$7.41 Extreme Auction Flip Makeover - This top was SO damaged |
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 гру 2023
- I won this buffet at auction for $7.41. I forgot I even bid on it until I got the notification that I won. Well, the joke was on me, because the top had major damage from melted candle wax.
I tried to re-veneer it, but I must not have used the correct glue or I didn’t apply the glue correctly because I had some pockets that didn’t adhere. I took it all off and decided to fill it in and paint over it.
That was not fun because it was difficult to get a completely smooth surface. I used several products, but the last one was my favorite and really smoothed everything out.
Wow, what a beast, but now it’s a beauty!
What do you think?

@@ivylaneinteriors thank you for your reply. My father had an "antique" store in the 80's, he refinished furniture too but preferred stains. He also enjoyed refinishing boats and motor-home interiors (wood and upholstery) .
What website did you use to sell it or did you put it in a store/antique booth/craft show ?
Hi there great job 👍the black rubber bloks you used when you sand in your hans what do the calls? I haved never ever seen them before and I just think that they are brilliant because I noticed you where meshing up whit the right highness to sand with the black Bloks 👍💪 thanks for watching and get me even more and more crazy crazy DIY ideas 😂😂😂🎉💡😅 hugs from little coooold Denmark
I’m
Your honesty on this piece, the struggle with the top, was appreciated. This work isn’t always easy. Love the fact you weren’t willing to sell it on an iffy quality glue adhesion. That’s integrity. 👍
Thank you! Yes, I felt strongly to make it right for the new buyer. 🙌🏼
Looks GREAT
Yeah. Honesty is a fast disappearing thing these days. We appreciate your good nature. No one wants to buy a lemon!
That's what I thought...an unvarnished view of the process is extremely valuable.
Beautiful
I use rubber cement to glue the veneer. In a well ventilated space, apply cement to both furniture surface and veneer back. Let both dry thoroughly. Space out long, thin dowel rods on surface. Align veneer on top. Working from the center, pull the middle rod out and smooth outward. Remove rods, one at a time, and smooth as you go. Once down, it will not come off! So make sure you are lined up!!! This method never fails me. You talked about the veneer lifting. I've never had that to happen with rubber cement.
Thank you for the detailed suggestion 🙌🏼😊
Your tenacity on this project is inspiring. It's very easy to give up, but to keep on going like you did, shows true character. Great job!!
Thank you so much! 😊 🙌🏼
Came out BEAUTIFUL
Very nice work! The next time that you work with veneer use Weldwood contact cement, and use dowels to place it onto the mating surface. When you were using the Titebond I was hoping that it would work. I really like how you adapted and made the necessary adjustments. Nice work!
Yes, that seems to be the consensus 🙌🏼 Thank you! 😊
Thanks for being humble and sharing your mistakes. That way we all learn. Great job. It turned out beautifully 😊
Oh gosh, it is humbling, but I hope it helps. 🫶
You need contact cement for the veneer. And for the bondo…use a 3” plastic spatula.. also on the veneer you need something to smooth out the bubbles. Been there, done it and it works great 👍🏻
Yes, contact cement seems to be the consensus. I have multiple Bondo spreaders. I just forgot to use them until later. 🤦♀️
Oh…good to know! Thank you! 👍🏼
Watched this at 11:00 pm at night to relax me before bed. Your voice and work is peaceful! I could never do this but I enjoy watching transformations!
Well, no one has ever said that. 😅 Glad to hear it’s relaxing though 😬🙌🏼
Me, too
I haven’t read through all the comments to see if anyone else offered any help, but the Flipping Drawers and Transcend channel furniture refinish artists are highly recommended from my point of view for learning how to do veneer work. They are amazing! You gave it a heck of a try and you are awesome for putting yourself out there so tip of the hat on showing your boo boo and how you overcame it. I subscribed for more. You were a pleasure to watch from my armchair!
