Can We Upcycle This Shop Cabinet Into a Mid-Century Modern Beauty?
If you don't mind, could you share with us how much you sell these beautiful pieces for?
It's been a few years since we've made and sold these, but trying to remember without pulling up old sales sheets, I want to say the larger versions was around mid $60's and the smaller version was around mid $50's. 🤔
Do u have the side rails? Could u use them in the front?
Im new to painting. Im surprised the draw doesn't stick on the inside where you painted. I dont like using spray paint. Can you suggest another primer? I did read that fusion has a primer in it so was curious as to why you used a primer
It often depends on how much the paint adds to the clearance between the drawer and surrounding. If there is very tight clearance, any added layers will make it tighter and will cause it to be tight or to stick. There's times where I would make sure to tape the inside off or sand afterward to keep the proper clearance, but it all depends on the piece. Priming, regardless of typ of paint, helps ensure adhesion and also helps prevent any bleeding. It's not usually as big of a problem with darker colors, but still good practice to make sure the finish lasts the test of time. As far as other primers, you could try Zinsser Bullseye. I've used it on a few pieces in the past, and also on other applications around our house throughout the years. It tends to go on a little thin though, so you may need a few coats. But if you're looking for a brush on primer, I would recommend trying that one. Best of luck in your projects!
@@BrickHouseVintageDIY thank you :)
Did you use red primer because it is opposite green?
Would it have made any difference if it was first stripped instead of sanded? I'm so new to this. I'm just trying to learn.
Beautiful!
Is mineral paint the same as chalk paint? It looks lovely.
Im new to painting so still learning but from what I read mineral paint gives a much smoother finish than chalk paint. I dont like how chalk paint goes on. I will be switching to mineral paint from now on. I do like the sound of fusion paints
Nice piece. Thanks for saving the original character of the wood.
Will it show through stain?
Beautiful
Beautiful ❤
It’s nice but personally disappointed. I prefer to see older not so common pieces restored instead of turned into something you could probably purchase new that is comparable.
מהמם😍😍😍😍😍אהבתי מאוד❤
It turned out really beautiful but those lines on the doors could it be penciled in with a small brush maybe in gold?
Good job..I'm fixing to start a bed bench for g daughter. Thank u
it is perfect, great job, awesome
Very cute!
I love the color, do not like the white knobs. The glass knobs would be better if they were in gold instead of silver.
No primer? Sorry if it’s a stupid question I’m new to this
It ultimately depends on the finish, whether or not primer should be used. On this piece, it was heavy distressed so the primer wasn't needed and the ultimate test is the type of finish used. You usually don't have bleeding problems with wax, at least that I've ever seen over the years we've been doing furniture. Where you tend to run into the most problems is with poly/clear coat finish. You always run the risk painting a lighter color over darker finish/wood, but the clear coat/poly is what can really draw the stains and tannins out from below. Sometimes months or a year or two after you finish it, but it can still happen. That being said, rule of thumb is if you *arent* going for a heavy distressed look like this, I would prime. Two, if you are using a light color (white, gray, yellow, etc) over dark wood, I would prime unless you go with a wax finish *and* heavy distress the piece. Three, if you are going to poly as a finish, expect it to bleed so you'll definitely want to prime as necessary. Best of luck with your projects! 😊
@@BrickHouseVintageDIY thanks a lot mate, I’m restoring a pine box from the 1920s and I’m very torn about the use of the primer. On one hand the wood has nice grain and knots so I’d like that to show through the paint, but on the other hand the wood is full of termites’ holes and previous and new touch ups that i don’t want to show. I don’t know what to do 😭 priming and painting would fix everything but the box would lose all its character. Woodworking is extremely philosophical and I wasn’t expecting that
Yeah, pine and other softwoods in particular tend to bleed a lot through the knots, even years or decades old sometimes they still give trouble. Might be OK with a piece that old, but I'd still be cautious. Personally, if it was me I'd probably clean it up and just seal it with a poly... Let the character and uniqueness show through while at the same time giving it new life and protection. Also depends on if you are going to keep it or sell it, and what the trends are by you. We haven't been painting furniture for quite awhile now for a few reasons, but one being the trends and what is "in". At the height of our business, painted furniture was in and sold like crazy by us. Things have changed since then and the original vintage/antiques are back in again, or pieces that are some variance of wood finish (refinish, bleached, unfinished, etc). So if selling, your market will drive what you "should do". If doing for yourself, I'd say do whatever you are going to love and just prep it accordingly. 👍🏼
@@BrickHouseVintageDIY thanks a lot for the answers 👍🏻
Great Job! Not sure if your wife is still unwell. God bless you and get well soon. Keep up the good work!
