white, african american, asian, etc
I can fit three of you in my trunk, crown Vic
[GTA]monkey The P71 is massive! I’m a secret fan :)
Upping the interior quality like Mazda will just raise the price too much...
...Keep Corolla simple and price low (for working class)..
... if you want luxury interior; get a Lexus!
Keep our Corolla price low and affordable and cheap to repair/maintenance and very long lasting!
Don’t up the interior with unnecessary fancy crap!
Respectfully I disagree
@@mizutsunesbubbles
Then you should give me some of your excess money....

Boom! On it today! Here's a cookie =)🍪
RevMatchTV thank you very much :)
The words corolla and fun should never be used together
Well in nowadays it does. The new corolla with a 6 speed manual is really fun to drive
I enjoyed it! Would I love more power? Of course!
'Surprisingly' fun ??????
Highly sarcastic
No, I liked it. It's not a sports car, but I enjoyed it. The underlying dynamics are very good.
@@revmatchtv 👍
Meh, just another econobox
The quality, fit and finish I didn’t mention, but it’s very good. There are fewer and fewer non CUV offerings in the space. Personally I’ll take a car above a cross over.
@@revmatchtv I would take just about any sedan over a cross over but that's really not saying much. Since it's comparing apples to oranges.
@Richard Favreau I wouldn't consider myself "rich," but I do have standards. If that's what you mean.
@Richard Favreau The lady doth protest too much, methinks. I think you know deep down it's just a meh car, but feel you need to defend it because it's the best you can afford. Which is ok, if all you can afford is an econobox, that's great it beats walking to work.
@Richard Favreau Just because Toyota added some ricey bumper dosen't change the fact is still just an other econobox. It's a fine car if you just need to get from A to B. but it's going to be a very boring drive.
It's FWD, it doesnt make good power, and doesnt come with a manual. It's not hot. It's not cool, it's not fun.
We want the FUN cars that Europe and Japan get. We dont want this "styled up" econobox garbage.
Lobby the manufacturers for what you want. They are having a hard time finding buyers for cars as opposed to cross overs
@@revmatchtv I'd rather just go and buy a ford focus rs. That says way more to car companies than a letter or e-mail ever could. I do still want my rwd corolla though.... *sob*
@@ChaotiX1 If you live in the EU/UK you're in luck because as you know, Ford stopped selling cars in North American aside from the Mustang.
@Richard Favreau I'm not saying I want to drive like a member of the Fast and Furious franchise, I just want the same cars that other countries get. Its called fairness.
@@ChaotiX1 Market demand and regulation drives regional car availability. Not fairness.