Thank you! Yes, a few others mentioned them as well. Always something to learn ☺️ Welcome, glad you’re here 🙌🏼
Hi! Great job! One tip for doing veneer sheets. When you’re done ironing (you can iron directly on like a 4-5 setting so mid setting) take a wet cloth or sponge and wipe it down this will show you the spots that didn’t glue down all the way 🫶🏼 then iron those out! But great job! Super helpful to watch you do this!!
I was able to iron the spots down, but I was concerned about the long term. That is why I decided to take it off. It was just a fail all the way around 😩
They would have stayed down. The moisture didn’t cause the lifting, it just revealed where you don’t have a good bond.
came here to post this, its normal to not get all the glue set on the first go when doing it like this, you'll want to wipe it down with water and check for your lifted spots and iron those down, let it set, then do that a couple more times till you feel like you've got them all. worse case scenario they will show when you put on your final varnish/wax/etc and you'll have to iron it then re varnish the area
Cement glow much better
I would have covered the top with laun
No one gets through a new process without hiccups. Thanks for your transparency. Your pieces always look fab and I appreciate that you didn’t want to sell a flawed piece. Your resolution was spot on.
Thank you so much! 😊
You really slayed that beast. I enjoy watching your work but felt your pain. It turned out great.
@@robertheffernan1188 ha, yes!! 🤣Thank! 🙌🏼
I really enjoyed her work, as well
Match sticks work well to they are a little softer . It is looking good though . You should have used a wet cloth and iron it again .
Sometimes, what we have projected in our heads, the piece has a mind of its own. After all that preserveranc and hard work, it paid off. STUNNING!!
Very informative.
Oh gosh, isn’t that true! So many times these pieces have a mind of their own . 🫠 Thank you SO much. 🤩🙌🏼
After you were done it looked like a beautiful classic piece of furniture! Thanks so much for including the parts that you had to struggle through.❤❤❤
You’re welcome! This is more of a learn with me channel 🤣 Thanks so much! 🙌🏼
Holy Cow, what a transformation!! Really appreciate your sharing the ENTIRE process, especially the 'trials and errors'. I learned a great deal. Thank you.
Thank you! It’s not easy sharing failures but I hope it helps. 😩😊🫶
this was one of the best videos i've watched for furniture flip because of the fact that you did not hide your learning curve. that is so appreciated for those of us learning too! the other great part is the actual outcome of your hard work and adapting to the hiccups seriously so good
Aw, thank you! Such kind words. 🫶 I appreciate it.
I know, it’s really true. The veneer is a really common failure point. But to have that damaged particle board underneath? My heart sank for you. But I knew you’d overcome it, and I was so curious to see what you had done. Amazing.
Stunning ❤
Your trait of patience is admirable. The furniture piece turned out to be very beautiful.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Excellent work you did. I liked the piece when I first saw, all the details, and the sculpture is so beautiful, now I see it's beauty much much better
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I really appreciate you showing your "flop" -- I like to think we can all learn from each other in this community. So thank you! And the finished product is GORGEOUS! A+ work! 🏆
It’s hard to share the failures, but I hope it helps others! Thank you. 🫶
Absolutely beautiful. THANK YOU for sharing. I love watching these before and afters.
This piece turned out beautifully and video was very helpful! 😊
It looks amazing, We all learned from your mistake. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed it
So beautiful! The legs were perfect for the piece. I really love your perseverance and honesty. A joint knife or taping knife would definitely help with smoothing out filler on larger areas. And as a few others have said, contact cement may be the way to go in the future. The painted top looks as good as the stained wood veneer, though. Wonderful job.
Thanks so much! Yep, I need a better tool. I even have a Bondo spreader but didn’t use it until later 🤦♀️
Since there's obvious wax on this piece, clean that I would suggest the following: clean off all the wax you can with your scraper and vacuum whatever, cover the waxed areas with a couple of layers of paper towels then using a pretty warm, warm iron go over the wet, the paper towels and see how much wax they can pull out of the wood with the heat And the paper towels to absorb the wax. You might be very surprised at how much you can get out of the surface that way. I tried this once, and it pretty much took almost all the wax out of the surface very easily. I've also raises the nap on the surface of the wood, which takes out, minor gouges and scrapes.