She is doing well, thank you!
I’ve done a piece similarly. I have a video on our channel of the similar piece. So much of what you guys do we do as well here in Alabama. We are The RAW Mercantile. aka Refined and Whimsy. I am a new follower. Great job on this piece. 👏🏻 I am a new fan!!
Very nice! I came here bc I am straddling the fence as to what to do with my grandparents old bedstead set. Prolly 100yo, walnut, cured dark in the summers in the attic, tiniest scratch to the finish leaves yellow mark. Feels hard and rough. If i dare sand it , it will turn to that yellow old powder. Scared. Want to do a bench but it will be sensitive.
It amazes me that people are still ruining victorian furniture at a time it is starting to go back up in value.
"Ruining" is very subjective. The family that bought it loves it for what it is - A beautiful entryway bench. They didn't need a bed, they wanted a beach. In fact, this video is almost 2 years old and with the trend of what was "in" by us, this bed as it was would have sat and we wouldn't have been able to sell it for $20. Auctions and sales would literally be giving them away. Instead, we chose to repurpose it into something usable and sellable while still maintaining some of its unique charm. At the time, that's exactly what we achieved. We made almost 50x more on it as a bench then we would have as a bed.
❤beautiful and classy 👌
Thanks for the idea
Super job
Glad you kept the history, it's beautiful! Would make a nice entry place to put shoes on etc could add hooks to hang coats , hat, etc...
Thank you for sharing so much information during your videos. I am sure for you it’s not even a thought to “number the drawers” or explaining “SFO”, & 😅why not to sand “too deep” ect but to me a true beginner, it’s invaluable information. I spend so much time searching for an answer (sometimes) that is probably so incredibly simple, however--- hours 😆! I just really appreciate your videos, all the info that’s tied into them and for your amazing talent. Be blessed and PLEASE CONTINUE TO SHARE! Thank you thank you thank you, gracias, GRACIAS, Gracias------ ------- gracias! Talent, talented, mucho talent!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Meh
Gorgeous piece, especially since you left it stained and opted not to paint it. Excellent choice! Thank you. I’m tackling this same project very soon. Great video!!!
EXCELLENT VIDEO... BEAUTIFUL Thank you for sharing this video
Love the bench. Glad that you did not paint it. Great job.
🎉Beautiful Bench! I love that you didn't paint it... so perfect! ❤
I like the b4, too much on the bricks
Best video I've found for german smear (and I've watched a LOT) I like how he goes back and exposes some bricks.
Beautiful but why not leave it as a bed instead of cutting up such a beautiful peice 😢 love the stain color ❤❤
I like the way you finished it. I struggle with painting these old pieces of furniture.
What's the difference between bondo and wood putty?
Elegant!
Nice job butt II hate the distressed look.
I believe that originally would have been a side table in a formal living room circa 1940, maybe in New Orleans, with a red velvet terribly uncomfortable sofa and two occasional chairs. With lace crochet doilies. Of course! It’s design is a visual delight! Wish I saw it before you got it ! 😂. I’m jealous ! (But you created a charming table!)
Paint ruins it. I'm just putting a glass top on my bottom, using top display elsewhere
I have a similar hutch. Also splitting it up. Very insightful
Beautiful! Love the wood look
Thanks, I hate it 😂
Wow that is soooo pretty!! Excellent makeover
That is gorgeous. I love antique bed pieces
Just ugly.who paints beautiful wood.
Beautiful ❤
Fantastic 😍
