I've been rewatching LOST, and this scene actually made me laugh...with Ben and Desmond doing that almost precision tandem 'drop' right behind Mib/Locke when Kate takes that first shot. This was a great scene all the way around with Jack going toe to toe with Locke about what's going to happen next.
Right here, Jack deduced that Jacob brought Desmond, the one guy in the whole world resistant to the effect of the electromagnetism of the Island, for a reason. He deduced that if Desmond is a failsafe, it means that Desmond is planned on being used to go down into the source and alter something that will change the game. Jack also reasoned that Jacob not telling them about it was Jacob holding his cards close to the vest. Jack's an excellent poker player; he beat con man Sawyer for the medicines (and no nicknames). Jack knew Jacob wouldn't bring Desmond to do the one thing that Smokey wanted, unless it would have an unfavorable impact on Smokey.
Mib depended on Jacob leaving his people in the dark and not "stepping in". Now Jack explains Jacob actually met them and gave them information. His fear was really of Jacob having some ultimate plan to stop mib from leaving.
That "Old Serpent" is obviously not the real John Locke. If by "Old" you mean 2,000+ years old, you're right. I can't tell you how much I hated this guy.
Up until then Smokey felt like he always had the upper hand being indestructible and unstoppable as he is. When Jack says "That's a surprise," it's the first time doubt waves across Smokey's face.
This scene and the scene when Jack stop operating Ben (season 3 i think), are in my opinion Jack's best ones.. Normally is Locke and Ben that stole the show but in these particular scenes Jack is the character that control the audience.. The line "It's a surprise" is just awesome!
its amazing how terry o'quinn has managed to change character and play them both perfectly. You would think when you see him on screen as the man in black you would still see locke, but when i see him in scenes like this, all i see is the man in black and not locke. He does so well at portraying 2 very different characters in the same TV series
I think one of the coolest things about this scene is how it makes use of the rich characterization in Lost. All of the characters in this scene are so well developed that no one needs lines to convey the danger in Jack's plan. Even the exchange between Jack and the Man in Black is pretty minimalistic. This scene works so well because of the 120 episodes that preceded it where these characters were developed. This scene gets to be so over the top because it's grounded in actions these lived in characters would really take. Consider that a doctor walks up to an immortal thousands of year old smoke monster that appears as his rival turned posthumous mentor and threatens him with enough charm that the monster agrees go with him. That takes some setup.

I love the fact that basically when Jacob makes Jack the protector of The Island, Jack understands the rules that are in play and knows exactly what he has to do to make sure Flocke dies. But Flocke doesn't understand because he doesn't has the power of the Island other than knowing that Jacob made it so he couldn't kill the Candidates.
Jack said he didn't feel any different when he became protector. I think those abilities take a long time to discover. Jack told sawyer he was mostly guessing based on what seemed to make sense. Neither Jack or mib knew what would happen and they both agreed the would just have to see who's right. And then they both ended up being wrong
Terry O’Quinn definitely relished playing this evil arch enemy. The embodiment of all the sin and villainy of that island, and the monster we’ve all obsessed about for years. And compounding the fact that Terry had to play a very deeply saddened and lonely man for years and now - without blemishing that original character - he gets to craft a whole new character. He brings a Thanos level of charm and elegance that is equal parts stoic and intimidating. But always of sinister class. A pity he didn’t win for this part but he at least brought one home from season 4.
Unfortunately for Terry Breaking Bad was a hit and Aaron Paul was killing it during lost season 6. they both deserved a supporting actor Emmy that year.
He was annoying till season 4 ending when he finally let go, thats what makes him the best character in the show. The show had a lot of awesome characters but Jack was the best, he went full circle during the show and it didnt happen suddenly, it was painfully slow, he felt his old self die for his new self to come alive. Jack suffered more than most in Lost and thats what made the character, IMO, the best TV character ever.
Mike Inglese John Locke suffered the most actually he had a sad life his dad was a horrible person and his mother was mentally ill and plus John was premature and his farther stole his kidney and was bullied when he was a kid and his dad pushed him out of a building which made him disabled had no caring family was raised in a foster home and a lot of people treated John Locke like less human than any other character John Locke has the most tragic life out of all the characters and at least jack listened to John after a bit of season five I’m glad he did cause that would of made John Locke’s day if he listened to him but he did in the end I like jack in a bit of season 5 and all of season 6 good character in the end in season 4 3 2 1 I hated jacks character but in a bit of season 5 and all of season 6 I like his character
From the moment I saw this scene when I originally saw the episode, I saw FEAR in Flocke's eyes when Jack said "I'm gonna kill you". I've never seen this interpretation of this scene. To me, it's clear as day!
Season 6 was so cool, I mean yeah it had it's flaws, like not explaining certain things in enough depth, but it contained so many bad ass moments like this one. Also, Man in Black/Smokey/Flocke turned out to be one of my favorite Lost characters, he was hardcore.

No he knows that removing the cork will take away the islands powers. Even Jacob knew that, because he had the cork designed specifically to stop the flow of water when the cork was removed. The cork wasn't special, it was just a weight for a pressure plate mechanism. The main reason for the structures around the heart of the island was to keep people from being sucked in and turned into smoke monsters. But he could have done that without a cork design. And Jacob had to of tested it during its construction, knowing that removing water from the heart of the island would disable the islands powers. MIB likely lost his abilities during these tests too, but didn't realize it because it was probably a matter of minutes, so he just wouldn't know that he suddenly lost his immortality and ability to be a smoke monster during these tests. Basically, Jacob knew for thousands of years how to kill MIB, he just didn't want to have to, he was always hoping he could change MIB's mind.

Jack knows that he must trust his instincts, because Jacob wouldn't have chose him otherwise. This is why Jack attacks MIB outside of the cave. He knows that's the only choice he has available to him, so that must be the right course of action, and then he realizes MIB is no longer immortal and can be killed, which is what Jack was supposed to do at the right time.
Jack could be such ass at times - impulsive controlling obstinate. But he always tried to do the right thing, no matter what - or in this scenes case, who - got in his way.

To make the scene a lot better they should of added bullet holes in FLocke. Kate shoots him atleast 5 times yet there ain't no bullet holes. No holes nothing. But still this wa a powerful scene

And yes, she managed to shoot him, which was always a bit of an unfair killing, as his back was turned. Jack's the one who had him distracted though.

Well, like Ben said in season 4 after killing Keamy: Sometimes, good command decisions get compromised by bad emotional responses. Kate didn't care for her own safety in lashing out at him, and to me that screams "courageous" and to you it screams "stupid". Look at how terrified Sawyer looked when Kate stopped shooting: that wasn't non-stupidity holding him back. It was fear.