Sadly, it had already ruined the veneer
I love how you show your trial and errors. It gives all of us the courage to do the same. I also like how you show how each product works….good and bad. You give us the courage to try!! Thank you for your candid videos. We are all restoration warriors.
Добрый день. На ваш канал попала случайно и это первое видео просмотрено мною. Работа просто класс. Пойду смотреть другие Ваши видео. Лайк и подписка. Привет из России!
My pleasure! 🙌🏼😊
I really have great respect for all the hard work you put into this project. I loved the finished product. With today's selection of colors in homes, the Grey's and whites, it will fit in modern to farm house to Victorian. Truly a prized piece of furniture. Could be put in many different locations of a home. Dining room, den, living room, in a large fouier with a mirror placed above it . A bountiful bouquet of flowers or a nice art piece in the center. Possibilities are endless. Would love to own this piece.
Thank you! 🫶 It was a very popular color 🤩
What a labor of love, so much hard work you put in but WOW, it’s gorgeous. Thank you for being humble enough to share even the ‘flops’ as it’s so helpful. Awesome flip and tutorial - huge thanks!!
Thank you! It’s definitely humbling to share the fails, but I hope it helps others. 🫶🤩
Hi from Cambridge UK. This is now quite, quite lovely. Well done for not giving up. You deserve a medal for persistence and for ensuring that the finished article is perfect
Thank you! Yes, my main concern was for the future owner. I didn’t want that veneer to lift on them down the road. I’ll figure it out on a future project…I hope! 😅
I really love watching these “flips” . Taking old unloved furniture and bringing it back to life is such a positive and artistic thing to do. I admire the work you do and the care you take. You deserve every cent you make 😊😊😊
Aw, thank you!!
Good job. Spent many years redoing furniture, just loved it. So satisfying.
It really is! 😊 Thank you!
Thank-you so much for being humble and sharing with us your mistakes. You are amazing!
It’s kinda hard, but I hope it’s helpful. Thank you! 🫶
I love to see all the outfit changes to see just how many days you worked on this! lovely result 😀
Ha! For real! It was a process. 🙃🫠
Beautiful!! I love to see a beautiful piece of furniture brought back to life!
Me too! Thank you! 😊
It is GORGEOUS! I could never have refinished it. It would have been perfect in my kitchen! I’ve been looking for extra counter space in my small kitchen. Something like this would work and give me more storage. Thank you for sharing! You did a wonderful job on it. God bless you!❤
Thank you! 😊
It turned out GORGEOUS! Such a petty you had so much trouble with the veneer application... I don't know the cost of the veneer you bought but it is probably more expensive than painting. And yes, you should use a large spatula to apply the bonds. The top was really challenging to becoming even but YOU NAILED IT! Thanks so much for sharing .
Yes, the veneer was a pricey mistake, but I’m keeping it to use for veneer repairs 🙌🏼 Thank you!
Thank you for saving this piece! I loved the vibe of this one, turned out fabulous. You are talented and so very patient. This was one of my favorites!!
Aw, thanks Rachel!
Nothing beats the make and sturdiness of old furniture. I love my rock maple bedroom set that my great grandmother gave me. I would pick older furniture over any of the new things being sold. There are few artisans that make old world furniture now. Your finished remake is beautiful! Have to confess though, I love the beautiful wood on the drawers.
I agree! I love vintage furniture. The quality is hard to beat!
Your hard work paid off
I agree the added feet gave it a whole new look. I admire your dedication to doing a really good job. I'm glad you did well on the sale.
I agree! The feet really helped! Thanks so much. 🙌🏼
I'm usually not a fan of painted furniture, but this looks spectacular. It's not just the wonderful job you did with the surfaces, but the addition of the legs really puts the shine on that apple. I'd buy that piece in a heartbeat!
The legs really helped this piece. Thank you! 🤩
I had a similar problem painting my kitchen cabinets. The wood had split on some of the cabinet doors because of the sun. To say I used a ton of wood filler and wood putty is an understatement. But in the long run three years later my kitchen cabinets still look fantastic. That piece turned out beautifully. You did an outstanding job! Good for you, love that color.
