  • In this video, I go cross eyed, looking at all the various performance settings and visual FX settings in AMS2, in an effort to get the best performance balance, for jitter free racing, and hopefully, some great looking graphics using the 4070Super and the Quest 3. And as always, all this from, an older gamers perspective.
    If you are confused by how to setup AMS2 for the best possible graphics to performance, when using the Quest 3, this is the video for you.

    First of all, thank you very much for your videos from another older gamer. They are highly appreciated and helped me a lot.
    After switching from console to PC lately, I just received my Quest 3 a couple of days ago (using a AMD 7900XT).
    I am using the link cable for the connection.
    I’m still fiddling around with all the settings and my first test title is Dirt Rally 2.0
    I might have missed it, may I ask what are you resolution scale settings (% and pixel) in the Meta link app and Steam VR?
    My next try will be AMS 2! Thank you very much in advance!

      Hello fellow Older Gamer :) Glad to hear you are making the switch to PC AND VR. That's going to make a dramatic difference to your immersion in the sim.
      I have the slider set all the way over to the right in the meta app, so for me that 1.5x, but it might say something different for you. Best to start off at 72hz, with the slide in the middle, then if you are not seeing frame drops, you can push it to the right a bit at time and retest.
      Don't forget you can also alter the Oculus Debug tool. There is another video in my library on how to adjust this for better visual clarity. Also check out the Discord video I made, it has a link to the Older gamer discord channel where you will find a knowledgeable group of people who can offer any help you might need.
      AMS2 is a bit more demanding than some sims, but you should be good with the system you have.
      best of luck.

    Let's see, I have a RTX3060 and a rift s and I see a lot of correlation in the tests I have been able to do and the ones you mention.
    For me the two points of attack are the msaa and the shadows, and the shadows are so bad that it is better to eliminate them.
    Personally I have to say that I was disappointed with the graphics of this game because everyone claims that it is the most optimized game for VR but AC can be seen better and there I do an ss of 1.8 without a problem, however I have to say that I like AMS2 a lot.
    In short, good video and thanks for your time.

      I also found some issues with AMS2 and shadows, but I wasn't sure if that was just my system as I haven't seen anyone else mention it. I basically had flickering of shadows, which is very off putting and distracting. The graphics of AMS2 can be difficult to optimise, but they do have a certain realism that I liked. But as you say, this does come at the cost of performance issues.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  2 місяці тому

      With the Quest 2 I used wifi with a 5 connection, but when I moved on to the Quest 3, I went with the link cable as it seemed to offer more options, such as increasing the Bit rate encode to 450, which for me, on my 5 router just wasn't possible.
      I think the Link cable is the best solution, but for some people this isn't possible because of where their rig is in relation to their computer. If that case, I would suggest wifi 6, albeit I have not tried it and I am basing my opinion on reviews that I have seen.
      So, cable is the best option, but if you can't do that, go with wifi 6, but research carefully the router you would buy to make this happen.

    I’ve been using a PICO neo link 3 (display port over usb-c) as well as my quest pro (did have a quest 3 but sent it back as it wasn’t as big a step up from the quest pro) and I’ve found bumping up the resolution scaling and switching msaa off and using smaa ultra gave a decent bump in performance whilst not looking as bad, if you can I’d try getting openxr toolkit going too as the fixed foveated rendering helps out a lot. Just built a friend a sim racing rig and they’ve only got a budget for 10600k and a 3080 but with the same setting as you they can get a solid 72fps at 72hz and if they set the max visible cars to 15 they can get 90fps at 90hz on their quest 3. Cracking video by the way 👍

      Hi, thank you for commenting.
      I have been using OpenXR with iRacing, and it works fabulously there, but I couldn't get it to work with AMS2. I did some research and found that steam required me to use OpenComposite (I think it's called), but the compatibility sheet listed AMS2 as not working with the Oculus branded headsets, so I didn't try it out.
      I know that OpenXR was not accessible inside AMS2 when I tried it.
      72Hz is the best solution to frame rate drops on lower powered systems, but I know a few people who are not keen on that refresh rate.
      I've tried them all, and I can't see much difference between them, but it is a subjective experience.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  7 днів тому +1

      If you are having performance issues, 72Hz is my go-to solution for helping to ease those issues. I personally don't see much difference between 72 and 90, but I know a lot of people prefer 90 so that's why I slanted the video towards that refresh rate. The trade off is slightly less smoothness during fast paced areas of the race, but if you can live with it, it is worth doing.

  • @Jnibbs24

    So what would you want the right side of the performance bar to read? I must be reading it backwards

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  4 місяці тому +1

      The performance bar shows the accumulation of GPU and CPU headroom, basically what's left over in your system before it gets to the point where it's going to drop frames.
      When the bar is at the top, wiggling along in green, then you have maximum amount of performance available to your games. As it drops towards the bottom, it turns yellow, and that indicates that performance is still okay, but not optimal. When it gets to the bottom, it goes red, indicating that soon you could start to see dropped frames, or ASW will kick in (even if you have disable it in ODT).
      When the red line is no longer visible, it means you are deep into negative performance territory, and dropped frames and/or ASW is invertible.
      With AMS 2, it starts low, in the yellow (on my system) even with most settings on low or off. With iRacing, with most settings off or low, I am in the green.
      My next video will look at a way to solve this problem in AMS2 so that I can use higher settings or race in bad weather, without such a drastic performance drop. Should be released by the end of this week.
      I hope this helps.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  4 місяці тому

      I would say that if you are happy with the graphics you are seeing, as they are, you should probably leave it as it is, kiss your computer goodnight every night, and tell it never to change.
      However, if you want to experiment a little, then you can drag that slider to the right, if you go to the max that will be maximum or native resolution in the quest 3.
      It's up to you. If you change it, and you see no real difference, graphically, but a big drop off in performance, then put it back.

