A Damaged Sideboard is Transformed into a Kitchen Island - Extreme Furniture Makeover!

  • I am so excited to finally get to show you this makeover! I've been using this in my kitchen now for a few weeks and it was just what I needed! Plenty of storage space for all my gadgets underneath and lots of extra counter space above... and with everything we're bringing in from the garden lately, that's a huge help for me as I work though processing everything.
    Can you believe this is only the second piece of furniture we've specifically painted/refinished for our own use? The other one is the dresser we flipped into a TV stand last year ( • Extreme Painted Furnit... ) and boy is that getting it's use! The kids go in and out of those drawers every day to grab legos, blocks, diapers, all the things... and it is holding up beautifully! With all the cooking and canning I do this time of year though, I'm pretty sure this island might just give the TV stand a run for it's money when it comes to how much it gets used!
    I hope you enjoy this furniture flip as much as I'm enjoying actually using it! ~Heather

    I think you gave new life to a piece that was terribly outdated and would have likely ended up in a land fill. Nevermind the people who “shutter” at up cycling and painting wood. Do what you want in your home. It turned out GREAT!

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you ❤️ this piece is very well loved! I use it every day for food prep and it's the extra counter space we desperately needed! I don't mind the negative comments... a lot of the furniture we pick up is so cheap because they were "no bids" and nobody wanted them 🤷‍♀️ -Heather

    Beautifully transformed to be the best fit for your family. One question....I didn't understand the shims and all for the top "movement". A novice (me) question...why would the top move?

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 роки тому

      Thanks! The shims are to help air flow through in between the two solid surfaces. If you were installing the top on new kitchen cabinets, for example, that have no top and only sides you wouldn't have a problem with it. But putting one large flat surface onto another can trap moisture in between and potentially give issues.
      The "movement" is a property of all wood - as humidity levels change (especially in an area that changes climate drastically) wood expands and contracts as it gains moisture and dries back out. It's important to allow for that expansion and contraction to prevent any cracking and splitting in your surface. In the case of a butcher block top, for example, it is possible for cracks to start developing down the lines where the blocks are glued together if it doesn't have the room to expand and contract.
      Hopefully that all makes sense! 😊

      It was actually just painted at first, but we decided to add heavy duty hooks that attached to the underside of the top overhang so we could hang our cast iron pans back there. Works out great, and has the benefit of added storage!

    Beautiful! But I dont' get why you drilled holes in the old top and then put those screws with washers in the holes? How do the holes help? Why not just set the new top down and screw longer screws with washers right through the old top into the new top?
    Also I dont' see in the description where you got that butcher block. Where did you buy it?

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY

      I picked up the top at Lowes (I meant to put it in the description and forgot for some reason). It's back to normal price now, but was 40% at the time. www.lowes.com/pd/The-Baltic-Butcher-Block-The-Baltic-Butcherblock-4-ft-Unfinished-Natural-Straight-Butcher-Block-Birch-Kitchen-Countertop/1000815498

    If its chalk paint, you can always water down. Plus, makes it a tad smoother for the end result.

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 роки тому +1

      We love watering down our Chalk paint! But mineral paints, like Fusion, work a little different and there's conflicting information on whether you can water it down effectively or not, because it does have "self leveling" and top-coat properties to it.
      But Chalk paint is definitely nice to work with, for sure!

    I really like what you did here. Maybe I missed it, but did you finish the back side so it could be used as an island or are you using as counter space?

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Jeanie! Yes, we did paint the back.. It's just not usually a flattering angle to show and can get a little redundant, but we do paint the backs of all of our pieces, even dressers, because you never know where the piece will be used by someone in their house (obviously we knew on this one because it was for us). It certainly looks more professional regardless! 😊