Thanks so much! 🤩
Bless your heart. I would have fallen over on top of the piece and cried! You are amazing.
It was tempting 🫠 Thank you! 😊
Wow! It came out beautiful! I’m in awe! The before and after pics were truly amazing! Great job! Your tenacity in doing it right was commendable; as your first priority was to your buyer. Kudos for that! I’m sure whoever bought it will enjoy many years and pass it on to the next generation! Thank you for sharing your gift restoring vintage furniture in a contemporary style!
Thank you so much for the kind comment! Yes, the new buyer was my main concern when it came to the veneer. It worked out in the end. Thanks again! 🤩🙌🏼
OMG, I love the way this piece turned out. You did an amazing job...❤
Thank you so much! 😊
AMAZING!!! OMG! And I loved that you shared the flip side of this refurb!! You persevered!!!
Thank you so much!! It’s humbling to share the fails, but I hope it helps someone else. 🙌🏼🤩
Thank you for showing us the flops along with the flip, it is great to see the whole process and learn with you. It is beautiful! Wonderful job!
Thank you so much! It’s not easy sharing the flops, but I do hope it helps. 😊
Wow $700 that person was blessed!
You did fantastic work! I enjoyed learning from you!
Thanks for watching! 🤩🙌🏼
I just have to tell you that, your a tremendously talented lady! I love how you made this a teachable moment, and the two things I think is a must is clean under the furniture base, and no over spray you took care of both! Bravo love it
Aw, thank you! 🫶
Two things. I love Bondo spreaders. They work great. Second was did you weigh down the veneer like with weights books etc? I would have maybe tried to flip it upside down to dry? Awesome end result tho!
Yes, I have multiple Bondo spreaders, but I didn’t use them until later. 🥴 The ironing was supposed to take the place of weighing it down. 🤷♀️ I read later not to use yellow wood glue, but that was what they recommended. Lessons learned 🙌🏼
Your perseverance and drive produced an absolutely beautiful result! Congratulations!
Thank you so much! 😊
Well done! I love that these are long form videos and that you share what doesn’t work as well as what works.
Thank you! It’s hard to share the fails, but I hope it can be helpful too. 😊
Great job, I’m in awe of your determination to keep at it till it’s done, you are a machine! 🤗
Aw, thank you. 🫶
I really appreciate you showing us how things go wrong. I was watching carefully as i have veneer to replace on top of a cabinet. Not as large but still the same process. Will skip the wood glue and use a proper veneer adhesive
You’re welcome. Hard to share, but we learn so much in the failures too. 😊🙌🏼
So pretty and lots of hard work and patience but so worth it ! It’s actually gorgeous
Aw, thank you! 🤩
Really enjoyed this video especially your honesty how sometimes things don't go as planned. You were able to undo your hard work (the top) and re-create a plan to make it work, good for you. You're very talented and patient. The piece turned out beautiful.
Looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it 🤩🙌🏼
Tons of respect for showing your veneer flop. I’ve never done veneer, but Jon Peters has a great video on doing large veneers (on a cabinet he built).
It’s not easy showing failures. I have a lot to learn but I will get it one of these days. 🙌🏼
New here and WOW, this turned out stunning!! Thank you for showing us your mishaps, for those of us just starting out. ❤😊
Thank you! 🫶
WOW!!! Amazing patience and dedication to finish this beautiful piece.
Thank you very much! 😊
I am in awe of what your process is! Loving all your steps, and obviously, your knowledge you have gained with each project! Thank you for taking the time to share!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching 🙌🏼🤩
Looks great! I've got to get a paint sprayer, that's a game changer!
Paint sprayers are a big help in getting a factory like finish. 🤩
I'm new to your channel. Considering all the work you put into it, the finished product came out amazing, beautiful and you didn't give up.