      AMS2 is a demanding sim, especially in VR. Take a look at this video - ua-cam.com/video/aVIZTyNFXEI/v-deo.htmlsi=eaN6aTs_OzQt9z0s
      Here I found some more power for my GPU with some simple optimisations. This is though for iRacing, so not everything will apply to AMS2.

    something is off here I hope ams2 is running in Oculus mod. I'm on downclocked 4070ti which should be like 5% above 4070super. running msaa high, filtering 16x, reflections, track, env on mid, cars and shadows on high. posteffects and most effects are on. doing 80 fps with 20% headroom. I'm using vrperfkit for the foveated rendering set to 0.4 for the inner radius and 1.0 for the mid and outer radiuses. msaa breaks foveated rendering so you can't use lower values for those 2 rings, 1.0 effectively turns them off. you also you need msaa on high to use it at all.

    13:06 all those cores set to rest! So silly modern games still only single threaded.

      Yes, it is an issue that CPU cores are not always fully utilised. I am told by those more knowledgeable than me on the subject, that 'stuff' is going on with the other cores, but even so, it would be nice to see sim race developers doing some work on this issue.
      Probably the issue is the older engines they are using do not support this, as the argument that they want to remain backwards compatible with older PC's that don't support multicore must now be a redundant argument.
      Either way, there does seem to be some advantage from using certain powerful CPU's. The AMD CPU's with the 3D cache seems to be currently a good bet for performance, and I have my eye on an AMD spec'd system that I hope to build later this year in order to test this theory out.

    Congratulations, you win the prize for the most worthless, most unhelpful and misleading video on youtube, 2024 edition.
    For anyone watching this, please do not follow this guy's advice. It is all wrong!
    It is amazing that someone that owns the baddest, fastest GPU out there is denying himself a good VR experience by sabotaging the settings to an extent that makes zero sense. Clearly someone that doesn't understand the settings and is fixated on some performance graph shouldn't be giving advice. But hey, anything for youtube fame, right?
    Why is this guy so off? For one he didn't mention the most critical of all the settings in order to get good graphics in AMS2: super sampling. The fact that he doesn't tap into this setting tells me that he doesn't know it exists. Even on a Quest 3 not utilizing SS renders the graphics crude. Then again the hit of performance that this setting causes would likely give him a heart attack, so perhaps this is why it was omitted?
    I have Quests twos (yes, plural) and a 3 and I have done extensive testing on the best possible VR experience and no, I do not rely on a graph when my eyes will do. I get a great gaming experience using a lowly GTX1070, a far cry from his fancy 4070 Super. And guess what: I have every setting on max, other than things like godsray, boom and other lighting effects. Yes, everything on max. And this is the key ingredient, and the one that would put this guy 6 feet under: I also have super sampling at 1.6x (out of a maximum of 2). Anyone with a RTX30 something should be able to run it at 2x for a clear, crisp experience. Works great without a graph telling otherwise, so feel free to try.
    I'm no preacher and certainly wouldn't want to play one on Easter (happy Easter, everyone) not here to preach, just pointing out how bad this video is. I'm only here to let you know that you are free to follow this guy's instructions on how to botch a perfectly fine game. Then try my settings suggestion and see for yourself. And please, don't bother with the fancy graph thing, it's totally useless. Your eyes should be the judge.
    AMS2 offers the best VR experience of any sim. Please don't deny yourself that pleasure by following this guy's advice.

      No need to talk about me in the third person, I am right here, if you want to ask me something, just do so, although I would request that you keep it civil, insult free and without reference to my health. Thank you.
      I would disagree with you about wanting UA-cam fame. I am far to old to even be worried about such things, and I create videos for my own amusement, and in the hope that it helps some people. The feedback I have received seems to suggest other people have found my videos helpful.
      Super happy that you get such great gaming experience from the 1070, a legend in the gaming world. Enjoy the experience.
      I do plan to create a video on super sampling in the near future, and look forward to your comments on it.
      AMS2 is a great VR experience, it is one of my favourite offline sim racers, not so much the multiplayer, but it is good at what it does, and it offers a choice of cars that most other sims struggle to match. I love using it, I really do, and I would heartly recommend it to anyone. It is a great VR experience, has a true VR menu system to select the race (with iRacing does not), and some of the best visuals around.
      But, it does not offer the best performance, it's playable, but it can be demanding on most PC's. I am not suggesting people should not buy it, quite the opposite, they should, but they should be aware that in VR, it can be challenging to get sharp, good looking graphics in AMS2 (and most other Sim racing software).
      So on your last opinion, AMS2 in VR is great, we are in agreement, some of you other opinions, not so much. But that's the wonderful thing about opinions, everyone can have one and we can still be friends even if we don't agree on everything.
      We are both sim racers. Let's enjoy that commonality and agree that AMS2 is a great sim racer, and long may it be so.
