The fact they didn’t spoon feed answers is what makes the show so great. 12 years after it ended and people still debate its meaning, plot points, cannon etc. they managed to con ABC into a castaway concept and turned it into high concept with a high budget. These days lost would be made easily by one of the streaming services like Netflix as they need ‘event content’, but in 2004 there was nothing like lost on tv.
@Chris Whitnall i agree I can imagine the ghosts of jacob and mib angrily playing their childhood game together when everyone else has..gone from the island And Mother was probably a smoke monster too who travelled to egypt then rome then to the island but i could be stretching about the travel part And the adult actors here talk literally like they were still the kids but grown older..both kids were cast perfectly
While recently rewatching this series and episode, after Jacob’s (Mark Pellegrino) line “nice talking to you too” and MIB (Titus Welliver) walking away, I half expected the camera to pan back and show a disgusted Matthew Abaddon (Lance Reddick) next to Jacob, who would say “…fucking Bosch.” Then cue the Bosch theme, of course.
The part, most people didn't even thought of, is that Jacob was real manipulator and ruined thousands of lifes, by bringing them to the island, just to prove MiB was wrong and to keep him there.
People live and die every day on or off the Island. Around the world we live in grace, bliss and prosperity and we also die in poverty, addiction, disease and loneliness. The Island brought many people more than they could ever hope to feel or achieve outside of it, and terrible things for others. It is no different than the chance of fate in a mundane existence anywhere else they wound up. Not to mention this slight tipping of the cosmic scale for a few castaways is nothing compared to the unmitigated disaster that would be MiB getting off the island.
He was a manipulator and a person to only prove a point that MIB was wrong about man’s nature. Truth be told MIB was actually telling the truth in this scene

I do agree some type of adversity might be necessary from time to time. But for sure there can be progress without those things being a factor. There is no progress in destruction and corruption only regression. Overcoming them and other adversities can lead to great progress too. But it is not the adversity itself that causes the progress. What about it? Egyptians found the island and realized it had strong reproductive powers so they built a statue of the tawret the Egyptian god of fertility.
In one of the videos on the Lost Explained channel, he discusses how Egyptians were likely among the first to find the island. One clue being that the "exit" for the island is in Tunisia seems to indicate that the island was at one point, or maybe even originated, in the Mediterranean.