Thank you so much, Maria! 🫶🤩
Wow! This was a true labor of love! All of your hard work turned out beautifully and I learned a lot! Thank you so much for sharing❤❤❤
You are so welcome! Thank you! 😊
Absolutely beautiful!! Thanking for sharing how you made decisions along the way, learning as you went. Great video
Thank you so much! 😊
You know the project is done accurately when the quilting rulers come out 😂😂. This turned out beautifully!
Ha, you know it! 🤣 Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Way to persevere! I would have tucked it away after the first scrape of wax and probably not have pulled it out again for a year. Hah! You did an amazing job!
Ha! It was tempting, but it’s so big I needed to finish it so I could get it out of my garage! 🤣 Thank you!
thanks for showing your flops! I soooo needed that. I watch the other videos that show how perfect each application they do the first time and it looks wonderful. I was not having that success and started to give up. But your flops inspired me to keep going. thank you.
You are so welcome! It’s not easy to share the mistakes, but I hope it’s helpful 😊
You are the absolute best!! You are honest and that is so helpful. I watch others but they don't elaborate on the process and I still can't get the gold leaf to work as easily as everyone else seems to but I also know it can't be that easy so I just keep plugging along. You definitely know what your work is worth but you are humble enough to probably be around if anything else on the piece goes wrong. Thank you for having a great attitude and being willing to let everyone know it's not always smooth sailing n
Thanks Olivia! I try to share the fails too because this is more of a learn with me channel. 😬🙌🏼
What a job!! I bet you were pulling your hair out over that top 😖 It turned out very nice and elegant so it paid off 🤗
Oh gos, yes! So frustrating 😩
Love the great new look, and the info. on the products that worked for you. I’m just learning, and I need to know everything about refurbishing furniture. Thanks so much:)
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much! 🙌🏼😊
It looks gorgeous...but, boy, the work you put into it 😮 I'm super-impressed!!
Beautifully done. Love the quality of your patience. I have a small house, so something this large would take up too much room. Blessed are those who have the space to place this beautiful drawer piece in thier house.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
OMG the work you put into that. I like how you had the learning experiences and you were willing to admit the experiences you went through. They weren't mistakes. Just experiences. Great job! The patience you had with that job was unbelievable. Beautiful!
Aw, thank you! I try to share both sides of the flip. It’s not easy, but it’s reality 🫣
Wow, I love your dedication and persistence, it was well worth the effort! Beautiful piece
Thank you very much! 🤩
Your perseverance is awesome, my husband and I joke the 3rd time is a charm. We have done SO many projects over before we were happy with them. That is a sign of a professional artist who seeks to do it right, and give the client their best, not do it fast just to make as much money as quickly as possible. I. The end your finished product is beautiful! I have been doing this for many years and it never gets old either doing a project or watching someone else do one and learning along the way.
Thanks Johnette! I do try to make it as perfect as possible. 🫶
Loved watching this. You are skilled! You have a lot of product knowledge as well. I am thrilled you restored such a beautiful piece of real furniture!! Congrats.
Thank you so much! 🫶🤩
Yes I enjoyed this video. You worked hard but had a lot of tutorials to help beginners. Thanks for all your hard work to restore and make that piece so beautiful. We learn and we grow as we go.
So true. Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
You did a wonderful job.I really like what you did to get it to look and be so beautiful..I don't have the patients for something like that,so i'm glad there are people like you around to do it and save all these pieces from the landfill.Congratulations on a job well done..
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
National voice talent. Consider voice over on any project, but the voice talent is foundational to further productions. Congratulations on discovering a component to your teaching ability. Solid.
🤩🙌🏼
This is my first time watching one of your videos. I'm so glad I did. Ypu did an awesome job. Talk about dedication! You could have scrapped it & everyone would understand. I'm glad you didn’t. I appreciate your honesty & candor! Can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! 🤩🙌🏼 It was tempting to scrap it 😬
That piece is gorgeous! I like how you included the oops I and others can learn so much!
Thank you! It’s hard to share the fails, but I hope others can learn from my mistakes 😊🙌🏼
Thank you for the detailing. It's really helpful to see the entire process. And so many refinishers don't go to the level you do, like taking off the doors. It makes a difference. What I really want to know is how the heck do you keep your nails so beautiful! OMG. I also really like the painted top instead of the wood.
You’re welcome! Thanks for the feedback. 🙌🏼 Ha! I don’t know. They just grow like crazy. 🤣
Wow beautiful work ! U have unbelievable talent & patience! Thanks for sharing & not giving up
Ah, thanks! 😊
Such patience and vision! BEAUTIFUL job!
Thank you so much! 😊
I really liked this video.. and I'm impressed with your final look. How to trouble shoot. The different routes you took helped me to understand how to keep trying.
It was a challenge, for sure! 🥴😬☺️
Worth all the effort. Also thanks for being so honest and sharing your “flop” with us👍🏻
Aw, thank you 😊🙌🏼
Yes I appreciate your willingness to be honest about your mistakes ...we all get to learn from them thanks a million
I appreciate that. Thank you! 😊
This was an AMAZING flip, and yes, the listing price was a bargain, especially with all the hours and materials put in to update it. The final outcome was lovely, and it was done in a way where it will remain a timeless piece for many years to come.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
It's Gorgeous !! ❤ I see what you had to go through but my goodness, my hats off to you !! You sure made that look Amazing !! I love it.
Thank you so much!! 🤩
I just found your channel, so this is the first video of yours I've watched. You did an amazing job on that piece of furniture. Wow! I loved that you showed us what worked and what didn't. Thank you so much,
Aw, thanks! And thanks for watching 😊🙌🏼
You put a tremendous amount of work into this piece! Well done..it’s beautiful ❤
Aw, thank you! 😊 🙌🏼
Awesome job! Determination is key and experience, of course . I loved watching your video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it 🫶🤩
That turned out beautiful! For all the work you put into it, I'm very impressed!!❤
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Wow! I think it turned out beautifully. I love the color, especially with the gold pulls. I like the vinyl you used to line the drawers, and I think the feet helped it feel less heavy. I was exhausted by the end, just watching you go through the process. I have also flipped refinished and flipped furniture, but I've never taken on such a big project as this. You stuck it out and it looks great. Nice job.🎉
Ha, I was exhausted too! 😬😅🥴🫠
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Way to go girl. You learned soooo much from this flip and you stuck with it!!!
Indeed, I did! Thank you!
I feel your pain. I’m on re-do # 2 on my table top. Wisdom: learning from the mistakes of others. This video Was sooo needed. Thanks for sharing
Glad it was helpful! Thanks! 😊
I think this piece looks better now than it ever did when it was new! I was so frustrated for you as I watched you doing this project- I have had similar frustrations and do overs- so maddening but when it’s all done it was so worth it!
The feet on this do really dress it up so much more than the original base!
Ha, I was frustrated too! 🤣 I was pleased with final result though. Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I really enjoyed watching and I learned a lot from your project. Thank you and I’m looking forward to your next project 😊
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I'm no wuss but your courage at tackling that veneer is commendable. RESPECT.
I tend to be a bit overconfident 🫠🙃
Wow your patience is awesome! Gorgeous ❤
Patience or stubbornness 🤔🫣🤣 Thank you! 😊
I just love the finished look. You did such a great job! I find this inspiring!
Many thanks 😊 🙌🏼
gorgeous piece of furniture. Great job of restoration. Congrats.
Thanks so much! 🙌🏼🤩
You did a beautiful job on this piece! You’ve inspired me to work on a Drexel dresser I bought used many years ago. Thank you for your knowledge and expertise.
Awesome! You’re welcome and good luck on your project! 🙌🏼😊
I felt your pain when you had to temove the veneer. I think i would have cried! You handled that remarkably well!
Its a beautiful solid piece. Should last a lifetime.
It was definitely a low point 😩 I’m pleased with the final product. Thanks so much. 🙌🏼
Great job…I love how you did not give up👏👏👏
Aw, thanks! 😊
GREAT JOB! You gave me some new ideas! I’m glad you saw the potential in this piece. Looks FANTASTIC!
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I like how the accordion detail "popped" when painted!
me too!
